Call for Competitors
3rd Dependability Competition at the
Intl. Conf. on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN)
February 14-16, 2018 - Madrid, Spain
https://ewsn2018.networks.imdea.org/call-for-competitors.html
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Following the success of the 2016 and 2017 editions, the Intl.
Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN) will host
also this year a competition to compare the performance of WSN and IoT
communication protocols in harsh RF environments.
FORMAT:
This year's dependability competition will have a new format compared to
the past two editions, the most prominent changes being that it will
take place remotely over a longer time window, and that it will involve
the reporting of multiple events from several nodes.
Interested participants should first submit an abstract describing their
approach by the competition entry deadline. Accepted contestants will
obtain the credentials to remotely access the competition infrastructure
and enter the preparation phase, after which each team needs to provide
one binary that will be used for the final evaluation.
A poster session entirely dedicated to the dependability competition
will take place during the evening of the first conference day. All
competing teams must present their solution in the poster session and
will have the possibility to engage in lively discussions with the other
conference attendees. The winners of the competition will be awarded
during a dedicated plenary session on the second conference day and will
hold a 10-minutes talk preseting their solution, followed by a short
discussion.
COMPETITION SCENARIO AND EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
The competition scenario emulates the operation of a sensor and actuator
network monitoring discrete events in an industrial setting where
several co-existing wireless devices are crowding the RF spectrum. A
complete description of the competition scenario and evaluation
procedure can be found at:
https://ewsn2018.networks.imdea.org/call-for-competitors.html
ELIGIBILITY
Both academia and industry submissions are encouraged. All wireless
communication protocols used in low-power wireless sensor networks are
welcome, and there is no restriction on the operating system used to
program the sensor nodes.
The competition will take place if at least 5 teams respond to this
preliminary call for competitors. Depending on the nature and number of
submissions, multiple categories may be defined. The winning teams in
each category will receive cash awards and present their approach at
EWSN in a 10-minutes plenary talk.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Interested participants should first submit a two-page abstract
describing their approach by the competition entry deadline, following
the formatting requirements described on the competition Webpage. The
abstracts will be used to pre-select the participants to the
competition. Accepted contestants will have the chance to edit their
abstract and submit a camera-ready version by the end of the
competition's preparation phase. Accepted abstracts will appear in the
ACM Digital Library, unless authors explicitly mark their submission as
confidential.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Competition entry deadline (Abtract submission): Oct. 11, 2017

Call for Papers – RED-IoT 2018
“2nd Workshop on Recent advances in secure management of data and
resources in the IoT”
In-conjunction with EWSN 2018
Proceedings appear in ACM Digital Library
February 14-16, 2018 in Madrid, Spain

<https://ewsn2018.networks.imdea.org/red-iot.html>
Keynote speech: Dr. Shahid Raza, director of the security lab at SICS,
Sweden.
Recent advances in the area of Internet-Connected Objects have
revolutionized the everyday lives of people and the industrial world.
The Internet of Things (IoT) has infused immense doses of "intelligence"
in the physical world making the transition towards digitising
everything. Nowadays, most devices around us are either connected to the
IoT or are about to be. Physical objects are becoming intelligent
through connected devices that are either attached to them or
monitoring/controlling them. At a larger scale, cities are becoming
smarter, embracing a plethora of technologies to enhance and improve the
quality of everyday living.
The evolution of traditional wireless sensor networks towards the IoT
has introduced numerous opportunities for advanced and promising
applications for citizens and industries. Many companies have recently
launched "smart products" into the market, in every domain: home,
automotive, agriculture, water, air, environment, etc. Most of these
products are quite innovative and can be useful for improving and
simplifying the lives of citizens, assisting them to their daily
activities or contributing also to improving the municipal services and
improving the quality of the environment we live.
However, most of these products fail to address even simple challenges
for security and privacy: they do not protect the data they gather and
transmit, they do not use encrypted connections, they use simplistic
credentials, etc. The IoT, though, raises significant challenges
regarding security, and privacy. Having large numbers of connected
devices deployed everywhere around us, e.g. in homes, offices, buses, on
the street, monitoring the everyday activities of citizens raises issues
regarding user privacy. Privacy issues exist not only when users are
actively involved in IoT applications e.g. when sending data from their
mobile phones, but also when they are subjects of monitoring by other
devices, e.g. when they are being monitored by cameras on the streets.
Devices that offer actuation capabilities, e.g. traffic lights, doors,
windows, alarms and vehicles allow cyber-attacks to extend effects to
the real world. Current centralized IoT solutions raise also security
and privacy issues due to the single central point of gathering all data
and mechanisms. To address this, lately, there is a shift of interest
towards distributed or decentralized security solutions.
This workshop builds on the success of the first RED-IoT workshop
collocated with the IEEE CAMAD 2014 conference in Athens, Greece,
December 2014. It aims to bring together experts from academia and
industry that are working in cross-layer issues in the areas of
security, and privacy in the IoT. The goal is to present recent results
of the research community, the industry and standardisation bodies and
exchange ideas for joint research activities in the future. The workshop
welcomes original submissions in the following topic areas:
• Security and privacy by design architectures for IoT
• Decentralized and distributed security architectures
• Blockchain in the IoT
• GDPR in the IoT
• Intelligent, secure data processing, mining, fusion, storage, and
management, context awareness, ambient intelligence • Secure wireless
channel and traffic models
• Physical layer security in the IoT
• Secure spectrum management solutions for wireless IoT
communications • Security of sensors and actuators
• Security and privacy in IoT applications • Embedded security and
privacy in IoT devices • Forensics for IoT
• Privacy and anonymization techniques in IoT
• Trust management IoT architectures
• Lightweight security solutions • On-device authentication,
authorization and access control in IoT
• Big data security for IoT

