*CALL FOR PAPERS *
Special Issue on
*DISTRIBUTED INTELLIGENCE AT THE EDGE FOR THE FUTURE INTERNET OF THINGS* -
/
JOURNAL OF PARALLEL AND DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING////
/
*WEBSITE:*
https://www.journals.elsevier.com/journal-of-parallel-and-distributed-compu…
**IMPOTRANT DATES:*
*Submission deadline: 31-May-2021
Acceptance deadline: 31-Oct-2021
Publication: late 2021
*
SCOPE*:
Currently and even more in the future, business, industry, finance and
retail, healthcare, media, entertainment and many others, are and will be
completely managed, coordinated, and controlled using huge amounts of data.
These operations are performed by the Internet of Things (IoT) system of
connected computing, digital, and mechanical devices, all of them named
using unique identifiers (UIDs) and able to transfer data over a network
without human intervention.
To extract value from such massive data volumes, processing power offered
by cloud computing is still utilized. However, streaming data to the cloud
exposes some limitations related to the increased communication and data
transfer, which introduces delays and consumes network bandwidth. Another
limitation that cloud-based computing for IoT poses is limited network
connectivity. Therefore, the adoption of cloud computing to process data
generated by IoT devices may not be applicable at all to classes of
applications such as those needed for real-time, low latency, and mobile
applications. Therefore, it is beyond imagination to use cloud computing to
collect data, store, and work out results. Therefore, there has been a move
towards mobile communication and edge computing. Billions of devices have
been connected to the Internet and created zettabytes of data items. The
problem remains on how to extract information from collected data best.
The use of Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, neural network, and
data analytic techniques in edge processing resulted in a new
inter-disciplinary field that enables distributed intelligence with edge
devices and is known as distributed edge AI or edge intelligence. However,
research on edge AI and distributed edge AI is still relatively new, and
thus models, techniques, and protocols supporting intelligent management,
querying and mining of large-scale amounts of data produced at the edge are
required. A lot of challenges related to providing edge intelligence
include training edge devices, so they can become smarter and smarter.
There is also a need of the presentation of the most recent outcome of
research of distributed intelligence. This need could be illustrated by a
smart city that contains for instance: garages, parkings, car washing
systems, traffic unloading centrals etc. – usually belonging to different
companies and running different protocols. A most likely scenario is that
these devices could use different AI systems to support their activities.
However, all of them are parts of one interconnected smart city; different
AI systems must cooperate for common goal(s). Thus, we need distributed
intelligence. Examples and different AI systems working for different edges
could be multiplied; they support a variety of edges. All want to make
money, kick competitors from the market out, and grab their systems.
Furthermore, there is an emphasis on creating better software and
algorithms that can run efficiently on resource-constrained devices.
Moreover, purpose-built hardware at the edge is becoming increasingly
important in the field of machine learning because companies can run
software much more efficiently if they use specialized chips. Another key
challenge of distributed edge AI will be the continued improvement of user
interfaces that are used to communicate with other humans, including text,
voice, vision, and different forms of body language.
These only are some of the challenges of edge intelligence. This field is
expected to arise in the upcoming years and become an essential part of the
next generation of the Internet of Things that expands its reach into
almost every domain. Therefore, this Special Issue seeks to identify and
provide high-quality research on recent advances on edge AI and distributed
edge AI. We are interested in all aspects pertaining to this
multidisciplinary paradigm.

NetSys and the COVID-19 pandemic
--------------------------------------------------
Reallistically, it is currently (i.e. mid-April 2021) impossible to predict
in which format NetSys 2021 can take place in September. We aim at a
face-to-face event which seems still possible due to Lübeck’s location in
the low incidence area of Schleswig-Holstein and the anticipated massive
increase in vaccination until September. However, we are also preparing a
hybrid backup solution, even though this would only substitute a rather
limited subset of an event like NetSys - where personal meetings play a
very important role. Fortunately, we are still in the situation of not
having to make a final decision on the conference format at the moment. As
soon as this becomes clearer, we will inform you via all conceivable channels!

