*Instructions for paper submission*
-------------------------------------------------
All paper submissions must be written in English and must be formatted in
standard IEEE 2-column format. The mandatory IEEE template in Microsoft
Word and LaTeX format can be found at the IEEE templates page. Only Adobe
PDF files will be accepted for the review process. All submissions must be
made electronically through EDAS.
We will consider three different categories of papers:
- *Full papers* should describe novel research contributions and are
limited in length to eight (8) printed pages (10-point font) including
figures, tables, and references. Papers exceeding 8 pages will not be
accepted at EDAS, nor reviewed at all.
-
*Short papers *should be more visionary in nature and may report on work
in progress without finished results. They are meant to present novel
perspectives, so as to foster discussion about innovative directions and
new points of view. They are limited to at most four (4) pages including
figures, tables, and references, but might in many cases be even shorter.
Accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings and there
will be
given (a shorter) time for oral presentation at the conference.
Please note that the full paper and short paper categories target different
kinds of contributions. Papers submitted to a category will NOT be moved to
a different category: a paper will either be accepted for the category
where it has been submitted, or it will be rejected. Full papers will not
be “downgraded” to short papers. Therefore, please be sure to carefully
assess for yourself prior to submission which is the most suitable
submission category for your paper, and to make sure that the presentation
in the manuscript is well suited to the aims of this category.
-
*Posters* are especially suited for presenting controversial research
directions that may generate discussion, or promising ideas not yet fully
validated through complete extensive evaluation. IEEE VNC 2018 will also
include a demonstration session for researchers to showcase their latest
prototypes with media, models, or live demonstrations. The demo session
will be co-located with the poster session to ensure maximum
visibility and
a close interaction with the conference audience.
We also encourage the authors of the demo papers to include a link to a
short 2-min demonstration video for the reviewers to facilitate the
evaluation of the quality of the demonstration proposal. If a video is
included, we ask that it be hosted on public video hosting service (e.g.,
Vimeo, YouTube, or similar) to ensure the anonymity of the reviewers. The
videos of accepted demonstration proposals will be advertised on the
conference website.
Poster/demo papers should be 2-page papers following standard IEEE
2-column format using 10-point font. All paper submissions must be
written
in English. The title of the paper should begin with either "Poster:" or
"Demo:". Optionally, a poster paper submission can also include an
electronic copy of the poster.
*Important Dates*

Betreff: [failsafe-workshop] FAILSAFE 2018 workshop CFP
Datum: Mon, 16 Jul 2018 10:53:17 +0100
Von: Michael Breza <mjb04(a)doc.ic.ac.uk>
An: failsafe-workshop(a)imperial.ac.uk
Hello,
Here is a CFP for a workshop that will be interesting for all wsn
developers. Basically, If you have had any deployments that have ended
in disaster, and you know why and were able to fix them, or have any
tools that bring modern software engineering practices to WSN
programming, we would love to hear about it. We are also interested in
any use of formal methods for the verification of WSN systems, or WSN
systems used as
part of a larger control system.
FAILSAFE 2018 Call For Papers
The Second ACM International Workshop on the Engineering of Reliable,
Robust,
and Secure Embedded Wireless Sensing Systems
http://wp.doc.ic.ac.uk/failsafe/
The FAILSAFE workshop will provide a forum to discuss tools and
techniques to address the difficulties and challenges of deploying
Embedded Wireless Sensor Systems (EWSS) in the wild, and aim to produce
reliable, robust systems.
We seek submissions of up to 8 pages describing and presenting data of
problems and failures of experimental efforts, practical experiences,
and industrial and commercial developments in all aspects of sensor
networks, mobile devices, and wireless communication. We solicit work
that discusses real Deployments and ways to engineer them, Security of
EWSS, both ways to engineer security at design time, and approaches to
run time security, and Application resilience including designed
resilience for control systems. We encourage submissions of the above
topics of interest that cover, but are not limited to:
We would also like submissions about any tools, methods, techniques, or
approaches to engineer robust and resilient EWSS. This includes
robustness and resilience faults and failures from the environment,
human error, or malicious activities. Examples include novel simulation
frameworks, the use of formal methods like model checking, design
methodologies, languages that explicitly handle faults and failures,
forms of unit, integration, or run time testing, models to test
performance during faults and failures, and anything else relevant to
this discussion.
