(Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message) C A L L F O R P A P E R S ============================= Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) http://www.elsevier.com/locate/future Special Issue on "Management of Cloud Systems" The vision of Cloud computing is becoming a reality because of the recent advances in several significant computer and communications research areas, spanning from grid/virtualization/utility computing to Web 2.0 and Service Oriented Computing (SOC). At the current stage, after the initial hype of enthusiasm, several ongoing research efforts are deeply focusing on the open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to enable and boost a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite several recent provisioning of Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions can withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services de/activation and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The mission of this Special Issue is to put on the foreground all the above issues and to disseminate the latest research result in this emergent research area, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in management of Cloud systems. Along that direction, this special issue will collect a mix of extended and updated versions of papers recently presented at the international Workshop on Management of Cloud Systems (MoCS 2011), and of other papers submitted from this open call. In particular, all the authors of papers accepted for inclusion in the MoCS’11 proceedings are invited to submit extended versions of their workshop papers; in addition, we are asking for high-quality papers (from open call) reporting original research results. Contributions should present practical experiences of system design/prototy- ping/deployment related to topics that include, but are not limited to: * Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable, cost- effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers; * New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade-offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security; * New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the host level and within/between data centers (intra-/inter-domain); * Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization, specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and private Clouds; * Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations, and measurement studies; * Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings. The understanding of these issues becomes even more demanding due to non-uniform spectrum allocation, various radio resource management policies, economic concerns, the scarcity of radio resources, the inherent transmission impairments of wireless links and user mobility. The variety of access technologies offer users a great deal of flexibility to connect to the Internet. Multi-homing and mobility are becoming the focal point in protocol design. Mobility support allows users to be constantly connected, even when they are on the go. Multi-homing utilizes resources from the available interfaces in an efficient manner. Depending on the access technology associated with each interface, a mobile host can be connected to the Internet by an infrastructure network or through an ad-hoc network. Many protocols have been proposed for mobility and multi-homing support. Mobile IP, vertical handover and cross-layer design are mainly proposed for mobility in infrastructure-based networks. Multipath TCP, Stream Control Transmission Protocol, Multiple Care-of-Address registration, Level 3 Multi-homing Shim Protocol for IPv6 are solutions for multi-homing. Routing protocols are the major means to provide mobility in ad-hoc networks. In designing protocols for the future Internet, we will need to take into account not only mobility and multi-homing requirements, but also their potential impact on quality of service, resiliency and security of the communications. The workshop is an opportunity for researchers working on multi-homing and/or mobility for the future Internet to present scientific results, exchange experiences and highlight future directions. Although significant advances have been achieved over the last decades in several fields of science and engineering, and especially in the areas of distributed computing, sensing, data collection and internet-connection of large scale object networks, it is mainly the coordination and tight link between computational, virtual and physical resources that will drive the potential of having a pervasive effect in the citizens everyday life, satisfying various needs and also creating new opportunities for the introduction of services that will enhance the Quality of Life of the society as a whole. Research advances in cyber-physical systems promise to transform our world with systems that will far exceed those of today in terms of: effectiveness, adaptability, autonomicity, energy efficiency, precision, reliability, safety, usability, scalability, stability and user-centric applicability. Moreover, recently the Sensor Web concept came into foreground, aiming at combining distributed sensing with the ubiquitous connectivity and accessibility of the web, therefore facilitating the close interaction of digital world with physical world. Cyber-physical systems find direct applicability in a wide range of areas and disciplines, including for instance (but not limited to): a) Smart Grid technologies: that aim at facilitating a reliable and efficient delivery of electricity to consumers using two-way digital communications and security technologies, which allows utility providers and consumers to constantly monitor and control the delivery network as well as electricity consumption for the purpose of energy saving, cost reduction, and reliability enhancement; b) Wireless sensing, monitoring and networking: to enable distributed monitoring systems of numerous smart sensors and actuators, mobile devices, RFIDs, robots etc., which revolutionize a variety of application areas with unprecedented density, fidelity, and scalability of environment instrumentation; c) Vehicular cyber-physical systems and intelligent transportation systems: that integrate computing, communication, and storage capabilities with monitoring and control of vehicles in the physical world to deal with the grand challenges of safe, green, and efficient transportation. The technical challenges are significant, and of high research and practical importance, mainly stemming from the fact that traditionally different groups of scientists deal with this setting without much interaction, using disjoint sets of techniques. Towards merging the two main and different features of those systems, that of information-centric character and node-centric physical world connectivity, well-defined analytical models, methodologies and experimental validations are required of how to build such systems capable of coping with the entire chain of operations and orchestrating the various parts together in a flexible, efficient and economic way. These nodes are deeply embedded into the physical surroundings, and gather and process information such as temperature, humidity, light characteristics, seismic activities or images and sound samples from the physical world. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments and prototypic implementations are still not commonplace. However, experiences gained in such deployments are crucial for the sensor network research community. These results are needed to refine assumptions made when designing hardware, software, protocols and mechanisms for sensor networks.
