* PERWARE 2004 *
* Middleware Support for Pervasive Computing Workshop *
* 2nd Conference on Pervasive Computing (PerCom) *
* *
* http://ciae.cs.uiuc.edu/perware/ *
*******************************************************
This workshop aims at bringing together researchers in the field
of middleware for pervasive computing to discuss new trends for
pervasive computing middleware. The workshop solicits papers
addressing the following topics:
1. Middleware design patterns for pervasive computing.
2. Middleware support for novel pervasive computing application models.
3. Middleware support for user-centric computing.
4. Middleware platforms for mobile devices.
5. Adaptable, recoverable, secure and fault tolerant middleware for
pervasive computing.
In order to ensure a high quality technical session, submissions must cover
one of the
topics above, and should not exceed five pages. Furthermore, we will
prioritize experience
papers describing lessons learnt from built systems, including information
about approaches
that did and did not work, unexpected results, common abstractions, and
metrics for evaluating
pervasive computing middleware infrastructures. One of the key issues for
debate is the underlying
structure of pervasive computing middleware, which includes different
possible configurations such
as peer-to-peer, location based, server oriented, and hybrid models. The
workshop will provide a
meeting point and a discussion forum for researchers working in this field.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Submissions of papers are solicited in the IEEE proceedings format.Research
papers must be original
prior unpublished work and not under review elsewhere. All submissions will
be reviewed blindly and
selected based on their originality, merit, and relevance to the workshop.
Accepted papers must be
presented at the workshop, and will appear in a combined PerCom 04 workshop
proceedings.

5. Adaptable, recoverable, secure and fault tolerant middleware for
pervasive computing.
In order to ensure a high quality technical session, submissions must
cover
one of the
topics above, and should not exceed five pages. Furthermore, we will
prioritize experience
papers describing lessons learnt from built systems, including
information
about approaches
that did and did not work, unexpected results, common abstractions, and
metrics for evaluating
pervasive computing middleware infrastructures. One of the key issues
for
debate is the underlying
structure of pervasive computing middleware, which includes different
possible configurations such
as peer-to-peer, location based, server oriented, and hybrid models. The
workshop will provide a
meeting point and a discussion forum for researchers working in this
field.

Subject: [Tccc] CFP: JSAC Special Issue on Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2003 17:49:13 -0400
From: Jeff Wieselthier <wieselthier(a)itd.nrl.navy.mil>

CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications
WIRELESS AD HOC NETWORKS
http://www.argreenhouse.com/society/J-SAC/Calls/wireless_adhoc.html
*
*Novel approaches are needed to address ad hoc networks, which are
characterized by the lack of an infrastructure. For example,
point-to-point and point-to-multipoint modes of communication must be
supported in a multihop network that typically consists of small (often
disadvantaged) users that are characterized by severely limited energy
supply, signal-processing capability, antenna directivity, bandwidth,
etc. Crucial applications for mobile ad hoc networks include military
communications and disaster relief, although commercial applications are
certainly possible as well. In applications with a large number of
nodes, scalability is a major concern.
The study of ad hoc networks is an interdisciplinary one, which can
potentially incorporate communication and information theory,
distributed networking algorithms, data structures and compression,
coding, signal processing, detection, antenna characteristics,
optimization methods, simulation, testbed implementations etc. Papers
submitted for this special issue must directly address ad hoc networking
issues.
We outline here only a few of the many aspects of ad hoc network design
and control that will be addressed in this special issue. First,
distributed network organization algorithms (such as those for
clustering) may be used to create the equivalent of an ad hoc
infrastructure. Distributed algorithms are also needed for routing,
channel access, and other control functions. Networking techniques for
ad hoc networks must address the challenges imposed by the all-wireless
environment. For example, by contrast with wired networks, the
conventional layered protocol stack is not well suited to the ad hoc
wireless networking environment because it does not exploit the
potential improvements in performance that can be obtained by jointly
designing protocols that span multiple layers. Specifically, it is
expected that improved performance can be obtained by considering the
properties of the physical and data link layers when designing and
operating the media-access control (MAC) protocol. Similarly, there are
potential benefits to be obtained by developing protocols that address
jointly the routing and MAC functions. Additional benefits can be
obtained by jointly addressing higher-layer functions along with routing
and MAC. Energy-aware protocols (from the perspective of either
energy-efficient or energy-constrained operation) are of critical
importance in many ad hoc scenarios. Such energy-aware operation can
span multiple layers, e.g., by addressing trade-offs between energy used
for RF transmission and for signal processing.
It is the goal of this special issue to reflect the latest in the state
of the art in ad hoc networks by examining all aspects of ad hoc network
design and control, including the dependencies between various network
functions and the potential benefits that can be gained by cross-layer
design. We are interested in papers on fundamental performance limits,
but more importantly on algorithm design and performance, system
implementations, etc.
We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished
contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc networking. Possible
topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Physical layer issues in ad hoc networks
* Media Access Control (MAC) techniques
* Self-organizing architectures and protocols
* Routing protocols
* Cross-layer protocol design
* Mobility management
* Protocols for mobile applications
* Transport-layer issues
* Signal-processing issues in ad hoc networks
* Integration with wired networks
* Applications
* Energy-aware protocols
* Security in ad hoc networks
* Capacity and scheduling
* Node implementation
* Effects on existing protocols
* Quality of service
* Broadcasting and multicasting
* Multimedia and traffic integration
* Experiments and testbeds
* Error-control schemes
* Synchronization and scheduling
* Scalability
* Performance analysis and simulation
* Properties of antennas
* Optimization methods
* Fundamental limits in ad hoc networks
All papers on any of the above topics must include a definite and strong
connection to ad hoc networks. Please contact Jeffrey Wieselthier at
wieselthier(a)itd.nrl.navy.mil if there are any questions about the
suitability of the paper for this special issue.
Prospective authors should prepare their manuscripts in accordance with
the IEEE J-SAC format described in the Information for Authors at the
J-SAC website. All papers should be submitted in pdf format via email
to Jeffrey Wieselthier at wieselthier(a)itd.nrl.navy.mil according to the
following timetable:

OVERVIEW
The nature of the wireless Internet will be different from simply accessing
the Internet wirelessly. Users with handheld wireless devices, being mostly
mobile, have different needs, motivations and capabilities from wired
users. Mobile services are mobile/wireless computing applications and
services that can be either pushed to user's handheld wireless devices
(push mobile services) or downloaded and installed, over the air, on
handheld wireless devices (pull mobile services). The explosive growth of
the handheld wireless devices market, however, is stimulating the computing
research community to clone almost any technology developed for desktop
networked computers to handheld wireless devices connected to a wireless
network. Wireless networks are, however, unreliable and suffer from low
bandwidth and have a greater tendency for network errors. In addition,
wireless connections can be lost or degraded by mobility. As a result,
future intelligent mobile services must be designed from the ground up by
taking fully into account the new design dimensions made accessible by the
new technologies. This emerging field poses new challenges to the research
community such as faster time-to-market, quality of wireless information,
security concerns, and others.
The aim of this special issue is to present most recent research findings
on mobile services. We are seeking papers that are original, unpublished
and not currently under review by workshops, conferences, or other journals.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to the following:
* Novel mobile services and applications
* Pull and push mobile services
* Analysis and design of mobile services
* Security and privacy issues in mobile services
* Location-dependent mobile services
* Content personalization
* Discovery protocols for mobile services
* Databases for mobile services
* XML for mobile services
* Middleware for mobile services
* Agents for mobile services
* Location and data management

