Embedded systems have become pervasive in modern society, from managing the
power grids that allow you to boil the kettle in the morning to monitoring
your sleep patterns at night. They play a crucial role in facilitating
communication, enabling access to information, and powering the unseen
minutiae of everyday life. Securing these networks and devices is of utmost
importance to ensure the safety and privacy of individuals, businesses, and
governments.
However, despite significant recent progress recognizing the need for
security in such systems, it is often still an afterthought. Furthermore,
emerging communication technologies such as 6G, cloud computing, and the
inexorable rise of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning present new
security threats and privacy issues that require innovative solutions.
Moreover, unconventional threats and vulnerabilities can circumvent
established security and privacy dogmas, exposing key weaknesses in
critical systems.
The Workshop on Security and Privacy in Connected Embedded Systems (SPICES)
aims to address these challenges and foster interdisciplinary collaboration
to explore innovative solutions for securing wireless and embedded systems.
The workshop provides a platform for researchers, practitioners, and
industry experts to discuss the latest topics and challenges in wireless
and embedded systems security and privacy – not only on how existing
systems shouldbe secured but also exploring important security aspects (or
lack of) in current research trends. We welcome submissions with unusual
takes on existing techniques, proposals for novel security and privacy
solutions, exposure of atypical weaknesses, and the application of
unconventional approaches to solving next-generation wireless security
challenges.

papers will be invited to submit an extended version to those journals.
## MOTIVATION AND RATIONALE
Social good has a big impact on society. Indeed, the term “social good”
refers to something which benefits the general public, and at the same
time, it is something which reflects and respects their wishes, being
‘from’ the people. The social good can be envisioned as global citizens
uniting to unlock the potential of individuals through collaboration to
create a positive societal impact. Much interest has been produced in the
last years, and new proposals and technologies have been considered. Among
them, Blockchain, distributed ledger technologies, and decentralized
technologies in general, such as IPFS, have been considered to improve all
the aspects of the social good. Blockchain and decentralized technologies
have had a big impact on the world. In particular, Blockchain technology
has been applied to several fields, such as e-health, IoT, media, etc. The
big question around the definition of this track is: “How does the
blockchain have a big impact on the social good? And how can
decentralization improve the ICT industries?”. The track manages the
possible application of decentralized technologies in research fields
included in the global scope of the social good. These address sectors such
as agriculture, supply chain traceability, energy, health, property rights
and digital identities, ranging from a global to a local scope. More
recently in the realm of civic participation, civil society initiatives and
social economies, blockchains are being tested to implement collaborative
models: social finance and local currency schemes, peer-to-peer production
and exchanges, decentralized organizations management and decision-making,
purpose-driven tokens that incentivize pro-social behaviors, etc.
Examples of applications involving considerable experimentation and
innovation are complementary and community currency systems. These systems
aim to support humanitarian aid initiatives, self-organizing local
community development and basic income projects. These involve novel
tokenization mechanisms based on smart contracts that necessitate further
investigation and discussion. While the revolutionary potential of
blockchains has been largely tested (in the financial domain in
particular), its possible applications in social domains and to address
sustainability challenges have been explored far less.
This special track aims to explore and debate the main concepts and
implications of blockchain technology, how it can be a driver of innovation
and its positive effects on our societies, industry, legal systems and
economic/financial systems. Also, the risks and uncertainties that
blockchain arrows are welcome to be debated in this section, as regards:
conflicts arising from the introduction, in mutable social interactions, of
logics based on tokenization, automation, and trustlessness; energy
consumption and environmental impacts; technical accessibility and digital
skill divides. This special track will provide both academic and industry
researchers with a forum to discuss the impact, future, and limitations of
blockchain technology regarding its effect across specific industries,
economics, finance, law, civil society initiatives, social economies, the
not-for-profit sector, etc.

Apologies for cross-posting.
Call for Papers
*SITE 2024*
The 1st Workshop on Systems and Technologies for IT/OT IntegraTion
in Industry 4/5.0 Environments (SITE 2024)
Co-located with *IEEE CAMAD 2024*
October 21-23, 2024 – Athens, Greece
On-site event
website: https://site2024.spilab.es/
*Technically co-sponsored by IEEE & IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc)*
Recently, the Industry 4.0 revolution claims the need for a paradigm shift
consisting of a massive adoption of Information and Communication
Technologies by all factory departments (from business to production
lines), to transform production and product delivery processes radically.
I4.0 fosters a deep change in the rigid organization model of the factory.
The multiple implications of the “connected factory" concept will lead the
production environments to unexpected developments, impacting both OT and
IT layers. Connected and interacting objects will populate the factories of
the future.
In the prospected landscape, a progressive and decisive integration of the
IT and OT layers is expected to occur, which practitioners are used to
refer to as IT/OT convergence, stressing the shortening of the gap (both
physical and conceptual) between the manufacturing processes running at the
OT layer, and storage, networking, computing resources, and
business-oriented software suites populating the IT layer.
In this context, emergent paradigms, approaches, and technologies like
artificial intelligence (AI), privacy-enhancing technologies (PET),
cybersecurity, blockchain (BC), Cloud Continuum, Zero Defect Manufacturing
(ZDM), Zero Waste Manufacturing, Industrial Sustainability, IIoT Platforms,
Advanced Service Orchestration in industrial deployments, 5G/6G
communication, Digital Twins (DT), and metaverse are key enablers shaping
the development of an IT/OT convergent smart factory.
The focus of SITE is on the convergence of IT and OT layers within the
modern Industry 4/5.0 compliant factories, and the systems and technologies
that ease or enable this revolutionary integration.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Application of Industrial Cloud Continuum.
- IIoT Platforms and Service Orchestration.
- 5G/6G communication for industrial deployments.
- Computing continuum for smart cities services.
- Digital Twins for industrial process or product monitoring.
