IEEE Network Call for Papers
Protection, Restoration, and Disaster Recovery
http://www.comsoc.org/pubs/net/ntwrk/cfpnetwork2003.pdf
Guest Editors:
Debanjan Saha, Tellium, Inc.
Satish Tripathi, University of California
James Manchester, Tellium, Inc.
Scope:
Technological innovations are enabling today's networks to
carry increasingly higher volumes of data, much of which
is mission critical. As networks grow and become an integral
part of our daily lives, the consequences of a failure
become more pronounced. Even a brief outage can result in
the loss of very large amounts of critical information and
disrupt our day-to-day life and business. Network protection
and automatic restoration can minimize the impact of network
failures. Such protection mechanisms are generally implemented
at several protocol layers and are the subject of this special
issue.
The objective of this special issue of IEEE Network Magazine
is to assemble a series of state-of-the-art articles on protection,
restoration, and disaster recovery in different layers of the network.
In particular, we are interested in tutorial, survey, and original
research articles on, but not limited to, the following topics:
* Traditional SONET/SDH Ring protection mechanisms
* Optical mesh protection, Resilient Packet Ring (RPR)
* IP network restoration - MPLS, fast convergence of routing protocols
* Protection and restoration in ATM and Frame Relay networks
* Restoration in wireless and wireline telephone networks
* Signaling network (SS7 etc.) protection and recovery
* Disaster recovery in OSS and network management systems
* Resiliency at the application layer, emergency services (e.g. 911)
* Multi-tier restoration and interaction of different layers
* Experimental studies, applications impact
Submission Guidelines: Interested authors should submit an electronic
version of the manuscript either in Postscript or PDF format as an

Call for Papers
Supporting Multimedia Multicast/Broadcast Services in 3G/4G Networks
Special Issue of IEEE Communication Magazine
Motivation
Current 3G system provides point to point service. There is a strong
interest to provide multimedia
broadcast/multicast service over 3G network. Such multicast services allow
unidirectional
point-to-multipoint transmission of multimedia data (e.g. text, audio,
picture, video) from a
single source point to a multicast group in a multicast area. An example of
a service using the
multicast mode could be a football results service for which a subscription
is required.
Work has started in 3GPP and 3GPP2 to investigate how to enhance 3G system
to provide multicast
service. Many design issues need to be worked out before multicast services
can be deployed in
3G systems. For an example, questions like how the 3G system admits
multicast services, how the
radio access network selects between the use of point-to-point and
point-to-multipoint radio
bearers to deliver MBMS services, how the network alert MBMS subscribed
users on the availability
of MBMS streams. Mobility management of MBMS users need to be considered
too. Handoffs from one
cell/Radio Network Controller to another need to be fast such that packet
losses for MBMS streams
are acceptable.
Since users are expected to be charged for such multicast issues,
authentication and security
issues related to MBMS needs to be worked out.
Scope
In response to the above momentum, this special issue aims at providing a
timely and concise
update of the current activities and findings in this area. In addition, it
aims to address the
key technical challenges associated with these services. In this context,
papers are solicited
reporting on representative topics such as:
* Enhanced 3G architecture design for MBMS services
* Radio resource management strategies for MBMS services
* Paging Strategy for MBMS services
* Overlay WLAN/3G architecture for providing MBMS services
* Airlink Scheduling for MBMS services
* Power control issues for MBMS services
* Security/Authentication Issues for MBMS services
* Performance Studies
All submissions should adhere to the style of IEEE Communication Magazine.
Guidelines for
prospective authors can be found on-line at
http://www.comsoc.org/pubs/commag/sub_guidelines.html.
Please submit your electronic manuscript in word or pdf format to one of
the guest editors by
June 30th, 2003. Earlier submissions are encouraged to allow for a better
issue planning.

IWQoS is a successful series of workshops providing an international
forum for the presentation and discussion of new research and ideas on
quality of service (QoS). The goal of the workshop is to bring
together researchers, developers, and practitioners working in this
area to discuss recent and innovative results, and identify future
directions and challenges, in developing practical systems where
predictable and controlled performance is a central requirement.
Papers are solicited on all aspects of architecture, algorithm, and
protocol design for systems in which QoS requirements are important.
In addition to traditional IWQoS topics such as service guarantees and
admission control, papers offering research contributions related to
robustness, resilience, security, and predictability in networking and
distributed systems are particularly solicited.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Scalable QoS architectures
* Analytical and simulation models for QoS
* QoS control for middleware
* QoS-aware programming models and languages
* QoS issues in overlay and peer-to-peer networks
* QoS issues in ad-hoc networks
* Robust and resilient systems
* Content delivery networks with service guarantees
* Service assurances in wireless and mobile environments
* QoS support for information appliances
* Modeling user and application QoS requirements
* Charging, accounting, and pricing for QoS
* Experiences with QoS (measurements, tests, evaluations)
IWQoS aims to allow rapid dissemination of research results and to
provide fast turnaround. The deadline for papers is therefore as close

Call for Papers
LCN 2003
The 28th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN)
Bonn/Königswinter, Germany
October 20-24, 2003
URL: http://www.ieeelcn.org
The IEEE LCN conference serves as the premier conference on leading
edge and practical computer networking. This approach stimulates a
highly interactive environment and enables an effective interchange
of results and ideas among local network researchers, developers,
and users. During the 27 years of this conference, major advancements
have been achieved in local computer networks driven by application
demands associated of the global Internet, the Web, etc. This year we
are targeting the realm of embedded networks, wireless networks,
high-speed networks, ubiquitous computing, and security as well as
management aspects surrounding them. Papers covering these areas are
explicitly sought and will be given preference. We encourage you to
submit original papers describing research results or practical
solutions.
Paper topics include but are not limited to:
- Personal-Area Networks - Sensor Networks
- Wearable Networks - High-Speed Networks
- Wireless Networks - Network Management
- Mobility Management - Network Security
- Location-Dependent Services - Network Reliability
- Local-Area Networks - Network to the Home
- Home Networks - Quality-of-Service/Congestion Control
- Small-Office Networks - Adaptive Applications
- Embedded Networks - Performance Evaluation/Measurements
- Storage-Area Networks - Network Traffic Characterizations
- Optical Networks - Overlay Networks
Authors are invited to submit full or short papers for presentation
at the conference. Full papers (no more than 10 camera-ready pages)
should present novel perspectives within the general scope of the
conference. Short papers are an opportunity to present preliminary
or interim results and are limited to 2 camera-ready pages in length.
A best paper will be selected based on the quality of research and
results, as well as on the quality of presentation by the primary
author. Several student travel scholarships may be available courtesy
of the LCN corporate supporters. All papers must include title,
complete contact information for all authors, abstract, and keywords
on the cover page. The corresponding author must be clearly
identified.
