The first call for papers
The 10th International Conference on
Next Generation Wired/Wireless Advanced Networking
NEW2AN 2010
http://www.new2an.org/
August 23 - 25, 2010
St. Petersburg, Russia
CALL FOR PAPERS
About the Conference
Next-generation mobile networks will evolve out of existing wired and
wireless networks of different nature by means of convergence, fusion
and mutual penetration; next-generation multimedia services in turn pose
new requirements and challenges on treatment of traffic within
communication systems – a certain degree of multilayer co-operation has
to be achieved. This forms a framework on harmonization of results
obtained separately in different areas of network research like network
performance evaluation, architecture and protocol design, and low layer
network design. The conference goal is in the identification,
investigation and integration of new algorithms, approaches,
architectures, methods and mechanisms to enable proper and efficient
operation of a next-generation IP-based wireless network. Therefore,
wireless networks and their interaction with wired networks shall be
widely examined and addressed throughout the conference.
The history of NEW2AN dates back to 1993, today it is an established
conference featured by proceedings published by Springer LNCS (approved)
and distinguished keynote speakers.
The NEW2AN 2010 will be held in St. Petersburg, Russia - the meeting
point of East and West. Through its stunning architecture and wonderful
art galleries and museums, among a number of other attractions, the
wealth of history of East and West can be seen and felt in this
beautiful city.
NEW2AN is supported by the Government of St.Petersburg and regarded as
very important part of scientific life of Russia.

The 2nd ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Planet-scale Measurements (HotPlanet)
co-located with ACM MobiSys '10, San Francisco, CA, USA
June 15, 2010
http://www.hotplanetconf.net/10/
Important dates:
Submission deadline: March 7, 2010
Authors notification: April 18, 2010
Camera ready: May 7, 2010
Workshop date: June 15, 2010
It is well-known that successfully researching, designing and building
new mobile, ad hoc, mesh and opportunistic networking systems and
algorithms requires access to large-scale data on human mobility,
encounter, and social network patterns. Unfortunately, the wireless and
mobile research communities lack such data, with typical human contact
traces consisting of less than 100 nodes. We believe that large-scale
datasets are important, not only in communication network design, but
also for fundamental study in other academic disciplines, e.g.,
epidemiology, urban planning, and social science. Complex networks
research has flourished since 1989 when the first large Internet (and
later WWW) datasets became available. To achieve similar improvements in
mobile networking and related fields, large-scale, and ideally
planet-scale, datasets must be collected and made available.
Following a successful introductory event at ACM MobiSys 2009, this
year's workshop will challenge the community to collect large-scale
human mobility traces. Our aim is to highlight the issues in collecting
data on a planet-wide scale, so that the community can help develop
mechanisms to collect, share and analyse such data.
Topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to:
- Motivating applications for large-scale human mobility data collection,
especially from other disciplines, e.g., epidemiology, sociology
- Methods for collecting large-scale human mobility datasets
- New analyses and applications of large-scale human mobility datasets,
e.g., human dynamics characterisation and modelling
- Planet-scale data collection infrastructures
- Testbed federation for planet-scale data collection
- Incentive models for encouraging users and businesses to collect and
contribute data on a planet-wide scale
- Enabling security, privacy and anonymity for large-scale data collection
- Regulatory, legal and ethical issues in planet-wide data collection
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
All submitted papers will be carefully evaluated based on their
originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of
expression. Accepted papers will be published by ACM and placed in the
ACM Digital Library. Submissions must be in English, no longer than 6
pages and in PDF format, and use the ACM templates
<http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates>. All fonts
must be embedded within the PDF and be Type 1 (scalable).
In order to allow papers to appear in the ACM Digital Library, authors
of accepted papers will be asked to submit, together with their
camera-ready, an ACM proceedings copyright transfer form
<http://www.acm.org/publications/copyright_form>. Failure to send the
camera-ready and copyright transfer on time will prevent the publication
of the paper and its inclusion in the ACM Digital Library.
Papers should be submitted through EDAS at <http://edas.info/N8637>.

**** NOSSDAV 2010 CALL FOR PAPERS ****
NOSSDAV 2010
Amsterdam, The Netherlands. June 2-4, 2010
http://nsl.cs.sfu.ca/nossdav10/
NOSSDAV 2010 is the 20th anniversary of SIGMM's leading workshop on
network and operating systems support for digital audio and video. The
workshop, hosted by the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) and the
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), will continue to focus on emerging
research topics, controversial ideas, and future research directions
in the area of multimedia systems research.
As in previous years, we will maintain the focused single-track format
a setting that stimulates lively discussions among the senior and
junior participants.
NOSSDAV encourages experimental research based on real systems and
real data sets. Public availability of the source code and data sets
discussed in papers presented at NOSSDAV is highly encouraged.
For NOSSDAV 2010, we will accept papers on a broad ranges of topics
related to the transmission and presentation of digital audio/video
objects. We are particularly interested in soliciting articles that
discuss systems-level support for distributed social networking, as
well as papers that focus on local dispatching and performance aspects
of multi-core processors. Other topics of interest include (but are
not restricted to):
* OS, middleware and network support
* Overlay networks
* Media streaming, distribution and storage support
* Web 2.0 systems and social networks
* Media sensor and ad hoc networks / Embedded systems
* Multicore architecture support
* Wireless and mobile multimedia systems / Network processor support
* Networked GPU's, graphics and virtual environments
* Networked games / Real-time immersive systems