IEEE PerCrowd 2018 – 1st International Workshop on Context-Awareness for
Multi-Device Pervasive and Mobile Computing

SCOPE AND OVERVIEW
__________________
-
Pervasive and mobile systems are constrained by energy and performance
issues when they operate in isolation. Yet, several studies have shown
that smart devices are frequently co-located in proximity to at least
one other device throughout the day, suggesting that devices can
potentially collaborate to reduce the effort of resource intensive
tasks, e.g., sensing, offloading, networking, storage, etc. However,
merging the resources of multiple devices to work together is a tough
challenge as it requires a common understanding of the context of each
device. In addition, since smart devices function in multiple roles,
understanding what really constitutes context becomes difficult as
different types of contexts need to be modeled depending on the type of
task. -
Context information is critical in multi device setups, e.g., for the
formation of collaboration groups, and for negotiating responsibilities
between the devices. Any misunderstandings in context can thus be
extremely counterproductive for the collaboration between devices.
Consider, for example, a computational task, e.g., game puzzle, whose
execution can be accelerated by dividing computations between two or
more devices. To distribute the task, we first need to understand the
processing capacity of each device to ensure devices with insufficient
resources are not harnessed for this task as they would turn into
bottleneck for execution. By detecting the context for harnessing
collaborative and opportunistic resources in proximity, it is possible
to reduce the cost of executing tasks in the constrained resources of
smart devices, and to diffuse the presence of smart devices beyond their
existing computing isolated behavior.
- The goal of PerCrowd 2018 is to explore the impact of context in
collaborative and opportunistic computing. More in detail, the goal of
this workshop is to explore the use and effect of contexts on
multi-device settings, whose computational behavior can be propagated
within a community of devices for optimizing their energy and performance.
-
Original papers addressing theoretical, practical, and technical aspects
of opportunistic and collaborative self-organization of devices are
solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of
such applications and systems are particularly welcome. The submission
of informative surveys of the state of the art as well as position
papers on controversial issues is also encouraged. -
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Context-aware collaborative systems and applications
- Resource extension of pervasive and mobile applications
- Opportunistic context modeling - Pervasive computing applications
harnessing multiple devices
- Data-driven techniques for community formation
- Self-organizing community construction and evolution
- Crowdsensing and crowdsourcing models for data acquisition and fusion
- Applications of crowdsensed models, e.g., incentive models, decision
making models, and privacy models.
- Infrastructure, architectures, and platforms for collaborative systems
- Lessons and experiences of evaluating multi device context-aware
systems and applications
- Emerging applications for multi device environments.

