******* Registration Deadline --- June 12, 2009 *******
******* Submission Deadline --- June 19, 2009 *******
The 5th ACM International Conference on emerging Networking
EXperiments and Technologies (ACM CoNEXT), to be held in Roma,
will continue his approach to foster scientific and technological
exchanges between various international research communities in
Networking. The main conference will be preceded by a one-day
workshop, and will be a major forum for presentations and
discussions of novel networking technologies that will shape
the future of Internetworking. To improve interaction among
participants, the conference is single-track. It will feature
a high-quality technical program with significant opportunities
for individual and small-group cooperation, from both technical
and social viewpoints. ACM CoNEXT aims to encourage open discussions
on technology alternatives and to be a forum accommodating multiple
viewpoints, and is committed to a fair, timely, and thorough review
process providing authors of submitted papers with sound and detailed
feedback.
ACM CoNEXT 2009 welcomes submissions based on implementation and
experimentation, as well as simulation and analytical approaches.
We solicit papers on emerging networking experiments, measurements,
paradigms, with particular emphasis on creative, out-of-the-box
thinking. Papers reporting on the deployment and performance of
services or exploring network functionality aimed at better supporting
new services are also appreciated. Relevant topics for the conference
include, but are not limited to the following:
- Internet measurement and modeling
- Wireless networks
- Mobile and cellular networks
- Ad hoc and sensors networks
- Economic aspects of the Internet
- Network security issues
- Data center networks
- Peer-to-peer and overlay networks
- Routing and traffic engineering
- Delay and disruption tolerant networks
- New networking protocols and architectures
Submissions must be original, unpublished work, and not under
consideration at another conference or journal. Conformance to
the 12 pages, 10pts ACM SIGCOMM format will be strictly enforced.
Electronic proceedings will be published by ACM, and the best
papers forwarded to the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking for
possible fast-track publication. Travel grants will be available
to support student attendance at the conference.

ACM MobiSys'09 Workshop on Hot Topics of Planet-scale Mobility
Measurements (HotPlanet), Krakow, Poland, June 22, 2009
http://www.hotplanetconf.net/
Important dates:
Submission deadline: May 15, 2009
Authors notification: June 2, 2009
Camera ready: June 12, 2009
Registration deadline: June 12, 2009
Workshop date: June 22, 2009
Call for papers:
It is well-known that successfully researching, designing and building
mobile systems and algorithms requires access to large-scale mobility
data. Unfortunately, the wireless and mobile research communities lack
such data. For instance, the largest publicly available human contact
traces contain only 100 very sparsely connected nodes, a limitation of
the experimental setup. We believe that large-scale datasets are
important, not only in communication network design, but also for
fundamental study in other academic disciplines, e.g., epidemiology,
urban planning, and social science. An analogy can be made to the field
of complex networks research, which flourished since 1989 when the first
large datasets from the Internet (and subsequently the World Wide Web)
became available. To achieve similar improvements in mobile networking
and other related fields, relevant large-scale datasets must be made
available.
In this workshop, we wish to challenge the community to collect
large-scale human mobility traces. We will highlight some of the issues
in the hope that the community can help find solutions that can form the
basis of practical experiments: the main aim is to raise these issues to
gain community support to meet this challenge. Topics of interest
include but are not restricted to:
* Motivating applications for large-scale human mobility data collection
* Methods for collecting large-scale human mobility datasets
* Existing applications of large-scale human mobility datasets, e.g.
human dynamics characterisation and modeling
* Reports of planet-scale infrastructure for data collection
* Proposed business models to incentivise involvement of network
operators in contributing data
* Issues concerning privacy and anonymity of data collection
* Regulatory and legal issues about data collection
The workshop proceedings will be archived in the ACM Digital Library.
Papers must be submitted in PDF format. All submissions must be in
English, no more than 6 pages long, two columns (using the ACM
templates), no characters smaller than 10 point fonts, and must fit
properly on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5x11 inches). Margins must be of
1 inch on all edges (top, bottom, left, and right) of each page.
Papers will be reviewed single blind.
HotPlanet'09 will support a couple of student traveling grants.
Further information please find in workshop webpage:

The 2nd International Workshop on
Adaptation in Wireless Sensor Networks (AWSN-09)
http://tweb.ing.unipi.it/awsn09
In Conjunction with
The 7th IEEE/IFIP International Conference on
Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing (EUC 2009)
Vancouver, Canada, August 29-31, 2009
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are networked embedded systems that rely
on wireless communication. WSNs are supposed to run long-lived
applications. During operation, applications are likely to experience
unpredictable environment conditions that require to dynamically
change their behavior. With current reprogramming technology, such an
adaptation is still an open issue, as it can be achieved either at the
expense of significant energy consumption or through software
complexity. The challenge is to achieve WSN systems that not only embed
intelligence into environments, but also have embedded intelligence for
reprogramming themselves after their deployment.
The workshop aims at stimulating researchers and practitioners in
embedded and ubiquitous computing, autonomic computing, ad-hoc
networking and all other relevant areas to present their ideas and work
in progress for advancing the technologies that enable adaptive WSN
applications.
* Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Re-configurable, adaptive applications
* Context-awareness
* Self-healing, self-protection, self-configuration, self-optimization
* Agents and distributed computing
* Embedded Virtual machines
* Viral programming
* Opportunistic computing
* Intelligent power management and coverage
* Adaptive wireless communication and networks
* Security and fault-tolerance
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

