Of particular interest to this special issue are papers on webgraph analysis of networks, social network applications in security and privacy of communication networks, economic and game theoretic approaches to communications and networks, exploring centrality measures such as clustering and betweenness, studies of emergence properties of real networks such as self-organized criticality, algorithms for navigating peer-peer networks and mapping topology, architectures and activities of networks in general, modeling the spread of viral epidemics, analyzing chaotic behavior, methods for network control and optimization with predictable outcomes, and describing tools and techniques used in the design and analysis of networks. SCOPE: This special issue will highlight the state-of-the-art research in network science. We welcome tutorial type papers as well as papers describing new research activities. All papers should be understandable and appealing to the general audience. Authors are requested to keep in mind that IEEE Network is a magazine. Submitted papers should contain a substantial amount of tutorial content and minimal mathematics. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Webgraph analysis of networks * Resilience and vulnerabilities of network infrastructures * Emergence properties of real networks * Peer-to-peer network topologies * Epidemic spread models * Tools and techniques to design and analyze networks * Inference and analysis of social networks * Social network applications to security and privacy in communication networks * Game theoretic approaches to communications and networks MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION: Articles should be written in a style comprehensible and appealing to readers outside the specialty of the article. Authors must follow the IEEE Network magazine guidelines regarding the manuscript and its format. However, MobiSys is not an appropriate forum for marketing or sales presentations. Resource-Constrained Networks (RCNs) include a wide variety of networks in which resources – such as processing, communication, and energy – are limited. Examples of RCNs include ad hoc networks, sensor networks, mobile networks, and pervasive systems. In RCNs, the tradeoff between data quality and resource usage (especially energy) is a major concern. In this case, Localized Algorithms and Information Fusion are particularly interesting for RCNs, since the development of efficient practical solutions and algorithms is possibly the most challenging task for such networks. On one hand, Localized Algorithms are special distributed algorithms in which only a subset of nodes partakes in the network tasks, such as data acquisition, processing, and communication. On the other hand, Information Fusion is often used for improving the quality of data being transmitted in these networks. Thus, Localized Algorithms for Information Fusion must deal with the challenge of working with partial views, or incomplete data, to provide accurate results at reduced cost. This special issue will cover a broad range of aspects of Localized Algorithms for Information Fusion in RCNs, including ad hoc and mobile networks, wireless sensor networks, networked pervasive systems. We seek technical papers describing original (previously unpublished in any form or forum) ideas, groundbreaking results, and quantified system experiences. We especially encourage submissions that highlight practical deployments of RCNs, new application domains, and critical surveys of the state-of-the-art. Topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited to: - In-network query processing and data storage; - Localized signal processing; - Localized estimation, reasoning, and inference; - Localized information fusion for time synchronization; - Localized information fusion for location discovery and location-based services; - Localized information fusion for reliability and fault tolerance; - Localized information fusion for communication protocols at all layers (MAC, scheduling, routing, transport, and application); - Quality-aware resource management using localized information fusion; - Mobility control and coordination; - Optimization techniques for localized information fusion in homogeneous and heterogeneous RCNs; - Localized information fusion for data compression and distributed source coding. The relevance of this paradigm ranges from IPTV or video-on-demand systems for distributing and sharing professional TV to user-generated content over the web. To obtain a pleasurable user experience far more aspects than QoS have to be taken into account. Major challenges in this context include the identification of relevant UX factors and the quantification of their influence on Quality of Experience (QoE). In particular, context awareness and assessment of users? expectations play an essential role. This is further justified by the emergence of new multimedia enhancement techniques, notably 3DTV and Free Viewpoint. Future Internet architectures under current research are also promising on the possibility to accommodate protocols and policies that take QoE issues into consideration. Consequently, acquired knowledge on the context and on identified parameters affecting users? experience could be used to improve media delivery. * Workshop objectives The objective of this workshop consists in collecting and developing knowledge on the following three main topics defining the session structure of the workshop: - Context awareness for multimedia applications (video on demand on the web, content sharing, user-generated & professional content, IPTV, social aspects, sensors, energy efficiency) - Content and context aware quality measurements (user-generated & professional content, live & on demand) - Content and context aware interplay between media service/applications and network strategies. TwUC covers aspects of trust in ubiquitous computing environments. The aspects of context, privacy, reliability, usability and user experience related to ubiquitous computing environments represent the main topics of the workshop. Marc Weiser presented his vision of disappearing and ubiquitous computing more than 15 years ago. The big picture of the computer introduced into our environment was a big innovation and the starting point for various areas of research. In order to totally adopt the idea of ubiquitous computing several houses were build, equipped with technology and used as laboratory in order to find and test appliances that are useful and could be made available in our everyday life. Within the last years industry picked up the idea of integrating ubiquitous computing and already available products like remote controls for your house were developed and brought to the marked. In spite of many applications and projects in the area of ubiquitous and pervasive computing the success is still far away. One of the main reasons is the lack of acceptance of and confidence in this technology. Although researchers and industry are working in all of these areas a forum to elaborate security, reliability and privacy issues, that resolve in trustworthy interfaces and computing environments for people interacting within these ubiquitous environments is important. The user experience factor of trust thus becomes a crucial issue for the success of a UbiComp application. Please feel free to distribute it to those who might be interested. ============== CALL FOR PAPERS NPSec 2010 6th Workshop on Secure Network Protocols Kyoto, Japan, October 5, 2010 In conjunction with ICNP 2010 (Kyoto, Japan, October 5-8, 2010) http://webgaki.inf.shizuoka.ac.jp/~npsec2010/ === Scope === The 6th workshop on Secure Network Protocols (NPSec2010) is a one-day event held in conjunction with the 18th IEEE International Conference on Network Protocols (ICNP 2010). NPSec2010 focuses on two general areas. The first focus is on the development and analysis of secure or hardened protocols for the operation (establishment and maintenance) of network infrastructure, including such targets as secure multidomain, ad hoc, sensor or overlay networks, or other related target areas. This can include new protocols, enhancements to existing protocols, protocol analysis, and new attacks on existing protocols. The second focus is on employing such secure network protocols to create or enhance network applications. Examples include collaborative firewalls, incentive strategies for multiparty networks, and deployment strategies to enable secure applications. NPSec 2010 particularly welcomes new ideas on security in the context of future Internet design, such as architectural considerations for future Internet security and new primitives for supporting secure network protocol and application design. The topic “Future Internet” is widely attracting attention. Triggered by FIND/GENI activities of the NSF both the EU in the 7th Framework as well as the BMBF in its IT strategy for 2020 have addressed this topic. Still, discussions mainly take place in the research environment and have to get carried into the industry. The workshop topic covers a wide area. Topics range from the incremental improvement of today's Internet to a complete fresh start (clean slate approach). Aim of this GI/ITG KuVS (Kommunikation und Verteilte Systeme) workshop on Future Internet is to give scientists the opportunity to present their work and ideas in this area and strengthen cooperation. Papers must be unpublished and must not be submitted for publication elsewhere. All papers will be reviewed by Technical Program Committee members and other experts active in the field to ensure high quality and relevance to the Symposium. The symposium will have a single track for regular papers and in addition, a separate interwoven track with short papers / posters. Paper length should be no more than 8 pages, double column, ACM style including tables and figures. An additional 2 pages is allowed but incurs an extra printing fee should the paper be accepted. Only PDF format is accepted. All accepted papers will appear in the Symposium proceedings published by ACM press. At least one of the authors of accepted papers must attend the symposium to present each paper.
