IFIP NETWORKING 2005 -- CALL FOR PAPERS
University of Waterloo, Waterloo Ontario Canada
May 2 - 6, 2005
Due date for submissions: November 8, 2005
Networking 2005 is the fourth event in the series of International
Conferences on Networking, organized by the IFIP Technical Committee on
Communication Systems (TC 6). Previous events were held in Paris
(France) in 2000, Pisa (Italy) in 2002, and Athens (Greece) in 2004.
Based on the success of this biannual event, IFIP TC 6 decided to hold
the Networking conference every year starting in 2005. Networking 2005
will take place between May 2 and 6, at the University of Waterloo,
Ontario, Canada. The conference is organized by the University of
Waterloo and sponsored by the IFIP working groups on Network and
Internetwork Architectures (WG 6.2), Performance of Communication
Systems (WG 6.3), Wireless Communications (WG 6.8), and Photonic
Networking (WG 6.10).
Networking 2005 will be structured along three tracks:
Networking Technologies, Services and Protocols
Performance of Computer and Communication Networks
Mobile and Wireless Communications Systems

3rd International Conference on Pervasive Computing
PERVASIVE 2005 - http://www.pervasive.ifi.lmu.de/
8-12 May, 2005, Munich, Germany
Submission Deadline: 6 October 2004
*** submission is still open ***
PERVASIVE 2005 - Call for Papers
---
PERVASIVE 2005 invites original and significant research
contributions in the area of pervasive computing technologies,
systems and applications. This conference seeks to present
advances in computing technology toward new modes of operation
(ubiquitous, continuous, and self-organized) and toward new usage
models (ambient, context-aware, and integral with human activity
and environments).
Building on the success of previous conferences in this series
held in Zurich (August 2002) and in Linz/Vienna (April 2004),
PERVASIVE 2005 will include a highly selective single-track
program for technical papers, accompanied by posters, videos,
demonstrations, workshops, and a doctoral colloquium. Papers will
be included in the conference proceedings published by Springer-
Verlag as Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) and will also
be made available through digital libraries. Extended abstracts
for poster, video and demo contributions will be included in
adjunct proceedings for the conference attendees.
The conference particularly values practical experience with
design, deployment and use of pervasive systems and applications,
and investigation of exciting and inspiring ideas and
technologies. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

Paper Submission
---
For PERVASIVE 2005 we are soliciting high quality technical papers
that describe original, unpublished research on pervasive
computing. Submissions should report concrete, significant, and
transferable results that help advance the state of the art in
pervasive computing. All papers will be peer-reviewed by members
of the PERVASIVE 2005 program committee and by additional expert
reviewers from relevant research communities. PERVASIVE 2005
requires that submissions have not been published previously and
that papers submitted are not under simultaneous review for any
other conference, journal or other publication.
Papers for PERVASIVE 2005 should be formatted according to the
Springer-Verlag LNCS style. We solicit papers of up to 18 pages
but explicitly welcome shorter papers of up to 10 pages for
presentation of pointed results. All paper submissions will be
treated as full papers but it is important that their length is
appropriate for their content.
Paper submissions have to be anonymized to facilitate blind
review. Authors should take care throughout their paper that their
and their institution's identity is not revealed. However relevant
references to an author's previous research should not be
suppressed as they may be required for reviewers to understand and
evaluate the paper's contribution.
Late Breaking Results, Videos and Demonstrations
---
PERVASIVE 2005 aims to be a forum to communicate novel and
innovative ideas and very recent findings in pervasive computing.
PERVASIVE 2005 will include a poster, video and demo program to
give researchers opportunity to present their research in a
variety of engaging formats. We explicitly encourage submission
of late breaking results and work in progress in these categories.
Workshops
---
Workshops provide an opportunity to discuss areas of special
interest within pervasive computing with like-minded researchers
and practitioners. Workshops will be focussed and aimed at sharing
of understandings, experiences, and ideas on particular aspects of
pervasive computing. Workshop proposals may be related to any
topic of pervasive computing. Please contact the Workshops Chair
Antonio Krüger (krueger(a)cs.uni-sb.de) if you would like to propose
a workshop.
There will be a workshop on Location- and Context-Awareness (LoCA 2005)
at the German Aero Space Center (DLR) near Munich on the 12th and 13th
of May 2005, see http://loca2005.context-aware.org/ for details.
Doctoral Colloquium
---
A doctoral colloquium will be held directly before the main
conference, as a forum for PhD students to present, discuss and
defend their work in progress. This will build on the huge success
of the PERVASIVE 2004 doctoral colloquium held at the University
of Linz, at which 28 PhD students from around the world discussed
their work with an international group of advisors selected from
across the pervasive computing community.

