This field is thriving thanks to recent technological advances demonstrating the feasibility of decentralized systems at scale. Existing approaches include blockchain-based systems as well as systems like the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), a peer-to-peer, content-addressable hypermedia protocol that seeks to connect all computing devices within a single distributed system of files. IPFS is additionally complemented by Filecoin, a token-based protocol that supports an incentivized, decentralized storage and delivery network, among others. These projects are open-source and community-driven with reference implementations in multiple languages and a global community of millions of users. This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners in the fields of decentralized systems, peer-to-peer networks, and edge computing. Now is the time to leverage our expertise and discoveries in this area to define the future of the decentralized Internet: this includes work on underlying technologies and protocols, emerging standards, tools and abstractions (such as the ones provided by IPFS, libp2p and Filecoin), and also emerging applications and use-cases. The workshop will consist of a number of different sessions and session styles that go beyond the traditional presentation-centric workshop. We seek to foster interaction between participants with hands-on sessions that will give them first-hand knowledge of how to use IPFS and Filecoin and interact with these technologies, as well as ecosystem project platforms. A capstone competition will give attendees the chance to develop open-source applications and win prizes. WFCS is the largest IEEE conference that is especially dedicated to communication for (industrial) automation systems and aims to provide a forum for researchers, developers and practitioners to review and discuss recent trends in the area and share innovative research directions. The conference, supported by the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) and led by the Technical Committee on Factory Automation (TCFA), will be hosted by the University of Pavia (Italy) in collaboration with the Institute on Industrial IT (inIT) of the Technische Hochschule OWL in Lemgo, Germany. The advanced networking paradigms such as programmable and virtual networks, growth in communication technologies like 5G, and use of advanced computing infrastructure such as fog/edge/cloud computing can all contribute to the applications related to smart cities. With the penetration of Internet of things (IoT) devices in smart city applications, smart computing has become all the more relevant in terms of managing and processing the data. The applications in smart cities can be computing-intensive, network-intensive, disk-intensive, data-intensive etc. which requires different solution sets in order to effectively solve the issues pertaining to these applications. The computing and communication aspects in smart computing are of great relevance in the wider domain of smart cities which consists of smart metering, smart homes, smart building, smart industries, connected vehicles, and tackles various problems ranging from data reporting to providing smart services. Hence, the aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers working in the broad area of smart cities using smart computing. On the surface, the two technologies seem complementary. Information shared by different traffic entities can be added to a vehicle’s dynamic map, extending its perception horizon, and uncovering None-Line-Of-Sight situations which otherwise would not be available via its own onboard sensors. In return, the vehicle can send what it observes through onboard sensors, which might help recipients avoid previously unaware safety hazard. Furthermore, as reported in the state-of-art research, individual vehicles may navigate themselves more efficiently with global information gathered from others on the same road, generating improved driving safety and efficiency. However, the aforementioned complementary natures of vehicle connectivity and automation do not assure the completed integration of these technologies into vehicles and their interactions. There are questions about the cost, benefits, timeline, performance, hardware/software requirement and interface design of such an integrated system. Many of these questions are nontrivial to answer as it needs joint efforts from numerous technology areas. Fortunately, many scholars and research groups have started to explore these questions, paving the road for a cohesive integration of vehicle connectivity with vehicle automation system. This special issue focuses on the most recent advancements in modeling, wireless communications, vehicle perception, mapping and localization technologies, which can improve the collaboration among individual automated, human-driven, or autonomous vehicles and enable novel vehicular cooperative applications. For example, Industrial Internet applications, Augmented Reality, Tactile Internet require ultra-low latency measured in single-digit milliseconds and do not tolerate jitter at all. Economic pressures mandate increasingly cloudification of real-time applications with precision service level needs. Many of those applications are mission-critical and cannot afford any loss in connectivity or even single packets. Collectively, these applications require networking services that support high-precision and predictable service levels with associated guarantees that border on determinism. This requires a rethinking of many of the principles underlying existing "Best Effort" internetworking technology. Various approaches are emerging that try to tackle those challenges. Data centers with fixed topologies and a constant number of hops rapidly replace conventional routing and more general Internet topologies. Networks are becoming more programmable to allow to custom-tailor and optimize treatment of packets and flows. Related