Call for Papers
2nd Workshop on Benchmarking Cyber-Physical Systems
and Internet of Things (CPS-IoTBench - co-located with CPS-IoTWeeK)
April 15, 2019 - Montreal, Canada
https://cps-iotbench2019.ethz.ch/
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
AIMS AND SCOPE
Over the last decade, research on cyber-physical systems (CPS) and
Internet of Things (IoT) has led to smart systems at different scales
and environments, from smart homes to smart cities and smart factories.
Significant progress has been made through contributions in areas as
diverse as control, embedded and real-time systems, wireless
communication, and networking. Despite these advances, it is difficult
to measure and compare the utility of these results due to a lack of
standard evaluation criteria and methodologies. This problem concerns
the evaluation against the state of the art in an individual area, the
comparability of different integrated designs that span multiple areas
(e.g., control and networking), and the applicability of tested
scenarios to the present and future real-world CPS and IoT applications
and deployments. This state of affairs is alarming as it may
significantly hinder further progress in CPS and IoT research.
The 2nd Workshop on Benchmarking Cyber-Physical Systems and Internet of
Things (CPS-IoTBench) brings together researchers from the different
sub-communities to engage in a lively debate on all facets of rigorously
evaluating and comparing CPS and IoT solutions. CPS-IoTBench provides a
venue for learning about each other’s challenges and evaluation
methodologies and for debating future research agendas to jointly define
the performance metrics and benchmarking scenarios that matter from an
overall system’s perspective.
We invite researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to
submit short papers. We particularly encourage submissions that focus on
one of the following:
- identify fundamental challenges and open questions in rigorous
benchmarking and evaluation of CPS and IoT solutions;
- offer a constructive critique on the current practice and state of
experimental comparison;
- report on success stories or failures with using standard evaluation
criteria;
- describe efforts to replicate or reproduce experimental results from
published research;
- present example benchmark systems and approaches from any of the
relevant communities (embedded systems, real-time systems, networking,
wireless communication and control, etc.);
- benchmark industrial standardized solutions against each other and
against academic solutions, and discuss their strengths and weakness for
different application use-cases and industry verticals;
- propose new research directions, methodologies, or tools to increase
the level of reproducibility and comparability of evaluation results.
Well-reasoned arguments or preliminary evaluations are sufficient to
support a paper’s claims.
Accepted papers will be published as part of the CPS-IoT Week
proceedings. Authors of accepted papers are expected to present their
work at the workshop.
SUBMISSION AND FORMATTING
Submitted papers must contain between 4 and 6 single-spaced U.S. letter
pages, including all figures, tables, and references. All submissions
must be written in English.
Authors should indicate their names and affiliations on the first page
of the paper. All submissions must be in PDF format and render without

2019 NDSS Symposium Workshop
Decentralized IoT Systems and Security (DISS 2019)
Call for Papers
https://www.ndss-symposium.org/ndss2019/cfp-diss-2019/
The success of the Internet of Things (IoT) depends heavily on the
extent of achieved interoperability, as well as on addressing the many
security and privacy challenges. Due to the multitude of types of
devices, systems, and protocols, and their scale of deployment and
limited resources, some of these systems will be extremely challenging
to interconnect and secure. The underlying edge network or
edge-computing infrastructure, supporting the IoT, will also need to
provide security and privacy guarantees.
Given that IoT devices and edge networks are deployed by a multitude of
players, decentralization has become a key enabling design goal of the
system. For example, recent advances in Distributed Ledger Technology
(DLT) and Blockchains can be incorporated to support decentralized
security. In turn, decentralized security through distributed trust can
help overcome privacy concerns and scalability bottlenecks, both of
which are becoming increasingly serious in large-scale deployments, such
as smart cities or Industry 4.0.
A decentralized approach to IoT interconnection brings forth many
opportunities, but also important challenges, e.g., in state
synchronization, trust management, and the difficulties of operating
with constrained devices and networking modes.
Following the spirit of the NDSS Symposium, the goal of this workshop is
to bring together researchers and practitioners to analyze and discuss
the huge potential, but also the inevitable limitations of decentralized
operation and security in the IoT space, in edge-computing, as well as
in the wider mobile computing environment.
The workshop will accept early-stage, novel ideas that are likely to
trigger discussion.
The proposed topics include the following:
+ Enabling secure interoperability across IoT ecosystems, including
- Applying blockchains and Distributed Ledger Technology to IoT and
edge network infrastructure
- Security and availability in multi-tiered IoT edge networks
- Peer-to-Peer (P2P) security and privacy in IoT
- Decentralized trust and rights management, including access control
- Decentralized authentication and access management at the IoT edge
+ Other topics related to decentralized security in IoT, such as
- Security and privacy trade-offs related to IoT scalability and
decentralization
- Cryptocurrencies, crypto-assets and cryptoeconomics in IoT and
edge-computing
- Secure Service provisioning and migration in edge-computing environments
- Sensor and Actuator Key Management and other Security Protocols
- Smart Contracts for IoT, including formal verification of smart contracts
- Application of concepts from outside of the IoT to decentralized IoT
security
- Usable security for decentralized IoT and edge-computing
Submission Instructions
===================
The workshop will accept papers between three to six pages in length,
for publication in post-workshop proceedings. Proceedings will be
published by the Internet Society with the revised papers based on the
workshop discussions and reviewer comments.
Papers shall be submitted for review in print-ready form using the NDSS
paper template and the review will be single blind. For a paper to be
published, at least one of the authors must attend the entire workshop,
the paper must be revised based on the discussion at the workshop, and

