Our Sincere apologies if you receive multiple copies of this Call
The Eleventh International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and
Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM 2010), 14-17 June, 2010, Montreal Canada
http://wowmom2010.netgroup.uniroma2.it/
*Call for Extended Abstracts*
*PhD Forum*
The second WoWMoM PhD Forum will be hosted at the Eleventh International
Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM
2010). Doctoral students working in areas related to wireless, mobile
and multimedia networking are solicited to submit an extended abstract
comprising a summary of their research findings, work in progress and
planned research. The forum will be a platform for PhD students to
interact both with their peers as well as experienced researchers from
industry. The forum will be organized as a poster session and will
include a '1-minute madness' introduction by each student.
Current Ph.D. students are encouraged to submit extended abstracts. The
Ph.D. student should be the sole author, although contributions of the
advisor and others may be acknowledged in the extended abstract.
Submissions will be reviewed to ensure quality and relevance. Authors of
accepted submissions are expected to attend WoWMoM 2010 and present
their poster at the PhD Forum. The best presentation at the Forum will
receive a sponsored award, and there is likely to be travel assistance
for some students. Accepted extended abstracts will appear in conference
proceedings.
*Extended Abstract Submission:* Ph.D. students are invited to submit
two-page extended abstracts that describe current research and potential
contributions to theory and innovation in wireless, mobile and
multimedia networking. Submissions are due by April 1st, 2010. Extended
abstracts should include the author's name, affiliation, and email
address. Submissions must be PDF files and must be written in English.
Submissions should adhere to the ACM format and be no more than two
pages in length (all inclusive).**
Ph.D. students should submit their extended abstract to
PhD-Forum-WoWMoM(a)supsi.ch.
*Important Dates*
Extended abstract submission deadline: 1st April 2010
Acceptance Notification: 13th April 2010
Camera Ready: 25th April 2010
WoWMoM: 14-17 June, 2010
*PhD Forum Co-Chairs*
Tracy Camp, Colorado School of Mines, United States
Silvia Giordano, SUPSI, Switzerland

Subject and Purpose of the Workshop
We lately witness a tremendous development in the wireless sensor
networking (WSN), which make it possible to
monitor, unobtrusively and for long periods of time the physical
environment and to collect the relevant data. For
many applications, the sensor networks cannot operate in complete
isolation. There must be a way enabling a
monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced
by the sensor network, and even to
interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read
the sensed value instantaneously, fix some
inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By
connecting the sensor network to an existing
network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet,
mobile smart networks, and notably the
global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be
straightforward. However, many questions
need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such
interconnection become effective. Suitability of IP
standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture.
Is it more effective to use fixed gateways?
Or is it better to employ a dynamic ad hoc mode where all nodes (or
several nodes) cooperatively and alternatively
act as gateways. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks
new vulnerabilities will take place. An
intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore,
but it might remotely launch attacks.
Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered.
Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also
important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. This
workshop is a forum for researchers,
academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the
interconnection of wireless sensor networks,
and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions.
Topics
Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to the
interconnection and integration of WSN to other
networks, including but not limited to:
- Interconnection architecture aspects

