-- Details: https://www.sigmobile.org/mobisys/2018/student-travel-grant/
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MobiSys 2018 is pleased to provide student travel grants to broaden the
participation in the main conference and co-located events (Workshops,
Ph.D. Forum, Poster/Demo sessions, etc.). Funds for these travel grants
are provided by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and ACM
SIGMOBILE. While the NSF grants are available only for full-time
undergraduate and graduate students attending US colleges and
universities (not necessarily US citizens or permanent residents),
the ACM SIGMOBILE grants are available for International/US full-time
undergraduate and graduate students. Priority will be given to students
who will benefit from attending the MobiSys main conference and its
co-located events, but are unlikely to attend due to the unavailability
of travel funding. Underrepresented minorities and female students, as
well as first-time attendees that do not have a paper at the conference,
are particularly encouraged to apply.
Applications for the Student Travel Grant should be sent electronically
as a single PDF attachment to the Mobisys 2018 Student Travel Grant
Chairs, at mobisys18stg(a)googlegroups.com
<mailto:mobisys18stg@googlegroups.com>, by April 30, 2018. The subject
line of the email should be MobiSys 2018 Student Travel Grant [US] if
applicants are from US institutions. The subject line of the email
should be MobiSys 2018 Student Travel Grant [International] if
applicants are from institutions outside US. A complete application
should consist of the student's CV, a short personal statement (maximum
one page), and a supporting letter from the student's advisor.
The supporting letter can be merged with the student application in the
same pdf file (preferred option) or sent as a separate pdf file by the
student’s advisor to the Student Travel Grant Chairs,
at mobisys18stg(a)googlegroups.com.
The student's short personal statement (maximum one page) should include:
• The title of his/her accepted MobiSys work (conference/workshop paper,
poster/demo, PhD forum) - if the student is an author.
• A brief summary of research interests and accomplishments to date.
• A description of areas reflected in the MobiSys 2018 program that
would affect the student's research.
• Importance of attending the conference to the student's research
activities.
• An estimate of the following costs of attending MobiSys 2018: airfare,
hotel, and conference registration. It is anticipated that travel grants
will partially cover these attendance costs.
The supporting letter from the student’s advisor should include:

OVERVIEW
========
Robot vehicle platforms, often called “drones”, offer exciting new
opportunities for mobile computing. While traditional mobile systems
respond to device mobility (such as smartphones), drones allow computer
systems to actively control device location, allowing them to interact
with the physical world in new ways and with new-found scale,
efficiency, or precision. The startup cost to experiment with and build
real drone applications has dropped dramatically in recent years, also
thanks to technological developments driven by the smartphone industry
and the rise of the “makers” and DIY movements. Recent popular
applications employing drones are 3D-mapping, search and rescue,
surveillance, farmland and construction monitoring, delivery of
light-weight objects and products, and video production.
DroNet welcomes contributions dealing with all facets of drones as
mobile computing platforms, including system aspects, theoretical
studies, algorithm and protocol design, as well as requirements,
constraints, dependability, and regulations. We are particularly looking
for papers reporting on experimental results of deployed systems,
summaries of challenges or advancements, measurements, and innovative
applications. The primary focus of this workshop will be on civilian
applications of drones.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Novel applications of drones
- Drone system design and deployment
- Drone ad-hoc networks
- Micro flying systems
- Aerial communication protocol design
- Drone operating systems
- Programming systems
- MAC and routing protocols for drone fleets
- Theoretical analysis and models for drone networks
- Solutions for sparse and dense fleets of drones
- Spectrum and regulatory issues
- Mission and context-aware solutions
- Drone coordination
- Mobility-aware and 3D communication
- Delay-tolerant networks and ferrying
- Energy-efficient operation and harvesting
- Integration of drones with backend systems
- Drone-based sensor networks
- Positioning and localization
- Swarm movement, coordination, and behavior
- Autonomous flight
- Artificial intelligence techniques for drones
- Vision and object tracking
- Human drone interaction
- Cooperative surveillance, smart cameras and sensors
- Acceptance, security, and privacy aspects
- Experimental results of aerial communication