Special Issue on Internet of Things: the "Next Big Thing" in
Communications?
*******************************************************************
Call for Papers
Internet of Things: the "Next Big Thing" in Communications?
Special Issue of IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine
In the last few years, a stimulating idea is fast emerging in the
wireless scenario: the pervasive presence around us of a variety of
"things" or "objects", such as devices, sensors, actuators, mobile
phones, which, through unique addressing schemes, are able to interact
with each other and cooperate with their neighboring "smart"
components to reach common goals. This novel paradigm, named "The
Internet of Things", continues on the path set by the concept of smart
environment and paves the way to the deployment of numerous
applications with a significant impact on many fields of future
every-day life. In this context, logistics, Intelligent Transportation
Systems, Business/Process management, assisted living, e-health are
only a few examples of possible application fields in which this novel
paradigm will play a leading role.
How to implement this novel paradigm and how effective its
introduction into citizens' every-day life is, still remains to be
investigated. Key objectives of any R&D activity in the field are:
efficient and effective wireless spectrum utilization, full
interoperability of "smarts" devices, their adaptation and autonomous
behavior, as well as trust, privacy, and security guarantees.
From a wireless communications and networking perspective, the
Internet of Things idea raises several challenging issues to address
and technological nodes to untie.
Which major technological innovations and developments are still
required to enable a level of "ambient intelligence", characterized by
the integration of wired and wireless "smart" components? Which
sustainable standards, technologies, global communication protocols,
and algorithms at the various layers of the system protocol stack
(from the physical to the application layer) shall be introduced with
the aim of allowing a vast amount of information to be shared amongst
things and people when wireless links and technologies are involved?
Which is the role of widely accepted wireless communications paradigms
for peer to peer communications, machine-to-machine communications,
and machine-to-network communications in a IoT perspective? Could the
use of middleware mechanisms represent a feasible and effective
solution to the problem of integrating Radio Frequency devices and
wireless sensors into a common IoT framework? Are the proposed trust,
privacy, and security models able to make people trust in these novel
technologies instead of being afraid of an external surveillance and,
more relevantly, are they still effective when involved "things"
communicate wirelessly?
An attempt to provide a partial answer to these and many other related
questions will form the main scope of the present special issue. More
specifically we are interested in the wireless communications and
networking aspects involved by the introduction of the Internet of
Things concept, and therefore solicit papers covering a variety of
topics including, but not limited to:
* Internet of Things infrastructures, communication systems, network
architectures
* Mobile Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks
* Network management, distributed processing (e.g. access,
scheduling, radio resource management, etc.), scalability, and
cooperation issues in integrated wired-wireless scenarios for the
Internet of Things
* Internet of Things enabling ubiquitous and wireless
technologies
* Security and privacy management for wirelessly communicating
"things" and users
* RFID technology and RFID middleware
* Electromagnetic aspects related to the Internet of Things
* Machine-to-machine and machine-to-network communications in the
presence of wireless links
* Inter-vehicle communications and seamless connectivity
* Location and tracking through navigation sensors
* Internet of Things applications in research projects
* Standardization and regulation (e.g. spectrum allocation and radio
frequency exposure protection) issues for the Internet of
Things
Submission of original contributions is solicited on the above topics
as well as others relevant to the "Internet of Things" concept.
All submissions should adhere to the style of IEEE Wireless
Communications Magazine. Guidelines for prospective authors can be
found on-line at

Second IEEE Workshop on
Interdisciplinary Research on E-health Services and Systems
IREHSS 2010
June 14, 2010
Montreal, QC Canada
In the last few years advances in wearable computing, bioengineering,
wireless sensors networks, mobile devices and wireless communications
have paved the way to new definitions of e-health systems, moving from
original telemedicine systems to the integration of existent specialized
medical technologies with pervasive technologies. However, even more
work on this area is needed to obtain significant results in improving the
Quality of Life of patients and reducing medical errors and costs. First of
all, a strict interaction and cooperation among medical specialists and
ICT experts is necessary to define correct requirements fore-health
systems. Then, in order to effectively design and deploy reliable E-health
systems, a strong cooperation among several diverse research areas of

