CALL FOR PAPERS
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel paradigm which is shaping the
evolution of the future Internet. According to the vision underlying the
IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after
connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate
objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities
and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed and ubiquitous
network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which
can be fully integrated into the current Internet and mobile networks.
Thus, it allows for the development of new intelligent services
available anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything.
When human interaction is absent from the system dynamics, the vision
is also referred to as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications. Many
applications with high social and business impact fall under the IoT/M2M
umbrella, including personal healthcare, smart grids, surveillance,
home automation, intelligent transportation, and it is strongly expected
that new applications will emerge once the enabling technologies reach
a stable state.
At the moment, two of the most important challenges for the widespread
use of IoT/M2M technologies are:
1. Architectures, protocols and algorithms for an efficient
interconnection of smart objects, both between themselves and with the
(future) Internet.
2. The creation of value-added services, especially open and
interoperable, enabled by the interconnection of things / machines /
smart objects, in such a way that they can be integrated with current
and new business and development processes.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and
researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for
discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in theory,
application, and implementation of the IoT/M2M concepts: Technologies,
protocols, algorithms, and services.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- System architectures for IoT/M2M systems
- Protocols and mechanisms for seamless IoT/M2M communications
- Enabling standards and technologies for the IoT/M2M
- Service platforms for IoT/M2M applications

Betreff: MobiSys PhD Forum 2014 - Call for Submissions
Dear all,
Please encourage PhD students to submit to the MobiSys PhD forum 2014. The
submission deadline is approaching -- March 31. The plain text CFP is
listed below.
Apologies to those of you who have received this message multiple times.
Regards,
Aarathi Prasad
MobiSys PhD Forum Co-Chair
*Call for Submissions*
****************************************
*Overview*
The PhD Forum provides a friendly and supportive environment for doctoral
students to present and discuss their dissertation research both with their
peers and with a panel of experienced researchers from academia and
industry. In addition to providing feedback and advice, this forum will
provide an excellent opportunity for students to network as well as to
practice presenting their research clearly and concisely.
This meeting is best suited to students who are far enough into their PhD
to have a concrete dissertation proposal outlining the key challenges they
plan to solve as well as the strategies and methodologies that are
applicable. Furthermore, participants should not plan to finish their
dissertation within 6 months of the forum, as that would leave little time
to include advice and suggestions into their work.
*Awards*
Best presentation will receive an award at the forum.
*Format*
The forum will be a one-day event consisting of short student
presentations, discussion, and a roundtable discussion. Each participant
will have time allotted for a short presentation as well as an in-depth and
constructive discussion led by the panel. In order to allow adequate time
for each presentation, we will limit the number of participants to 10
presenters.
The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion, in which panelists
will have another opportunity to provide general suggestions and advice to
the entire group.
*Submission*
Submissions should consist of the following:
An extended abstract of the student's dissertation research (up to 2 pages)
including a brief discussion of motivation, challenges, related work,
initial results, and references. Applicants should clearly identify their
contributions to the field of mobile systems. Also, it is recommended to
clearly delineate the student's prior work and cite them; this will help
the reviewers and the panel to make better judgment of technical
contributions and provide more useful suggestions.
A short biographical sketch (1 page max) describing the applicants
affiliations and research activities. This should include the date that the
student expects to complete his/her dissertation.
The submission format should be used by the same format of MobiSys
conference. Please visit
here<http://www.sigmobile.org/mobisys/2014/submission.php> for
detail. Submissions MUST be no more than two (2) pages. This length
includes everything: figures, tables, references, appendices and so forth.
Please register and submit your paper using the submission system.
There may be some travel grants from NSF and SIGMOBILE to attend PhD Forum.
Submissions will be handled via email: mobisys14.phd.forum(a)gmail.com
If accepted, a student may be asked to provide explanations or
clarification by the camera-ready deadline.
*Important Dates*
Submission deadline: : March 31, 2014 (11:59 PM PST)
Notification deadline: April 17, 2014
Camera-ready deadline: April 27, 2014
Forum Date: June 16, 2014

