INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
Special Issue on 'Advances in Multimedia Communications'
--------------------------------------------------------------
Submission deadline: 1 May 2010
OVERVIEW:
Recent advances in communications technologies have witnessed a growing and
evolving multimedia content delivery market based on information gathering,
manipulation, and dissemination. It is a fact that personal communications,
computing, broadcasting, entertainment, etc. have turned into streams of
multimedia content, and the various communication and network technologies
have become the means to carry that content to a wide variety of terminals.
Unlike traditional communication systems, a fundamental challenge for
present and future communication systems is the ability to transport
multimedia content over a variety of networks energy-efficiently at
different channel conditions and bandwidth capacities with various
requirements of quality-of-service. There are many issues need to be
addressed such as signal processing, collaborations, power management,
flexible delivery, specialization of new content, dynamic access,
telecommunications, networking, etc., due to the multi-disciplinary nature
of the applications in advanced multimedia communications.
The goal of this issue is to bring together the state of the art research
contribution that describes original and unpublished work addressing the new
emerging techniques on multimedia communications. Especially, we solicit
research papers on addressing challenging issues existing for enabling
mobile multimedia communications over heterogeneous infrastructure for
realizing next generation networking and computing, e.g., 4 G all IP
networks, ad hoc networks, wireless sensor networks, ubiquitous computing
environments, cognitive radio networks, etc. For example, ubiquitous
multimedia is a requirement in next generation networks, such as multimedia
adaption in wireless network; multimedia services in ubiquitous
circumstance; improving distributed multimedia communication through
location awareness, action awareness, user awareness, etc. On the other
hand, due to the limited computational power, memory and battery energy in
wireless and portable terminals, power efficient design also plays important
role in next generation mobile multimedia applications.
TOPICS:
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following scope:
1 New emerging multimedia applications and architectures:
* IPTV, 3DTV, and mobile TV-related efforts
* Enabling multimedia capability in E-healthcare, Smart house, etc.
* Wireless sensor system for video surveillance

The 29th Annual Conference of the IEEE Communications Society
March 14 - 19, 2010
San Diego, California USA
http://www.ieee-infocom.org/2010
In 2010, IEEE INFOCOM will experiment with a new track devoted to short
papers describing research activities which can be classified as
Work-in-Progress (WiP).
While traditional INFOCOM submissions are expected to be papers describing
in detail a complete piece of research with its final results, WiP papers
are expected to report on early research results in particularly interesting
and innovative research fields, preferably conducted in cooperation between
industry and academia.
The main objective of WiP papers is to stimulate interest in new, promising,
possibly controversial research fields. WiP paper authors can expect to
receive feedback and suggestions from leading researchers in the field as
well as attracting the interest of industry and government funding agencies.
The topics of interest for WiP papers are identical to those in the main
INFOCOM conference. Submissions to the WiP track will be reviewed by a
separate Technical Program Committee. WiP paper submissions are strictly
limited to a maximum of 5 pages in the usual INFOCOM format; longer
submissions will be rejected without review. Presented WiP papers will be
included in the IEEE Communications Society digital library, in IEEE
Explore, and in the IEEE INFOCOM 2011's CD.
Important Dates:
* WiP paper registration on EDAS: October 8, 2009, 11:59 PM PDT (required)
* Full WiP paper due: October 15, 2009, 11:59 PM PDT (firm deadline)
* Notification of acceptance: January 15, 2010
* Final papers due: April 1, 2010
To submit your paper go to: http://www.edas.info/newPaper.php?c=8137

