Doctoral students working in areas related to wireless, mobile and multimedia networking are solicited to submit an extended abstract comprising a summary of their research findings, work in progress and planned research. The forum will be a platform for PhD students to interact both with their peers as well as experienced researchers from industry. The forum will be organized as a poster session and will include a ‘1-minute madness’ introduction by each student. Current Ph.D. students are encouraged to submit extended abstracts. The Ph.D. student should be the sole author, although contributions of the advisor and others may be acknowledged in the extended abstract. Submissions will be reviewed to ensure quality and relevance. Authors of accepted submissions are expected to attend WoWMoM 2012 and present their poster at the PhD Forum. The best presentation at the Forum will receive a sponsored award, and there is likely to be travel assistance for some students. Accepted extended abstracts will appear in conference proceedings. Extended Abstract Submission: Ph.D. students are invited to submit two-page extended abstracts that describe current research and potential contributions to theory and innovation in mobile and wireless computing/communications, multimedia on mobile networks and closely related areas. Submissions must be received by no later than April 2, 2012. Extended abstracts should include the author's name, affiliation, and email address. There will be a prize for the best PhD Forum extended abstract. Submissions must be PDF files, written in English. IMC 2012<http://www-net.cs.umass.edu/imc2012/index.htm> invites submissions that expand our understanding of how the Internet ecosystem behaves. IMC takes a broad view of what constitutes the Internet ecosystem. Review process and criteria * IMC 2012 invites two forms of submissions * Full papers (up to 14 pages) that describe original research, with succinctness appropriate to the topics and themes they discuss. * Short papers (up to 6 pages for text and figures + up to 1 page for references) that convey work that is less mature but shows promise, articulate a high-level vision, describe challenging future directions, critique current measurement wisdom, or offer results that do not merit a full submission. All submissions that are longer than what is allowed for a short paper will be evaluated as full papers. Authors should only submit original work that has not been published before and is not under submission to any other venue. We will consider full paper submissions that extend previously published short, preliminary papers (including IMC short papers) following the model of the ACM SIGCOMM policy (http://www.sigcomm.org/about/policies/frequently-asked-questions-faq). * Ethical standards for measurement must be considered by all authors. Ein Beispiel fuer solche Systeme sind drahtlose Sensornetze, die einmal in die Umgebung ausgebracht autonom eine applikationsspezifische Ueberwachungsaufgabe erfuellen (z.B. Erkennung von Brandherden in einem Waldgebiet). Urspruenglich als isolierte Netze konzipiert, werden drahtlose Sensornetze zunehmend als integraler Bestandteil eines zukuenftigen Internets gesehen. Durch Verlaengerung der Internetprotokolle in die Sensornetze und damit in die reale Welt hinein entsteht ein Internet der Dinge (engl. Internet of Things, IoT), in dem der Zustand sensorbestueckter Objekte, Personen und Orte in Echtzeit verfuegbar sind und mittels Aktoren sogar beeinflusst werden koennen. Eine ganze Reihe wichtiger Anwendungen koennen von der resultierenden Infrastruktur profitieren. Beispielsweise kann das Internet der Dinge im Bereich "Smart Cities" die Lebensqualitaet verbessern und den Verbrauch von Ressourcen reduzieren. Im Bereich des "Ambient Assisted Living" wird durch das Internet der Dinge ein altersgerechtes autonomen Leben zu Hause ermoeglicht. Die Integration drahtloser Sensoren und Aktoren ins Internet und die Entwicklung von Anwendungen fuer das Internet der Dinge ist hoch komplex, da hier zwei bisher weitgehend voneinander getrennte Welten aufeinandertreffen: des Internet auf der einen Seite und eingebettete Systeme auf der anderen Seite. Es muss also eine Bruecke zwischen den grundlegend verschiedenen Entwurfs- und Entwicklungsmethoden, Protokollen, aber auch Werkzeugen in beiden Welten geschlagen werden. Wichtige Aspekte sind daher die Entwicklung neuartiger uebergreifender Konzepte, Methoden, Algorithmen und Softwareinfrastrukturen zur Integration eingebetteter Systeme ins Internet und zur Entwicklung von Anwendungen fuer das resultierende Internet der Dinge. Im Rahmen dieses Workshops sollen diese Themen in einem interdisziplinaeren Kreis diskutiert werden. Dazu zaehlen explizit sowohl praktische als auch algorithmische Aspekte. To meet these new requirements, there have been extensive R&D activities in the academia, industry, and government agencies around the world. Notably, in future digital cities and their connected vehicles with on-board computation, sensing and storage capabilities, the paradigm will shift from vehicles being consumer of the network to vehicles being actor of the network. Accordingly, there is a need for innovative solutions in the interdisciplinary approaches involving vehicular communications, sensing, and computing. The VCSC workshop aims to cover all related topics of intra/inter-vehicular communications, sensing on the road, and computing to support safer and more efficient driving. The component technology includes reliable and scalable system architecture, interworking with the existing network infrastructure, fusion of local and remote sensing data, new antenna and physical-layer technologies, information dissemination in vehicular networks, privacy and security, and cloud computing to realize these applications. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Vehicular sensors networks and sensing technologies - System architecture for emerging vehicular applications - Drive-through Internet - New physical layer technologies - MAC and routing protocols for vehicular communications - Antenna technologies (SISO, MIMO) - Intra-vehicular technologies (CAN, FlexRay) - Heterogeneous infrastructure planning - Security and privacy - Cognitive radio technologies for vehicular communications - Heterogeneous sensing data fusion for better perception - V2V and V2I content distribution - Vehicular cloud computing - Interaction between vehicles and mobile devices - Interaction between intra- and inter-vehicular devices - Green communication and networks - Prototype and field tests --- IMPORTANT DATES Paper Submission Due: March 31, 2012 Notification of Acceptance: May 04, 2012 Camera-Ready Due: May 18, 2012 --- SUBMISSION GUIDELINES The authors are encouraged to submit full papers describing original, previously unpublished, complete research, not currently under review by another conference or journal, addressing state-of-the-art research and development. Accepted papers will appear in the IEEEXplorer, so the manuscripts must be formatted in accordance with the IEEE Communications Society guidelines.
