IEEE SMARTCOMP 2020
Call for Papers
22-25 June 2020, Bologna, Italy
http://www.smart-comp.org
--------------------------------------------------------------
SMARTCOMP is the premier IEEE conference on smart computing.
Smart computing is based on the synergistic combination of advances in
Sensor-based technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical
Systems, Edge cloud computing, Big Data analytics, Machine Learning,
Cognitive Computing, and Artificial Intelligence.
Smart computing is a multidisciplinary domain. Applications of smart
computing can be found in different societal domains including, but not
limited to, transportation, energy, environmental protection, smart and
connected communities, healthcare, banking, entertainment, and social
media. Algorithmic and system advancements of edge cloud computing,
mobile/pervasive computing, cyber-physical systems, sensor networking and
social computing are taking smart computing to a new dimension and
improving our ways of living.
SMARTCOMP 2020 is the 6th edition of the conference and will be held in the
historical city of Bologna, Italy, hosted by the University of Bologna, the
holdest University of the western world. SMARTCOMP 2020 will include smart
computing innovations pertaining to pervasive/ubiquitous computing, edge
cloud computing, sensor networks, IoT, big data analytics, security and
privacy, social computing, cognitive computing, cyber-physical systems and
their application and validation within smart computing environments. This
includes applications such as smart buildings, smart cities, smart grids,
precision agriculture and other innovations contributing to smart living.
Submission Guidelines
--------------------
Paper submissions must be no longer than 8 pages and formatted according to
the two-column IEEE proceedings template. IEEE provides corresponding
formatting templates at IEEE conference template. Make sure to use the
conference mode of the template, i.e., LaTeX users must use the conference
option of the IEEEtran document class.
Papers must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file on US Letter
size paper (not A4), with all fonts embedded (the PDF-A standard complies
with that), through EDAS (https://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=26894). Prior to
submission, ensure that any running headers/footers, page numbering, as
well as blue underlining for URLs and email addresses has been removed.
All submitted papers will be subject to peer reviews by Technical Program
Committee members and other experts in the field. All presented papers will
be published in the conference proceedings and submitted to the IEEE Xplore
Digital Library.
Topics
------
SMARTCOMP 2020 solicits submissions that address the fundamental questions
of smart computing, namely how to design and build smart computing systems
and how to use computing technology for resource sustainability to improve
the human experience. Submissions should thus match to at least one of the
following three major fields of interest:
SMART COMPUTING CONCEPTS, MODELS, AND ALGORITHMS:
-----------------------------------------------
Future Smart Computing Paradigms
Models of Smart Environments
Algorithms for Smart Computing
AI and Machine Learning in Smart Computing
Edge computing algorithms
SMART COMPUTING SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGIES:
------------------------
Cyber-physical System Platforms for Smart Environments
Middleware Platforms for Smart Environments

Topics:
(1) IoT technologies in Sustainable Energy and Environment
IoT is expected to be a major producer of big data. Sharing and
collaboration of data and other resources would be the key for enabling
sustainable ubiquitous environments, such as smart cities and societies.
A timely fusion and analysis of big data, acquired from IoT and other
sources, to enable highly efficient, reliable, and accurate
decision-making and management of ubiquitous environments would be a
grand future challenge. Computational intelligence would play a key role
in this challenge (Furqan Alam, et al. 2017). The new era of Web and IoT
paradigm is being enabled by the proliferation of various devices like
RFIDs, sensors, and actuators. Smart devices are embedded in the
environment to monitor and collect ambient information. In smart cities,
intelligent services could be offered on top of such information related
to any aspect of humans' activities. Some examples of services able to
guarantee sustainable environments are IoT-enabled waste management, the
use of IoT hardware and software technologies for the buildings energy
efficiency in terms of reducing energy consumption and improving the
internal comfort, smart grids, smart homes, physical security, enhanced
street lighting controls, infrastructure monitoring, public safety and
surveillance in indoor and outdoor environments.
(2) E-health
Emerging ICT technologies are playing more and more a very important
role in the Healthcare sector. The efficiency of healthcare
infrastructures and biomedical systems is one of the most challenging
goals of modern-day society (Nguyen et al. 2019). In fact, the need of
delivering quality care to patients while reducing the healthcare costs
and, at the same time, tackling the nursing staff shortage problem is a
primary issue. Furthermore, innovative solutions able to support and
improve the elderly people quality of life exploiting emerging
technologies enabling the IoT are fundamentals to create the new smart
cities, thought also for people no so young. Furthermore, the behavioral
analysis of elderly people is an important science aiming to prevent
Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and frailty problems. A fundamental
aspect in this context is to explore the use of innovative technologies
enabling the Internet of Things (IoT), above all sensors, to
unobtrusively capture personal data for automatically recognizing
behavioral changes in elderly people. Artificial Intelligence, based on
Machine Learning or Deep Learning techniques, represents a valid
candidate to face these challenges.
(3) IoT technologies in Transportation and Low Carbon Products
Smart transportation, also known as intelligent transportation systems,
is another important IoT-based application, in which intelligent
transportation management, control system, communication networks, and
computing techniques are integrated to make transportation systems
reliable, efficient, and secure (Lin et al., 2015). In the smart
transportation system, a large number of smart vehicles are included and
connected with each other through wireless networks. Smart vehicles can
efficiently perceive and share traffic data and schedule drivers’
travels with great efficiency, reliability, and safety. Recently, smart
vehicles with Self-Driving have been designed and tested. Those smart
vehicles can detect objects around them and safely manage speed during
traveling without the operation of drivers. IoT-aware technologies such
as software architecture based on Cloud-, Edge-or Fog-Computing play a
very important role to face these challenges. Another important topic,
in the smart transportation field is related to security issue, in
particular managed with the block chain approach.
(4) Smart Cities
Smart cities can be considered a complex IoT paradigm, which aims to
manage public affairs via introducing information and communication
technology (ICT) solutions (Zanella et al., 2014). Smart cities can use
public resources in more efficient ways, resulting in the improvement of
the QoSs provided to users and the reduction of operational costs to
public administrators. Smart cities may consist of several sub
applications or services, including the smart gird, smart
transportation, smart hospital, smart building, smart waste management,
environmental monitoring, smart health, smart lighting, etc. All these
sub applications, or services, should be supported by a unified
communication network infrastructure, or communication networks designed
for these sub applications or services should be interconnected to
establish a large-scale interconnected heterogeneous network for IoT
applications, with the aim of achieving the best use of public resources
in cities (Lin et al. 2017).