Computers & Electrical Engineering
*Special Issue on Green Engineering Towards Sustainable Smart Cities*
http://www.journals.elsevier.com/computers-and-electrical-engineering/call-…
Since 2007, for the first time in human history, more people live in
cities
than in rural areas. By 2030, the world population is expected to be
nearly
60% urban, and by 2050, this proportion will increase to 70%, according to
the United Nations. With populations growing, cities need to face
increasing and critical problems of urban environments. From
transportation
to green/smart buildings, urban agriculture, environmental monitoring,
energy storage and public safety/security, all of these new applications
rely on the deployment of smart object networks offering a high degree of
scalability, reliability, and security. This is why we believe that
current
and probable future green engineering challenges in building smarter
cities
must employ the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm to enable the creation
of
urban and sustainable cyber-physical systems.
*Scope*
The scope of this special issue is to explore state-of-the-art research
covering a variety of concepts on green engineering in building smart
cities in an efficient and sustainable way. Original, unpublished
manuscripts in any aspects of Green Engineering and Smart Green Cities
(SGC) are welcomed for this special issue. The topics of interest include,
but are not limited, to:
- Cyber-physical systems for SGC
- IP smart objects, green clouds and Sensing as a Service (SaaS) for SGC
- IoT architectures and platforms for SGC
- IoT privacy, security and trust management in smart green environments
- Sensor applications for a SGC (e.g. smart parking, structural health
monitoring, traffic congestion, smart street lighting)
- Content-Centric Networking in SGC
- Electric vehicles, smart grids and microgrids
- Energy-aware and green ICT infrastructures for SGC
- Energy harvesting, energy saving and carbon footprint reduction
- Case studies and innovative applications for SGC
- Prototypes, experimental testbeds and simulation environments
*Submission details*
High quality contributions not yet published and not currently under
review
by other journals or peer-reviewed events are sought. Manuscripts should
be
submitted to the Elsevier Editorial System
(http://ees.elsevier.com/compeleceng/). A guide for authors in preparing
their papers is available at
http://www.elsevier.com/journals/computers-and-electrical-engineering/0045-….
To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for this special
issue, it is important that authors select *SI-green* as the "Article
Type"
during the submission process.
*Important dates*
Manuscript due date: August 15, 2014
First decision notification: November 15, 2014
Revised manuscript due date: December 15, 2014
Final decision notification: January 15, 2015

*** CALL FOR PAPERS: IEEE Communications Magazine ***
Recent Advances in Technologies for Extremely Dense Wireless Networks
(http://www.comsoc.org/files/Publications/Magazines/ci/cfp/cfpcommag0115.html)
** DESCRIPTION
The ever growing demand from users of mobile networks, in terms of
both capacity and coverage, is driving the current (e.g., IEEE 802.11,
LTE, WiMAX) and near-future (e.g., LTE-Advanced, IEEE 802.11ac/ad/af
and High Efficiency WLAN - HEW) technologies alike towards their
limits. The more sustainable solution to the 5G promise of true
ubiquitous mobile broadband is to deploy very dense wireless networks,
which we call DenseNets. Intuition based on experience suggests that
DenseNets will encompass significant overlapping, and possibly
non-interoperable technologies, which can be seen as an evolution of
today’s heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Similar to HetNet but only
more severe, DenseNets will have to face a multitude of
techno-economic challenges such as backhaul availability, very low
cost of small base stations, operation, administration and management
(OAM), Machine Type Communications (MTC), etc.
Some of the relevant issues already identified in the DenseNets
scenarios include the nonlinear characteristics of the achieved
throughput and energy consumption. As an increased number of cells are
being deployed, the effect of the interference becomes dominant,
resulting on an overall throughput which is not linear with the number
of cells. Similar nonlinear effects on energy efficiency have been
observed due to the need for the equipment to be continuously serving
high demand applications.
In order to overcome these problems, a new family of solutions
characterized by the use of cooperative approaches is required to take
advantage of the new opportunities brought by the DenseNets scenarios.
This opens a broad spectrum of research directions, standardisation
paths, and market opportunities, which will involve the relevant
communities in both academia and industry in the forthcoming years.
The goal of this feature topic is to publish original material, either
research or review articles, on the topic of extremely dense wireless
networks (DenseNets). All material should be comprehensible and
accessible to non-expert readers.
** TOPICS OF INTEREST
- Exploration of the fundamental limits of wireless networks
(scalability, capacity, ...)
- Real life experiences with DenseNets (deployments, large scale
testbeds, ...)
- Novel business models, requirements, use cases, and applications
- Analysis and simulation of extremely dense wireless networks
- Advanced mobility management solutions within DenseNets resulting in
extremely fast handover (Distributed Mobility Management - DMM, PMIPv6
and beyond, ...)
- Software Defined Networking (SDN) approaches for wireless/cellular
networks
- Cloud Radio Access Networks (C-RAN) approaches for DenseNets
- Novel theoretical frameworks for DenseNets
- Energy Efficiency techniques for DenseNets
- Approaching density-proportional capacity of DenseNets
- Evolved network management and Operations Systems Support (OSS) for
DenseNets
- Standards and technologies for small cells (IEEE 802.11, LTE HeNB, ...)
- 3GPP LTE-Advanced and beyond-LTE support to DenseNets
** SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
This Feature Topic Issue solicits original work that must not be under
consideration for publication in other venues. Authors should refer to
the IEEE Communications Magazine's author guidelines at
http://www.comsoc.org/commag/paper-submission-guidelines for
information about content, constraints (4500 words or less, no

