Conf. on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN) February 18-19, 2017 in Uppsala, Sweden http://www.ewsn2017.org/ Following the success of last year's edition, the International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN 2017) will host also this year a dependability competition to compare the performance of WSN and IoT communication protocols in environments rich of radio interference. The competition rules and evaluation scenario will resemble the ones of last year's edition (for further information please visit http://www.iti.tugraz.at/EWSN2016/cms/index.php?id=8 <http://www.iti.tugraz.at/EWSN2016/cms/index.php?id=8>). Contestants must first submit an abstract describing their approach in detail by the contest registration deadline. The authors of the selected abstracts will be invited to participate in a two-days dedicated competition session and asked to deploy their software on Zolertia Z1 nodes deployed in an environment with controlled radio interference. Solutions will be evaluated based on the reliability of transmissions, the end-to-end latency, and the energy-efficiency. A complete description of this year's evaluation scenario will be published on September 15, 2016. CATEGORIES AND PRIZE: Depending on the nature and number of submissions, multiple categories may be defined and cash awards will be given to the winners in each category. Accepted abstract will appear in the ACM digital library (upon approval of the authors) and the top-classified contestants in each category will also be invited to present their approach in a dedicated session at the conference. ELIGIBILITY: Both academia and industry submissions are encouraged. All communication protocols used in low-power wireless sensor networks are welcome, and there is no restriction on the operating system used to program the sensor nodes. Manufacturers plan to introduce new cars into the market with V2V and V2I communication systems as soon as 2019 (estimated). Large-scale testbeds are running or planned in different parts of the world, such as the Cooperative ITS Corridor that connects Austria, Germany and Netherlands, and the USDOT plan to install V2V technology in 10,000 city-owned vehicles in New York City. On the other hand, the technology will continue to evolve. In parallel to the deployment phase, multiple discussions are taking place at different levels and in different forums about the next generation of vehicular networks. The 3GPPP has launched a Work Item to study the feasibility of LTE-based V2X services and connected vehicles are being considered a relevant part of the future 5G ecosystem. The automated (and connected) vehicle will soon come into play and may significantly change the roots of vehicular networks. The 2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC) seeks to bring together researchers, professionals, and practitioners to present and discuss recent developments and challenges in vehicular networking technologies, and their applications. In addition to the standard full and short paper tracks, IEEE VNC 2016 will continue the tradition from previous editions to include a poster and demo session to allow the authors to closely interact with and obtain feedback from the conference audience on new or ongoing research contributions related to vehicular communications and networking. Posters are especially suited for presenting controversial research directions that may generate discussion, or promising ideas not yet fully validated through complete extensive evaluation. IEEE VNC 2016 will also include a demonstration session for researchers to showcase their latest prototypes with media, models, or live demonstrations. The demo session will be co-located with the poster session to ensure maximum visibility and a close interaction with the conference audience. We solicit proposals for demonstrations from industry and academia related to vehicular networking. Submissions should showcase innovative systems and prototypes developed for either commercial use or for research purposes. We especially encourage demos on validating important research issues or showcasing prototypes that demonstrate realistic applications. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * 5G technologies for connected vehicles * Communications and networking for automated and semi-automated vehicles * Congestion and awareness control in vehicular networks * Novel technologies for V2X (TVWS, LTE-D, VLC, etc.) * Safety and non-safety applications of vehicular networks, including ITS * V2V, V2I and V2X communications and networking protocols * Vehicular communications with VRUs (Vulnerable Road Users) e.g., with bicyclists, pedestrians, etc. * In-vehicle communications (wireless or wired) * Radio propagation and technologies for vehicular networks (propagation models, antennas, etc.) * Protocols for vehicular networking (radio resource management, link layer, routing, mobility management, dissemination, transport etc.) * Security, privacy, liability, and dependability in vehicular networks * Network and QoS management for vehicular networks * Simulation and performance evaluation techniques for vehicular networks * Results from experimental systems, testbeds, and pilot studies * Impact assessments of vehicular networks on safety, transportation efficiency, and the environment * Communications related to electric and hybrid vehicles * Heterogeneous networking approaches (multi-radio, multi-channel, multi-application, multi-technology) * Integration of V2V with on-board systems and networks * Vehicular networking architectures and system design * Applications and services to enhance driver experience, performance, and behavior All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings and will be submitted to the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. Manuscript submissions All paper submissions must be written in English and must be formatted in standard IEEE 2-column format. The mandatory IEEE template in Microsoft Word and LaTeX format can be found at the IEEE templates page. Only Adobe PDF files will be accepted for the review process. All submissions must be made electronically through EDAS. We will consider two different categories of papers: * Full papers should describe novel research contributions and are limited in length to eight (8) printed pages (10-point font) including figures, tables, and references. Papers exceeding 8 pages will not be accepted at EDAS, nor reviewed at all. * Short papers should be more visionary in nature and may report on work in progress without finished results. They are meant to present novel perspectives, so as to foster discussion about innovative directions and new points of view. They are limited to at most four (4) pages including figures, tables, and references, but might in many cases be even shorter. Accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings and there will be given (a shorter) time for oral presentation at the conference. Please note that the full paper and short paper categories target different kinds of contributions. Papers submitted