Special Issue on Industrial Internet of Things
Internet Technology Letters
Call for Papers
More than one decade ago emerged the Internet of Things (IoT), setting
the basis for innovative applications for our everyday life. We have now
a large variety of both wired (e.g. IEEE802.1TSN, IEEE802.1Qbu,
IEEE802.1Qbv, Detnet) and wireless (e.g. IEEE802.15.4, 6TiSCH,
WirelessHART, Z-Wave, WiSUN, WirelessMBUS, Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11 RTA,
LoRa, ETSI LTN, mmWave) technologies to connect more and more smart and
uniquely identifiable objects.
After providing best-effort connectivity, the Industrial Internet of
Things (IIoT) requires a network infrastructure which supports real-time
communications. Most critical applications require high-reliability, and
an upper-bounded end-to-end latency has to be respected.
The Industrial Internet of Things is expected to support many critical
applications. Industry 4.0 will rely on wireless and wired
infrastructure to interconnect all the actuators, sensors and
controllers, even for the control loops. To a greater extent, IIoT is
particularly relevant also for e.g. robot control loops, reliable
industrial monitoring, critical operation/actuation, etc.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Resilient Systems, Dependable networking, Automated Diagnostics and
Predictions;
Quality of Service, Quality of Experience, Service Level Agreements;
Implementation details and benchmarking of Industrial IoT protocols;
Efficient communication protocols for industrial IoT;
5G: architecture, medium access, virtualization;
Performance Bounds, Soft/Hard Real-time, Formal Methods;
Security: privacy, policy management, IDS;
OS and Middleware, industrial cloud;
Real-world deployments, Lessons Learnt;
Standards-based solutions, Interoperability and Integration;
Seamless wired and wireless real-time infrastructure;
Handling mobility in industrial networks;
Interconnection of legacy and novel network technologies;
Applications: reliable monitoring, low latency control, automation,
robotics, etc.

The Fifth International Conference on Fog and Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC
2020)
http://emergingtechnet.org/FMEC2020/index.php
Paris, France. April 20-23, 2020
Technically Co-Sponsored by IEEE France Section
*FMEC 2020 CFP:*
Cloud computing provides large range of services and virtually unlimited
available resources for users. New applications, such as virtual reality
and smart building control, have emerged due to the large number of
resources and services brought by cloud computing. However, the
delay-sensitive applications face the problem of large latency, especially
when several smart devices and objects are getting involved in human’s life
such as the case of smart cities or Internet of Things. Therefore, cloud
computing is unable to meet the requirements of low latency, location
awareness, and mobility support. To solve this problem, researchers have
introduced a trusted and dependable solution through the Fog and the Mobile
Edge Computing (FMEC) to put the services and resources of the cloud closer
to users, which facilitates the leveraging of available services and
resources in the edge networks. By this, we are moving from the core (cloud
data centers) to the edge of the network closer to the users. FMEC
dependability is based on providing user centric service. The purpose of
Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing is to run the heavy real-time
applications at the network edge directly using the billions of connected
mobile devices.
Several features enable the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing to be a
perfect paradigm to the aforementioned purpose, which are the dense
geographical deployment of servers, supporting mobility and the closeness

*Special Issue on *
Resource Management of IoT Edge devices: Challenges, Techniques, and
Solutions
*Software: Practice and Experience (Wiley Press) *
*Call for Papers *
With the growth of Internet of things (IoT) paradigm, there has been a
tremendous makeshift in how the distributed devices work to achieve a
common goal. However, it remains essential that all these devices work in a
coherent manner to perform a collective action. This makes the task of
resource provisioning extremely important in such a paradigm. The end-user
level in IoT mostly comprise of the low computation and communication
powered devices. An improper utilization of the available resources in such
a scenario burdens the complete system and degrades the quality of service.
In such a scenario, the use of cloud computing techniques can help to
manage the resources effectively.
More so, with the emergence of relatively newer cloud-based technologies
such as edge and fog computing, resource management in the IoT has become
far more effective. These technologies bring the computation and
communication capabilities closer to the IoT devices where some of the
services can be offloaded to the edge devices. These devices are called IoT
edge devices and they provide a unique opportunity to tackle some of the
existing and pertinent issues for resource management in IoT paradigms; yet
at the same time, they face their own set of challenges. However, the use
of IoT edge devices in a traditional IoT paradigm results in better
utilization of the available resources as well as improving the overall
quality of service.
Keeping this in mind, this special issue will address the resource
management in IoT edge devices with the focus on various challenges faced,
and potential techniques and solutions to address such challenges by
leveraging IoT edge devices. The researchers, both at the academic and
industrial level, working on resource management in IoT edge devices can
share their latest results to create wider awareness about their schemes.
The topics of interest include (but not necessarily limited to):
- Resource provisioning using IoT edge devices
- Improving quality of service using IoT edge devices
- Novel architectures for integrating IoT models with edge devices
- Use of advanced learning methods such as artificial intelligence and
deep learning for resource management in IoT edge devices
- Exploiting edge devices for computation offloading in IoT paradigms
- Analysis of overheads and requirements for using IoT edge devices
- Security and resilience issues in IoT edge devices