CALL FOR PAPERS TECHNICAL SYMPOSIA
IoT and Sensor Networks
SCOPE AND MOTIVATION
With the promise of revolutionizing the way we live, work and
manufacture, it is no surprise why the Internet of Things (IoT) has picked
up the momentum in both industry and academia. Thanks to the increased
connectivity and the continued miniaturization of computers and smart
devices, IoT will generate huge volumes of data that will have to be
analyzed to uncover hidden patterns, correlations and other insights.
Moreover, in the industrial environments (Industry 4.0) as well in smart
spaces (building, houses, etc.) and connected cars communications will
require higher reliability, lower latency and scalability. Several
technologies such as BLE, Zigbee, WirelessHART, IEEE Std 802.15.4 TSCH,
6TiSCH, LPWAN (LoRa, Sigfox, NB-IoT, LTE-M etc.) RAW have been proposed to
tackle these requirements. The forthcoming 5G networks promise not only
increased data rates but also ultra-low data latency communication for
critical IoT applications that require extreme reliability. 5G will enable
Machine Type Communication (MTC) one of the most promising technologies for
IoT applications which is gaining a tremendous interest among mobile
network operators, equipment vendors, MTC specialist companies, and
research bodies. This anticipated high-traffic demands, low-latency and
deterministic delivery requirements stemming from IoT and
machine-to-machine (M2M) communications can be met only with radical
changes in terms of architecture and communication solutions. Recently,
Fog/Edge-to-thing continuum is proposed to mitigate the heavy burden on the
network due to the centralized processing and storing of the massive IoT
data. Fog/Edge-enabled IoT architectures ensure closer processing in
proximity to the things, which results in small, deterministic latency that
enables real-time applications and enforced security.
The IoT and Sensor Networks Symposiumat IEEE Globecom 2021 aims at a
forum that brings together scientists and researchers to present their
cutting-edge innovations in all aspects of the field. This track solicits

> Two Deadlines and Reviewing Process with One-shot Revision
>
> SEC’21 offers authors the options of two deadlines and adds a one-shot revision process to enhance the timeliness and quality of the scientific results from the research community. Each paper will go through the same rigorous reviewing process as in previous SEC conferences. The review decisions will be one of the following:
>
> * Accept: Papers in this category will be accepted for publication in the proceedings and presentation at the conference, possibly after making minor changes with the oversight of a shepherd.
> * One-Shot-Revision: A limited number of papers will be invited to submit a revision; such papers will receive a specific set of action points and can be resubmitted for the next deadline. After the resubmission, reviewers will evaluate the paper based on whether the authors have properly addressed the previous reviews. Unlike in the shepherding process, the requested action points may include running additional experiments that obtain specific results. During this revision period, the paper is still considered under review to SEC and therefore cannot be submitted to other conferences unless the authors first withdraw it from consideration. The revised paper will then be re-evaluated, and either accepted or rejected.
> * Reject: Papers in this category are declined for inclusion in the conference. Rejected papers must wait for one year, from the date of the original submission, to resubmit to SEC. A paper will be judged to be a resubmit (as opposed to a new submission) if the paper is from the same or similar authors, and a reviewer could write a substantially similar summary of the paper compared with the original submission. As a rule of thumb, if there is more than 40% overlap between the original submission and the new paper, it will be considered a resubmission.
>
> In case of any similarity between a current submission and a submission that has been previously rejected at SEC less than 11 months ago, please email a detailed list of differences and if possible, a copy of a previous submission to the chairs.
>
> Important Dates
> Deadline 1 (Passed)
> Deadline 2
> Abstract and title registration June 17, 2021
> Paper submission June 24, 2021
> Notification of acceptance September 3, 2021
> Camera ready October 15, 2021
>
>
> Submission Instructions
> Submitted papers must be no longer than 12 single-spaced 8.5" x 11" pages, including figures and tables, but excluding references, and using 10-point type on 11-point (single-spaced) leading, two-column format, Times Roman or a similar font, within a text block 6.5" wide x 9" deep. IEEE Standard template for Latex and Word meet these specifications and can be found at: https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html. Accepted papers will be allowed 2 additional pages in the proceedings. Papers not meeting these criteria will be rejected without review, and no deadline extensions will be granted for reformatting. Pages should be numbered, and figures and tables should be legible in black and white, without requiring magnification. Papers so short as to be considered "extended abstracts" will not receive full consideration.
