The 1st IFIP TC6 WG6.6
Workshop on Autonomic Communication (WAC 2004)
Autonomic Communication Principles
18-19 October 2004 in Berlin, Germany
http://www.autonomic-communication.org/wac/
Call For Papers
Scope
The purpose of this workshop is to present and to discuss the principles
of Autonomic Communication (AC) - a new communication paradigm to assist
the design of the Next Generation Networks (NGN). This workshop explicitly
focuses on the grounding principles to achieve purposeful behavior on
top of self-organization (self-management, self-healing, self-awareness,
etc.).
Papers are solicited that study network element's autonomic behavior
exposed by innovative (cross-layer optimized, context-aware, and securely
programmable) protocol stack in its interaction with numerous often-dynamic
network groups and communities. The goals are to understand how autonomic
behaviors are learned, influenced or changed, and how, in turn,
these affect other elements, groups and the network.
The self-organized Internet will be able to sense its environment, to perceive
these changes and to understand the meaning of these changes, thus
facilitating new ways to perform network control, management, middle box
communication, service creation, etc. This will be based on universal and
fine-grained multiplexing of numerous policies, rules and events which are
done autonomously but facilitate desired behavior of groups of network
elements.
Though the primary application domain is the Internet, papers addressing
autonomic communication principles for mission critical distributed systems
are also welcome.
The emphasis of the event is on long-term research agenda with broad
interdisciplinary approach to explore concurrently multiple paradigm spaces.
Along with invited papers and a panel the conference will offer possibility
for technical papers and position statements.
Papers are solicited on at least the following topics:
* Policy-based communication and policy multiplexing in NGN
* Group communication for control and management plane
* Designing evolvable next generation networks
* Self-organisation for NGN re-configurability
* Management of nomadicity
* Large AC testbeds
* AC calculi
* Modelling and analysis of AC systems
* Theoretical foundations of autonomic network control
* Mobile code and network programmability for AC
* Generic network-level service composition at run-time
* Context handling within AC
* Theoretical foundations of rule-based systems;
* Security, immunity and resilience of AC
* Applied AC (QoS, traffic engineering, routing, etc.);
WAC 2004 is technically co-sponsored by IFIP TC6 WG6.6 and will be organized
by the FP6 project "Autonomic Communication: Coordination Action" of Future
and Emerging Technologies program of the IST.
Communication Paradigms for 2020
IST Program Future and Emerging Technologies plans to launch a long-term
research (proactive initiative) in the area of novel communication paradigms;
it will address high-level visionary and risky research of fundamental nature
and shall explore its limits and opportunities in increasingly important
areas of economical and social development in Europe. Autonomic Communication
addresses these challenges from a network-centric technological viewpoint to
enable true ambient intelligence and I-centric communication scenarios.
Information for Authors
Submissions will be subject to at least three peer reviews and should describe
original work (not submitted or published elsewhere) and be 12 single-spaced
pages or less in length. Submissions should include: title, authors,
affiliations, 100-word abstract, and list of keywords. The author responsible
for correspondence should be identified, including the author's name, position,

ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
================================
Call for Papers for the
Second International Conference on
WIRELESS ON DEMAND NETWORKS SYSTEMS AND SERVICES
(WONS 2005)
http://www.wonss.org/
in St. Moritz, Switzerland
January 19-21, 2005
sponsored by IFIP WG 6.3 and 6.8
Wireless networks, be it Wi-Fi access, mobile ad hoc as well
as sensor networks, aim at providing ubiquitous connectivity
and network centric services to the masses and to massively
networked systems. An important attribute of such networks is
that they can be deployed "on demand" with minimal planning
and management effort as well as with little dependency on
existing network infrastructures. Concepts like ambient
intelligence and disappearing computers that are part of a
global and fully self-organized Internet hint at the scope
of this vision, but also at the formidable challenges that
come with it.
For this conference we request submissions of high quality
research papers on "wireless on demand networks" that provide
novel insights on protocol and network design, modelling and
performance evaluation, pricing and profitability models, QoS
models, practical implementations, service level aspects and
Internet integration of wireless networks.
Topics related to wireless ad hoc networks and sensor networks
comprise, but are not limited to:
o Architecture and Design
o Analysis through simulation and experimental evaluation
o Internet integration
o Social and economic aspects
o Pervasive / ubiquitous computing
o Localization and mobility management
o Security
o Energy-efficient protocols and power management
o Applications and Service Support
o Data dissemination and peer2peer systems
PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION
================================
Submitted papers must not have been published elsewhere nor
currently be under review by another conference or journal.
For paper submission, a web page with detailed information
will be activated in few days.
All papers will be reviewed by the program committee.
Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings.
Proceedings are planned to be published by IEEE
COMputer SOCiety and will be accessible through IEEE Xplore.
Authors of selected papers will be invited to submit extended
version of their papers for possible publication in
special issues of international journals and magazines.
IMPORTANT DEADLINES
===================
- August 2nd, 2004: Submission deadline (hard)
- September 29, 2004: Acceptance notification
- October 18, 2004: Final version due
VENUE
=====
The meeting will take place in the famous winter resort of
St. Moritz, in Switzerland. This place is synonymous with
quality and elegance. The magnificent landscape of the Swiss
alps and the fascinating culture of the Engadine valley
provide an inspiring background for this conference.
The schedule of the meeting will consist of presentations in
the morning and in the afternoon/evening. A pause after lunch
will allow social activities and informal interaction among
the participants.

