In addition, several R&D projects are currently underway, which address vertical handovers between WLANs and UMTS, as well as common authentication, authorization and accounting procedures. It is evident that the integration of WLANs and cellular telecommunication networks is of paramount importance nowadays, from both business and technology points of view. However, this integration poses several challenges, such as vertical handovers, consistent QoS provision, common authentication and billing, etc, which call for extensive studies and efficient solutions. The VTC 2003 symposium on Wireless LAN / Cellular Interworking aims to address the aforementioned challenges and to propose and analyze efficient interworking solutions. It also aims at reporting the recent results of related R&D and standardization activities worldwide. Meanwhile, wireless LAN (WLAN) technology is becoming increasingly popular for providing IP connectivity in corporate, campus, and other hotspot environments and is seen by some as a potential platform for 4G wireless. WLAN technology is relatively cheap and quick to deploy, and provides high data rates. On the other hand, 3G technology can provide wide-area coverage. Do WLANs and 3G networks have to compete, or can they be complementary? The complementary characteristics of 3G networks and WLANs has raised much interest in the integration of 3G and WLAN. This topic has attracted much attention in the industry as well as in academia. The integration between 3G wireless and WLAN is highly significant to make wireless multimedia and other high data rate services a reality to a large population. This special issue of IEEE Communications Magazine seeks to provide an opportunity to publish a series of state-of-the-art papers in the area of 3G and WLAN integration. Topics of interest include, but not limited to: · Interworking architectures between 3G wireless and WLANs · Services in integrated 3G wireless/WLAN environments · Standardization activities in 3G/WLAN · Mobility management in integrated 3G/WLAN architectures · Authentication and security in integrated 3G/WLAN · Network management and billing issues in integrated 3G/WLAN · Hardware and software issues for mobile stations supporting integrated 3G and WLAN technologies · Quality of service and policy issues · Interworking of radio resource management · Mapping of functions and services between 3G and WLAN Authors must follow the IEEE Communications Magazine guidelines regarding the manuscript and its format. Whereas the main thrust of IPv6 is the greatly increased addressing space, which is expected to provide ample address space for the foreseeable future, IPv6 also introduces several other features like integrated security (IPsec), integrated multicasting, improved mobility support (Mobile IPv6), QoS support with the provisioning of flow labels and autoconfiguration. Router products supporting dual stack operation with IPv4 and IPv6 have entered the market during the last two years. Nevertheless the adoption of IPv6 is progressing rather slowly. This is mainly due to the fact that the introduction of a new network layer is a difficult and expensive step for network operators and ISPs and a strong demand for IPv6 from the user perspective is still lacking. However, the shortage of addresses particularly in Asia and Europe and the trend to mobile and ubiqitous networking makes the introduction of IPv6 an urgent issue. Scope of Expected Contributions We invite contributions covering all aspects of next generation, IPv6-based networks, including, but not limited to routing and address space management, security and privacy aspects, multicasting and multimedia distribution networks, mobile network architecture, impact on other protocol layers and services, as well as performance aspects in IPv6. In addition we invite contributions on IPv4 to IPv6 transition and introduction strategies, large scale IPv6 trial experiences and commercial service introduction, user requirements, as well as ubiquitous networking applications and IPv6 management and operations support. Preference will be given to contributions covering specific advantages or problems in large scale IPv6 networks, rather than to introductory IPv6 papers.