We address three main areas.
Deployments and how to design them:
- Testing frameworks, models, simulators, formal methods that deal with
sensor system deployment failures, and can be used to prevent similar
failures of wireless sensor systems. This includes failure of the sensor
systems themselves, or the affect that their failure would have on the
application that uses their data. - Monitoring tools, control systems,
or code update systems for use in sensor system deployments to detect
and diagnose node or system performance issues, failures, or malicious
activity.
- Any account of a real ENSS deployment with an emphasis on any design
tools or methodologies used, and an assessment of the benefit that they
provided.
- Examples of a deployment that was tested, and failed due to unexpected
circumstances. The testing methodology must be presented and discussed,
as well as how it failed to account for the phenomenon that caused the
failure, and a potential solution described.
- Failure and the diagnosis of an actual deployment of mobile apps,
networks and systems. Must include some data and analysis of what caused
the failure.
Secure Design and Operation of EWSS:
- Approaches to address faults and failures caused by malicious activity
aimed at the disruption of the EWSS or the application that uses it.
- Formal models of security attacks.
- Secure by design approaches to EWSS. - Runtime security or intrusion
detection systems for EWSS.
- Any documented example of a real EWSS deployment that either was
attacked by malicious agents, or that deployed security mechanisms, with
a description of what was done.
Resilient and Robust Applications and Control:
- Design methods to create applications or controllers that are
resilient and robust to the loss, delay, or corruption of data from an EWSS.
- Applications of formal methods to design and/or verify resilient and
robust sensor networks.
- Examples or methods to engineer coupled communication and control
systems that are resilient and robust.
- Examples of real deployment using wireless sensors for a controller
with instances of failure or any design methodology used, or any
security considerations taken.
Submission Deadline, 17th of August 2018
Notification, 10th of September 2018
Final Version Due, 20th of September 2018
Workshop, 4th of November 2018

Call for Papers
An important goal of pervasive computing is to integrate computer
devices into the users’ everyday life seamlessly. This allows
context-aware applications to gather information about the users to
support them in their daily tasks. A newly attractive source of
information for pervasive computing is provided by mobile and wearable
devices able to detect the emotional state of the users. In many
real-world scenarios, it is essential to use wearable sensors, embedded
in mobile devices such as smartphones and smartwatches, to measure the
emotional state of the user. This would help to understand how emotions
influence processes such as decision making and reasoning. However,
emotion recognition remains to be a complex and challenging task mainly
regarding the following aspects: sensing modalities, data analysis, and
its application in real life.
· Sensing Modalities – what to sense and what kind of sensors
can be used? Physical sensors in mobile devices or biosensors in
wearable devices are currently available.
· Data analysis – different approaches to emotion recognition
are based on different types of collected data. Which one to use?
· Application – How to effectively use the emotion information
in pervasive computing and context-aware applications?
While there have been, many contributions targeting some of these
challenges, there are still unsolved problems. The proposed workshop
will explore the challenges of the sensing, modeling, and recognizing of
emotions by using embedded sensors in smartphones and wearable devices
for pervasive computing. We aim to have unique contributions addressing
these challenges and to provide a discussion space to facilitate
collaboration among researchers interested in emotion recognition for
pervasive computing.
Topics
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Theory, experimental design, computational models, algorithms, and
evolutional investigation in emotion detection for pervasive computing.
* Emotion representations and signal characteristics that describe and
identify emotions.
* Mobile data measurement and collection platforms for emotion detection.
* Approaches to obtaining reliable ground truth and affective data
annotation for emotion research.
* Emotion detection algorithms/approaches using data collected with
mobile devices and wearable devices.
* User studies and evaluation techniques for emotion detection and
automated systems that model and detect emotions.
* Awareness of emotions in collaboration or crowdsourcing.
* The novel use of emotion information in the pervasive computing
applications.
* The application of emotion information for the work-life balance.
* The combined research of emotion recognition and artificial
intelligence (AI).

