Years of effort had been given by researchers and engineers to maximize the lifetime of WSNs in almost all the aspects, e.g., routing, topology control, deployment, data aggregation, clustering, and sleep scheduling. However, recently advanced technical developments have allowed sensor nodes to harvest environmental energy from natural sources, e.g., wind, water flow, ocean currents, and solar, which enable WSNs to have the rechargeable energy supply. With multiple energy sources, the overall efficiency, reliability and sustainability are enhanced in any WSN application system. This emerging technical development gives sensor nodes a totally different energy model compared to traditional battery powered sensor nodes, which fundamentally changed the assumption for many existing lifetime optimization schemes. We should look back almost all traditional challenging issues in WSNs to cope with this new changing. New research issues, e.g., power management with multiple energy sources, should also be considered. This special issue aims at seeking new approaches, methods, and schemes for solving both traditional and new challenging issues in WSNs with environmental energy harvesting. Authors are invited to submit complete unpublished papers, which are not under review in any other journal. The topics suggested can be discussed in term of concepts, state of the art, standards, designs, implementations, running experiments or applications. Publication date : Q1/2013 !! ----- Aim and Scope: -------------- In recent years, the number of networked machines and/or devices, such as those encountered in automatic meter readers, vending machines, or in remote monitoring applications; has dramatically increased. As a result, we have witnessed the emergence of the so-called paradigm of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication. M2M devices are often characterized by very modest data rates, low mobility and stringent cost requirements, along with the need to communicate over a wide area. Besides, in the coming years, M2M devices are expected to significantly outnumber voice and (often bandwidth-hungry) data terminals. All this entails a major re-design of future cellular networks, which were originally conceived with human-to-human communications in mind. This opens a wide research area for future M2M communications, including investigations on scalability, wide-area coverage, energy-efficiency, spectral-efficiency, heterogeneity, cooperation, security and inter-networking architectures. To this end, the European Telecommunication Standards Institute's M2M Technical Committee has proposed a hybrid architecture whereby cellular-enabled gateways act as traffic aggregation and protocol translation points for their capillary (i.e. wireless sensor) networks. Capillary networks, in turn, are composed of a potentially high number of devices (namely, sensors and actuators) equipped with short-range radio interfaces, often compliant IEEE802.15.4-related standards. Current standardization activities in 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) encompass a number of optimizations specifically addressing machine-type communication needs. Moreover, IPSO (IP for Smart Objects) is assembling a protocol stack from standards being finalized at the IEEE and IETF. This special issue aims at gathering recent advances in the areas of advanced M2M communication systems, and technologies, with the perspective of current M2M-related standardization activities in 3GPP, ETSI, IEEE, IETF and IPSO. The design and implementation of these services in a high-performance, reliable, scalable, secure and privacy-preserving fashion presents exciting research challenges. Additionally, the experimentation and validation in VANETs either relies on simulations or testbeds. On the one hand, simulation requires realistic network and mobility models. On the other hand, with the emergence of communications standards and hardware, prototyping and testbeds allow to obtain performance measures under real-word conditions such as realistic signal propagation and vehicles' mobility. VANETs are therefore a popular and active research field with many ongoing large-scale projects involving governments, academia and industry. The workshop on VANETs from Theory to Practice (VTP 2012) will to bring together researchers on VANETs to present and discuss recent advances in the development of inter-vehicular networking technologies. The workshop covers all theoretical and practical aspects related to applications modelling, simulation, prototyping and testbeds in VANETs. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSANs are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSAN. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSANs, WSNs, robot networks, and robotics and automation. Over the last few years, significant efforts are being carried out by industry, academia and government agencies to improve driving safety, increase vehicle traffic efficiency and decrease fuel consumption by exploiting vehicular communications and networking technologies. These technologies, which are generally referred to as VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks), include Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications and can be based on short- and medium-range communication as well as on cellular systems. This workshop will include and solicit contributions addressing technical and research issues, development projects, standardization activities, and field trials on VANET technologies and applications. The objective is to disseminate state-of-the-art results in this highly active research area, to highlight interdisciplinary challenges in the development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), to share lessons learned from field trial experiences and to bring together people from both academia and industry, with the goal of facilitating interaction among them to promote further research activities and conduct joint research on services such as; advanced traffic management, safety control, comfort applications and networking and information services for users on the road. Scope of Contributions: Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research results related to the theory or practice of vehicular communications and applications. They are computer networked and user reconfigurable. A device can be seen as part of a cloud or operate autonomously. It is a device, consisting of CPU, storage and network access and has the intelligence to perform services both reactive and proactive. It can also be seen as a part of a smart environment, i.e. interact with a physical world consisting of sensors and actuators, displays and computational elements that are connected through a continuous network. However this type of service has severe problems if it is to be adopted in the business area. Some aspects which are not solved for the mobile domain include dependability, device management, provability of intent and information filtering. Due to the increasing computing capabilities and the increasing quality of hard- and software of smartphones, we expect these problems to find solutions in the next years and solicit any original scientific work which addresses one of these unsolved challenges. This one-day workshop intends to bring together researchers, professionals and practitioners to discuss and address recent developments and challenges for the design, operation and backend integration of mobile applications for non-commercial Apps as well as enterprise applications. Overview Wireless connected robots and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have enabled great potentials and a large space for ubiquitous and pervasive applications. Robotics and WSNs have mostly been considered as separate research fields and little work has investigated the marriage between these two technologies. However, these two technologies share several features, enable common cyber-physical applications and provide complementary support to each other. The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers from academia, and industry working in to both robotics and sensor networks areas to present and discuss recent advances and innovative ideas pertaining to these fields.