Subject: CFP: Proxy Support for Streaming on the Internet
Date: Mon, 04 Aug 2003 21:35:49 -0300
From: Nelson Fonseca <nfonseca(a)ic.unicamp.br>
To: itc(a)comsoc.org, csim(a)comsoc.org, multicomm(a)comsoc.org
*Call for Papers IEEE Communications Magazine***
*Feture Topic on Proxy Support for Streaming on the Internet*
Recent technological advances have led to a substantial interest in
Internet streaming issues. The reasons for this increased interest are
many. Broadband connectivity to home users is now available via
technologies such as Cable modems and DSL. Commercial organizations
have deployed global content distribution networks that
allow streaming of content from edge servers, alleviating many of the
drawbacks of streaming data over best-effort networks. Despite hurdles
in the deployment of IP multicast, application-level multicast of
content permits scalable delivery of high bandwidth content to a large
number of users.
These exciting technological advances have raised a number of
interesting research questions. How can edge servers (proxies) be
employed for
scaling thedelivery of popular streaming content to very large numbers
of users?
Can peer-to-peer streaming be used to alleviate the load on popular
servers and proxies? How can streaming content be delivered
effectively to small devices such as PDAs and cell phones? How can
techniques such as multi-path streaming be used to reduce packet loss
How feasible is it to use TCP for streaming content?
The Feature issue on "Proxy Support for Streaming in the
Internetis" is devoted to these emerging issues in Internet streaming.
*Topics of interest:*
* Scalable video delivery
* Peer to peer streaming
* Multi-path streaming
* TCP streaming
* Edge servers and content delivery networks for streaming

CALL FOR PAPERS
WWAN 2004
International Workshop on Wireless Ad Hoc Networking
http://www.lifl.fr/RD2P/WWAN2004
to be held in conjunction with
The 24th International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems
(ICDCS-2004)
Tokyo, Japan, March 23-26, 2004
http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/icdcs04
http://www.icdcs2004.org
Wireless networks and mobile computing research has until recently
concentrated on single-hop networks (network nodes communicating
directly to a fixed infrastructure), such as cellular or satellite
systems. Ad hoc networking covers multi-hop scenarios (network nodes
communicating via other network nodes) such as conference, hospital,
battlefield, rescue, monitoring scenarios. Wireless ad-hoc networks
are formed by a set of hosts that communicate with each other over a
wireless channel. Each node has the ability to communicate directly
with another node in its physical neighborhood. They operate in a
self-organized and decentralized manner and message communication
takes place via multi-hop spreading. A packet is sent to its target
node through a set of intermediate nodes that act as
routers. Particular ad hoc network systems include packet radio
networks, sensor networks, personal communication systems, rooftop
networks, and wireless local area networks.
This workshop covers the area of ad hoc networking, from physical
issues up to applications aspects. In particular, it will cover
physical, data link, network and transport layers, as well as
applications, security, simulation and power management issues in
sensor, local area, personal, and mobile ad hoc networks. It is the
goal of this workshop to review ad hoc protocols and models and to
reflect the latest in the state of the art in ad hoc networks. It
seeks to provide up to date information on research and development
activities in rapidly growing area of ad hoc networks.
Topics of Interest
We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished
contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc
networking. Possible topics of interest include, but are not limited
to:
- Applications and history of ad hoc networks,
- Physical layer of ad hoc networks,
- Pervasive and wearable computing,
- IEEE 801.11 and Bluetooth based medium access control,
- Methods and tools for ad hoc networks simulation,
- Analytical, mobility and validation models for ad hoc networks,
- Hybrid networks and wireless internet,
- Security in ad hoc networks,
- Data management issues, query processing, data delivery,
- Routing, broadcasting and multicasting in ad hoc networks,
- Energy-efficient protocols for ad hoc networks,
- Quality of service in medium access control and routing,
- Topology construction and maintenance in ad hoc networks.
Paper Submission
Submit a full paper of about 6 pages (IEEE Computer Society
proceedings Manuscripts: two column, single-spaced), including figures
and references, using 10 font size, and number each page. Accepted
papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press, as
proceedings of the ICDCS'2004 workshops. You can use the IEEE Computer
Society Press Proceedings Author Guidelines
