Special Issue of the Elsevier Pervasive and Mobile Computing journal on
“Mobile and Pervasive Applications in Tourism”

Elsevier PMC [IF=1.629]; paper submission deadline: Jan. 15, 2014

Scope:
The convergence of information technology, the Internet and telecommunication industry generated massive changes in the tourist industry. ICTs has been rapidly adopted by tourist businesses and authorities in a bid to gaining advantage over competitors. e-Tourism emerged as a promising revision of the previous business models and initiatives related to tourism, with the advent of web technologies. ‘Mobile tourism’ extended the notion of e-Tourism to meet the vision of tourist services provision to nomadic users with no spatial–temporal restrictions. The recent developments in mobile hardware and software allowed for the provision of a new range of personalized, context-aware services that were not previously feasible.
Further on, improvements in the area of mobile communications and networking have increased the availability of wireless bandwidth thereby providing new possibilities for exchanging and sharing data among tourists. Smartphones, mobile and wearable sensors, and other portable systems are commonly used to collect and exchange data as well as to infer personal, social and environmental context. Along this line, pervasive technologies open profound opportunities for the tourism industry and have the potential to revolutionize the tourist experience, delivering added-value services to tourists 'on the move'. However, before such applications can be widely deployed and used, several fundamental technical, social and business challenges need to be addressed.
The proposed SI aims at publishing outstanding articles describing innovative applications and frameworks that enable the use of mobile and pervasive technologies in tourism and outline the state of the art in this particularly promising area of research. We invite research papers as well as papers which address challenges in developing industrial-strength mobile and pervasive applications. The list of topics includes, but is not limited to:
§ Novel context-aware applications in mobile/pervasive tourism
§ Context reasoning and modeling in mobile/pervasive tourism
§ Recommender systems in mobile/pervasive tourism
§ Augmented and mixed reality applications in mobile tourism
§ Pervasive games in tourism
§ Novel edutainment applications in mobile/pervasive tourism
§ Novel indoors mobile/pervasive tourist applications
§ RFID/NFC-based mobile tourism applications
§ Travel navigation and assistance applications
§ Participatory sensing applications in tourism
§ Crowd sourcing in mobile tourism
§ Information sharing and social interaction in pervasive tourism
§ User-generated content in mobile tourism
§ Efficient algorithmic solutions in support of computationally-intensive mobile tourist applications
§ Interactive surfaces and walls in support of tourist applications
§ HCI issues and interaction models in mobile/pervasive tourist applications

# Scope of Special Issue #
The Internet is becoming more and more ubiquitous. One central element of
this trend is the existence of a massive network of interconnected
wired/wireless physical objects/things/sensors/devices, which can interact
in a rich set of manners through a worldwide communication and information
infrastructure and provide value added services. The vision of such an
Internet of Things (IoT) system, supported by industrial companies and
governments globally, has the potential to mark an evolution that will
surely have a great impact on our environments and our lives. Yet, the
realization of a ubiquitous IoT also poses a number of challenges where
security is among the top concerns. The globally interconnected physical
objects inevitably result in a potentially enormous attack surface that can
be easily exploited if without adequate protection. To enable strong
security foundations for the ubiquitous IoT, plenty of factors need to be
taken into account. Examples are data security, privacy, access control,
information assurance, trust management, secure services interoperability,
seamless integration, system heterogeneity, scalability, and mobility. This
special issue solicits high-quality original research results about IoT
that pertain to state-of-the-art security and privacy issues in various
pervasive and ubiquitous scenarios. We encourage submissions on
theoretical, practical, as well as experimental studies, from both academia
and industry, related to all aspects of security for IoT. Topics of
interests include (but are not limited to) the following categories:
- Secure IoT architecture
- IoT access control and key management
- Identification and privacy for IoT
- Smart phone enabled secure smart systems

*** CALL FOR PAPERS: IEEE Communications Magazine ***
Recent Advances in Technologies for Extremely Dense Wireless Networks
(http://www.comsoc.org/files/Publications/Magazines/ci/cfp/cfpcommag0115.html)
** DESCRIPTION
The ever growing demand from users of mobile networks, in terms of
both capacity and coverage, is driving the current (e.g., IEEE 802.11,
LTE, WiMAX) and near-future (e.g., LTE-Advanced, IEEE 802.11ac/ad/af
and High Efficiency WLAN - HEW) technologies alike towards their
limits. The more sustainable solution to the 5G promise of true
ubiquitous mobile broadband is to deploy very dense wireless networks,
which we call DenseNets. Intuition based on experience suggests that
DenseNets will encompass significant overlapping, and possibly
non-interoperable technologies, which can be seen as an evolution of
today’s heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Similar to HetNet but only
more severe, DenseNets will have to face a multitude of
techno-economic challenges such as backhaul availability, very low
cost of small base stations, operation, administration and management
(OAM), Machine Type Communications (MTC), etc.
Some of the relevant issues already identified in the DenseNets
scenarios include the nonlinear characteristics of the achieved
throughput and energy consumption. As an increased number of cells are
being deployed, the effect of the interference becomes dominant,
resulting on an overall throughput which is not linear with the number
of cells. Similar nonlinear effects on energy efficiency have been
observed due to the need for the equipment to be continuously serving
high demand applications.
In order to overcome these problems, a new family of solutions
characterized by the use of cooperative approaches is required to take
advantage of the new opportunities brought by the DenseNets scenarios.
