W4: 5G-enabled Safety and Support Services for Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility
25 April 2021, Helsinki, Finland
Co-located with VTC2021-Spring<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fevents.vt…>
Safety and support services running on top of 5G network infrastructures have a great opportunity to facilitate cooperative, connected and automated mobility (CCAM) for automotive and transport verticals in a variety of road conditions and operational environments. As the rollouts of commercial 5G networks continue all over the world, the increasing coverage and continuously evolving capabilities of the technology make it an ideal connectivity platform for a variety of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication scenarios. Critical network-based services enhancing the road traffic safety are able to exploit the ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) services offered by 5G. Other non-critical support services can rely on enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and massive machine type communications (mMTC) services provided by 5G networks and facilitate the operation of the intelligent road transport systems as well as the comfort and wellbeing of the drivers and passengers.
The aim of the workshop is to exploit these opportunities from several perspectives. First, the workshop distributes the latest results assessing the suitability of the currently standardised 5G functionalities in a variety of CCAM scenarios. Second, the workshop discusses the gaps identified in the existing 5G capabilities when it comes to the heterogeneous requirements, stemming from these scenarios, and offers new technological solutions to fill the identified gaps. Third, the workshop considers novel services and concepts that 5G networks would enable to improve the safety and performance of CCAM.
The workshop is organised by the EU Horizon 2020 5G-HEART<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2F5gheart.o…> and Celtic-Next 5G-SAFE-Plus<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2F5gsafeplu…> projects.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
· 5G technologies and networks for the automotive and transport verticals
· Cellular V2X (C-V2X) communications
· Network slicing supporting CCAM
· Licensed, shared and unlicensed spectrum models supporting CCAM
· Utilisation of sensor network and Internet of things (IoT) infrastructures for CCAM
· Quality of service/experience (QoS/QoE) assurance for CCAM
· CCAM privacy and security issues
· Critical network-based road traffic safety services utilising URLLC
· Non-critical network-based support services utilising eMBB and mMTC

Scope of the workshop
----------------------------------
Wireless Sensor, Robot and UAV networks are characterized by the
coordination and mobility of nodes that are able to accomplish
distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and
mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a
whole new set of possibilities. Specialized networked systems, made of
intelligent devices (such as robots and UAVs), may deploy, repair and
relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network
partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape
routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and to respond to
reported events in a timely and effective manner. Also, they might be
able to integrate within existing and upcoming mobile infrastructures
(e.g. the 5G), by enabling the sensing operations on complex and dynamic
scenarios, and to process the data on the edge or to offload them toward
existing cloud services. The benefits are limited only by imagination.
As an emerging field, ground and aerial robotic systems are in need of
new networking techniques as well as of novel cloud/edge architectures
for data gathering and processing that might unlock the potentials of
such systems. To this purpose, WiSARN aims at bringing together
state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and
implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current
and future applications of sensor robotic and aerial networks. IEEE
WiSARN 2021 will serve as incubator for scientific communities that
share a particular research agenda in the area of the workshop’s topics.
Moreover, it will provide its participants with opportunities to
understand the major technical and application challenges of UAV/Robot
networking as well as exchange and discuss scientific and engineering
ideas related to their architecture, protocol, algorithm, and
application design.

considered for acceptance as Notes papers. Paper review will follow a
standard double-blind policy. As has been realized for the last
conferences in this series, selected full papers will have the option of
being fast-tracked to a high-quality journal.
A full paper submission may extend the author’s previous extended
abstract or workshop paper, provided those extensions are substantial.
In such cases, authors should (i) acknowledge their own previous
workshop publications with an anonymous citation and (ii) explain the
differences between the e-Energy submission and the prior workshop paper.
Notes Paper Submissions:
Notes papers, up to 4 pages in 9-point ACM double-column excluding
references and appendices, are intended to discuss preliminary research
results, advocate new research directions, or present industrial
projects. Notes will be reviewed based on the novelty of their ideas,
potential for impact, and quality of presentation. Paper review will
follow a double-blind policy.
Operational Systems Paper Submissions:
Operational systems papers, up to 10 pages in 9-point ACM double-column
format excluding references and appendices, describe the design,
implementation, analysis, and experience with large-scale, operational
systems in the field. While they may not necessarily describe new ideas,
they are welcome if they disprove or strengthen existing assumptions,
deepen the understanding of existing problems, and validate known
techniques in real-world environments in which they have never been
applied before. The goal of these papers is to provide new insights and
learnings to the research community that can only be obtained from real
world implementation and deployments. Authors should indicate in the
submission form that they are submitting to this track. Submissions to
the operational systems track should also be double-blind. However,
given the nature of these papers, it is okay to reveal the company or
system name (but NOT author names and affiliations).
COVID-19 related information:
While an on-site conference is preferred by the organizers, the current
pandemic might force us to switch to a hybrid or fully online event. The
decision on this will be published on April 20th, 2021 (author
notification deadline), at the latest. Online attendance will be possible.

Dear colleagues,
You are cordially invited to submit your latest research results to the
IEEE Wireless Communications Special Issue on
Aerial Computing: Drones for Multi-Access Edge Computing
Call for Papers
With the explosive development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G
communications, multi-access edge computing (MEC) has emerged as an
effective solution to help mobile devices deal with
computation-intensive and delay-sensitive applications. However,
computing servers are usually embedded in fixed access points (APs) or
base stations (BSs), and thus pose many disadvantages. Recently, a new
paradigm of drone-enabled aerial computing has drawn extensive attention
due to drones’ mobility, flexibility, and maneuverability. When the
computing servers embedded in APs/BSs are overloaded or unavailable,
drones can be quickly deployed to designated areas to meet temporary
and/or unexpected demands. Moreover, benefiting from line-of-sight
properties of air-ground links, aerial computing can effectively reduce
task delay and transmission energy consumption as compared to
terrestrial computing. In particular, aerial computing can play an
important role in disaster areas, emergency relief and battlefields,
which are lacking available terrestrial infrastructures.
Despite its many advantages, aerial computing also presents some
challenges. For instance, due to the high mobility of drones, aerial
computing is significantly different from terrestrial computing.
Specifically, wireless links to/from a drone vary significantly over
time, thus requiring elaborate design of the drone’s trajectory, task
allocation and resource management. Meanwhile, in order to ensure low
transmission energy consumption and task delay, computing and
communication resources also need to be precisely allocated over time.
The energy efficient trajectory plan of a drone is very important to
extend its service time. In addition, due to the limited computing
ability of a single drone, multiple drones are worth considering to
simultaneously provide computing service, wherein the movement control,
cooperation, and the resource allocation of multiple drones all require
elaborate design.
This Special Issue (SI) brings together the latest research and
innovation on aerial computing. All submissions should neither have been
published previously nor be currently under consideration for
publication elsewhere. This special issue covers research, development,
application, and all other aspects of this field. Authors are invited to
submit manuscripts on topics including, but not limited to, the following:
New architectures, frameworks, and protocols for aerial computing
Computation offloading, trajectory design and resource allocation for
aerial computing
Spectrum management and multiple access schemes for aerial computing
Energy efficiency, energy harvesting, and green operation for aerial
computing
Joint optimization of computing, communication, caching, and control for
aerial computing

Aerial computing for edge intelligence in large-scale sensor networks
Security and privacy-preserving approaches for aerial computing
Design and optimization for aerial-ground cooperative computing
Aerial computing for industrial IoT applications
