CALL FOR PAPERS
Workshop Objectives
Recently, wireless mesh and ad hoc networking is attracting significant
interest from academia, industry, and standard organizations. With
several favorable characteristics, such as dynamic self-organization,
self-configuration, self-healing, easy maintenance, high scalability and
reliable services, wireless mesh networks have been advocated as a
cost-effective approach to support high-speed last mile connectivity and
ubiquitous broadband access in the context of home networking,
enterprise networking, or community networking. Despite recent advances,
and the technical accumulations from more than a decade of research
efforts in mobile ad hoc networks, many research issues remain in all
protocol layers of wireless mesh networks. For example, the introduction
of mixed (infrastructure and ad hoc) architecture, multi-radio,
multi-channel, and multi-antenna, have brought new challenges in the
design of physical, MAC, and routing protocols. New application
scenarios, such as all-wireless office, are urging researchers to
address enhanced QoS support and various security issues in the design
of different protocol layers for wireless mesh networks.
This workshop aims to bring together the technologies and researchers
who share interest in the area of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks. Its
main purpose is to promote discussions of research and relevant
activities in the design of architectures, protocols, algorithms,
services, and applications for wireless mesh and ad hoc networks. Also,
this workshop aims at increasing the synergy between academic and
industry professionals working in this area. We seek papers that address
theoretical, experimental, and work in-progress at the all layers of
wireless mesh and ad hoc networks, from application layer to the
physical layer.
Topics covered in this workshop will include, but will not be limited
to, the following:
• Multi-radio and multi-channel wireless mesh networking
• Wireless LAN, PAN, MAN and WAN
• Multi-hop wireless communications and ad hoc networking
• MAC protocols (IEEE 802.11, 802.15, 802.16, 802.20, and beyond)
• Routing, scheduling, and channel assignment protocols
• Implications of smart antennas on MAC and routing protocols
• Quality of Services provisioning
• Multimedia communications over mesh and ad hoc networks
• Network deployment, localization, and synchronization
• Topology construction and maintenance
• Methods and tools for mesh and ad hoc networks simulation
• Modeling and performance evaluations

Betreff: [Tccc] MobiCom/MobiHoc 2010 CHANTS Workshop Initial CFP
Datum: Mon, 22 Mar 2010 15:57:23 +0100
Von: Pan Hui <ben(a)net.t-labs.tu-berlin.de>
An: tccc(a)lists.cs.columbia.edu, brenton(a)cs.wisc.edu
Dear Colleagues,
Please find our initial announcement for CHANTS 2010. This year it will
be colocated with ACM MobiCom/MobiHoc 2010
Fifth Workshop on Challenged Networks (CHANTS 2010)
September 2010, Chicago, USA
Challenged networks comprise those situations where communication is
desired, but traditional internet protocol architectures fail to provide
it effectively. Such networks may be characterized by a heterogeneous
mix of nodes, nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions.
Common examples of challenged networks include high delay environments
such as inter-planetary networks, limited power environments such as
sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, and communication in settings
that lack infrastructure such as rural and remote areas, and military
battlefields. Challenged networks may also be found in everyday
settings, when access to traditional infrastructure is restricted,
expensive, overly complex, or rapidly changing. The goal of the
challenged network engineer is to design and implement systems for
effective and efficient communication in this diverse range of conditions.
This workshop builds on the success of the four previous CHANTS
workshops, and WDTN 2005. CHANTS provides an ideal venue for
researchers and engineers to present cutting-edge work and results in
the field of challenged networks. The workshop solicits papers and
demos addressing the following topics:
* Delay/disruption-tolerant networks (DTNs)
* Architecture, design, implementation, and evaluation of
communication systems for challenged networks
* Case studies involving real challenged network solutions in
various stages of development or use
* Analysis and characterization of challenged networks and protocols
* Applications in challenged networks
* Configuration, management, and monitoring of challenged networks
* Security concerns and solutions in challenged networks
* Test and simulation tools for evaluating challenged network systems
* Applications challenged networking techniques to communication in
daily life
Selected papers will be forward-looking, will describe their
relationship to existing work, and will have impact and implications for
ongoing or future research. In addition, demos have been an integral
part of CHANTS. Paper authors who can also run a demo of their work are
encouraged to do so. In exceptional cases, where live demos are simply
not practical to present, poster or video presentations of practical
results are acceptable.

