Dear Researchers/Authors,
You are invited to submit your high-quality research findings to the
Special Session 11: "Sensing and Data Platforms: what is ahead of us" of
the 2024 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and
Forestry (MetroAgriFor).
October 29-31, 2024 - Padua, Italy
Website: https://www.metroagrifor.org/special-session-11
Aims and Scope
The role of sensing, including in-situ, proximity and remote, is
increasingly crucial for agriculture and forestry.
Huge investments have been made in this field - consider for instance
satellite constellations for remote sensing, the thriving UAV sector, and
the dawning sector of terrestrial rovers - and benefits are evident in
several application areas.
The other side of the coin is represented by the data platforms used to
collect, store, and process the huge amount of data coming from sensing
platforms.
Such data platforms should, among others, provide interoperable data
through open interfaces (APIs) to different classes of users, but such
functionality has not yet reached its full potential.
In Europe, there have been several recent initiatives focused on enhancing
data sharing and processing.
One key effort is the European Strategy for Data, which introduces the
concept of a Common European Data Space and includes actions to deploy
Agriculture and Green Deal sectorial data spaces.
Additionally, the Horizon Europe framework is providing funding for the
establishment of European Partnerships that bring together the European
Commission with private and/or public partners to address pressing
challenges through collaborative research and innovation projects.
One such partnership, the European Partnership for Agriculture of Data,
aims to support sustainable agriculture in the EU and improve policy
monitoring and implementation by leveraging digital and data technologies
for environmental observation.
The goal of this special session is to investigate the potential and the
challenges of both sensing and data platforms, looking to future
developments, and also considering economic and legal aspects to be
carefully taken into consideration.
Contributions are expected to contribute to, but are not limited to, the
following topics:
- sensing systems, both local and remote, and recent developments;
- state of the art of data platforms linked to sensing systems, standards,
interoperability enablers, and sustainability of their business model;
- GEOSS Data Sharing and Management Principles, FAIR principles, and other
interoperable solutions with the potential to further push the use of
sensing data;
- economic and legal aspects that can fuel or limit the use of such systems.

Special Track on ''Avoiding an Internet of Trash''
@ ACM GoodIT'24, September 4-6, 2024, Bremen, Germany
https://blogs.uni-bremen.de/goodit2024/special-tracks/
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** CALL FOR PAPERS ***
The 4th ACM International Conference on Information Technology for Social
Good (GoodIT 2024) is a premier international forum for researchers,
practitioners, and educators to present and discuss the most recent
innovations, trends and concerns, as well as practical challenges
encountered and solutions adopted in the fields of data and technology for
addressing Social Good and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Within the
context of the conference, we are organizing a special track ''Avoiding an
Internet of Trash'', focused on a sustainable Internet of Things. We are
witnessing an ever-increasing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices
with predictions of between 50 and 125 billion IoT devices by 2030. There
is currently no information about how long these devices will be used. If
one goes by the lifetime of smartphones or laptops, this could be in the
order of 4 to 6 years. Without any action, this situation could produce a
large amount of electronic waste. Many factors contribute to this
situation, including issues of planned obsolescence of devices, software
maintenance, volatile businesses, poor battery capacity, and unnecessary
gadgets. This challenge is further compounded by the fact that there is
often limited interoperability between devices and little reuse as well as
limited recycling of unused IoT devices. This special track aims at
creating a forum for discussion on how to address all these issues. We
welcome submissions on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Sustainable powering of IoT devices and energy harvesting;
- Sustainable electronics for IoT devices;
- Methods and frameworks for reprogramming of IoT devices;
- Modular and reconfigurable IoT device architectures;
- Interoperability of IoT devices, protocols, and frameworks;
- Environmental impact of IoT devices;
- Sustainable deployment of IoT applications;
- Analysis of the usefulness of IoT devices and applications;
- IoT applications for sustainability;
- Behavioural and societal aspects in the sustainable use of IoT devices
and resources.
*** SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ***
Papers submitted to this special track must be unpublished original works.
Submitted papers must satisfy the same criteria in terms of paper length
and formatting requirements as papers submitted to the main conference
(more details are provided at
https://blogs.uni-bremen.de/goodit2024/submission-of-papers/). Accepted
papers must follow the formatting instructions of the main conference. At
least one of the authors of all accepted papers must register and present
the work at the conference on site; otherwise, the paper will not be
published in the proceedings. All accepted and presented papers will be

Authors can keep their names on their submitted paper, i.e., submissions
are not required to be double blind. Authors can also prepare technical
reports that are made available on their own websites and on purely
archiving organizations such as arXiv.org. However, all submissions must
comply with the dual submission policy. Each paper has a chance to submit a
one-page rebuttal for the reviews. All submitted papers will be considered
for a Best Paper Award. A selected set of papers will be chosen for
fast-tracked publication in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. Papers are
expected to be direct and specific about their results, contributions, and
context.

CALL FOR PAPERS
First Workshop on
"Digital Twin Modelling, Orchestration and Development in the 6G era"
in conjunction with IEEE MeditCom, 8-11 July 2024, Madrid, Spain
*** Submission deadline: 5 April 2024 ***
https://meditcom2024.ieee-meditcom.org/workshop/ws-03-digital-twin-modellin…
<https://meditcom2024.ieee-meditcom.org/workshop/ws-03-digital-twin-modellin…>
===================================================
*** Scope ***
To effectively support future 6G applications, the research community is
promoting the Digital Twin (DT) technology. By creating the virtual
representation of the elements, dynamics and services of physical systems,
including objects and humans, DTs are expected to provide crucial support
to the ambitious Sixth-generation (6G) applications, like Extended Reality
(XR), autonomous driving and remote healthcare.
However, to provide such composite and complex applications, the research
community on DTs have to face major research challenges, such as the
definition of expressive DT representation models to manage the DTs’
dynamic nature and the design of scalable autonomous search engine among a
huge number of DTs, with intensive interactions, heterogeneous
communications, and billions of services.
Moreover, based on the distinct requirements of the applications, different
orchestration and deployment mechanisms can be envisioned.
DTs are typically hosted in remote Cloud data centers to provide
compute-intensive services but they can also migrate at the network edge to
provide ultra-low-latency services and quickly interact with their real
counterpart. In this context, it becomes crucial to provide optimal DT
service placement in the presence of multiple edge nodes with distinct
computation and storage capabilities and investigate caching policies to
reuse the available DT services that can be offered to distinct clients.
So far, the literature has mainly focused on application-specific solutions
for DTs, e.g., in the manufacturing field, but new holistic approaches can
be devised in 6G environments. For example, revolutionary networking
paradigms, like the Social Internet of Things (SIoT), can foster
trustworthy and effective DT service discovery; service-centric
communications, implemented by Information-Centric Networking (ICN)
architectures, can facilitate the orchestration of DT at the edge and their
service reuse.

Edge computing platforms for DT
Edge-Cloud DT orchestration
Social network solutions for DT
Information-Centric Networking (ICN) for DT