MOTIVATION
In gleicher
Anwendungen. Diese Entwicklungen erfordern neue Ansätze zum Entwurf
von Telekommunikationsinfrastrukturen und deren Implementierung und

OVERVIEW
Interaction with mobile devices and embedded systems has become a part of everyday life. As mobile devices get more complex and embedded systems consist of different components that are networked the creation of usable interactive software poses many new challenges. Issues arise from emerging novel paradigms in user interfaces. In particular tangible interaction, device and interfaces ecologies, and implicit interaction create new requirements for user centered design and system development
The workshop on Mobile and Embedded Interactive Systems (MEIS'09) seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry who are concerned with envisioning, creating, and implementing mobile and embedded interactive systems. The workshop will provide a venue to present novel research in this field and to openly discuss ideas and problems on the topic. By bringing together different viewpoints, in particular embedded systems, complex software systems, mobile interaction, and user centered design, a broader understanding can emerge. The overall aim of the workshop is to foster a community in mobile and embedded interactive systems.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Workshop on the Emergence of Delay-/Disruption-Tolerant Networks (E-DTN)
Technically Sponsored by IEEE
Dates: TBA
October, 2009, St.-Petersburg, Russia
(in conjunction with ICUMT 2009)
[Web: http://www.e-dtn.org/]
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Networking research for challenged environments has attracted
a lot of attention lately. Numerous attractive protocols have
been proposed, which are expected to network places and devices that
currently do not have the opportunity of “going online”. Such
environments reside at the edges of the current Internet infrastructure.
For example, public and private transport vehicles, underwater,
satellite and
deep-space networks are potential DTN deployments of interest.
Communication in the above-mentioned challenged environments is usually
infrastructureless and consists mainly of mobile battery-powered
devices. Moreover, mobility patterns are usually unknown, making
connectivity periods between DTN-nodes intermittent and opportunistic.
To achieve communication in such environments one has to deal with
several performance tradeoffs, such as end-to-end delivery delay and
energy consumption, or reliability and storage congestion.
Since, in most cases, end-to-end connectivity does not exist (hence the
difference from ad hoc networking) current Internet protocols
fail permanently.
Although there have already been a lot of research proposals for
routing, (storage) congestion control, error control and
application design for such networks, the IRTF has
focused mainly on the Bundle Protocol (BP); BP is an application
layer protocol that does not include the appropriate functionalities to
deal with issues such as routing or storage congestion, for example. That
said, DTN research and its future directions seem to lack a stable
basis. For example, it is not clear yet if a “one-fits-all” protocol
stack will be deployed, or if such an approach is feasible at all.
In contrast, several different protocols that each would suit the needs
of its specific architecture/setup would need to be able to interoperate.
This workshop seeks novel ideas in the form of preliminary or
work-in-progress
results as well as mature research papers for Delay-/Disruption
Tolerant Networks. We also encourage position papers that address and
criticize the past, current and future trends of DTN research and are
intended to trigger discussions on the whole spectrum of DTNs.
Topics include but are not limited to:
- DTN Routing
- Congestion and Storage Congestion Control
- Resource Sharing in DTN environments
- Network Coding techniques for DTNs
- Application Development
- DTN Management Platforms
- Error and Flow Control
- Experiences and Measurements from DTN testbeds
- Privacy and Security of Information in DTNs
- DTN Simulators and related tools
- Performance Evaluation and Metrics for DTN Research
- Performance and Design Tradeoffs for DTN Algorithms and Protocols
- Social Networking through DTNs
- Satellite Constellations and DTNs
- Naming/Addressing and interoperability issues with the Internet
architecture
- DTN Architectures:
-- Satellite Communications
-- Deep-space Communications
-- Underwater Communications
-- Connectivity in Developing Countries
-- Communication in Public and Private Transport Vehicles