Call for Papers and Demos for The 2nd Extreme Workshop on Communication -
The Himalayan Expedition (ExtremeCom 2010)
September 4-10, 2010
--In Cooperation with ACM SIGCOMM
The Extreme Workshop on Communication (ExtremeCom) intends to bring
together researchers and practitioners in areas related to challenged
networks in order to gain experience and insight into the challenges
that such environments pose for the network and the users. Such
networks include delay and disruption tolerant networks, sparse sensor
networks, power-efficient networking, as well as other networking
paradigms for rural and remote areas.
We aim to do this through a real-life experience in the Indian
Himalayan region. Dharamsala, where the workshop will take place, is a
well-frequented and loved destination for visitors. This mountainous
town presents a unique mix of cultures and spiritual traditions and is
also a starting point to a number of spectacular trekking trails.
Dharamsala is also the place where Dharamsala Community Network came
to life in February 2005, following the deregulation of WiFi for
outdoor use in India. Built and operated by AirJaldi, a social
enterprise, the network grew from 8 campuses in 2005 to over 2,000
computers spread in campuses, offices and homes within a radius of
70Km. in and around Dharamsala. AirJaldi is building additional
networks in other rural locations in India.
The ExtremeCom 2010 workshop is planned around AirJaldi’s Dharamsala
network’s locations and facilities, thereby giving participants a
great opportunity to be involved in a real-life network deployment.
The workshop will start with a four-day field trip into the mountain
regions around Dharamsala. During this time, participants will be
given the opportunity to hike along the trails in the mountains, visit
local villages and Tibetan settlements and meet the local population
and users of the network. The combination of trekking and meetings
will give participants a better idea of both the technical and user
requirements of the network, as well as provide opportunities for
informal research discussions between the participants.
Participants who have their own solutions for scenarios like this will
also, to as great an extent as possible, be encouraged to test and
demonstrate it within this environment. (We are currently planning the
mountain-based part of the workshop and some details are subject to
change.) During the field trip, participants will be given the chance
to work with AirJaldi to set up more relays, for example in schools
along the hiking trail (details to be provided at a later stage).
Upon reaching the end of the hike, we will conduct a two-day technical
session in a more traditional conference venue with paper
presentations and demos. The focus will still be on informal research
discussions, with the hope that the recent field experience they have
gone through together will give participants the ability to view and
discuss the topics presented with additional insights.
Authors should submit a 6-page paper outlining ideas and visions about
the topics of the workshop or alternatively a 2-page proposal for a
demo to be shown during the workshop. Visionary and thought-provoking
papers that are likely to generate much discussion during the workshop
are especially solicited. The aim of the workshop is to maintain an
informal environment, where new research ideas can be discussed and
developed. The accepted papers will be published in the ACM digital library.
Topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to:
* Testbeds for large-scale sustainable testing of DTN systems
* Real deployments of networks in extreme environments
* Business and service models for networks in rural, remote, and other
challenging environments
* User experience research
* Delay tolerant networking
* Low-power and intermittent-power protocols
* Mechanisms for emergency and urgent communications
* Networked applications and services
Due to logistics and the need to conduct the workshop in harmony with
the local population and the environment, the number of participants
may be limited. Priority will be given to authors of papers.

The submission deadline for the ACM SIGCOMM Workshop on Home Networks
has been extended to March 26th.
http://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2010/HomeNets.php
Call for papers
The digital home of the future is envisioned as a set of computers,
consumer electronics, mobile devices and sensors that seamlessly
collaborate through wired or wireless networks to share content and
enrich the home user experience through advanced services. Today's
reality, however, is far from that. The home networking environment is a
complex mix of heterogeneous technologies, and devices, all operating
independently of each other, and certainly not offering the set of
services originally imagined. As the number of devices inside the home
increases, and their functionality becomes more complex, we foresee
complexity imposing a barrier in the adoption of technology inside homes
and a lot of frustration on the part of the users that try to deal with
the pain of management and debugging of home services. Existing home
networks are far from fulfilling the user expectations of high Quality
of Experience, advanced home services and ubiquitous access to home
network resources wh
ile within or away from home.
HomeNets aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to share
new ideas and experiences and to discuss the challenges and important
questions posed by today's and future home networks. We solicit
stimulating, original, previously unpublished ideas on completed work,
position papers, and/or work-in-progress papers. We further encourage
papers that propose new research directions or could generate lively
debate at the workshop. While co-located with ACM Sigcomm, Homenets
intends to solicit papers from the computer science, and networking
community, as well as the HCI community that has also turned its
attention to the technology barriers faced by users in their homes.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Monitoring, troubleshooting and Management of Home Networks
Automatic Configuration of Home Networks (DLNA, UPnP, etc)
Measurement studies of Home Networking usage scenarios
Home Networking applications (Internet TV, Video Streaming, Video On
Demand, Games, etc).
Home Networking protocols and technologies (xDSL/Cable, WiFi, Bluetooth,
3/4G, femto cells, power lines, satellite, sensor networks)
Smart technologies for home utilities (e.g., smart grid).
Green Home Networking
Content distribution in Home Networks
Home Network storage architectures
Incorporation of mobile devices to Home Networks
Cloud-aware Home Networking