As digital computing and communication become faster, cheaper and
less power consuming, these capabilities areincreasingly embedded in
many objects and structures in the physical environment.
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are co-engineered interacting networks

Call for Papers
The 19th Annual International Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and
Applications (ACM HotMobile 2018)
Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE
13-14 February, 2018
Tempe, Arizona, USA
ACM HotMobile 2018, the Nineteenth International Workshop on Mobile
Computing Systems and Applications continues the series of highly
selective, interactive workshops focused on mobile applications, systems,
and environments, as well as their underlying state-of-the-art
technologies. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for
presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches.
We solicit submissions of papers that (1) focus primarily on applications
and systems and (2) propose new directions of research, advocate
non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy
and discussion. We especially encourage papers that identify fundamental
open questions, advocate a new approach, offer a constructive critique of
the state-of-the-art, debunk existing assumptions, report unexpected early
results, report on promising but unproven ideas, or propose new evaluation
methods. Novel ideas need not be supported by full evaluations;
well-reasoned arguments or preliminary evaluations suffice. The program
committee will explicitly favor early work and papers likely to stimulate
reflection and discussion over a "6-page conference paper".
We take a broad view of Mobile Systems research. This includes:
Novel applications, environments, and devices supporting mobility
Operating system and distributed system support for mobile computing
Wearable computing, internet of things, sensing, and context-awareness
HCI issues related to mobile computing
Security and privacy of mobile computing
Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility
Wireless technology, as it pertains to mobile systems and applications.
The deadline for submissions is October 12, 2017, 11:59pm EST. Acceptance
notification will go out on December 15, 2017.
Presenting at HotMobile is a good way to get early feedback on research
ideas at least one year away from a full-fledged conference submission to
ACM MobiSys or other high-quality conferences. A full-length paper on the
same topic submitted to a conference in less than a year is unlikely to
include sufficient new material and more mature ideas.
As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not
be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Papers accompanied by
nondisclosure agreement forms are not acceptable and will be returned to
the author(s) unread. As customary with the scientific peer review process,
submissions will be handled as confidential material during the review.
Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format,
including all references, figures and tables. The submissions should not be
anonymous. Papers should use the standard ACM template, available at:
http://www.acm.org/ For more submission guidelines, please visit the
conference website.
The papers accepted to HotMobile 2018 will be publicly available from the
workshop's website for a limited time window, as per ACM's Digital
Library's Policy.
If you have any questions, please contact the PC chair at
arunab(a)cs.stonybrook.edu.

CALL FOR PAPERS: IEEE Internet of Things Journal Special Issue on
Wireless Energy Harvesting for Internet of Things
The ubiquitous sensor-rich mobile devices (e.g., smartphones, wearable
devices, and smart vehicles) have been playing a vital role in the
evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT), which bridges the gap between
digital and physical spaces. The powerful computing/communication
capacities, huge population, and inherent mobility make mobile device
networks a much more flexible and cost-effective IoT solution than
traditional wireless sensor networks. However, the energy issue of mobile
terminals poses significant challenges to the widespread use of IoT: not
only the mobile terminals have short lifetime with the proliferation of
mobile applications, but also the current networking and communication
technologies are not adequately taking the energy efficiency into account.
Therefore, the sustainable issue of IoT has attracted considerable
attention from both academia and industry. Wireless energy harvesting and
transfer technology was recently proposed as an effective mean to address
this issue. It enables the mobile terminals to harvest energy from the
ambient environment to prolong its battery. Although some forms of energy
harvesting have been applied to WSNs, networking and communication
solutions must be redesigned for wireless powered IoT with massive number
of mobile terminals.
This special issue (SI) will bring together leading researchers and
developers from both industry and academia to discuss and present their
views on all the aspects of wireless energy harvesting in the IoT system.
In light of the increasing interest of these topics, this SI will focus on,
but will not be limited to, the following subjects of interest:
l Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in IoT,
l Secure IoT with wireless energy harvesting,
l Relay-based wireless energy harvesting IoT systems,
l MAC protocols for wireless energy harvesting and transfer in IoT,
l Economics of wireless energy and data transmission,
l Energy Efficient transmissions and network architecture,
l Scheduling and optimization of both users for energy transfer and of
data packets,
l Hardware design and prototyping for SWIPT applications in IoT,
l Interference aided wireless energy harvesting,
l Waveform design and optimization for wireless power transfer,
l Optimal Control for wireless energy transfer and harvesting,
l Wireless power enabled machine-to-machine (M2M) and device-to-device
(D2D) communications,
l Optimal wireless power transfer enabled IoT transceiver architectures