Call for Papers (http://symlab.ust.hk/conf/mars/)
Smartphones embedded with many sensors have become very powerful. Hence,
recently several mobile augmented reality (AR) applications have been
developed e.g. AR-based tourist guiding system. Such applications
superimpose computer-generated data such as text, video, graphs on top
of the real-world view as captured by a camera embedded within a
smartphone. Thus, such applications enhance a user’s perception of
reality and of his surrounding environment. Furthermore, mobile
augmented reality applications which are designed for children with
special needs have recently appeared. In addition, recently researchers
have extended robots usage into our daily lives such as search and
rescue operations, education, entertainment, special need population
e.g. autistic children or seniors. These new mobile augmented reality
and robot application domains require close interactions with human
beings, smart intelligence to allow smooth visual and audio recognition
and some novel interface design. In this workshop, we hope to gather
researchers who conduct researches in these two exciting fields to
gather and share information on the challenges they face as well as
their innovative design.

Call for Student Posters/Demo
INFOCOM 2014 will host the annual Student Workshop on Sunday, April 27th,
2014. The Student Workshop will provide a platform for students to
publicize their research work through posters/demo, obtain feedback, and
learn the problems that are being tackled by fellow students. More
importantly, it also provides a venue for them to "networking" with their
peers and established researchers, and obtain valuable advices from
informative talks. We invite the submission of abstracts before the
deadline below, describing ongoing research in all areas of computer
networking and communications (for a list of topics, please refer to the
INFOCOM'2014 Call for Papers).
Submitted abstracts must be in PDF format, and must be no longer than 2

Call for Papers
Special Issue on New Research Challenges in Mobile, Opportunistic and
Delay-Tolerant Networks
Elsevier Ad Hoc Networks
* Deadline: February 17, 2014 *
http://www.journals.elsevier.com/ad-hoc-networks/call-for-papers/special-is…
Internet is extending beyond its fixed network infrastructure boundaries
by gradually incorporating a wide range of challenging networks and
autonomous devices, serving non-traditional user communities, such as
space missions, disaster areas, and economically challenged populations.
These hybrid network environments require supportive strategies to
exploit even the slightest communication opportunity. Furthermore, the
complexity of this task increases if we also consider device
constraints, energy aspects and application diversity. In this context,
what appears theoretically possible becomes conditionally feasible only
when all available network resources are being efficiently exploited,
including those hosted in nearby fixed deployments.
New research paradigms can give a unification perspective to the various
pieces of the global network jigsaw puzzle. Software-Defined Networks
(SDNs), Mobile Cloud Computing and Information-Centric Networks (ICNs)
are among the recent innovations that can enable flexible solutions for
integrating infrastructure with mobile and opportunistic networks,
addressing challenging network conditions, and supporting promising new
applications.
This Elsevier Ad Hoc Networks Special Issue aims at soliciting original
manuscripts on experimental & theoretical work revisiting the research
areas of mobile and opportunistic networks in the context of recent
developments in networking research, including new fixed network
technologies and concrete use-cases (e.g., disaster situations, space
environments and free Internet deployments). On the one hand,
infrastructure networks are becoming more flexible and can provide a
supportive environment in which mobile-to-mobile communication can
flourish, e.g., improving the Quality of Experience (QoE) and energy
efficiency for users and devices, respectively. On the other hand, the
deployed opportunistic networks can extend the pool of available
resources and increase network coverage worldwide.
Topics for the special issue include, but are not limited to:
- Opportunistic Networks / Delay- and Disruption-Tolerant Networks
- Software-Defined Networks & OpenFlow deployments supporting mobile
communication
- Mobile Cloud Computing
- Information-Centric Networks for hybrid network deployments
- Space Communications extending the Internet
- Free Internet / Lowest-Cost Denominator Networking
- Extreme conditions / Disaster area communications
- Social networking based communications
- Test-beds / real deployments of infrastructure-supported mobile
communications
- Security, privacy and trust in challenging network environments
- Resource pooling between fixed infrastructures and mobile environments.
- New applications / services in integrated network environments
- Network management issues / solutions over hybrid network deployments.