[Tccc] CFP: GreenMetrics 2009 Workshop (in conjunction with SIGMETRICS/Performance 2009)
by Niklas Carlsson 24 Apr '09
by Niklas Carlsson 24 Apr '09
24 Apr '09
CALL FOR PAPERS -- GreenMetrics 2009 -- May 4 Deadline
GreenMetrics 2009 Workshop
Held in conjunction with SIGMETRICS/Performance 2009
June 15, 2009 - Seattle, Washington, USA
http://conferences.sigmetrics.org/sigmetrics/2009/
Global climate change is a topic of increasing importance in modern
society. The primary objective of this workshop is to explore how
improvements to or new uses of Information and Communication Technology
(ICT) can contribute towards efforts to minimize climate change. In
particular, this workshop will provide a forum for discussions on how to
reduce the environmental impact of ICT. According to a recent report from
the Climate Group, the ICT sector is responsible for 2% of the worldwide
carbon footprint. This is roughly equivalent to the carbon footprint of
the airline industry. Furthermore, an increase of 50% is predicted for
the ICT sector.s carbon footprint by 2020. As regulatory and social
pressures increase, organizations will need to take steps to reduce their
environmental impact. ICT is expected to be a key sector in the effort to
combat climate change, reducing overall carbon emissions by 15% by 2020
(smart2020.org). The workshop will provide an opportunity to explore
opportunities for ICT applications or services to reduce the environmental
impact of existing non-ICT processes.
This workshop is intended to bring together researchers from the
(traditional) SIGMETRICS community with researchers and practitioners in
relevant areas, to exchange technical ideas and experiences on how to
lessen the environmental impact of ICT, or how to utilize ICT to lessen
the environmental impact of other sectors. Improvements are to be
quantified in terms of sustainability metrics such as reduction of carbon
emissions. Improvements in sustainability should ideally also demonstrate
that acceptable Service Level Agreements (SLAs) can be maintained. This
workshop will serve as a forum for the SIGMETRICS community to apply
general measurement, analysis and modeling techniques to this important
area.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Measurement and evaluation of the sustainability of existing ICT systems
* Definition and demonstration of useful sustainability metrics
* Methods that systematically improve the efficiency of existing ICT
systems
* Tools that facilitate the design of more sustainable ICT systems
* Development of models that pertain to the sustainability of ICT systems
* Case studies of efforts to improve the sustainability of production ICT
systems
* Use of ICT systems to improve the sustainability of existing non-ICT
processes
Preference will be given to work on large-scale systems, e.g., entire data
centers or enterprise-scale applications.
Important Dates
* May 4, 2009: Paper Submission (hard deadline)
* May 18, 2009: Author Notification
* May 25, 2009: Final Versions Due

ACM HotNets-VIII
October 22-23, 2009
New York City, NY
http://conferences.sigcomm.org/hotnets/2009/
Call for Papers
The Eighth ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Networks (HotNets-VIII) will
bring together people with interest in computer networks to engage in
a lively debate on theory and practice of networking. Continuing the
HotNets tradition, the workshop will provide a venue for presenting
and discussing innovative ideas that have the potential to
significantly influence the community. The goal is to promote
community-wide discussions of those ideas.
We invite researchers as well as practitioners to submit a short
position paper describing such an idea. The paper could, for example,
expose a new problem, advocate a new approach, re-frame or debunk
existing work, report unexpected results from a deployment, or propose
new evaluation methodologies. We especially encourage submissions of
early-stage work and enticing but unproven ideas. Once fully developed
and evaluated, the work may be relevant to conferences such as
SIGCOMM, SOSP, SenSys, MobiCom, PODC, or Infocom.
HotNets takes a broad view of networking research. This view
encompasses all kinds of modern day computer networks, including (but
not limited to) home and enterprise networks, ISP networks, sensor and
personal area networks, wireless and acoustic networks, data center
networks, peer-to-peer networks, and disruption-tolerant networks. It
also encompasses all aspects of such networks, including (but not
limited to) resource management, economics and evolution, robustness
and security, mobility, interactions with applications, energy,
measurement and diagnosis, and hardware.
Position papers will be selected based on originality, likelihood of
spawning insightful discussion at the workshop, and technical
merit. Accepted papers will be posted online prior to the workshop and
a workshop summary will be published in ACM SIGCOMM's Computer
Communication Review (CCR), widely disseminating the ideas discussed
at the workshop.
Workshop Participation
HotNets is an invitation-only workshop. To ensure an interactive
atmosphere, attendance will be limited to around 60
people. Invitations will be extended per the following priorities:
* the Program and Steering Committees, one author per paper, and
any speakers invited by the Program Committee
* co-authors of accepted and submitted papers, preferring students
as available travel support allows
* event-sponsor representatives and additional authors of
submitted papers at the discretion of the Program Committee
Submission Instructions
Submitted papers must be no longer than 6 pages (10 point font, 1 inch
margins). All submissions must be blind: submissions must not indicate
the names or affiliations of the authors in the paper. Only
electronic submissions in PDF will be accepted. Submissions must be
written in English, render without error using standard tools (e.g.,
Acrobat Reader), and print on US-Letter sized paper. HotNets-VIII
reviews will follow standard academic practice, although some rejected
papers may not receive full-length reviews.
