Smart Spaces (SS) represents an advanced communication environment featuring daily-life objects that continuously involve and are focused on final non-expert users. SS has rapidly emerged as an exciting new paradigm that tends to include different active research fields such as ubiquitous, grid, and P2P computing. SS environments have recently raised tremendous interests in both the academic and the industrial research communities as one of the most promising application fields for pervasive computing services. The WTA 2010 aims to address system and network issues for SS communications. It will solicit both original research papers and review articles that enhance the state-of-the-art in these fields, including topics like effective context extraction and representation, context-based service discovery, context-based service composition, integration of legacy systems and services, security theory, business models, and novel applications that are associated with SS utilization. The papers will be peer reviewed by at least three independent reviewers and will be selected on the basis of their quality and relevance to the theme of this conference. FutureTech 2010 is the next event in a series of highly successful symposium on wireless sensor network technologies and applications for SS (WTA), previously held as SH-10 (Busan, Korea, May 2010), SH-09 (Toronto, Canada, July 2009), SH-08 (Hainan, China, Dec. 2008), SH-07 (Jeju, Korea, Dec. 2007), IWSH-06 (Jeju, Korea, Nov. 2006). These nodes are deeply embedded into the physical surroundings, and gather and process information such as temperature, humidity, light characteristics, seismic activities or images and sound samples from the physical world. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments and prototypic implementations are still not commonplace. However, experiences gained in such deployments are crucial for the sensor network research community. These results are needed to refine assumptions made when designing hardware, software, protocols and mechanisms for sensor networks. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. We expect the workshop to act as a forum for the sensor network research community to discuss open issues, novel solutions and the future development of wireless sensor networks in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realm of wireless sensor networks. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Experiences from real-world sensor network deployment and applications Innovative sensor network applications Participatory sensing Middleware support for sensor networks Programming and debugging sensor networks Security, availability and dependability issues in sensor networks Experiences with new sensor hardware Practical problems in implementing localization and time synchronization Experiences with communication protocols Practical medium access control protocols (MACs) Topology control and routing protocols in existing sensor network deployments Fault-tolerance and troubleshooting sensor networks Antenna design and experiences with signal propagation Experiences regarding energy management and network lifetime Configuration and installation support Management of large-scale sensor networks Interconnection between IP and sensor networks Submitted papers will be reviewed by three independent experts in the field. Proceedings of the workshop will be published together with those of IEEE LCN, and will be available in digital format from the IEEE Explore Digital Library. SUBMISSION: FULL PAPERS: Authors are invited to submit original unpublished work, not currently under review by another conference, workshop or journal. Full papers should be restricted to 8 camera-ready pages (in 10 pt font, double column, US letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches, IEEE format), including text, figures and references. Energy efficiency is now a critical item in the list of performance metrics of networking equipment and networked systems. Understanding and economizing energy use has emerged as a high-impact research area in networking system of all kinds. Recent studies suggest that the core network expends the largest fraction of the energy consumed by a large network system, and network energy expenditure can be a significant part of planetary computing and communication, contrary to earlier belief that the bulk of energy expenditure is at end-systems or at most the edge network. The role of interaction between end-systems and the network has also been recognized in achieving better energy economy. The OSN special issue on Green Communications and Networking will archive timely research in this area particularly relevant to optical networking design and technologies. The SI may also publish tutorial material suitable for introducing active researchers to different aspects of this new research area. Tutorials articles will be expected to address a broad range of issues in order to be considered suitable. Topics of interest for original research contributions include, but are not limited to: • Metrics of energy-efficiency in optical networks and equipment • Measurements of energy expenditures, data and methodology • Energy efficient devices and designs • Hardware, architectural, and protocol support issues for energy economy • Network design (topology, grooming, placement, wavelength assignment, traffic engg., etc.) in support of energy economy • Energy issues in PONs • Energy efficient interaction of network with smartgrids of clouds • Energy-optimal split between optical and electronic layers (e.g., IP-Ethernet-WDM) • Energy Efficient Optical Ethernet • Optical Switching in Routers and Switches for Reducing Power Consumption • Hierarchical techniques of energy efficiency • Energy awareness in network equipment and operations • Business models of energy-efficient optical networks • Cooperation between network and endpoints for improving energy efficiency • Optical Networking for Green Datacenters All submissions must be original work not previously published or currently under review by any other journal. Continuing the HotNets tradition, the workshop will provide a venue for presenting and discussing innovative ideas that have the potential to significantly influence the community. The goal is to promote community-wide discussion of those ideas. We invite researchers and practitioners to submit short position papers describing such ideas. A paper could, for example, expose a new problem, advocate a new approach, re-frame or debunk existing work, report unexpected results from a deployment, or propose new evaluation methodologies. We especially encourage submissions of early-stage work and enticing but unproven ideas. Once fully developed and evaluated, the work may be relevant to conferences such as SIGCOMM, SOSP, SenSys, NSDI, MobiCom, PODC, or Infocom. HotNets takes a broad view of networking research. This view includes new ideas relating to (but not limited to) home and enterprise networks, ISP networks, sensor and personal area networks, wireless and acoustic networks, data center networks, peer-to-peer networks, network architecture, and disruption-tolerant networks. It encompasses all aspects of such networks, including (but not limited to) resource management, economics and evolution, robustness and security, mobility, interactions with applications, energy, measurement and diagnosis, and hardware. Position papers will be selected based on originality, likelihood of spawning insightful discussion at the workshop, and technical merit. Accepted papers will be posted online prior to the workshop and a workshop summary will be published in ACM SIGCOMM's Computer Communication Review (CCR), widely disseminating the ideas discussed at the workshop. Workshop Participation HotNets is an invitation-only workshop. To ensure an interactive atmosphere, attendance will be limited to around 60 people. The promise of a truly pervasive experience is to have the freedom to roam around anywhere and not be bound to a single location, however, the energy required to keep mobile devices connected to the network over extended periods of time quickly dissipates. In fact, energy is a critical resource in the design of wireless networks since wireless devices are usually powered by batteries. From the mobile manufacturer’s perspective the energy consumption problem is critical, not only technically but also taking into account the market expectations from a newly introduced technology. In fact there exists a continuously growing gap between the energy consumption of emerging radio systems and what can be achieved by Battery technology evolution; Scaling and circuit design progress; System level architecture progress; and Thermal and cooling techniques. Without new approaches for energy saving, there is a significant threat that the 4G mobile users will be searching for power outlets rather than network access, and becoming once again bound to a single location. There is added momentum from the European stage for green radio to globally reduce the electromagnetic radiation levels to have a better coexistence of wireless system (less interference) as well as a reduced human exposure to radiation leading to the so called Green Wireless technologies. Hence, there is a clear need for disruptive strategies to address all aspects of power efficiency from the user devices through to the core infrastructure of the network and how these devices and equipment interact with each other. In this framework, Mobimedia will provide an international forum where industry, researchers and academia will be able to interact and exchange experiences, ideas, and research results surrounding all aspects on power saving to envisage a environmentally friendly Internet of the future.
