The World is increasingly experiencing a strong need for energy consumption reduction and a need for efficient use of scarce natural resources. Official studies report that buildings account for the largest portion of World's energy expenditure and have the fastest growth rate. Clearly, energy saving strategies that target energy use in buildings and surroundings can have a major impact worldwide, driving the current energy market toward self-sufficiency and self-sustainability. This calls for effective techniques and methods that enable accurate carbon foot printing, monitoring and control of appliance activity, energy auditing and management in buildings and surroundings and the generation of energy awareness. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) plays a key role in enabling energy-saving systems in buildings and surrounding spaces by providing a reliable, cost-effective and extensible solution that can be placed in existing as well as new structures and be controlled via the Internet. In fact, WSNs allow the monitoring of the energy consumption in near-real time and, as such, they are an essential tool in the control loop that will be used in future structures for the generation and usage of diverse types of energy. Following the success of the past edition of the workshop, BuildSys 2010 focuses on the intersection between WSNs and energy in buildings by merging experts in the WSN domain and experts in the Building/Energy community in order to identify innovative solutions which achieve the broad goal of energy-reduction. The workshop welcomes sensor network-based techniques and applications that can clearly demonstrate how to: * Increase energy awareness and reduce consumption by leveraging on sensing systems/social networking/mobile phones, novel visualization and other forms of media to convey relevant information to users; * Systems that can influence a change of building occupant behaviour towards a more parsimonious usage of electricity, gas, heating, water, etc.; * Monitor and actuate appliances in residential and industrial settings (e.g. data centres, HVAC, etc.) * Monitor and control of alternative energy sources aiming at an increase of production efficacy; * Model and simulate heating cooling lighting, ventilation, water usage and other energy flows in buildings and surrounding spaces through the combination of real data from sensors and popular energy simulation tools such as Energy Plus and TrnSys; * Create innovative tools to model and visualize energy expenditure and production (from, e.g., solar panels, wind turbines); * Integrate sensor-based systems to improve grid operation and energy distribution (electricity, gas, water); Particular emphasis will also be given to: * Real evaluation of energy-saving techniques and case studies that demonstrate a decrease of energy expenditure in real scenarios; * Design of innovative architectures that are capable of reducing energy consumption and improve energy use efficiency; * Accurate case studies and issues experienced current energy systems and how sensor networks can improve the state of the art in building energy management; * Sensor systems for the identification of appliances in industrial and home environments, which can be used to estimate the energy usage/production model and to predict future demands; * Innovative Sensor Network-assisted building monitoring systems (BMS); * Integration of WSNs and wired sensor systems (e.g., Powerline, exing BMS) for the energy management in buildings. These networks show promise to support the development of always-on services in next generation mobile systems. Initially, it was natural to inherit the traditional layered network architecture in designing systems and services. More recently, the need to support high performance applications while coping with the limited node capabilities highlights the necessity of cross-layer design in these networks. Cross-layer design offers new opportunities to exploit the potential offered by joint optimization of design parameters, satisfy QoS requirements, among others, that cannot be addressed by traditional architecture in a satisfactory manner. However, at the current time, we lack a clear understanding of the interactions among the layers, and a comprehensive framework for cross-layer design in the network stack. Scope of Contributions The objective of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions, tutorials, and position papers that address the key aspects of cross layer design in ad hoc and sensor networks. Original manuscripts describing completed and unpublished work not currently under review by any other journal, magazine, or conference are solicited. Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) have emerged to address this challenge by offering infrastructure and mechanisms to deliver content and services in a scalable manner. Nevertheless, modern applications do not just perform retrieval or access operation on content, but also create, modify and manage content, and actively place them at appropriate locations. To deal with such new requirements, more general Content Networks (CNs) are being introduced. Design and implementation of robust and efficient CNs in large-scale computing environments demand the use of emerging paradigms and software technologies, such as Peer-to-Peer, Grid and the latest IT trend-Cloud computing. The scope of this symposium covers concepts and all enabling technologies of wireless pervasive computing. This includes a huge variety of topics ranging from wireless communications and networking to services and applications of pervasive computing. A series of panel and tutorials will also seek to inform and invoke interaction among researchers. Prospective authors are invited to submit original technical papers for presentation at the conference. Full papers have to be submitted via EDAS. The maximum number of pages allowed is six. Proposals for tutorials are also solicited, addressing emerging topics that relate to technical issues in wireless communications and applications. To provide the required guarantees for applications in these environments, a fundamental understanding of the environmental impacts on communication as well as the physical layer affects on higher layer protocols is required. Moreover, cross- layer solutions that address the challenges in these environments by incorporating the interactions between the environment and communication performance are beneficial. Consequently, environment- aware solutions that adapt to the changes in their environment can be realized. This special issue is dedicated to recent advances in communication and networking in challenged environments. Papers describing applications, protocols, analysis models, evaluation methods, and experimental studies are solicited. Applicants should be far enough into their PhD to have a concrete proposal, and have initially outlined the salient issues and proposed research methodology. Applicants should not be planning to submit their PhD thesis or dissertation for at least six months after the DC, so that any advice or input may still be incorporated into the doctoral work. The DC will be a one-day, seminar-style event, consisting of short presentations followed by roundtable discussion. Time will be allotted to each student not only for the presentation, but also for careful, in-depth consideration and discussion amongst the panelists and DC participants. In order to provide such individual attention, the number of accepted DC participants will be limited to twelve. SUBMISSIONS Topic scope is the same as that listed in the SenSys call for papers. DC submissions should consist of a single PDF document using the SenSys paper template. The document should contain the following: 1) Research summary (3 pages) describing the work in progress, and including a 100 word abstract. Things to consider for inclusion in the research summary might be: the expected contribution to the field of sensor networking; the original idea or thesis statement; the problem domain and the specific problem addressed; a brief overview of related work; the methodological approach; research carried out and results so far. 2) Student biographical sketch, including the names and affiliations of the research advisor(s), and expected date of dissertation submission. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks and the Internet of Your Things. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today. There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models, usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness, availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust. Scope of the submission We seek original contributions which are aimed at finding solutions to the problems that are outlined above towards realization of a Personalized Network. We have identified the following major topics under which we try to categorize the submissions. Students submitting to the MobiCom 2010 Poster Session can opt to have their posters considered also by the SRC committee. Selected competitors will receive up to $500 USD for their conference travel, depending on need, and will earn a chance to compete in the SRC Grand Finals. The winners will be recognized at the Annual ACM Awards Banquet. Competitors should be prepared to attend the poster session and, if selected for further competition, give a short talk about their research projects. Winners of the MobiCom 2010 SRC will be announced at the conference. The Student Research Competition is open to graduate and undergraduate students whose submissions are accepted by the SRC committee. To be considered, complete a submission to the Poster Session and indicate that you would like to participate in the SRC by adding “[SRC]” in the subject line. Current ACM student membership and student status as of the submission deadline are required for the lead student.