*POSTERS AND DEMOS*
WiNTECH continues its established tradition of hosting an interactive demo
and poster session, and welcomes proposals for demonstrations of novel work
in wireless network testbeds, measurement platforms and results, and
innovative prototypes. The areas of interest overlap those listed in the
workshop call for papers. The innovations showcased can be at any layer of
the protocol stack, from physical to application. However, we particularly
encourage demonstrations and posters that span over multiple layers and
wireless networking must be their key topic.
The demos must be presented live at the workshop venue, i.e., a
presentation of a powerpoint, video, etc. only is not allowed. The posters
may describe work in progress, while the session will offer an excellent
opportunity to receive feedback and discuss early research. We emphasize
that the poster/demo session is not a forum to display commercial products.
Each submission must be a single PDF file no longer than two pages in
length (including figures, tables, and references), using two-column
format, 10-point size or greater and in PDF format following the same
formatting
guidelines <https://www.sigmobile.org/mobicom/2018/cfp.php> as the main
conference. Papers must include the author name and affiliation. All poster
titles should begin with the keyword "Poster:" and all demo titles should
start with "Demo:". The demo should list the demo requirements at the
workshop venue if they are more than a table. All remaining submission
guidelines are the same as that of the main conference. Papers must include
the author name and affiliation. All poster titles should begin with the
keyword "Poster:" and all demo titles should start with "Demo:". The demo
should list the demo requirements at the workshop venue if they are more
than a table.
Manuscripts must be submitted by using the following HOTCRP conference
management
system link <https://wintech18posters.hotcrp.com/>.

** CALL FOR PAPERS ** IEEE Communications Magazine Feature Topic
Smart Infrastructures for Crowd Management
Recent efforts in the research and industry communities are aimed at
realizing the Smart City, a term utilized for a city that exploits its
distributed computing and communication infrastructure in order to
sense, aggregate, process, discern and act upon various data, with the
objective of bettering the management of the city’s various sector
(e.g., health, education, weather, business, etc.). Traditional efforts
have sought the application of Wireless Sensor Network (WSNs) and RFID
tags, as well as processing of sparsely distributed feeds (e.g., public
and private live CCTV) in order to do the monitoring and processing. An
expanded consideration for the Internet of Things (IoT) applications in
smart cities has been explored with emphasis on facilitating
high-density sensor and actuator deployment. Such an evolution yielded
powerful architectures for enabling smart cities. Fundamental issues,
however, abound in the high cost of deployment and maintenance,
especially when attempting to smarten an existing city infrastructure.
Such serious restraints make the aforementioned advanced technologies
fully viable and attractive for new cities/districts, but reduces their
applicability in the dominant transitional scenarios. Comprehensive and
scalable crowd management infrastructures are required to overcome the
economic and technical constraints of state-of-the-art
conceptualizations and implementations, while maintaining both practical
and commercial appeals.
This Feature Topic Issue, motivated by the latest advances in crowd
management, will tackle outstanding contributions that deal with
state-of-the-art setups, techniques, methodologies, designs and actual
deployment of crowd management solutions. Researchers and engineers from
academia and industry are invited to submit their recent results and
innovations. The list of topics includes, but not restricted to the
following topics:
* Data aggregation and analytics for Mobile Crowd Management.
* Data filtering for crowdsourced information.
* Reputation Scores for Crowd Management through crowdsourcing.
* Crowd inference and classification.
* Trust and privacy in crowd management.
* Optimization of crowd management systems
* Incentive mechanisms for crowdsourcing
* Prediction approaches in Mobile Crowd Management.
* Mobile crowd management quality indicators (Quality of Source,
measurements uncertainty, etc.).
* Network and computing infrastructures for crowd management.
* Geo-positioning schemes for crowd management.
* Smart City indicators inference and classification.
* Crowd management in emergency and disruptive scenarios.
* Infrastructure inference and classification and behavior
characterization.
* Testbeds and real measurements of infrastructures for crowd
management in Smart Cities.
Important Dates
* Manuscript Submission Deadline: August 1, 2018
* Notification of Acceptance/Rejection due date: December 1, 2018
* Final version due date: January 15, 2019
* Publication: March 2019