System Aspects in Organic and Pervasive Computing
Innsbruck, Austria, March 14-17, 2005
http://www.teco.edu/arcs05
Extended Paper Submission Deadline: October 3, 2004
=======================================================================
Future computer systems will be much more integrated into the fabric of
everyday life than today's computers are. They will become smaller, more
appropriate for their use, integrated into everyday objects and often
virtually or physically invisible to the users. They will be also
deployed in a much higher quantity and penetrate many application areas
To provide such features and functionality, computer devices become
tinier yet still increase in complexity; they must consume less power,
while still supporting advanced computation and communications, such
that they are highly connected yet still operate as autonomous units.
This brings several research topics to the fore, including ultra-low
power consumption, self-awareness, adaptive networking, smart behavior
of systems, scalability and complexity of devices and systems.
Pervasive and ubiquitous computing research addresses such issues by
developing concepts and technology for interweaving computers into our
everyday life. The principle approach is to enhance system functionality
and adaptability by recognizing context and situations in the
environment. Organic computing then addresses high system complexity by
drawing analogies from complex biological systems, with the
human-centered goal of self-organization. Organic computing
investigates the design and implementation of self-managing systems that
are selfconfiguring, self-optimizing, self-healing, self-protecting,
context aware, and anticipatory. ARCS 2004 will emphasize the design,
realization and analysis of the emerging computing systems for organic
and pervasive computing and their scientific, engineering, and commercial
applications. The conference focuses on system aspects of organic and
pervasive computing in software and hardware. In particular, system
integration and self-management of hardware, software and networks are
in the centre of interest.
ARCS 2005 continues and replaces the biennial series of German
Conferences on Architecture of Computing Systems. This 18th conference
in the series serves as a forum to present current work on all aspects
of computer and systems architecture. Besides its main focus, the
conference is open for more general and interdisciplinary themes in
operating systems, networking, and computer architecture. Papers
pertaining to aspects of computer and systems architecture, in particular
in the field of organic and pervasive computing are sought, including:
Enabling Technologies and Infrastructure
- operating systems
- middleware for organic, pervasive and peer-to-peer computing
- multi-agent and mobile agent systems
- bio-analogue and artificial-life systems
- context and locality
- low power systems design
- machine-learning, prediction, pro-activity
- system design and simulation
- reconfigurable hardware and software systems
- safety, security, reliability
- self-managing service configuration
Architectures and Systems
- computer and system architecture
- modular distributed devices
- self-managing, self-healing and fault-tolerant systems
- real-time systems
- mobile and wearable devices
- embedded systems (consumer electronics, automotive)
Applications
- scenarios for ubiquitous and pervasive computing
- autonomic environments
- network server architectures and network based applications
- semantic networks
- ubiquitous, home and wireless networking
The conference is organized by the special interest group on Computer
and Systems Architecture of the GI (Gesellschaft für Informatik -
German Informatics Society) and ITG (Informationstechnische
Gesellschaft - Information Technology Society), supported by OCG
(Austrian Computer Society), OVE/GIT (Austrian Electrotechnical
Associastion) and electrosuisse (ITG), and held in cooperation with
IFIP, ACM and IEEE (approval requested). In addition to technical
sessions of contributed paper presentations, the conference will offer
invited presentations, workshops, and tutorials. The conference
proceedings will be published in the 'Lecture Notes in Computer Science'
series by Springer-Verlag. Papers should not exceed 15 pages
(approximately 5000 words) in Springer LNCS style. We accept only
electronic submissions in postscript or pdf format. The URL of the
submission site is http://www.teco.edu/arcs05/ . Selected papers will
be published in the Personal and Ubiquitous Computing Journal.

