IEEE World Forum on Internet of Things
5-9 April 2020 – New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Special Session on IoT for Emergency Response and Disaster Recovery
https://wfiot2020.iot.ieee.org/special-sessions-track-19-4/
CALL FOR PAPERS
******************************************************************************
Natural and manmade disasters can occur unpredictably and range in severity
from something locally manageable to large scale events that require
external
intervention. Smaller scale events typically involve local law
enforcement and
emergency responders. On the other hand, when large scale disasters
occur, they
can cause widespread damage and overwhelm the ability of local
governments and
authorities to respond. In such situations, Civil-Military Cooperation
(CIMIC)
is essential for a rapid and robust response.
Across the spectrum of these operations, IoT, Smart Cities, and Smart
Environments can significantly improve the ability of emergency
responders to
quickly understand the situation and conditions (also known as developing
Situation Awareness). IoT can help with assessing potential damage that has
been caused (e.g., to the city infrastructure, communications and power
grid,
road conditions, transportation services, etc.). Application of IoT to
supply
chain management can provide very rapid insights into the logistical
situation
and result it faster resupply of critically needed materials.
User-centered /
peer-to-peer IoT services can enable victims to help each other, thereby
accelerating the recovery effort. Finally, pervasive deployment of IoT
in the
context of hospitals and medical services can improve triage and care
for those
in need.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCOPE AND TOPICS
The scope and technical topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Smart city monitoring and leveraging services in smart city environments
for disaster response and other activities.
* Integration of IoT capabilities into Emergency Response Centers.
* Requirements, examples, and use cases for deployment of IoT for disaster
relief and emergency response.
* IoT data analytics and visualization for emergency response.
* Service-oriented computing, standards and standardization of APIs
for IoT
and smart cities.
* Applications of IoT for logistics and supply chain management,
especially
in the context of disaster relief.
* Applications of IoT for emergency medical response, including
monitoring of
hospital conditions (availability of space, supplies, and needed
expertise
/ equipment).
* Novel integration of IoT-based physiological monitors and emergency
responders for triage.
* IoT to monitor critical infrastructure, including power grid,
transportation, and communications.
* Challenges and solutions to deploying and using IoT in degraded
environments (e.g., when infrastructure, communications, and electrical
power may be limited).
* Architectural aspects of bridging civilian and military IoT
infrastructure,
including federation, security, information, and communication
architectures, work flow / business processes, interoperability and
Integration of disparate technologies.
* Information management challenges for military application of IoT –
trustworthiness, pedigree, provenance, and enabling military
commanders and
missions to benefit from IoT generated information.
* Examples of physical instantiations of military IoT systems built from
commercially available elements and architectures.
* Security challenges related to co-existence and interconnection of
military
and civilian IoT networks.
* Resilience to adversarial security attacks and misuse / abuse of IoT
infrastructure and capabilities.
* Challenges related to reliability and dependability, especially when IoT
becomes mission critical.
* Zero-configuration or other approaches to simplify the deployment and
configuration of IoT, especially in coalition settings where
disparate IoT
resources need to coexist and interoperate.
* Knowledge discovery, including semantic and syntax discovery of
information
provided by IoT.
* Challenges related to actuation of IoT devices, especially with
real-time
requirements
* Power challenges for tactically deployed IoT devices.

KuVS-Fachgespräch Fog Computing
26-27 March 2020, Essen
https://sites.google.com/view/fachgespraechfog/
The "Fachgespräch" workshop series of the Communication and
Distributed Systems (KuVS) special interest group of the German
Society for Computer Science (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Informatik,
GI) and the Information Technology Society of VDE
(Informationstechnische Gesellschaft, ITG) offers scientists the
possibility to exchange ideas in focus research areas, and to
strengthen cooperation in these areas.
The KuVS-Fachgespräch Fog Computing offers a platform to present
fundamental as well as application-oriented research results in the
field. Fog Computing is nowadays widely accepted as a useful
alternative to local solutions and (Cloud-based) centralized
approaches to data processing. While Fog Computing provides a wide
range of possible application areas, many important fundamental
research questions have not been covered in depth yet. Therefore, it
is the goal of the KuVS-Fachgespräch Fog Computing to identify
research issues arising by the volatility of IoT-based smart systems,
and the potentially very quickly changing system landscapes, and to
identify how concrete research contributions in the field of Fog
Computing can help to overcome these issues.
To achieve this, researchers from different subfields of computer
science and related areas are invited to present their thoughts and
ideas in the field of Fog Computing, including, but not limited to
research in the fields of:
* Networking aspects to enable Fog Computing
* Protocols and algorithms for distributed Fog Computing systems
* Cloud Computing
* Internet of Things
* Software engineering methodologies for Fog Computing systems
* Cyber-Physical Systems and embedded systems in Fog Computing
* Blockchains and the Fog
* Service models and service management for the Fog
* Reliability and performance engineering for the Fog
* Privacy and security considerations in Fog Computing
* User interaction and usability in Fog Computing
* Optimization problems and optimization algorithms in Fog Computing
* Other related computing paradigms like edge computing, dew
computing, and mist computing

