Many environments where IoT systems are particularly valuable face stresses due to poor/aging physical infrastructure, high demand, and increasingly extreme operating conditions, largely driven by climate change. Depending on the geographical location, the extreme events may include extreme temperature, winds, flooding, snow squalls, etc. that may adversely affect the functioning of portions of the infrastructure and the IoT systems hosted by them on a routine basis. This is particularly true for the poor/aging physical infrastructure all around the world. The robustness/resilience scenarios of interest in this environment are ones that are usually neither catastrophic nor random but may suffer from varying degrees of area damage relatively frequently. Thus, the key challenge is to assess damage effectively and with minimal manual involvement and accordingly configure or augment the system before, during, and after the event to minimize service degradation, maximize coverage, and optimize the services offered. Furthermore, all these aspects must account for many real-world aspects such as extreme heterogeneity in population and wealth distribution and associated demographic, socio-economic, and business considerations. Also, using IoT technologies, UAVs may autonomously perform remote sensing relaying either the raw data by the sensors, or an aggregated view using edge computing to reduce latency and communication overhead. Additionally, one or more UAVs can collaborate to provide services that require efficient protocols where multiple objectives and constraints need to be considered. Moreover, with the rising concern of global warming, care should be taken to make these emerging applications green, sustainable and eco-friendly. This workshop will consider the research works which combine the design of algorithms and testbed implementations to develop the theoretical foundations for UAVs as well as the synergies with IoT devices. Huge investments have been made in this field - consider for instance satellite constellations for remote sensing, the thriving UAV sector, and the dawning sector of terrestrial rovers - and benefits are evident in several application areas. The other side of the coin is represented by the data platforms used to collect, store, and process the huge amount of data coming from sensing platforms. Such data platforms have, among others, the role to provide interoperable data through open interfaces to several different classes of users. The goal of this special session is to investigate the potential and the challenges of both sensing and data platforms, looking to future developments, and also considering economic and legal aspects to be carefully taken into consideration. Contributions are expected to deal with, but are not limited to, the following topics: - Sensing systems, both local and remote, and recent developments - State of the art of data platforms linked to sensing systems - GEOSS Data Sharing and Management Principles, FAIR principles, and other interoperable solutions with the potential to further push the use of sensing data - Economic and legal aspects that can fuel or limit the use of such systems Important dates - Extended Abstract Submission: June 15, 2023 - Extended Abstract Notification: July 30, 2023 - Final Paper Submission: September 15, 2023 Submission Instruction Authors should prepare an Extended Abstract (4-5 pages) that clearly indicates the originality of the contribution and the relevance of the work. The Extended Abstract should include the title of the paper, names and affiliations of the authors, an abstract, keywords, an introduction describing the nature of the problem and the state of the art in the field of interest, a description of the contribution, the results achieved and their applicability, conclusions, and references. When the review process has been completed, authors receive a notification of either acceptance or rejection of the submission. If the paper has been accepted, the authors can prepare a final paper that incorporates the reviewers' suggestions. The format for the final paper is identical to the format for the extended abstract except for the number of pages: the full paper has a required minimum length of five (5) pages and a maximum of six (6) pages. The purpose of a conference template is to provide a consistent format for papers appearing in the conference proceedings. IEEE strongly encourages use of the conference manuscript templates. IEEE conference templates contain guidance text for composing and formatting conference papers. Please ensure that all guidance text is removed from your conference paper prior to submission to the conference. Failure to remove template text from your paper may result in your paper not being published.