Over the years, ACM SIG Multimedia has received numerous requests to
create a multimedia systems conference, targeted at the systems
aspects of handling audio, image, video, and graphics data. We are
pleased to announce the First Annual ACM Multimedia Systems (MMSys)
Conference to be held February 22-23, 2010 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The ACM Multimedia Systems conference provides a forum for
researchers, engineers, and scientist to present and share their
latest research findings in multimedia systems. While research about
specific aspects of multimedia systems is regularly published in the
various proceedings and transactions of the networking, operating
system, real-time system, and database communities, MMSys aims to cut
across these domains in the context of multimedia data types. This
provides a unique opportunity to view the intersections and interplay
of the various approaches and solutions developed across these domains
to deal with multimedia data types. Furthermore, MMSys provides an
avenue for communicating research that addresses multimedia systems
holistically.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Multimedia Systems
* Multimedia Networking
* Multimedia Operating Systems
* Multimedia Databases
* Large-Scale and Remote Display Architectures
* Real-Time Support For Multimedia
* Networked Games
* Virtual and Augmented Worlds
* Cyber-Physical Systems
* Peer-to-Peer Architectures for Streaming and Multicast
* Modeling of Multimedia Systems
* Multimedia Interfaces
* Multimedia Middleware and Toolkits
* Multimedia Programming Languages
* Cloud-based Multimedia Processing
* Multi-core Support for Multimedia
* Mobile Multimedia Systems
* 3D and Multiview Streaming
Original papers on emerging and traditional areas of multimedia
systems are sought. All submissions should not currently be under
review in another venue and should be prepared using the standard
double-column ACM proceedings style format. Papers should be a maximum
of 12 pages in length. Short papers (3-6 pages) are also encouraged
and will be evaluated for inclusion in a short-paper track.
Papers should be clearly motivated by themes and issues raised
primarily in the context of multimedia applications and data types
such as:
* Continuity of media over time
* Scalability of systems to support multimedia data
* Adaptation of media to support real-time requirements
In addition to the refereed paper publication, there will be two
unique aspects of the Multimedia Systems Conference:
* Multimedia Systems will have an archival site for all its
conferences. Each paper will have a blog area that will allow people
with questions and comments (moderated) about a paper to be
consolidated over time. We hope this will provide a service to the
entire community to allow people to come up to speed more quickly
about papers that have appeared at Multimedia Systems.
* To help facilitate the sharing and common use of data and
software, we will be having a software / data archive track that, as
part of the publication process, will result in a copy of the software
or data archive in the Multimedia Systems web site. This will allow
researchers to more quickly converge on common data sets for
comparisons.

============================================================
CALL FOR PAPERS
* ACM MONET special issue on "Ubiquitous Body Sensor Networks" *
http://www.bodynets.org/docs/MONET-SI-UBSN-CFP.pdf
============================================================
Overview
Recently, there has been a lot of increasing investigation on a new type
of wireless
sensor network, which is generally known as body sensor networks (BSNs).
Following
the continuous advances in wireless communications technologies, there
is a growing
interest in the design and development of BSNs systems for applications
of improving
people’s daily life, which leads to an increasing demand on
interconnecting BSNs with
other emerging wireless technologies, such as RFID technology, wireless
sensor networks
(WSNs), Zigbee, Bluetooth, WiBree, video surveillance system, WPAN,
WLAN, internet, and
cellular network. With BSNs being incorporated into these technologies,
BSNs become
ubiquitous. The marketing opportunities for advanced consumer
electronics and services
will be expanded extensively. More and more autonomous and intelligent
applications
which are close to human’s life will be generated. For example, by using
body sensors to
collect patient information, and by deploying diverse wireless
networking systems for
enhanced diagnosis assistance and action handling, better E-healthcare
management
system can be designed for providing more desirable services, which
implies huge market
yet to be discovered, due to an increasing demand of E-healthcare
management system
in recent years. In this special issue, we solicit research papers on
body sensor hardware,
system architectures, networking & communication protocols,
applications, test-bed and
prototype, biomedical sensor data processing and management. Especially,
we are
interested in the following communication issues:
*Intra-BSN Communication: The terminology of “intra-BSN communication”
defines the
communication directly relates to the user with the radio coverage of
about 2 meters, which
consists of two categories: (1) the communication among the body
sensors, which are
deployed strategically on the human body or planted inside the body, as
well as attached
within in the human’s clothing; (2) the communication between the body
sensors
and the portable personal server, which typically can be a cell phone,
PDA or headset.
*Inter-BSN communication: The terminology of “inter-BSN communication”
defines the
communication between the personal server and one or multiple access
points. The access
point can be deployed as a part of infrastructure, or strategically
placed in dynamic
environment for handling emergency situation. The inter-BSN
communication will interconnect
BSNs with the wide range networks which are easy to be accessed in daily
life.
*Beyond-BSN communication: The beyond-BSN communication is used to
interconnect BSN
with outside world, which enhances the application and coverage range of
body sensor system
a step further through pervasive communication technology, such as
internet and cellular
networks.
The objective of this special issue is to bring together
state-of-the-art research contributions,
tutorials, and position papers that address these key aspects of
Ubiquitous Body Sensor Networks.
Original papers describing completed and unpublished work not currently
under review by any
other journal/magazine/conference/special issue are solicited.