CALL FOR PAPERS
**Special Issue on Synchronization over Ethernet and IP
in Next-Generation Networks
Guest Editors
Stefano Bregni, Polytechnic of Milan, Italy
Ravi Subrahmanyan, National Semiconductor, USA
*
Network synchronization plays a central role in digital
telecommunications. It determines the quality of most services provided
by the network operator. Traditionally, synchronization has been
distributed across telecommunications networks using the TDM links for
which the networks were designed (i.e. E1 and DS1 circuits).
Several fixed and mobile Operators are migrating to a next-generation
network (NGN) with IP packet-switched network infrastructure. Ethernet
transport is becoming increasingly commonplace. This trend is driven by
prospected lower operative costs and by the convergence between fixed
and mobile services. However, migrating trunk lines to IP transport
poses significant technical challenges, especially for circuit emulation
and synchronization of network elements.
The evolution of communications networks towards packet-switching has
increased interest in the distribution of synchronization using packet
methods. This has a twofold impact:
1) synchronization distribution over packet networks using packet-based
methods has become a focus of activity in the standards bodies (ITU-T
G.8261/2/3 and IEEE 1588);
2) the traditional model, in which synchronization distribution is
engineered carefully for optimal performance, may give way to scenarios
in which there is a greater expectation of ad-hoc synchronization
quality achieved without as much need for provisioning as has
traditionally been the case similar to Ethernet plug and play.
The latter point widens the scope of interest in synchronization beyond
specialists to the wider audience of telecommunications engineers. A
striking example is the distribution of synchronization to
next-generation wireless base-stations, which are connected to the core
network only via packet-switched networks, but still require highly
accurate synchronization to meet service quality expectations.
*Scope of contributions *
The scope of the issue includes, but is not limited to the following
topics of interest:
- key emerging standards in the area of synchronization over packet
networks;
- timing scenarios in various network applications;
- tutorial papers describing packet network characteristics which
impact synchronization transport;
- implementation challenges in achieving high-quality synchronization
using the new technologies;
- carrier and vendor experience in deployment;
- measurement techniques for characterizing and qualifying
packet-based synchronization.
*
**Submission Guidelines*
Articles should be tutorial in nature, with the intended audience being
all members of the communications technology communities. They should be
written in a style comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of
the article. Mathematical equations should not be used (in justified
cases up to three simple equations are allowed). Articles should not
exceed 4500 words. Figures and tables should be limited to a combined
total of six. The number of references is recommended to not exceed 10
(maximum 15). Complete guidelines for preparation of the manuscript are
posted at http://www.comsoc.org/livepubs/ci1/info/sub_guidelines.html.
Please send a PDF (preferred) or MS-WORD formatted paper via Manuscript
Central ( http://commag-ieee.manuscriptcentral.com). Register or log in,

The 2nd ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Planet-scale Measurement (HotPlanet)
co-located with ACM MobiSys '10, San Francisco, CA, USA
June 15, 2010
http://www.hotplanetconf.net/10/
Important dates:
Paper registration deadline: March 14, 2010
Submission deadline: March 21, 2010
Authors notification: April 18, 2010
Camera ready: May 7, 2010
Workshop date: June 15, 2010
It is well-known that successfully researching, designing and building
new mobile, ad hoc, mesh and opportunistic networking systems and
algorithms requires access to large-scale data on human mobility,
encounter, and social network patterns. Unfortunately, the wireless and
mobile research communities lack such data, with typical human contact
traces consisting of less than 100 nodes. We believe that large-scale
datasets are important, not only in communication network design, but
also for fundamental study in other academic disciplines, e.g.,
epidemiology, urban planning, and social science. Complex networks
research has flourished since 1989 when the first large Internet (and
later WWW) datasets became available. To achieve similar improvements in
mobile networking and related fields, large-scale, and ideally
planet-scale, datasets must be collected and made available.
Following a successful introductory event at ACM MobiSys 2009, this
year's workshop will challenge the community to collect large-scale
human mobility traces. Our aim is to highlight the issues in collecting
data on a planet-wide scale, so that the community can help develop
mechanisms to collect, share and analyse such data.
Topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to:
- Motivating applications for large-scale human mobility data
collection, especially from other disciplines, e.g., epidemiology, sociology
- Methods for collecting large-scale human mobility datasets
- New analyses and applications of large-scale human mobility datasets,
e.g., human dynamics characterisation and modelling
- Planet-scale data collection infrastructures
- Testbed federation for planet-scale data collection
- Incentive models for encouraging users and businesses to collect and
contribute data on a planet-wide scale
- Enabling security, privacy and anonymity for large-scale data collection
- Regulatory, legal and ethical issues in planet-wide data collection
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
All submitted papers will be carefully evaluated based on their
originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of
expression. Accepted papers will be published by ACM and placed in the
ACM Digital Library. Submissions must be in English, no longer than 6