CALL FOR PAPERS for Special Issue on
Mobile and Social Sensing
https://www.journals.elsevier.com/pervasive-and-mobile-computing/call-for-p…
**************************************************************************************************************************************************
The ubiquity of smart phones together with the popularity of social
media heralds an era of mobile and social sensing. Mobile and social
sensing is becoming a paradigm for collecting observations of the
physical phenomena, either directly from human observers, or by means
of crowd-sourcing the data measurement tasks using sensors in the
smart phones or various other wearables (e.g., Google Glass, Apple
Watch, and Fitbit devices). It thus involves massive amount of sensory
data collection and/or dissemination where humans can act as sensor
carriers (e.g., carrying GPS sensors that share location data), sensor
operators (e.g., taking pictures and videos with smart phones), or as
sensors themselves (e.g., sharing their observations on social media).
This emerging field faces new challenges in data collection,
dissemination, fusion, and mining; cognitive modeling; computational
social and behavior science; information and coding theory;
information processing and knowledge discovery; data dissemination and
forwarding, reliability, privacy, and security; and
cyber-physical-systems with human-in/on-the-loop. This special issue
invites technical papers on both theoretical contributions and systems

Topics:
(1) IoT technologies in Sustainable Energy and Environment
IoT is expected to be a major producer of big data. Sharing and
collaboration of data and other resources would be the key for enabling
sustainable ubiquitous environments, such as smart cities and societies.
A timely fusion and analysis of big data, acquired from IoT and other
sources, to enable highly efficient, reliable, and accurate
decision-making and management of ubiquitous environments would be a
grand future challenge. Computational intelligence would play a key role
in this challenge (Furqan Alam, et al. 2017). The new era of Web and IoT
paradigm is being enabled by the proliferation of various devices like
RFIDs, sensors, and actuators. Smart devices are embedded in the
environment to monitor and collect ambient information. In smart cities,
intelligent services could be offered on top of such information related
to any aspect of humans' activities. Some examples of services able to
guarantee sustainable environments are IoT-enabled waste management, the
use of IoT hardware and software technologies for the buildings energy
efficiency in terms of reducing energy consumption and improving the
internal comfort, smart grids, smart homes, physical security, enhanced
street lighting controls, infrastructure monitoring, public safety and
surveillance in indoor and outdoor environments.
(2) E-health
Emerging ICT technologies are playing more and more a very important
role in the Healthcare sector. The efficiency of healthcare
infrastructures and biomedical systems is one of the most challenging
goals of modern-day society (Nguyen et al. 2019). In fact, the need of
delivering quality care to patients while reducing the healthcare costs
and, at the same time, tackling the nursing staff shortage problem is a
primary issue. Furthermore, innovative solutions able to support and
improve the elderly people quality of life exploiting emerging
technologies enabling the IoT are fundamentals to create the new smart
cities, thought also for people no so young. Furthermore, the behavioral
analysis of elderly people is an important science aiming to prevent
Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and frailty problems. A fundamental
aspect in this context is to explore the use of innovative technologies
enabling the Internet of Things (IoT), above all sensors, to
unobtrusively capture personal data for automatically recognizing
behavioral changes in elderly people. Artificial Intelligence, based on
Machine Learning or Deep Learning techniques, represents a valid
candidate to face these challenges.
(3) IoT technologies in Transportation and Low Carbon Products
Smart transportation, also known as intelligent transportation systems,
is another important IoT-based application, in which intelligent
transportation management, control system, communication networks, and
computing techniques are integrated to make transportation systems
reliable, efficient, and secure (Lin et al., 2015). In the smart
transportation system, a large number of smart vehicles are included and
connected with each other through wireless networks. Smart vehicles can
efficiently perceive and share traffic data and schedule drivers’
travels with great efficiency, reliability, and safety. Recently, smart
vehicles with Self-Driving have been designed and tested. Those smart
vehicles can detect objects around them and safely manage speed during
traveling without the operation of drivers. IoT-aware technologies such
as software architecture based on Cloud-, Edge-or Fog-Computing play a
very important role to face these challenges. Another important topic,
in the smart transportation field is related to security issue, in
particular managed with the block chain approach.
(4) Smart Cities
Smart cities can be considered a complex IoT paradigm, which aims to
manage public affairs via introducing information and communication
technology (ICT) solutions (Zanella et al., 2014). Smart cities can use
public resources in more efficient ways, resulting in the improvement of
the QoSs provided to users and the reduction of operational costs to
public administrators. Smart cities may consist of several sub
applications or services, including the smart gird, smart
transportation, smart hospital, smart building, smart waste management,
environmental monitoring, smart health, smart lighting, etc. All these
sub applications, or services, should be supported by a unified
communication network infrastructure, or communication networks designed
for these sub applications or services should be interconnected to
establish a large-scale interconnected heterogeneous network for IoT
applications, with the aim of achieving the best use of public resources
in cities (Lin et al. 2017).