Call For Papers
18th International Conference on
Architecture of Computing Systems (ARCS)
-
System Aspects in Organic and Pervasive Computing
Innsbruck, Austria, March 14-17, 2005
http://www.teco.edu/arcs05
Extended Paper Submission Deadline: October 3, 2004
============================================================================================
Future computer systems will be much more integrated into the fabric of everyday life than today's
computers are. They will become smaller, more appropriate for their use, integrated into everyday objects
and often virtually or physically invisible to the users. They will be also deployed in a much higher quantity
and penetrate many application areas.
To provide such features and functionality, computer devices become tinier yet still increase in complexity;
they must consume less power, while still supporting advanced computation and communications, such that
they are highly connected yet still operate as autonomous units. This brings several research topics to the
fore, including ultra-low power consumption, self-awareness, adaptive networking, smart behavior of
systems, scalability and complexity of devices and systems. Pervasive and ubiquitous computing research
addresses such issues by developing concepts and technology for interweaving computers into our
everyday life. The principle approach is to enhance system functionality and adaptability by recognizing
context and situations in the environment. Organic computing then addresses high system complexity by
drawing analogies from complex biological systems, with the human-centered goal of self-organization.
Organic computing investigates the design and implementation of self-managing systems that are selfconfiguring,
self-optimizing, self-healing, self-protecting, context aware, and anticipatory.
ARCS 2004 will emphasize the design, realization and analysis of the emerging computing systems for
organic and pervasive computing and their scientific, engineering, and commercial applications. The
conference focuses on system aspects of organic and pervasive computing in software and hardware. In
particular, system integration and self-management of hardware, software and networks are in the centre of
interest.
ARCS 2005 continues and replaces the biennial series of German Conferences on Architecture of
Computing Systems. This 18th conference in the series serves as a forum to present current work on all
aspects of computer and systems architecture. Besides its main focus, the conference is open for more
general and interdisciplinary themes in operating systems, networking, and computer architecture. Papers
pertaining to aspects of computer and systems architecture, in particular in the field of organic and
pervasive computing are sought, including:
Enabling Technologies and Infrastructure
- operating systems
- middleware for organic, pervasive and peer-to-peer computing
- multi-agent and mobile agent systems
- bio-analogue and artificial-life systems
- context and locality
- low power systems design
- machine-learning, prediction, pro-activity
- system design and simulation
- reconfigurable hardware and software systems
- safety, security, reliability
- self-managing service configuration
Architectures and Systems
- computer and system architecture
- modular distributed devices
- self-managing, self-healing and fault-tolerant systems
- real-time systems
- mobile and wearable devices
- embedded systems (consumer electronics, automotive)
Applications
- scenarios for ubiquitous and pervasive computing
- autonomic environments
- network server architectures and network based applications
- semantic networks
- ubiquitous, home and wireless networking
The conference is organized by the special interest group on Computer and Systems Architecture of the GI
(Gesellschaft für Informatik - German Informatics Society) and ITG (Informationstechnische Gesellschaft-
Information Technology Society), supported by OCG (Austrian Computer Society), OVE/GIT (Austrian
Electrotechnical Associastion) and electrosuisse (ITG), and held in cooperation with IFIP, ACM and IEEE
(approval requested). In addition to technical sessions of contributed paper presentations, the conference
will offer invited presentations, workshops, and tutorials.
Proceedings will be published in the 'Lecture Notes in Computer Science' series by Springer-Verlag. Papers
should not exceed 15 pages (approximately 5000 words) in Springer LNCS style. We accept only electronic
submissions in postscript or pdf format. The URL of the submission site is http://www.teco.edu/arcs05/ .
Selected papers will be published in the Personal and Ubiquitous Computing Journal. Workshops are

CALL FOR PAPERS
The 2nd IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing
(ICAC-05)
Renaissance Seattle Hotel, Seattle, WA
June 13-16, 2005
http://www.autonomic-conference.org
To deal with the increasing complexity of large-scale computer
and software systems, they must manage themselves, in accordance
with high-level guidance from humans - a vision that has been
referred to as autonomic computing. Meeting the grand challenges
of autonomic computing requires scientific and technological
advances in a wide variety of fields, as well as new software and
system architectures that support the effective integration of
the constituent technologies.
The purpose of the 2nd International Conference on Autonomic
Computing (ICAC'05) is to bring together researchers from
different fields of research who are addressing aspects of self-
management in computing systems. In doing so, we hope to develop
and nurture a community that can work together to realize the
vision of large-scale self-managing systems. Papers are solicited
on a broad array of topics of relevance to autonomic computing;
particularly those that bear on connections and relationships
among different areas of research or report on prototype systems
or experiences. Topics of interest include, but are not limited
to:
- Autonomic computing systems or prototype systems that
exhibit self-monitoring, self-configuration, self-
optimization, self-healing, and/or self-protection.
- Software architectures for self-managing systems,
based on Open Grid Services, Web Services, or novel
paradigms based on biological, economic, social, or
other analogies.
- Specific self-managing components, such as server,
client, database, storage, or network elements. Emphasis
should be placed on interactions with other components,
or techniques or lessons that may generalize to other
components.
- Toolkits, environments, models, languages, runtime and
compiler technologies for building self-managing
components, systems or applications.
- New technologies supporting system management, such as
service-level agreements, negotiation or conversation
support, and behavior enforcement.
- System-level technologies, middleware or services that
entail interactions among two or more components of self-
managing systems, such as health monitoring, dependency
analysis, problem localization or remediation, workload
management, and provisioning.
- Interfaces to autonomic systems, including user
interfaces, interfaces for monitoring and controlling
behavior, and techniques for defining, distributing, and
understanding policies.
- Fundamental science of self-managing systems:
understanding, controlling, or exploiting emergent
behavior, theoretical investigations of coupled feedback
loops, predictive methods, robustness, and related topics.
- Experiences with autonomic system or component prototypes:
measurements, evaluations, or analyses of system behavior,
user studies, or experiences with large-scale deployments
of self-managing systems or applications.
PAPER AND POSTER SUBMISSIONS
Full papers (up to 8 pages in length) and posters (2 pages) are
invited on a wide variety of topics relating to autonomic computing
as indicated above. All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on
correctness, originality, technical strength, significance, quality
of presentation, and interest and relevance to the conference.
Submitted papers may not have appeared in or be under consideration
for another conference or a journal, nor may they be under review
or submitted to another forum during the ICAC-05 review process.
Posters are not subject to any of these restrictions. Authors should
submit full papers or posters electronically (PDF or postscript) via