technologies range from Service Function Chaining to Network Slicing to SDN. While 5G is making URLLC at the network edge a reality, momentum for Beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G is building to push the boundaries of precision services beyond the edge and across the core. One overarching question concerns how these technologies can be harnessed and what additional approaches are needed to be able to actually deliver on high-precision networking with service levels that are predictable and that can be guaranteed. This will involve advances across all networking planes, including but not limited to approaches for the programming and processing of packets in the data plane, evolved control interfaces and ultra-low latency control loops to optimize service levels in the control-plane, methods for high-precision measurements and telemetry with nanosecond accuracy at scale, as well as advances in the related platforms and algorithms in the management plane. This special issue focuses on challenges and solution approaches to deliver, manage, control, monitor, and measure high-precision network services that provide applications with predictable service levels that can be guaranteed. This includes (Ultra) Low-Latency networks, deterministic networks, 6G, etc. The special issue specifically encourages submission of papers that describe disruptive concepts, innovative solutions, testbeds, experiments, in addition to more evolutionary approaches. Topics traditionally of interest include, but are not limited to: * All aspects of network protocol research including design, specification, verification, implementation, measurement, testing, and analysis. * Protocols for cellular networks, data center networks, Internet of Things, sensor networks, social networks, software-defined networks, vehicular networks, wide area networks, and wireless networks. * Domain-specific solutions, including protocols for network security, routing, user privacy, and network management. * Network protocols meet AI/ML, e.g., application of AI/Machine Learning to improve network protocols and operations; networking and protocols for improving the performance of AI/Machine Learning systems. * Contributions to network architecture, e.g., algorithms and protocols for network virtualization or future Internet architectures. * Contributions to other areas of data communications to the extent that they articulate a strong connection to network protocols, for example by discussing potential implications on the design or performance of certain types of network protocols (e.g., those for supporting large-scale networked scientific computation applications). Authors who are unsure whether or not their submissions might fit the scope of the conference are welcome to contact the Program Committee Co-Chairs. Paper Formatting Paper submissions should adhere to the IEEE Conference formatting requirements using the templates available here<https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html>, and should not exceed 10 pages excluding references. It is the authors' responsibility to produce readable submissions that comply with the formatting constraints. Violating the formatting requirements to squeeze in additional materials will result in a submission being returned without being reviewed. Submission and Anonymity Policy Papers submitted to the conference will be reviewed through a double-blind review process, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers (and that of the reviewers from the authors). Achieving this goal requires some care to, on the one hand, preserve the anonymity of your submission, and on the other hand ensuring proper coverage of related past work, including your own. While this requirement may seem challenging, the few basic steps listed below will go a long way towards achieving the desired outcome: Remove all authors' identifiers, e.g., names, emails, and affiliations, from the title page. Remove acknowledgments of and identifiers of funding sources. Use anonymous names for your files, as source file names are often embedded in the final output you generate, and therefore accessible as comments. When referring to your own related work, refer to it in the third person as you would with any other related work by another author. Besides anonymizing your submission, double-blind reviewing also imposes additional requirements on both authors and reviewers. Specifically, while it is permissible for authors to give local talks on their work and release their paper on a non-peer-reviewed location, e.g., an institutional repository or even arXiv, care should be exercised to limit public exposure as much as possible. This requirement includes refraining from advertising the work on mailing lists and public forums, and in general limiting as much as possible the odds that program committee members be exposed to the work and the authors' identity. Conversely, program committee members will be advised to neither actively seek to "reverse engineer" the acquired. All questions authors' identity, nor to directly share with other program committee members any such information they may have regarding possible breaches of the anonymity covenant that underlies the double-blind review process will be adjudicated by the Program Committee Co-Chairs. All papers will be provisionally accepted and the final acceptance of any paper may be subject to shepherding by a member of the program committee. Submission and Plagiarism Policy Papers must present original contributions and can neither be previously published nor under review by another conference or journal. Papers containing plagiarized materials will be subject to the IEEE plagiarism policy and possible penalties and will be rejected without being reviewed. Best Paper Award and Fast-Track Journal Publication One of the accepted papers will be selected for the Best Paper award, and will be fast tracked to the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, with