===============================================================
4TH IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON FOG AND EDGE COMPUTING (ICFEC 2020)
11-14 May, 2020, Melbourne, Australia
In conjunction with IEEE/ACM CCGrid 2020
URL: http://dream-lab.cds.iisc.ac.in/icfec2020/
================================================================
We are delighted to invite you to Melbourne, Australia for the 4th IEEE
International Conference on Fog and Edge Computing. The Conference will
be held as part of and in conjunction with IEEE/ACM CCGrid, 2020, which
is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and ACM.
INTRODUCTION
The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is incorporating “things” from the
physical world into the Internet environment to enhance the monitoring
and intelligent control of physical, digital and social systems. Such
things include smart infrastructures like power grids with sensing and
actuation capabilities, mobile platforms like smart phones and vehicles,
and consumer electronics and appliances such as refrigerators and
healthcare devices. In conventional cloud-centric IoT applications, the
observational streams from these things at the edge of the network are
extracted, accumulated and processed centrally at public/private clouds,
and the responses are communicated back to the things, leading to
significant latency and bandwidth costs.
To meet the ever-increasing demand for computing resources from
distributed applications in the wide area network, academics and
industry experts are advocating the use of micro data centers to
supplement large cloud data centers. These micro data centers, also
called fog resources, are located at the edge of the network, closer to
a user in the spatial and/or network topology than cloud data centers.
Further, edge devices such as smart phones and gateways themselves have
non-trivial compute capacity and are even closer to the user. As a
result, it is possible to utilize both the edge and fog resources to
off-load computation that would traditionally have been carried out on
the cloud.
The "Fog/Edge computing paradigm" is expected to improve the agility of
service deployments, make use of opportunistic and cheap computing, and
leverage the network latency and bandwidth diversities between these
resources. Numerous challenges arise when using fog and edge computing
infrastructure, which requires the re-examination of operating systems,
virtualization and containers, and middleware techniques for fabric
management. Extensions to current programming and storage models are
required and new abstractions that will allow developers to design novel
applications that can benefit from massively distributed and
data-driven systems need to be developed. Addressing security, privacy
and trust of the edge and fog resources is of paramount importance while
managing the resources and context for mobile, transient and hardware
constrained resources. Lastly, emerging domains like autonomous vehicles
and machine/deep learning need to be supported over such platforms.
CALL FOR PAPERS
The conference seeks to attract high-quality contributions covering both
theory and practice over system software and domain-specific
applications related to Edge, Fog and Cloud computing. Some
representative topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

* Call for Papers *
By leveraging the global interconnection of billions of tiny smart
objects, the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is fostering the idea
of pervasive Smart Environments (SEs) and Smart Urban Ecosystems,
where all the data gathered by the ``Things'' can be elaborated and
used to improve the livability, the safety and the security of the
environment, and to make inhabitants lives easier. However, despite
the research advancements in recent years, many open issues still
prevent the full realization of such vision.
To meet the requirements of SEs, telecommunication systems should
support significantly high data rates, traffic capacity, connection
density, energy efficiency, as well as small latency. Being massively
distributed into the environment, smart objects may generate, collect,
exchange and process big data, provide distributed services, offer
computational resources, and cooperate to perform some tasks locally,
as well as to delegate their execution to more powerful nodes in the
cloud or at the network edge. In addition to the traditional
pull-based data delivery, push-based and publish/subscribe traffic
patterns must be supported. To accommodate newly emerging more
demanding services the network infrastructure should be agile, cost
effective and possibly softwarized. The satisfaction of security and
privacy requirements will play a fundamental role in the SEs; indeed,
without effective mechanisms, attacks and malfunctions in the IoT will
outweigh any of their benefits.
The PERSIST-IoT workshop aims to solicit a collection of innovative
papers reporting the most recent advancements in the fields of smart
architecture, protocols and practical implementations enabling IoT for
smart environments. Topics of interests include, but are not limited
to the following:
· Models of network component interactions on smart environments;
· Distributed sensing and control in smart environments;
· Mobile-aware cloud computing models, infrastructures, and
approaches for smart environments;
· Mobile edge computing for smart environments;
· Crowdsourcing in smart environments;
· IoT architecture and middleware;
· Novel communication protocols for M2M/MTC communication;
· Novel networking paradigms (e.g., ICN, SDN) for IoT;
· Energy efficient solutions for IoT;
· Device-2-device communications (D2D);
· Reliability, security, privacy and trust in smart environment
ecosystems;
· Business models to promote user collaboration and resource
sharing in smart environments;
· Testbeds demonstrating the feasibility of smart environments;
· Applications, business, standards, and social issues.