CALL FOR PAPERS (CFP)
1st International Workshop on Mobility in Wireless Sensor Networks
(MobiSensor'2010)
Santa Barbara, California, USA, June 23rd, 2010
http://www2.aegean.gr/dgavalas/MobiSensor2010/

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) offer unprecedented capabilities for
integrating sensing with computing and communication as well as for
distributed sensing, coordination and control. While WSNs have been a
subject of intensive research for about a decade, most research activities
to date focused on sensor nodes typically deployed in static, pre-determined
locations with sensor readings taken at regular intervals and multi-hopped
to a static sink for subsequent storage and analysis. The next evolutionary
step for sensor networks is to handle mobility in all its forms. That is,
mobility of sinks, mobility of sensors and actuators as well as mobility of
code (i.e. applications). The mobility extension represents a more recent
research subject in sensor networking; mobility opens up a whole new level
of research opportunities and challenges in WSNs, and significantly expands
the types of applications for which WSNs can be used. This workshop aims to
identifying the benefits and challenges from such a step and outline the
state of the art in this particularly promising research area.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Sink mobility in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Actuator networks
- Mobile sensor-actuator networks
- Code mobility in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Mobile agent-based data aggregation in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Mobility issues in underwater Wireless Sensor Networks
- Mobility-assisted communication in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Mobility management in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Connectivity maintenance in Wireless Sensor Networks with mobile elements
- Mobility for maximizing network lifetime in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Mobility models for sinks and actuators in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Routing protocols for handling mobility
- Distributed algorithms and reasoning in Wireless Sensor Networks with

Subject and Purpose of the Workshop
We lately witness a tremendous development in the wireless sensor
networking (WSN), which make it possible to
monitor, unobtrusively and for long periods of time the physical
environment and to collect the relevant data. For
many applications, the sensor networks cannot operate in complete
isolation. There must be a way enabling a
monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced
by the sensor network, and even to
interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read
the sensed value instantaneously, fix some
inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By
connecting the sensor network to an existing
network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet,
mobile smart networks, and notably the
global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be
straightforward. However, many questions
need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such
interconnection become effective. Suitability of IP
standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture.
Is it more effective to use fixed gateways?
Or is it better to employ a dynamic ad hoc mode where all nodes (or
several nodes) cooperatively and alternatively
act as gateways. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks
new vulnerabilities will take place. An
intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore,
but it might remotely launch attacks.
Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered.
Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also
important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. This
workshop is a forum for researchers,
academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the
interconnection of wireless sensor networks,
and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions.
Topics
Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to the
interconnection and integration of WSN to other
networks, including but not limited to:
- Interconnection architecture aspects
- Authentication and security issues
- Vulnerability, protection, and fault-tolerance of WSN
- Quality of Service (QoS) issues in WSN-based integrated networks
- Information processing
- Routing protocols for cross networks
- Network and transport layer protocols for cross networks
- Testbeds for integrated networks
- Middlewares
- Integrated applications and services for cross networks
- Sensor tasking, control, and actuation
- Distributed query processing
- Integration of Body area networks to WLAN and beyond
- In-network processing and aggregation
- Connectivity & longevity
- Location and time services
- Integration of sensor networks and web-based services
Submission Guidelines and Policy
Submitted papers must represent original material that is not currently
under review in any other conference or
journal, and has not been previously published. Papers are restricted to
a maximum length of 6 pages, including
text, figures, and references. All papers will be reviewed. Accepted and
registered papers will appear in the
conference proceedings. At least one author of accepted papers is
required to register and attend the workshop to
present the paper.
Papers should be submitted by E-mail to the workshop co-chairs at the
address: ddjenouri(a)acm.org<mailto:ddjenouri@acm.org>, and CC to:
jianguo.ding(a)ieee.org<mailto:jianguo.ding@ieee.org>,
aderhab(a)mail.cerist.dz<mailto:aderhab@mail.cerist.dz>, with “IWSN paper
submission” as subject. Papers should be