Pervasive and Mobile Computing
CALL FOR PAPERS for Special Issue on
Mobile and Social Sensing
https://www.journals.elsevier.com/pervasive-and-mobile-computing/call-for-p…
**************************************************************************************************************************************************
The ubiquity of smart phones together with the popularity of social
media heralds an era of mobile and social sensing. Mobile and social
sensing is becoming a paradigm for collecting observations of the
physical phenomena, either directly from human observers, or by means of
crowd-sourcing the data measurement tasks using sensors in the smart
phones or various other wearables (e.g., Google Glass, Apple Watch, and
Fitbit devices). It thus involves massive amount of sensory data
collection and/or dissemination where humans can act as sensor carriers
(e.g., carrying GPS sensors that share location data), sensor operators
(e.g., taking pictures and videos with smart phones), or as sensors
themselves (e.g., sharing their observations on social media). This
emerging field faces new challenges in data collection, dissemination,
fusion, and mining; cognitive modeling; computational social and
behavior science; information and coding theory; information processing
and knowledge discovery; data dissemination and forwarding, reliability,
privacy, and security; and cyber-physical-systems with
human-in/on-the-loop. This special issue invites technical papers on
both theoretical contributions and systems describing original ideas,
exciting results, and real-world experiences in the context of mobile
and social sensing.
This special issue will focus on (but not be limited to) the following
topics:
+ Mobile, ubiquitous, and pervasive sensing
+ Social sensing and social networks as sensor networks
+ Crowd/participatory and opportunistic sensing
+ Rural sensing
+ Urban sensing and smart city

### 2nd IEEE Workshop on Cyber-Physical Networking (CPN’20) ###
###############################################################
Co-located with the
IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference (CCNC 2020)
in Las Vegas, USA.
10. January 2020, Las Vegas, USA
https://ccnc2020.ieee-ccnc.org/workshop/2nd-ieee-workshop-cyber-physical-ne…
Low-latency networking and the increasing data rates of communication
systems have been major research objectives of the past decades. The
corresponding research efforts lead to the modern information society of
today. Recently, we see a rapid spread of cyber-physical applications
such as telemedicine, smart production, and infrastructure systems.
These systems build the backbone of Industry 4.0 environments, for
example, and operate with feedback control loops that are closed over
communication channels and, thus, impose real-time requirements for the
communication. Predictably low latency is a necessary property, however,
it challenges concurring requirements for high reliability, spectral,
and energy efficiency in particular when wireless links used. Classical
approaches for the independent design of communication and control have
reached their limits for quite some time.
The research objective in the area of cyber-physical networking is to
develop a theoretical and practical basis for the paradigmatic change
from throughput- to real-time-oriented communication in networked
control systems. In order to meet the requirements of cyber-physical
applications, a tight (horizontal and vertical) integration of all
communication, control, and system components is necessary in order to
fully exploit their individual elasticity and mutual adjustment
potential. We understand cyber-physical networking as including all
aspects of such a system, in particular network and communication,
control and the physical system itself. Ultimately, this workshop aims
to bring together leading researchers in the area of communication,
control and systems design - to share views on approaches to bring
together these domains for enabling cyber-physical networking.

The workshop allows two types of submissions: papers & demos.
Submitted papers must represent original material that is not currently
under review in any other conference or journal, and has not been
previously published. All paper submissions should be written in English
with a maximum paper length of six (6) printed pages (10-point font)
following the IEEE format.
All demo submissions come in form of an extended abstract with a maximum
length of two (2) printed pages with the same format as paper
submissions. At the workshop, demos are required to bring a poster (A0)
that accompanies their presentation. We also encourage the paper authors
to optionally present a demo. This does not require a separate
submission of an extended abstract but is covered by the paper submission.
We encourage the submission of courageous research ideas and proposals
that explore the potential of cyber-physical networks, also off the
beaten track.

AWAKE - 1st Workshop on Wake-Up radio technologies for next generation
wireless communications
in conjunction with EWSN 2020, Lyon France, February 17, 2020

Lowering energy consumption is one of the most pursued goals of next
generation wireless communication to ensure long-term applications. In
recent years, wake-up radio has emerged, enabling pure asynchronous
wireless communication that eliminates energy waste due to idle
listening. These devices allow continuous channel monitoring while
consuming orders of magnitude less power than traditional
transceivers. On the one hand, many efforts are made to design wake-up
radio circuit with low power consumption and low sensitivity. On the
other hand, this technology changes network paradigm as dedicated
access and network protocols should be designed.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers both from
academia and industry to exchange and share their experiences and
research results related to wake-up radio emerging technology.
Specific topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Wake-Up radio circuit and architecture design
- Coding, modulation and signal processing for Wake-Up radio
- Heterogeneous communication (or Multi-transceiver) and protocols
- MAC protocol leveraging Wake-up radio
- Cross-layer design for Wake-Up radio
- Communication and networking for wireless systems using Wake-Up