a streamlined journal review process. Presentation and Registration Requirements IEEE ICNP requires that at least one of the authors of any accepted paper must register for the conference at the full rate and be available to present the paper at the conference. While we anticipate ICNP 2022 will be held physically in-person in Lexington, KY, USA, in the unlikely event that the conference is held virtually or partially virtually due to health considerations, we will accommodate requests by authors to present papers remotely, without physical attendance, and subsequently to include the paper in the conference proceedings and in IEEE Xplore. However, any paper that is not presented by an author of the paper, either in-person or remotely, will be withdrawn from the proceedings and thus from IEEE Xplore. This research has led to the development of smart systems at different scales and environments, from smart homes and cities to smart grids and factories. Significant progress has been made through contributions in areas as diverse as control, embedded and real-time systems, wireless communication, and networking. Despite these advances, a lack of standard evaluation criteria and methodologies makes it difficult to measure and compare the utility of this progress. This problem concerns the evaluation against the state of the art in an individual area, the comparability of different integrated designs that span multiple areas (e.g., control and networking), and the applicability of tested scenarios to present and future real-world CPS/IoT applications and deployments. This state of affairs is alarming, as it significantly hinders further progress in CPS and IoT research. The Workshop on Benchmarking Cyber-Physical Systems and Internet of Things (CPS-IoTBench) has been a forum to bring together researchers from different communities since 2018, to engage in a lively debate on all facets of rigorously evaluating and comparing CPS and IoT solutions. This year, we will have a special session on the benchmarking and reproducibility of AI and machine learning techniques in CPS and IoT systems. CPS-IoTBench provides a venue for learning about each other’s challenges and evaluation methodologies and for debating future research agendas to jointly define the performance metrics and benchmarking scenarios that matter from an overall system perspective. *** Call for Papers and for Reproducibility Studies *** For the workshop's 5th edition, which will take place in a virtual form within CPS-IoT Week, we invite researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to submit papers that focus on one of the following: - Presenting exemplary benchmarking systems and approaches from any of the relevant communities (e.g., embedded systems, real-time systems, networking, wireless communication and control, robotics, machine learning). - Exposing key issues (or support current practice!) on the application and reproducibility of AI and machine learning techniques in CPS and IoT systems. - Identifying fundamental challenges and open questions in rigorous benchmarking and evaluation of CPS and IoT solutions. - Offering a constructive critique on the current practices and state of experimental comparisons. - Designing and evaluating benchmarking methodologies, infrastructures, or tools for cyber-physical and IoT systems. - Benchmarking industrial standardized solutions against each other and against academic solutions. - Presenting novel performance comparisons in the context of cyber-physical and IoT systems. - Reporting on success stories or failures when using standard evaluation criteria. - Describing techniques for improving the reproducibility of real-world testing of wireless systems. - Proposing new research directions, methodologies, or tools to increase the level of reproducibility and comparability of evaluation results. Well-reasoned arguments or preliminary evaluations are sufficient to support a paper’s claims. Unique to this year's workshop edition, we also seek contributions describing the reproduction of experimental results from published work within any of the relevant communities. Examples of this include: - Papers that repeat prior experiments (ideally using the original source code) to show how, why, and when the methods work (or not). - Papers that repeat prior experiments in new contexts (e.g., different application domains or using different evaluation methodologies and metrics) to further generalize and validate (or not) previous work. - Reproducibility studies of a given scientific work for which some key aspect(s) in the experimental setup was unspecified, showing the different spectrum of solutions as a function of such aspect(s). - Evaluations carried out by undergraduate and graduate students, experienced researchers, or industry practitioners looking to validate another piece of work before comparing their own to it. Reports should carefully describe the experimental setup as well as how the authors made sure to carefully reproduce conditions similar to those of the original study. If there are ambiguous conditions not specified in the original study which may affect the outcome (e.g. it is not specified whether the environment is an empty room or full of people), authors are encouraged to highlight, discuss, and empirically explore the impact of changing such a condition. Regardless of the study results, the tone of the report must be constructive and not offensive to the original authors. Prospective authors are invited to contact the original authors of the examined study and let them provide a short discussion paragraph that can be included in the final section within the report. Submissions from the same authors of the reproduced experiments will not be accepted. *** Submission Instructions *** Submitted papers must contain at most 6 pages (US letter, 9pt font size, double-column format, following the IEEE conference proceedings template), including all figures, tables, and references.