CALL FOR PAPERS
System Support for Ubiquitous Computing Workshop (UbiSys 2004)
at the Sixth Annual Conference on Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp 2004)
Nottingham, England
http://ubisys.cs.uiuc.edu
---------------------------------------------------------------------
This workshop offers the opportunity to bring together researchers
and practitioners involved in the development of systems support for
general purpose ubiquitous computing environments. It provides
a forum for exploring most recent research and findings in this area,
comparing results, exchanging experiences, and promoting
collaboration and cooperation among researchers in the field. The
workshop aims at identifying the common abstractions and patterns
found in the existing systems, as well as the core low-level services
that are needed to build general-purpose ubiquitous computing
environments. The workshop focuses on different aspects of system
and middleware research and the challenges involved when applying
them to support ubiquitous computing.
Topics:
-------
The workshop focuses on presenting state of the art and emerging
research, as well as experience reports, in the following topics:
* System support infrastructures and services
* Middleware for ubiquitous computing
* Architectural structure, design decisions and philosophies
* Interoperability and wide scale deployment
Submission Guidelines:
----------------------
Paper submissions must be 5-8 pages long in LNCS format and have to
cover one of the topics listed above. Furthermore, we will prioritize
experience papers describing lessons learnt from built systems,
including information about approaches that did and did not work,
unexpected results, common abstractions, abstraction mapping among
different systems, common building blocks present in different
architectures, and metrics for evaluating ubiquitous computing
infrastructures.
Submissions must be blinded for peer review (no author names and
affiliations and no obvious references). Blinded submissions, in PDF
format, must be emailed to ubisys(a)cs.uiuc.edu no later than July 26,

Theme:
Future wireless networks will generally be characterized by
heterogeneity in architecture, protocols and air interfaces. The
wireless networking scene is dominated by two distinct networking
platforms: (a) cellular networks, which passed through multiple
generations -1G, 2G and 3G, and (b) Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs)
championed by the IEEE 802.11 networks. Recent trends indicate that 3G
networks and WLANs will co-exist to offer public wireless broadband
services to end users. The two platforms offer characteristics that
complement each other perfectly.
The 3G cellular systems such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications
System (UMTS) and Code Division Multiple Access (cdma2000) will support
real-time and non-real-time multimedia services with data rates from 144
kb/s to 2 Mb/s with wide coverage and nearly universal roaming. However,
the costs of acquiring the necessary radio spectrum and the required
network equipment upgrades are very high. This is in contrast to WLAN
systems such as IEEE 802.11 a/b/g, which provide affordable services and
bit rates surpassing those of 3G systems, up to 11 Mb/s with 802.11b and
54 Mb/s with 802.11a/g. However, the coverage offered by WLANs is quit
limited and lacks roaming support.
The complementary characteristics of 3G cellular systems (slow, wide
coverage) and WLAN (fast, limited coverage) make it attractive to
integrate these two technologies to provide ubiquitous wireless access.
The purpose of integrating 3G systems and WLANs is to make it possible
to use the best parts of both systems. High bandwidth WLANs are used for
data transfer where available and 3G systems can be used where WLAN
coverage is lacking. Development and standardization efforts are
currently underway for defining suitable architectures for 3G/WLAN
integration. However, designing a network architecture that efficiently
integrates 3G systems and WLAN is a challenge task that needs a lot of
research efforts.
In this special issue, we intend to publish a collection of high quality
papers by world leading researchers that present state-of-the-art
research in the area of 3G/WLAN integration.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
1. Mobility management
2. Seamless vertical handoff techniques between 3G and WLAN
3. Location management techniques
4. Architecture design scenarios for integrating 3G and WLAN systems
5. Network selection criteria
6. Bandwidth adaptation
7. Consistent quality of service across 3G and WLAN
8. Adaptive quality of service provisioning
9. Performance evaluation studies
10. Pricing and Billing Issues
11. Standardization activities
