User cooperation can take many forms, including the physical layer cooperative communications, the link layer cooperative and cognitive medium access, the network layer cooperative routing and load balancing, the collaborative end-to-end congestion control, and the cooperative peer-to-peer services, etc. The development and optimization of cooperation technologies requires inter-disciplinary efforts, from advanced signal processing and communication to network protocol design and optimization. It also sparks theoretical breakthroughs in topology control, nonlinear optimization, signal processing and complex networks, and stimulates practical advances in mobile communications and networking technologies, devices and platforms. This special issue is to disseminate the state-of-the-art results in this fast-moving research area, and to bring together experts from different disciplines, with the goal of fostering interactions among them to promote further research interests and activities to develop new user cooperation technologies for wireless networks. IJARAS introduces a problem, which implies a research direction---a thesis. The truth about this statement is drastically reverberating through several domains, and in so doing several seemingly unrelated research domains such as cross-layer adaptation for mobile devices and business process re-engineering can be regarded as special cases of a larger theory of systems. This vision paves the way to cross-fertilization; and through that, IJARAS aims at becoming a powerful tool to steer novel ideas and inject new research directions in this area. The network resources in such densely connected networks can become very much scarce especially when they are interconnected; furthermore, emerging applications such as peer-to-peer and streaming applications are typically oblivious to the complex structure of underlying networks and can easily abuse the scarce resources. Additionally, energy saving can become a key factor in network design. In wireline networks, proposals such as application-layer traffic optimization have become well-known potential solutions to addressing similar challenges; however, these approaches are no longer sufficient to address the more fundamental technical challenges in densely connected networks. The goal of this workshop is to provide a dedicated forum and community for researchers and engineers to share the state-of-the-art innovations and developments on the emerging densely connected networks. In particular, the workshop will focus on technical challenges in and emerging architecture for densely connected networks where a significantly large number of tethered and mobile devices are connected and on top of which applications unaware of the complexity of underlying networks try to compete for the resources in an uncooperative fashion. The workshop seeks submissions in the general areas of networking, content management, systems and applications that relate to dense networks. Topics include, but are not limited to: * Network architecture and its evolution of densely connected networks * Content dissemination via dense connectivity * Statistics, measurement, and evaluations of application-specific resource usage * Cooperative mechanisms via explicit or implicit communications * Caching mechanisms and system design in content dissemination for densely connected networks * Incentive models and dynamics of cooperation * Demonstration, prototype, deployment of cooperative frameworks * Performance measurement of cooperative network design * Network design that encourages cooperation and optimizes resource usage * Joint optimization for network and applications * Energy saving in densely connected networks Guidelines for Submission Submitted papers must represent original material that is not currently under review in any other conference or journal, and has not been previously published. The paper should be used as the basis for a 20 - 30 minute workshop presentation. Manuscripts should be written in English conforming to the IEEE standard conference format (8.5" x 11", Two-Column) and not exceed 5 pages in length. Submission of papers should be regarded as a commitment such that, if accepted, at least one author of the paper will register and attend the conference; otherwise it will be removed from the IEEE Digital Library after the conference. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks and the Internet of Your Things. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today. There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models, usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness, availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust. Scope of the submission We seek original contributions which are aimed at finding solutions to the problems that are outlined above towards realization of a Personalized Network. We have identified the following major topics under which we try to categorize the submissions. Personalized Networks is a concrete vision of the future networks, yet very current, in the field of communications. It attracts researchers from both wired and wireless domains. This workshop is an ideal platform to share a vision of where we are heading, interact, and strongly advocate an exciting new avenue for researchers and practitioners in the field of communication. Further, the final program would consist of carefully selected - with at least three peer reviews - and high quality submissions with a large emphasis on new ideas rather than incremental contributions to the field. Multiplayer networked games, which enable hundreds of thousands of players to simultaneously interact with each other, are now widely used not just for entertainments, but also for socializing, business, commerce, scientific experimentation, and many other practical purposes. The NPD Group reports that 59% of total US population (ages 2 years old and higher) play games, with 56% of them doing so online, leading to almost one third of the population playing online games, while DFC Intelligence forecasts the total number of gamers in the twenty leading online game countries to increase 51% by 2011 compared to 2006. The statistics for mobile gaming are equally impressive: it is estimated that 78.6 million people in the U.S. alone played mobile games in 2009, and downloads of mobile games increased tenfold compared to 2003. Literally millions of people spend their time and money in game worlds such as World of Warcraft, which now hosts more than 12 million subscribers with a peak of 500,000 players online at a given time, or Entropia Universe, which holds the number 1 and number 2 record for the most expensive “virtual” real estate sold for real money, each over US$300,000 per virtual property. As these online games become more popular and significant contributors to Internet traffic, research needs to be devoted to manage and support the emerging massiveness, its traffic on the network, and the users’ quality of experience. In this special issue, we focus on multiplayer games and cover scientific, engineering, and research topics in systems and networking support to enable such games. Submissions are solicited on all aspects of networked games, including (but not limited to): - Scalability, cloud support, client-server, and P2P system architectures - Efficient message distribution and network protocol design - Latency issues and lag compensation techniques - Network traffic modeling, measurement, and impact on network infrastructure - System benchmarking, performance evaluation, and provisioning - Operating system enhancements, service platforms, and middleware - Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming (MMOG) - Multiplayer usability and user behavior studies - Personal communications and conferencing in games - Mobile games, resource-constrained systems, and context-based adaptation - Networks of sensors, actuators, and haptics for games - Quality of service, quality of experience, and content adaptation - Dynamic and user-generated content authoring and management - Content creation: non-linear storytelling, object capturing, algorithmic creation - Security, authentication, accounting, and digital rights management - Cheat detection and prevention - Social networking in multiplayer games ---- Submission Instructions ---- Authors must follow the formatting and submission instructions of MMSJ at http://www.springer.com/computer/information+systems+and+applications/journ… and follow the "Submit Online" link on that page.
