=============================================================
The 15th Annual International Conference on
Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems (DCOSS 2019)
May 29-31, 2019
Santorini Island, Greece
www.dcoss.org
=============================================================
DCOSS 2019 is the 15th International Conference on Distributed Computing
in Sensor Systems to be hosted on Santorini Island in Greece, in May
29-31, 2019. In the last few years, we have witnessed a significant
growth in the use of distributed sensor systems in a number of
application areas, ranging from smart transport, energy and buildings,
to factory automation, smart healthcare and environmental monitoring. In
order for smart sensor systems to truly become useful and pervasive, we
need to address a number of research challenges, including the tight
integration of sensing and machine intelligence, reliable and efficient
networking, interoperability and scalability, the need for dependable
autonomy, interaction with humans, and important aspects of security,
privacy and trust. DCOSS focuses on distributed information processing
issues arising in networked sensor systems, covering aspects of high
level abstractions, models and languages, novel algorithms and
applications, system design approaches and architectures, as well as
tools for simulated and real deployments.
Potential authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts
that demonstrate recent advances in both theoretical and experimental
research. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Edge and fog computing: distributed computing models from sensor to cloud
- Energy harvesting models and optimisation
- Machine intelligence in distributed sensor systems and real time analytics
- Communication and networking primitives and protocols
- Autonomy: closing the loop between sensing and actuation
- Task allocation, reprogramming, and reconfiguration
- Robustness, resilience and dependability
- Security and privacy issues
- Approaches, tools, and experience of deployment and operation
- Performance analysis: complexity, correctness, scalability
- Mobile and human-centered sensing
- Interoperability, heterogeneity and scalability
- Crowd sensing and social sensing techniques, applications, and systems
- Complex systems comprising wearable, robotic and/or fixed sensor systems
- Novel and compelling applications

The Internet of Things (IoT) opens the door to new technological
opportunities for a wide range of applications that cover e-health, smart
homes and automation, e-commerce, location-based services, smart vehicles,
fleet management and remote system monitoring. However, at the same time as
these technological opportunities grow so does the threat surface for
potential adversaries targeting at various, interconnected ICT systems and
consequently at ICT-dependent critical systems, such as SCADA (Supervisory
Control and Data Acquisition Systems) systems. At this point, attackers
could take advantage from the incorporation of the paradigm to exploit new
security gaps, probably caused by unforeseen interoperability and
adaptability problems.
Indeed, the deployment of Internet-enabled embedded devices that are
distributed over major critical domains, may create indirect and non-obvious
inter-connections with the underlying Critical Infrastructures (CIs).
Examples of such inter-connected systems may include traffic monitoring and
control systems communicating with smart vehicles, energy related systems
communicating with smart homes and smart meters, monitoring systems
connected with autonomous sensors in nuclear plants, power grids and body
area networks. There is a need to further explore the security issues
related to IoT technologies to assure the resilience of CIs against advanced
IoT-based attacks. The goal of this special issue is therefore to address
the diverse security challenges and related to IoT-enabled CIs (IoT-CIs) and
their resilience to advanced threats.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Security analysis and requirements in the coupling of IoT-CIs
* Vulnerabilities, threat models and risk management in IoT-CIs
* Reference architectures for the secure coupling of IoT in CI scenarios
* Embedded security for mobile devices and BYOD
* Network-layer attacks and defense mechanisms between IoT devices and CIs
* Key management and access control in IoT-CIs
* Resilience models for advanced threats in IoT-CIs
* Advanced and lightweight awareness models for large IoT-CIs
* Privacy and location privacy for IoT-CIs

Special Section on Wirelessly Powered Networks: Algorithms, Applications
and Technologies
Submission Deadline: 30 September 2018
Submit manuscript to: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ieee-access
IEEE Access invites manuscript submissions in the area of Wirelessly
Powered Networks: Algorithms, Applications and Technologies.
Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) is, by definition, a process that occurs
in any system where electrical energy is transmitted from a power source
to a load without the connection of electrical conductors. WPT is the
driving technology that will enable the next stage in the current
consumer electronics revolution, including battery-less sensors, passive
RF identification (RFID), passive wireless sensors, the Internet of
Things and 5G, and machine-to-machine solutions. WPT-enabled devices can
be powered by harvesting energy from the surroundings, including
electromagnetic (EM) energy, leading to a new communication networks
paradigm, the Wirelessly Powered Networks.
While recent advances in wireless utensils appear to be unlimited, the
dependence of their operation on batteries remains a weakness, mainly
because batteries come with a limited lifetime and require a fast charge
time to achieve continuous operation. This is where the technologies of
WPT become useful, bringing together wireless energy and data
transmission. WPT technologies substitute the traditional powering
concept, where a cable or a battery is connected to the wireless device,
by the transmission of energy over the air in an efficient way to
power-up the device.
Wirelessly Powered Networks have recently evolved into a very active
research field, as well as a topic of rapid technological progress,
emerging practical developments and standardization activities. However,
a solid foundational, technological, and applied background is still
necessary for Wirelessly Powered Networks to achieve their full
potential. The provisioning of relevant technological models,
algorithmic design and analysis methods, networking principles, circuit
and system design, and application methodologies is a challenging task.
This Special Section in IEEE Access invites academic and industrial
experts to make their contributions on Wirelessly Powered Networks. It
will selectively span a coherent, large spectrum of fundamental aspects
of WPT, and will focus on three main thematic pillars and relevant
themes: Algorithms, Applications and Technologies.
The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Algorithms
- Optimization and approximation algorithms (mobility/energy/data
management)
- Joint operation scheduling (routing, data gathering, ambient
harvesting)
- Precise algorithmic models and efficient distributed protocols
- WPT devices deployment
- Safety provisioning through EM radiation control algorithms
- Peer-to-peer and crowd charging algorithms
- Algorithms for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer
(SWIPT)
Applications
- Medical implants and wearable devices
- Automotive technology and electric vehicles
- Mobile communications, wireless sensor networks and UAVs
- Spacecraft engineering
- Home/Industrial appliances
- Standardization, regulations and biological effects
- Solutions for SWIPT
Technologies
- RF energy harvesting, rectennas and rectenna arrays
- High-frequency rectifying circuits, power transmitters and devices
- Near-field (inductive, resonant) energy transfer
- Microwave transmission and beaming
- Novel materials, fabrication techniques
- Energy storage elements, RFID-related electronics and self-powered
sensors
- Measurement and characterization approaches for WPT components
We also highly recommend the submission of multimedia with each article
as it significantly increases the visibility, downloads, and citations
of articles.

