=======================================================
2nd Intl WORKSHOP ON REAL-TIME LANS IN THE INTERNET AGE
=======================================================
Polytechnic Institute of Porto, Portugal
July 1, 2003
http://www.hurray.isep.ipp.pt/rtlia2003/
in conjunction with the
15th Euromicro Intl Conference on Real-Time Systems
Porto, Portugal
July 2-4, 2003
http://www.hurray.isep.ipp.pt/ecrts03/
The Euromicro Technical Committee on Real-Time Systems organises a number of
satellite events attached to its 15th International Real-Time Systems
Conference.
After the enormous success of last year's edition
(http://www.hurray.isep.ipp.pt/rtlia2002/), we are proud to announce the 2nd
International Workshop on Real-Time LANs in the Internet Age (RTLIA03).
One of the main technological challenges today is on developing
communication infrastructures that are real-time, reliable, pervasive,
interoperable and capable of accommodating the requirements imposed by new
applications and services.
There are several research directions. For instance, Networked Embedded
Systems pose a number of new challenging issues in terms of real-time,
robustness, flexibility and dependability.
The rapid development of new work methods and collaborative work
environments has also determined an increasing request for interoperable
mobile, wireless technologies and the convergence of fixed and mobile
communication infrastructures.
Future computer systems will be intimately tied to real-time computing and
to communication technologies. Ubiquitous computing networks combining
sensors and actuators with computing and communication systems will be used
to mitigate the impact of a given disaster on people and their environments.
These networks will support the exchange of sensitive real-time information
to be used for intelligent assistance to decision-making, rapid planning,
resource allocation, incident command response, first-aid.
In Factory Communication Systems, existing solutions will be improved in
order to comply with the need of providing not only real-time guarantees to
control traffic but also adequate bandwidth to multimedia traffic in a
flexible way. New frontiers for real-time Ethernet, in terms of both
technological challenges and application areas (e.g. mission critical
systems), are going to be investigated.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together people from industry and
academia that are interested in all aspects of using commodity LAN
technologies to support real-time and dependable applications in the
Internet Era. The workshop will provide a relaxed forum to present and
discuss new ideas, new research directions and to review current trends in
this area. The workshop will be based on short presentations that should
encourage discussion by the attendees.
Prospective authors are encouraged to address real-time, QoS and
dependability issues of the following topics:
- LAN Technologies: industrial Ethernet, fieldbus networks, Myrinet, etc.
- Control methods for communication over LAN networks
- Wireless sensor networks
- IPV6 networking
- Wired or wireless communication in intelligent buildings
- Ubiquitous computing for disaster response, mitigation and recovery
- Interoperability between LANs and PANs and between LANs and WANs
- Interoperability between hybrid wired/wireless networks
- Communication Technologies for e-Activities: e-health, e- monitoring.etc.
- Support of IP-based applications
- Multimedia communication
- Networked embedded systems
- Evaluation and case studies
- Tools
- Industry experience reports
Statements which are innovative, controversial or that present new
approaches are specially sought.
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS: People who would like to participate in this event are

Call for Papers: Deadline March 10, 2003
Wireless, Vehicular and Mobile Commerce: A Symposium at IEEE Vehicular
Technology Conference (www.vtc2003.org) October 4-9, 2003
Orlando, FL, USA
Motivation and Scope
With the emergence and wide spread adoption of wireless and mobile
networks, devices, and middleware, mobile commerce applications are
beginning to receive some interest in research and development community.
According to estimates by Gartner Group, in 2004, at least 40% of
consumer-to-business e-commerce will be initiated from smart phones.
A study from the Wireless Data and Computing Service, a division of
Strategy Analytics, reports that the worldwide mobile commerce market
may rise to $200 Billion by 2004. The report predicts that transactions
via wireless devices will generate about $14 Billion a year. In many
European countries and Japan with significant wireless penetration,
the mobile commerce market is already taking off and reaching billions
of dollars a year.
It is to be noted that mobile commerce may require significantly different
approaches in design, development, and implementation of applications
due to the inherent characteristics of wireless networks and mobile devices.
Many interesting and important challenges include design and development
of mobile commerce applications, networking requirements, transactions
and security issues, business models and strategies. Mobile commerce
will also significantly benefit from research in mobile devices, mobile
middleware, and wireless network infrastructure. Vehicular technologies
and intelligent transportation systems are likely to play a very
important role in this emerging area of commerce. The symposium will
bring together experts in this field and address significant
challenges in mobile commerce from both technology and business
application point of views.
The symposium will cover several topics including
* New m-commerce applications including mobile advertising, mobile
financial applications, mobile inventory, proactive service management,
wireless re-engineering among others
* Requirements of m-commerce applications
* Development of mobile commerce applications (new constraints,
approaches, interoperability, processing and storage, desirable
features)
* Vehicular commerce
* Use of vehicular technologies in m-commerce
* Vehicle to vehicle commerce
* Intelligent transportation systems and m-commerce
* Emerging vehicular technologies for m-commerce
* Infrastructure support from wireless networks (location management,
wireless dependability, coverage, roaming, inter-working etc)
* Location management support for mobile commerce (indoor vs outdoor,
precision, performance and transaction requirements, multiple location
technologies)
* Location and context awareness
* User and location specific service discovery
* Devices, middleware, and operating systems support
* Security and transactions in mobile commerce (mobile commerce transactions
over wireless networks, new and current security paradigms for
m-commerce)
* Business issues and models for mobile commerce (pricing and new ways of
charging, revenue generation and division among carriers and operators
* Other emerging and related issues to m-commerce applications and technologies
We are currently in the process of negotiating with a journal for a
special issue on m-commerce. Some of the best papers from this symposium
are likely to be included in the proposed issue.

CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications
WIRELESS AD HOC NETWORKS
http://www.argreenhouse.com/society/J-SAC/Calls/wireless_adhoc.html
*
*Novel approaches are needed to address ad hoc networks, which are
characterized by the lack of an infrastructure. For example,
point-to-point and point-to-multipoint modes of communication must be
supported in a multihop network that typically consists of small (often
disadvantaged) users that are characterized by severely limited energy
supply, signal-processing capability, antenna directivity, bandwidth,
etc. Crucial applications for mobile ad hoc networks include military
communications and disaster relief, although commercial applications are
certainly possible as well. In applications with a large number of
nodes, scalability is a major concern.
The study of ad hoc networks is an interdisciplinary one, which can
potentially incorporate communication and information theory,
distributed networking algorithms, data structures and compression,
coding, signal processing, detection, antenna characteristics,
optimization methods, simulation, testbed implementations etc. Papers
submitted for this special issue must directly address ad hoc networking
issues.
We outline here only a few of the many aspects of ad hoc network design
and control that will be addressed in this special issue. First,
distributed network organization algorithms (such as those for
clustering) may be used to create the equivalent of an ad hoc
infrastructure. Distributed algorithms are also needed for routing,
channel access, and other control functions. Networking techniques for
ad hoc networks must address the challenges imposed by the all-wireless
environment. For example, by contrast with wired networks, the
conventional layered protocol stack is not well suited to the ad hoc
wireless networking environment because it does not exploit the
potential improvements in performance that can be obtained by jointly
designing protocols that span multiple layers. Specifically, it is
expected that improved performance can be obtained by considering the
properties of the physical and data link layers when designing and
operating the media-access control (MAC) protocol. Similarly, there are
potential benefits to be obtained by developing protocols that address
jointly the routing and MAC functions. Additional benefits can be
obtained by jointly addressing higher-layer functions along with routing
and MAC. Energy-aware protocols (from the perspective of either
energy-efficient or energy-constrained operation) are of critical
importance in many ad hoc scenarios. Such energy-aware operation can
span multiple layers, e.g., by addressing trade-offs between energy used
for RF transmission and for signal processing.
It is the goal of this special issue to reflect the latest in the state
of the art in ad hoc networks by examining all aspects of ad hoc network
design and control, including the dependencies between various network
functions and the potential benefits that can be gained by cross-layer
design. We are interested in papers on fundamental performance limits,
but more importantly on algorithm design and performance, system
implementations, etc.
We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished
contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc networking. Possible
topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Physical layer issues in ad hoc networks
* Media Access Control (MAC) techniques
* Self-organizing architectures and protocols
* Routing protocols
* Cross-layer protocol design
* Mobility management
* Protocols for mobile applications
* Transport-layer issues
* Signal-processing issues in ad hoc networks
* Integration with wired networks
* Applications
* Energy-aware protocols
* Security in ad hoc networks
* Capacity and scheduling
* Node implementation
* Effects on existing protocols
* Quality of service
* Broadcasting and multicasting
* Multimedia and traffic integration
* Experiments and testbeds
* Error-control schemes
* Synchronization and scheduling
* Scalability
* Performance analysis and simulation
* Properties of antennas

* Fundamental limits in ad hoc networks
All papers on any of the above topics must include a definite and strong
connection to ad hoc networks. Please contact Jeffrey Wieselthier at
wieselthier(a)itd.nrl.navy.mil if there are any questions about the
suitability of the paper for this special issue.
