In the last few years, we have witnessed a significant growth in the use of distributed sensor systems in a number of application areas, ranging from smart transport, energy and buildings, to factory automation, smart healthcare and environmental monitoring. In order for smart sensor systems to truly become useful and pervasive, we need to address a number of research challenges, including the tight integration of sensing and machine intelligence, reliable and efficient networking, interoperability and scalability, the need for dependable autonomy, interaction with humans, and important aspects of security, privacy and trust. DCOSS focuses on distributed information processing issues arising in networked sensor systems, covering aspects of high level abstractions, models and languages, novel algorithms and applications, system design approaches and architectures, as well as tools for simulated and real deployments. Potential authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that demonstrate recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research. All papers for IEEE SECON 2019 must be submitted via the conference submission page. Each submission must be no longer than 9 pages and in font size no smaller than 10 points. Submissions that violate the formatting guidelines will be rejected without review. All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality and relevance through *double-blind* reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. As an author, you are required to preserve the anonymity of your submission, while at the same time allowing the reader to fully grasp the context of related past work, including your own. Common sense and careful writing will go a long way towards preserving anonymity. Papers that do not conform to our double-blind submission policies will be rejected without review. To be published in the IEEE SECON 2019 conference proceedings and to be eligible for publication in IEEE Xplore, one author of each accepted paper is required to register for the conference at the full (member or non-member) rate. The paper must be presented by an author of that paper at the conference, unless the TPC co-chairs grant permission for a substitute presenter arranged in advance. The designated presenter should be qualified to both present the paper and answer questions. Non-refundable registration fees must be paid prior to uploading the final IEEE formatted, publication-ready version of the paper. At the same time, the edge of the Internet is increasingly empowered with new capabilities, like pervasive sensing and computing power, which opens the way to new domains, services and business models beyond the traditional mobile Internet, such as connected cars, participatory and urban sensing, industrial IoT. As a consequence, new types of information have to be delivered by the network with varying requirements in terms of reliability, transmission rates and latency. To cope with the exponential growth of devices and mobile data traffic, there is a need for clean-slate or evolutionary Internet architectures merging and assembling different network technologies, supporting new paradigms for wired/wireless system planning and optimization, efficient transport over heterogeneous wireless access options, efficient and quality-aware content distribution, and new approaches for unified operations and management of the heterogeneous components, like software-defined systems and network function virtualization. These are only some examples of the challenges that are of interest to IFIP WWIC 2019. The IFIP WWIC 2019 conference takes a broader view to the merge of wired and wireless technologies and welcomes submissions from academia and industry that explore challenges and advances in architectures, algorithms, protocols, and technologies for a global wired/wireless Internet network. Papers that present original work, validated by experimentation, simulation, or analysis, are solicited. We also encourage work-in-progress and position papers that describe highly original ideas, present new directions, or have the potential to generate insightful provocative discussions. IFIP WWIC is a single-track conference which has reached, over the last 15 years, a high-quality level, which is reflected by the paper acceptance rate as well as the level of attendance. In the past decade, the research community have produced proven solutions to build low-power mesh networks. Traditionally, the focus has been on short-range radio communication (e.g., ZigBee, Bluetooth, ZWave). An appealing alternative that have gained momentum in the IoT landscape is to equip the nodes with long-range radio modules. As a result, long-range radio communication technologies (e.g., SigFox, LoRa, and 802.15.4g) are considered as candidate technologies for many low-power wide area network (LPWAN) applications, especially those that require extended coverage such as citywide sensing, environmental monitoring, or remote infrastructure monitoring. The 1st Workshop on Emerging Technologies and Trends in Engineering Low-Power Networks (NewNets) brings together researchers and practitioners working in the field of IoT from both academia and industry, to discuss and explore short- and long-range solutions, the tradeoffs between these two paradigms, as well as how they can be used in synergy. In order to push the state of the art, several points need to be addressed: new features for the long-range technologies (i.e., over-the-air updates, roaming), radio resource management, regulations and policies on spectrum usage and sharing, business case analysis that are more well suited for certain vertical markets. We invite researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to submit papers. We particularly encourage submissions that focus on one of the following: - protocol design; - hardware platform design; - modelling and analysis of low-power short or/and long-range communication; - reliability, adaptability, and dependability of short and long-range communication solutions; - new features for the long-range technologies (i.e., over-the-air updates, roaming); - radio resource management; - deployment experiences, case studies, and lessons learned; - evaluation and testbeds; - regulations and policies on spectrum usage and sharing; - business case analysis that are more well suited for certain vertical markets. SUBMISSION AND FORMATTING Submitted papers must contain between 4 and 6 single spaced U.S. letter pages, including all figures, tables, and references. All submissions must be written in English. Submissions should be formatted using the standard IEEE template for Microsoft Word or LaTeX. Authors should indicate their names and affiliations on the first page of the paper. All submissions must be in PDF format and render without error using standard viewers (e.g., Acrobat Reader). Submitted papers must differ significantly in content from previously published papers and must not be currently under review for any other publication. SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS Poster and demonstration abstracts should be at most 2 single-spaced US Letter (8.5” x 11”) pages, including all figures, tables, and references. The review process is single blind, so there is no need to anonymize the submissions. All submissions must use the ACM proceedings template (LaTeX is preferred). Demonstration abstracts should list any special requirements (tables, power, wireless connectivity, etc.) in the submission on a separate third page. This third page is not part of the technical content of the abstract, can be formatted at the discretion of the authors, and will not be included in the camera-ready version of your abstract. The title of the abstract should be prepended with "Poster Abstract:" or "Demo Abstract:". Please make sure to include the name, affiliation, and contact information of all authors.