June 22nd, 2010
Riccione, Italy
organized in association with the
15th IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications (ISCC 2010)
(http://www.ieee-iscc.org/2010)
Sponsored by
IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Communications Society
Endorsed by the IEEE Technical Committee on
Communications Systems Integration and Modeling (CSIM)
Contributions to MediaWiN 2010 should address the technical challenges
arising from novel networking scenarios. Visionary, early-stage works
that are rigorously presented and can steer discussion to new topics
are particularly welcome. We are actively encouraging researchers to
share their views, research proposals and solutions for multimedia
applications over wireless networks.
Since the first workshop edition in 2006, the proliferation of wireless
access technologies and multimedia applications over IP networks is
leading to a growing interest in the convergence between wireless
networks and multimedia applications. However, the strict requirements
of multimedia applications, the unreliability of wireless media and the
cost of wireless resources make this convergence very challenging.
MediaWiN 2010 offers the opportunity to leading researchers, industry
professionals, and academics around the world to meet, present their
work, and discuss the latest advances about multimedia services over
wireless technology.
All accepted papers will be included in the ISCC 2010 Proceedings, will
be available on IEEE Xplore, and will be professionally indexed by the
IEEE Computer Society's Conference Publishing Service. Topics of
interest include, but are not limited to the following:
* Multimedia delivery over heterogeneous networks (3G, 4G, ad hoc,
multi-hop wireless, peer-to-peer, and hybrid networks)
* Multimedia over Cognitive Radio Networks
* Multimedia delivery for Vehicular Networks
* Error Resilience and Concealment
* Wireless Multimedia Traffic Modeling
* Wireless Multimedia Devices and Services
* Multimedia Applications and Protocols over Wireless Networks
* Experimentation: Testbeds, Field Trials and Empirical Evaluations,
Measurement Studies
* Emerging Standards, Technologies and Novel Paradigms for Wireless
Multimedia
Important Dates
Submission of research papers due: 14 March 2010 (extended)
Notification of paper acceptance: 5 April 2010
Submission of camera-ready papers: 13 April 2010

MISSION OF IJARAS:
Prospective authors are invited to submit manuscripts for possible
publication in the International Journal of Adaptive, Resilient, and
Autonomic Systems. The primary objective of IJARAS
is to
provide
worldwide readership to high quality, novel, effective approaches to
design, develop, maintain, evaluate, and benchmark
adaptive-and-dependable systems, i.e. devices and services that are
built to sustain quality of service and quality of experience despite
the occurrence of potentially significant and sudden changes or
failures in their infrastructure and the surrounding environments.
IJARAS has multiple focuses,
ranging from conceptual models
and
paradigms to technological aspects.
IJARAS builds upon a core mission
statement and research
direction:
The awareness of today's urgent need to structure our computer systems
as adaptive systems constantly re-optimizing in view of changes both
exogenous (environmental) and endogenous (pertaining to internal
assets). It introduces a problem, which implies a research direction
--- a thesis. The truth about this statement is drastically
reverberating through several domains, and in so doing several
seemingly unrelated research domains such as cross-layer adaptation
for mobile devices and business process re-engineering are regarded as
special cases of a larger theory of systems. This vision paves the way
to cross-fertilization; and through that, IJARAS
aims at
becoming a
powerful tool to steer novel ideas and inject new research directions
in this area.
RECOMMENDED TOPICS:
Topics to be discussed in this journal include (but are not limited
to) the following:
* Mechanisms, both general and special-purpose, to model, design,
express, and develop adaptive, autonomic and resilient systems;
* Analytical and simulation tools to measure a system's ability to
withstand faults and optimally re-adjust to new environments;
* Conceptual models and paradigms to express change tolerance;
* Methods, models, and architectures to manage and express
strategies and provisions for cross-layer adaptation;
* Design-time / run-time methods and tools to identify and enforce
optimal trade-offs between energy consumption, performance,
safety, and security;
* Scalable, maintainable, cost-effective provisions, located at all
system levels, to achieve adaptability and dependability;
* Resilience engineering;
* Autonomic business process execution;
* Adaptive service-oriented computing;
* Evolutionary and embryogenic approaches to autonomic computing,
resilience, and adaptive systems;
* Recovery-oriented computing;
* Methods focusing on optimizing quality of experience e.g. adaptive
user interfaces;
* Adaptive fault-tolerance;
* Adaptive fault-masking;
* Adaptive data integrity;
* Autonomous and adaptive systems in robotics;
* Adaptive and context-aware multimedia;
* Personalization;