*Call for Papers: Special Issue on Self-Awareness in Resource
Constrained Cyber-Physical Systems*
Inspired by biological examples, self-awareness has become a hot
research topic in a variety of disciplines and its applicability has
been explored in various application domains. The topic owes its
attractiveness to its promise to facilitate highly resilient, adaptive
and outstandingly efficient behaviors. Thus, self-awareness holds the
promise to promote dependability in all types of smart gadgets and
artificial agents in the interconnected world of future.
However, the challenges raised by these new promising features are also
significant, not least because they have a profound impact on the way we
design, validate and test incorporating self-awareness. If a system
smartly adapts to changing needs and environment, how do we validate its
functionality at design time? How do we specify the correct
functionality in the first place? What are the relevant trade-offs? How
can we quantify uncertainties and variabilities in a meaningful way to
deal with them in the design process? These are only some of the
pressing questions that have to be addressed before these new features
can be exploited.
The ACM Transactions on Cyber-Physical Systems seeks original
manuscripts for a special issue on “Self-Awareness in Resource
Constrained Cyber-Physical Systems” which will cover recent development
on methods, architecture, design, validation and application of
resource-constrained cyber-physical systems that exhibit a degree of
self-awareness.
*Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:*
• Self-monitoring and self-assessment of distributed CPS
• Reliability, safety and security in CPS based on self-awareness
• Ongoing learning, reasoning, self-modelling and knowledge management,
at run-time

• Robust control for resource management and self-awareness
• Applications for self-aware CPS

*Instructions for paper submission*
-------------------------------------------------
All paper submissions must be written in English and must be formatted in
standard IEEE 2-column format. The mandatory IEEE template in Microsoft
Word and LaTeX format can be found at the IEEE templates page. Only Adobe
PDF files will be accepted for the review process. All submissions must be
made electronically through EDAS.
We will consider three different categories of papers:
- *Full papers* should describe novel research contributions and are
limited in length to eight (8) printed pages (10-point font) including
figures, tables, and references. Papers exceeding 8 pages will not be
accepted at EDAS, nor reviewed at all.
-
*Short papers *should be more visionary in nature and may report on work
in progress without finished results. They are meant to present novel
perspectives, so as to foster discussion about innovative directions and
new points of view. They are limited to at most four (4) pages including
figures, tables, and references, but might in many cases be even shorter.
Accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings and there will be
given (a shorter) time for oral presentation at the conference.
Please note that the full paper and short paper categories target different
kinds of contributions. Papers submitted to a category will NOT be moved to
a different category: a paper will either be accepted for the category
where it has been submitted, or it will be rejected. Full papers will not
be “downgraded” to short papers. Therefore, please be sure to carefully
assess for yourself prior to submission which is the most suitable
submission category for your paper, and to make sure that the presentation
in the manuscript is well suited to the aims of this category.
-
*Posters* are especially suited for presenting controversial research
directions that may generate discussion, or promising ideas not yet fully
validated through complete extensive evaluation. IEEE VNC 2018 will also
include a demonstration session for researchers to showcase their latest
prototypes with media, models, or live demonstrations. The demo session
will be co-located with the poster session to ensure maximum visibility and
a close interaction with the conference audience.
We also encourage the authors of the demo papers to include a link to a
short 2-min demonstration video for the reviewers to facilitate the
evaluation of the quality of the demonstration proposal. If a video is
included, we ask that it be hosted on public video hosting service (e.g.,
Vimeo, YouTube, or similar) to ensure the anonymity of the reviewers. The
videos of accepted demonstration proposals will be advertised on the
conference website.
Poster/demo papers should be 2-page papers following standard IEEE
2-column format using 10-point font. All paper submissions must be written
in English. The title of the paper should begin with either "Poster:" or
"Demo:". Optionally, a poster paper submission can also include an
electronic copy of the poster.
