Journal of Computer Systems, Networks, and Communications
Special Issue on Lightweight Mobile and Wireless Systems: Technologies,
Architectures and Services
*******************************************************************
Call for Papers
Wireless communications are becoming increasingly pervasive, as the number
and diffusion of portable wireless-equipped devices is exponentially
increasing (ranging from cellular phones to handheld game consoles, from
personal digital assistant and personal navigation devices to still and
video cameras). This results into an unprecedented request for lightweight,
wireless communication devices with high usability and performance able to
support added-value services in a highly mobile environment - following the
user everywhere he goes (at work, at home, while traveling, in a classroom,
etc.). This scenario clearly demands significant upgrades to the existing
communication paradigm in terms of infrastructure, devices and services to
support the ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, ANY DEVICE philosophy.
This Special Issue aims to publish high quality research papers relating to
Mobile Lightweight Wireless Systems. Researchers working in these areas
worldwide are invited to contribute original and unpublished papers for
consideration in this Special Issue. Topics of interest include, but are not
limited to:
. Wireless communication systems (IEEE 802.11x, WiMAX, IEEE 802.15,
Personal Area Networks, Bluetooth, wireless USB, HiperLAN2)
. Cellular Networks (2.5G, 3G, 3G LTE, LTE-A)
. Ultra Wide Band
. Next Generation Networks
. Next generation lightweight devices (smart phones, PDAs)
. Available and emerging solutions for lightweight systems
. Internetworking and interoperability
. Protocol stack design (layering, cross-layering)
. Performance evaluation and optimization
. Service-Oriented architectures
. Cognitive radios and networks
. Seamless roaming
. Voice and Voice over IP
. Location services
. Emerging and next generation services
. Service provisioning
. Value-Added services
. Users' needs and requirements

CALL FOR PAPERS
GI/ITG Workshop on Energy-aware Systems and Methods
held in conjunction with
ARCS 2010 - Architecture of Computing Systems
February 22-23, 2010; Hannover, Germany
<http://www7.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/~dressler/fg-energie/2010/>
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Aims and scope
--------------
Energy is considered a critical or even the most critical resource in
many computing systems. Applications comprise a wide range of system
capabilities including cloud computing, mobile laptops or PDAs, as well
as cell phones, sensor networks, and deeply embedded devices. Thus, for
functional and ecological reasons energy awareness and energy-aware
operation are fundamental demands for any system. In recent years, a new
research domain was established as an interdisciplinary field among
different areas of computer science (e.g., operating systems and
computer networks) and electrical engineering (e.g., wireless
communication and chip design). Based on findings in the field of
energy-aware systems and methods, novel application scenarios can be
envisioned encompassing even stronger requirements on reliability,
resilience, lifetime, adaptability, and self-organization.
This workshop aims to provide a forum to discuss recent results in the
field of energy-awareness that is a cross-cutting concern in many areas
in systems research. Based on intensive discussions of energy-critical
issues in the different layers and the different approaches to
energy-aware system design, the participants will be able to study
energy-related problems from multiple perspectives and to look into the
complex interactions among those layers. We especially encourage PhD
students to participate, to share their ideas and findings, and to
network with other fellows working in the same field.
Topics of interest
------------------
Whereas the workshop mainly focuses on energy-aware systems and methods,
contributions are favored that span all the related fields of study.
This includes the following aspects:
- Operating system support
- Communication methods
- Protocol engineering
- Simulation techniques
- Cross-layer design of energy-aware systems
- Application and hardware support for energy-aware operation
Organization
------------
The workshop is organized as a follow-up to the successful “GI/ITG
Fachgespräch” on energy-aware systems and methods. Key organizers are
Prof. Dr. Frank Bellosa (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), PD Dr.
Falko Dressler (University of Erlangen), and Prof. Dr. Dirk Timmermann
(University of Rostock).
Important dates
---------------
• December 15, 2009: Paper submission deadline. Papers must be submitted
in PDF format.
• January 15, 2009: Notification of acceptance
• January 20, 2010: Final paper submission
• February 22/23, 2010: Workshop

The International Conference on Ambient Systems, Networks and
Technologies (ANT-2010) is a leading international conference which
provides an international forum for researchers, developers and
practitioners from academia, industry, and government to address
research challenges and to present and discuss research ideas,
developments and experiences related to the ambient systems
infrastructure, models, and technologies.
The general aim of ambient systems is to provide an environment
wherein computing devices exist anywhere and everywhere. In such
systems mobile and embedded computing devices form ad hoc collaboration
using different communication networks (e.g., wireless networks, RFID,
etc) in order to share and exchange information and provide services.
Ambient systems pose new research challenges due to the open and
unreliable nature of the environment and the complexity and
heterogeneity of the computing devices and the underlying communication
networks. These characteristics challenge traditional techniques and
demand new ways of approaching the problems related to the ambient
systems.

CFP: First International Workshop on Security and Privacy in Cloud
Computing
http://www.ece.iit.edu/~ubisec/workshop.htm
To be held in conjuction with IEEE International Conference on
Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS 2010)
Cloud computing has recently emerged as a new information technology
infrastructure. In cloud computing, information is permanently stored
in large data centers on the Internet and temporarily accessed and
cached on clients that include desktops and portable PCs, sensors,
etc. With the "cloud" as a metaphor for the Internet, cloud computing
promises to deliver massively scalable IT-enabled data, software, and
hardware capabilities as a service to external clients using Internet
technologies. Cloud computing has been envisioned as the key
technology to achieve economies of scale in the deployment and
operation of IT solutions.
Cloud computing has unique attributes that raise many security and
privacy challenges in areas such as data security, recovery, and
privacy, as well as legal issues in areas such as regulatory
compliance and auditing. In contrast to traditional enterprise IT
solutions, where the IT services are under proper physical, logical
and personnel controls, cloud computing moves the application software
and databases to the servers in large data centers on the Internet,
where the management of the data and services are not fully
trustworthy. When clients store their data on the server without
themselves possessing a copy of it, how the integrity of the data can
be ensured if the server is not fully trustworthy? Will encryption
solve the data confidentiality problem of sensitive data? How will
encryption affect dynamic data operations such as query, insertion,
modification, and deletion? Data in the cloud is typically in a shared
environment alongside data from other clients. How the data
segregation should be done, while data are stored, executed, and
transmitted? How the virtulized resources is being managed and secured
in the cloud? Due to the fundamental paradigm shift in cloud
computing, many security concerns have to be better understood,
unanticipated vulnerabilities identified, and viable solutions to
critical threats devised, before the wide deployment of cloud
computing techniques can take place. Topics of interests include (but
are not limited to) the following subject categories:
Secure management of virtualized cloud resources
Secure network architecture for cloud computing
Joint security and privacy aware cloud protocol design
Access control and key management
Trust and policy management in clouds
Identification and privacy in cloud
Remote data integrity protection
Secure computation outsourcing
Dynamic data operation security
Software and data segregation security
Failure detection and prediction
Secure data management within and across data centers
Availability, recovery and auditing
Secure wireless cloud
Both regular research papers and position papers that define new
problems in cloud computing security or provide visions and
clarifications of cloud computing security are solicited.
Additionally, short papers that describe work-in-progress ideas are
also welcome.