INTRODUCTION
-----------------------
As an emerged promising networking model, the Internet-of-Things (IoT) is a novel paradigm to interconnect a multitude of heterogeneous physical objects and devices. The IoT significantly provides an umbrella for a series of critical building technologies including wireless sensor networks (WSNs), fifth generation (5G) networks, and RFID. The philosophy of the IoT is to develop an intelligent, dynamic, large-scale, and coherent network framework for a wide range of applications and industries. Due to its potential advantages and merits such as high reliability, good scalability and intelligent capacity, the IoT has attracted great attentions and interests from both academia and industry.
The 2019 IEEE International Conference on Internet of Things (iThings 2019) will provide a high-profile, leading-edge forum for researchers, engineers, and practitioners from both academic and industrial communities to present state-of-the-art advances and innovations in theories, systems, infrastructure, tools, testbeds, technologies and applications for the IoT, as well as to identify emerging research topics and define the future of everything interconnect via cyberspace.

1. Call for Papers
Cloud computing has been widely adopted to enable convenient access to a
shared pool of computing resources. Nevertheless, as the distance between
the cloud and the edge device is usually large, cloud computing services
may not provide guarantees to low latency applications, and transmitting a
large amount of data (e.g., in big data analytics) from the device to the
cloud may not be feasible or economical. To address these issues, edge
(fog) computing has been proposed to deploy computing resources closer to
end users. Edge computing allows edge devices to perform computation
offloading to offload their computational tasks to the edge server, which
executes the computational tasks on behalf of the edge devices. Another new
technology called information-centric networking (ICN) has been extensively
studied in recent years. In-network caching is used in ICN to reduce the
duplicate content transmission in networks. ICN-based caching has been
recognized as one of the promising techniques for future wireless/wired
networks.
Recently, there is a phenomenal burst of research activities in integrating
edge computing, caching, and offloading in next generation networks. From
the perspective of applications (e.g., video), network, cache and compute
are underlying resources enabling these applications. How to manage,
control and optimize these resources can have significant impacts on the
performance of applications.
The Workshop on "Integrating Edge Computing, Caching, and Offloading in
Next Generation Networks" provides a forum that brings together industry
and academia, engineers and researchers to discuss up-to-date developments

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over the last two decades, the recent and fast advances in inexpensive
sensor technology and wireless communications has made the design and
development of large-scale wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and
cyber-physical systems (CPS) cost-effective and appealing to a wide
range of mission-critical situations, including civilian, natural,
industrial, and military applications, such as health and
environmental monitoring, seism monitoring, industrial process
automation, and battlefields surveillance. Some of these
mission-critical applications include the utilization of ground
sensor, robot and UAV networks, which are the confluence point where
the traditional fields of wireless communications, robotics and
control theory meet. Autonomous cooperative systems, made of
intelligent devices (such as robots and UAVs), may deploy, repair and
relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network
partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to
shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to
reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are
limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, the 5G architecture
foresees explicitly the usage of these specialized systems and offer
new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their
particularities and potentials.
Starting from the tradition of MiSeNet and WiSARN workshops, IEEE
MiSARN 2018 will aim to provide a forum for participants from academia
and industry to discuss topics in mission-oriented WSNs,
cyber-physical systems and UAV/Robot networking, combining both
research and practice. IEEE MiSARN 2018 will serve as incubator for
scientific communities that share a particular research agenda in the
area of the workshops topics. IEEE MiSARN 2018 will provide its
participants with opportunities to understand the major technical and
application challenges of mission-oriented WSNs, cyber-physical
systems and UAV/Robot networking as well as exchange and discuss
scientific and engineering ideas related to their architecture,
protocol, algorithm, and application design, in particular at a stage
before they have matured to warrant conference/journal publications.
IEEE MiSARN 2018 will seek papers that present novel theoretical and
practical ideas as well as work in-progress, which will lead to the
development of solid foundations for the design, analysis, and
implementation of energy-efficient, reliable, and secure
mission-oriented WSN applications and cyber-physical systems.