to a category will NOT be moved to a different category: a paper will either be accepted for the category where it has been submitted, or it will be rejected. Full papers will not be “downgraded” to short papers. Therefore, please be sure to carefully assess for yourself prior to submission which is the most suitable submission category for your paper, and to make sure that the presentation in the manuscript is well suited to the aims of this category. From the perspective of power sector, V2G networks necessitate a careful management of the energy flow for charging/discharging a tremendous number of EVs, with the objectives of guaranteeing grid stability, improving energy utilization, and reaping potential arbitrage value. Meanwhile, as indispensable bridges for managing the EVs connected to the power grid and the associated energy flows in V2G networks, designs of efficient communication networks for facilitating V2G/V2V communications are indispensable. Such designs not only cover a wide range of important directions such as network infrastructures, cross layer communication protocols, signaling systems, quality of service! , and resource managements, but also need the integration of the emerging ICT technologies such as M2M (or D2D) communications, IoT networks, software defined networks. Moreover, driven by the growing security issues in cyber spaces, securing the operations and communications of V2G networks and protecting the privacy of EV owners will be of practical and timely importance. This special issue aims to provide a platform for sharing the recent research and development on V2G networks. The challenge of interacting with automated (and connected) vehicles is also creating opportunities for the further development of mobile and wearable technologies. IEEE VNC 2016 is seeking to encourage innovation in vehicular networking and communication systems by organizing its first ever mobile app contest, to be run in conjunction with the main conference. The contest aims at novel mobile applications associated with autonomous vehicles, transport vehicles, passenger cars, and even two-wheeled vehicles. This is a platform-neutral contest. The paper must provide the name of the App and detailed description (i.e., the goal, features, functionality, applied techniques, and/or future enhancement), innovation and/or uniqueness in the market, as well as a list of similar or related apps in the market when applicable. The paper must also provide the name and contact information of the author(s). * Supplementary materials (Please pack the code and video into a ZIP file and upload the ZIP file as supplementary materials through the VNC online submission system.) * Code * Android Apps: You must upload an .apk file. * iOS Apps: You must upload a test build. * Others: For other platforms, please upload the executable binary or source codes in a single compressed file. * Video * Less than 5 minutes in length. * Footage must include a comprehensive demonstration clearly outlining the features and functionality of the App. * Finalists will be announced on November 10, 2016. All finalists must attend VNC '16 and provide a 15-minute demonstration of the App to be considered for the final awards. * The following requirements must be followed in the development of all Apps: * Language Requirements * All submission materials must be in English. * App Requirements * Functionality: The App must be ready to install and operate on the platform for which it is intended. The App must function as depicted in the video. * Platforms: Submitted Apps must be implemented on at least one of Android or iOS mobile devices, including phones, tablets, and/or watches, which are suitable for demonstration. All necessary servers or sensors must also be available, as developers will be expected to demonstrate the entire App system if selected as a finalist. * Originality: The App must be newly created by the developer. Apps that have been previously published or posted on Google Play or Apple Store (or any similar app distribution sites) are ineligible. The App may not be submitted simultaneously to another contest. * Copyright issues: All materials used in the app, including drawings, images, sounds, and computer code, must be original. It is the responsibility of the individual making the submission to secure necessary permissions and/or licenses for the use of any auxiliary materials that include the work of third-party individuals or organizations (including copyrighted music or movie excerpts). Evaluation Criteria * Creativity and Innovation: Inventive new ideas for the transportation sector; creativity and design that makes an impact. * Potential Value: Potential to assist individuals, organizations, or communities to make informed decisions. * Technical Depth: Technical expertise in wireless communication, data analytics, machine learning, visualization, etc. * Completeness: Authors should not overstate the capability of their apps. Such devices do not only act as sensors, but also provide computing, networking, and storage resources. Fog computing (sometimes referred to as edge computing) provides a conceptual approach for virtualizing and orchestrating these resources to process data. Fog computing makes it possible to move from centralized cloud-based data processing to a decentralized processing network that includes networked edge devices, allows for cloud offloading and multicloud deployment, and leverages federated clouds. A number of conceptual approaches to provide such solutions have already been proposed. Despite these existing theoretical foundations, practical adoption of fog computing is still at its very beginning. Consequently, this Special Issue of IEEE Cloud Computing seeks to address these needs. Examples include minimally-invasive embedded and bio-compatible devices, deep-brain stimulation, "smart skin", and artificial retinas. In addition, the medical device industry is undergoing a rapid transformation, embracing the potential of embedded software and network connectivity. Yet, despite the tremendous promise, the medical devices are still burdened by complex design, safety assurance, and tendency to operate independently. Medical Cyber-Physical Systems are safety-critical, interconnected, intelligent systems of medical devices. The combination of embedded software controlling the devices, networking capabilities, unique sensing and actuation technologies, and complicated physical dynamics exhibited by patient bodies highlights some of the specific research challenges for this distinct class of cyber-physical systems. As such systems become increasingly complex, interconnected, and interoperating, the major challenge is how to assure and improve the safety, security, efficiency and reliability of medical cyber-physical systems. *Scope, Description, and More Information* This special issue seeks papers describing significant research contributions in the domain of medical cyber-physical systems; each paper should show enough evidence of contributions to medical cyber-physical systems applications and systems in practice.