>
> Reviewing will be double-blind. Authors must make a good faith effort to anonymize their submissions, and they should not identify themselves either explicitly or by implication; for example, cite prior work as though it belongs to a third party. Submissions violating the detailed formatting and anonymization rules will not be considered for review. If you are uncertain about how to anonymize your submission, please contact the program co-chairs well in advance of the submission deadline.
>
> Papers must be in PDF format and must be submitted via the Web submission form, which will be open in the weeks before the submission deadline.
>
> Position Papers
> The program committee is also soliciting industry and academic position papers that describe current advances and challenges in edge computing practice and academic research. Such papers should follow the above submission instructions, with the exception that they may be no longer than 6 single-spaced 8.5" x 11" pages. Furthermore, the title of the paper should include the words: "Position Paper: XXX", where XXX is the actual title of the paper.

Dear Colleagues,
apologies for cross-posting! Please consider contributing to and/or forward
to the appropriate groups the following opportunity to submit and publish
original scientific results to:
============================================================================================
MobileServerless 2021
the 1st Workshop on Serverless Mobile Networking for 6G Communications
co-located with ACM MobiSys 2021
============================================================================================
Spurred by a growing need for programmability and flexibility, serverless
computing is rapidly gaining the attention of mobile network stakeholders.
The introduction of serverless architectures, also known as Function as a
Service (FaaS), enables programmers to decompose network operations into
atomic building blocks. This new paradigm represents the natural evolution
of current cloud-native architectures, and a first glimpse into an actual
fluid resource control that breaks current quantization and reaches
ultimate flexibility. The advantages are evident and include: no service
management, boosted resource multiplexing, liquid scalability, and high
customization. The challenges to realizing a complete serverless approach
in mobile networks are however important: software needs to be re-developed
for this purpose, the scalability of routing traffic interconnecting
functions must be explored, and resource orchestration becomes daunting.
MobileServerless will facilitate discussions and novel contributions on the
emerging topic of serverless networking for future mobile communications.
MobileServerless welcomes both theoretical and more applied contributions,
tools and methodologies, works-in-progress, demos and experience papers.
Specific topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Application of cloud-native and serverless concept to network function
design
- Performance evaluation of cloud-native network deployment
- Simulation and theoretical evaluation of highly modular network
functions
- New software architectures for network function design
- Management and orchestration solutions for cloud-native network
functions
- Technical enablers for scalable packet forwarding in a cloud-native
environment
- Security and privacy in serverless environments.
We will have 2 renowned keynote speakers:
- Dr. Volker Hilt, who is a Bell Labs Fellow and senior director leading
the Autonomous Software Systems Research program at Nokia Bell Labs.
Volker's work is focused on distributed software systems where he has made
contributions in cloud computing, software operations, distributed
multimedia systems, content distribution networks, peer-to-peer
applications and the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). He has designed the
overload control mechanism for SIP, which has become a key part of today's
telecommunication systems. Volker received a Ph.D. in Computer Science in
2001 from the University of Mannheim in Germany. He joined Bell Labs in
Holmdel, NJ, USA in 2002 and moved to Stuttgart, Germany in 2012. Volker is
an IEEE senior member and has published over 100 papers, Internet drafts
and RFCs and holds over 30 patents.
- Dr. Paul Castro, who is a Research Staff Member and Manager at the IBM
Watson Research Center. He currently works on Hybrid Cloud Programming
Models and Systems with interests in Serverless computing models, cloud
platforms, and developer tooling for cloud-native development. He has been
active in research on mobile and pervasive computing, cloud infrastructure,
wireless location systems, location databases, stream processing, and
enterprise web applications and has been awarded several patents in these
areas. He has worked on cloud services for supporting mobile applications
running on various smartphone platforms. Work from his research in the area
of multi-device application support was recently released as part of the
IBM Bluemix Mobile Backend as a Service. He has earned two IBM Technical
Achievement Awards for the IBM SmartCloud Web Meetings for mobile clients
and the Intelligent Notification System. He worked extensively on
enterprise solutions work for the Apple+IBM partnership. He has also worked
on Apache OpenWhisk which powers IBM Cloud Functions.
