At this panel, innovators from both academia and industry will present their entrepreneurial ideas and compete for a significant cash prize that can seed further prototype development. These devices typically operate using energy harvested from their environment e.g., RF, solar, vibration, etc. When energy is intermittently available, IPDs can perform computation, use peripheral devices (e.g., sensors), and communicate (e.g., via backscatter). These devices currently operate at approximately 10 microJ/Byte energy consumption, enabling today's devices to support simple, short-lived, primarily isolated applications. With improvements in computer architectures, hardware and software systems, the communications stack, emerging memory technologies, and energy harvesting and transfer, we envision devices that operate in the sub-nJ/Byte range, supporting long-running, sophisticated, sensor-rich, widely-communicating applications. This workshop exists to bring together researchers at the intersection of programming languages, software systems, extreme low-power computer architecture, and embedded communication and computing devices.