ULC-WSN: Workshop on Ultra-Low-Cost Wireless Sensor Networks and their
Applications at the INSS'10
Website at http://www.duslab.de/ulc-wsn/
June, 2010
in conjunction with
7th International Conference in Networked Sensing Systems (INSS)
Kassel, Germany, June 15 - 18, 2010
organised by the Department of Distributed and Ubiquitous systems (DUS)
ToC:
* Topics and Introduction
* Workshop Format
* Desired Outcome
* Call for Papers
* Organisation
Topics and Introduction:
The wireless sensor network (WSN) community is approaching its 10th
birthday and still the killer application which will make these devices
ubiquitous has eluded researchers and developers. One approach which
will be investigated is that it is possible to create ingenious
applications using simple technology, and that these applications can
have a great impact because the technology is relatively simple.
Most of the WSN literature displays great applications based on
cutting-edge technology, but these applications are often prohibitively
expensive due to their nature. The status quo of a networked sensing
system has been based on high-cost nodes (>100 USD) and time and
effort-intensive development, all of which leads to highly functional
yet highly complex and expensive WSN applications. A new approach to the
field is the concept of ultra-low-cost wireless sensor networks (ULC
WSN) which would allow for applications of miniature ultra-low-cost
wireless sensor nodes (<20 USD) as well as low-cost rapid development.
These qualities come naturally at a price, which is low resources
available on the nodes. As any developer knows, the most expensive part
of any WSN application is the time-intensive development. Here again the
ULC WSN approach foresees low-cost light-weight rapid development (<2
hours), but at the cost of application complexity (comparable to a
restricted instruction set). Although low-cost sensor nodes and rapid
development environments exist, application scenarios for a combination
of both of them have not yet been explored.
This workshop will try to explore what can be done with WSN technology
designed with cost as the primary design factor. Recent developments
have created the basis for unprecedentedly affordable WSN development
tools which open new application spaces previously inaccessible due to
the prohibitive cost of development and technology. These scenarios will
be explored by encouraging participants to come up with applications
based on and enabled by ultra-low-cost wireless sensor network
technology. Participants will be asked to submit ideas for applications
which can be implemented quickly (15 minutes or less with a configurable
WSN platform) on a miniature simplistic ultra-low-cost wireless sensor
network.
Workshop Format:
The workshop will be divided into three distinct portions. In the
morning, the contributions to the workshop will be presented to the
group by the authors. This will be followed by a brief evaluation of the
contributions by the group and discussion based on the impact and
potential of the different ideas presented, as well as resources and
development effort required. After lunch, the Akiba platform will be
introduced to the participants as a basis for evaluating ultra-low-cost
WSN applications and a short tutorial will be given, followed by a
period of hands-on wireless sensor network rapid development examples
and tools. The participants will then be broken into groups, each with
the task of implementing one of the ideas presented in the participant
contributions.
Each implementation will be evaluated by all groups to ascertain if the
goal of the application could be accomplished by the developers with the
restricted resources and time frame. Finally, the groups will be brought
back together to share their experiences and for a discussion on the
plausibility of an ultra-low-cost wireless sensor network to close the
workshop.
Timetable:
* 09.00 - 09.30 Registration, welcome & introductions
* 09.30 - 12.45 Author presentations
* 12.45 - 02.00 Lunch Break
* 14.00 - 15.30 Akiba platform development tutorial
* 15.30 - 16.00 Coffee Break
* 16.00 - 17.30 Application implementation
* 17.30 - 18.00 Evaluation & wrap-up
Desired Outcome:
The desired outcome of this workshop is a concise statement on whether
or not something along the lines of an ultra-low-cost wireless sensor
network makes sense as a development tool. In order reach this point,
the scenario properties must be identified which allow or prevent the
use of an ULC WSN. The desired result will indicate under which
conditions an ULC WSN is appropriate, in which scenarios an ULC WSN will
be able to achieve satisfactory results, and which scenario parameters
are prohibitive of a low-cost, low-resource, low-complexity wireless
sensor networks.
Call for Papers, Selection Process and Publication:
Submissions are requested on the topic of ultra-low-cost wireless sensor
networks and their applications. Submissions should address the
questions of available platforms, potential for improvement in this
field, potential application areas, developers, users, innovations which
affect ULC WSN technology or any other ULC WSN related theme. Each
submission should contain an idea, recommendation or example of an
application of an ULC WSN. The papers should provide a method for
implementing the example in 15 minutes or less with an out-of-box ULC
WSN configurable platform and indicate a method for evaluating the
application. Implementational examples and ideas should be original,
though that is not a requirement for submission. The number of
participants is limited to 15 based on the submissions.
Papers should be submitted in IEEE Transaction format with a maximum of
four pages. Accepted papers will be published by the Technische
Universitaet Braunschweig as a technical report and on the Internet, as
well as on the workshop website. Depending on the outcome of the
workshop we will ask for a special submission to a journal (Personal and
Mobile Computing) on the topic. Participants will then be invited to
submit an extended version of their workshop contribution which includes
the experience gathered in the workshop as a journal submission. The
outcome of the workshop can also be presented at the INSS conference in
the main track as a short presentation.
Important dates are as follows:
* March 15, 2010: Paper submissions deadline
* April 15, 2010: Acceptance Notification
* June, 2010: Workshop (date will be posted)
The workshop organizers will select participants based on a review of
submitted position papers, taking into account scientific quality and
relation to the workshop topics. Submissions, questions comments and
feedback can be emailed to Dawud Gordon at gordon(a)ibr.cs.tu-bs.de.