CALL FOR PAPERS
Information and communications technologies have progressed rapidly in this
millennium for people to communicate and exchange information using
multimedia (speech, video/image, text) and the same has extended to
internet of things (IoT) and machine-to-machine and machine-to-human
communication. Propelled by the explosive growth in IoT, this trend is only
going to accelerate in the years to come with new inventions in the =C3=A1r=
ea of
human-IoT interaction technologies to deliver powerful engaging and
intuitive experiences. But, these developments have remained confined to
only the sensing and transmission of aural and optical information in the
digital domain through the use of microphone, camera, speaker and display
devices. However, the ability to integrate the other three sensory
features, namely, olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste) and tactile (touch)
in information transfer and replication to deliver Star-Wars-like being
there experience are still far from reality.
Human bond communication (HBC) is a novel concept that incorporates all
five sensory information
from sensing to digitization to transmission and replication at the
receiver to allow more expressive, engaging, realistic and holistic
information between humans, and in some cases between humans and machines
(M2H) or IoTs.
This FT solicits articles that explore different aspects of HBC, IoTs for
HBC and the interplay between these two fields, M2M and M2H, which also
include the other three human sensory information (olfactory, tactile and
gustatory) in addition to aural and optical sensors. Although the FT
invites papers on research topics on sensing and replication, the focus of
these papers should be on the ICT angle in this regards and on how
information is encoded, transmitted and decoded reliably and securely in a
world which would increasingly become multi-sensory.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Communication aspects of biometric extending to all five senses
- Smart body area network
- Brain-to-brain communication
- Brain-to-brain interface, Brain-to-computer interface,
Computer-to-brain interface
- Gustatory, tactile, olfactory sensing and replication
- Human bond communication
- Human bond communication(s) interface
- Human unwelt expansi=C3=B3n
- Interplay between HBC and IoT
- Invasive (i.e. bionic) approaches
- Physical world augmentation (PWA) through the inclusion of all
five senses
- Privacy, security, and reliability in HBC
- Sensory augmentation, sensory substitution
- Wearable(s) with non-aural and non-optical sensor
- Wireless body area network
- Sensor encoding, transmission and decoding

actuation are expeditiously bringing robots into our daily lives. The
near future holds promise of driverless cars, package delivering drones,
precision agriculture, co-working robots, and others. A major paradigm
change with these applications is the degree of autonomy of the robot,
and the close proximity of their operation in urban environments. This
is dramatically different from prior deployments of automation in
factories with very structured environments constructed for their
operation. This change brings several challenges arising from close
proximity of operation with humans, modality of interaction, general
awareness, and others. This workshop is interested in bringing out the
computer systems challenges that this future paradigm presents. Such
systems challenges include spatial awareness of the robot, ability to
react in a timely manner, faster and better modes of interaction, and
systems/protocols for seamless interaction in diverse environments.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel paradigm which is shaping the
evolution of the future Internet. According to the vision underlying the
IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after
connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate
objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities
and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed and ubiquitous
network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which
can be fully integrated into the current Internet and mobile networks,
thus allowing for the development of new intelligent services available
anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything.
Many applications with high social and business impact fall under the
IoT umbrella, including personal healthcare, smart grid, surveillance,
home automation, intelligent transportation, while it is expected that
new ones will emerge once the enabling technologies reach a stable state.
At the moment, four of the most important challenges are:
- Architectures, protocols and algorithms for an efficient
interconnection of smart objects, both between themselves and with
the (future) Internet within the 5G context.
- The creation of value-added services in cross-domain applications,
especially open and interoperable, enabled by the interconnection of
things / machines / smart objects, in such a way that they can be
integrated with current and new business and development processes.
- The support of a virtualized IoT based on the concepts of virtualized
components and functions within dense and heterogeneous environments.
- Security, privacy and trust in the IoT applications, for ensuring that
the provided services will protect the users' data, provide guarantees
that no malicious users/devices will affect the system decisions and
that the IoT applications will be secure and privacy-preserving
"by design".
The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and
researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for
discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in theory,
application and implementation of the Internet of Things concept:
technologies, protocols, algorithms, and services.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- System architectures for the IoT
- Protocols and mechanisms for seamless IoT communications
- Modeling and simulation of large-scale IoT scenarios
- Enabling standards and technologies for the IoT
- Service platforms for IoT applications
- Business models and processes for IoT applications
- Energy optimization and sustainable operation of IoT devices
- Access network issues; including mobility management, data
dissemination and routing
- Testbeds for the IoT
- Security, privacy and Trust in the IoT context
- Experiences with IoT system prototypes and pilots
- Novel and emerging IoT applications; including eHealth/mHealth,
Smart Grid/Smart-Metering, Intelligent Transportation Systems,
Smart House/Neighborhood/Cities
- Industrial use cases showing gaps to be filled by future research
- Ethical issues in the IoT applications
- Optimized and robust dynamic spectrum access on IoT
- Integration of IoT with Cloud and Fog computing
- Emerging communication technologies for IoT,
e.g. Low Power WAN and D2D
- Protocols and architectures for Industrial IoT
