2009 The 10th IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and
Expo (ICME)
June 28 - July 3, 2009
Hilton Cancun, Cancun, Mexico
http://www.icme09.org
=======================================================================
Overview
IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo is a major annual
international conference
with the objective of bringing together researchers, developers, and
practitioners from academia
and industry working in all areas of multimedia. ICME serves as a
forum for the dissemination
of state-of-the-art research, development, and implementations of
multimedia systems, technologies
and applications.
ICME is co-sponsored by four IEEE societies, including the Circuits
and Systems Society,
the Communications Society, the Computer Society, and the Signal
Processing Society.
The conference will feature world-class plenary speakers, exhibits,
special sessions,
tutorials, and paper presentations.
Paper submissions
Authors are invited to submit their manuscripts in IEEE
double-column format including
authors' names, affiliations, and a short abstract. Only electronic
submission will be
accepted. Please visit the conference website, www.icme09.org for
the instructions to
submit papers. Topics covered include but are not limited to:
* Audio, image, video processing
* Signal processing for media integration
* Virtual reality and 3-D imaging
* Multimedia human-machine interface and interaction
* Multimedia Communications and networking
* Multimedia security and content protection
* Multimedia databases
* Multimedia computing systems and appliances
* Multimedia analysis and social media on the Internet
* Hardware and software for multimedia systems
* Multimedia standards and related issues
* Multimedia applications
A number of awards generously sponsored by industry and academic
institutions will
be presented to the Best Papers / Best Student Papers at the conference.
In addition to the traditional regular 4-page papers, we are
soliciting submissions
of plenary (8 page) papers. Accepted (top) plenary papers will be
given single-track
30 minutes time slots to present their work to the whole conference.
If a paper of good quality
cannot be placed in the mere few single track presentation slot, it
may be accepted
as a long paper and presented in a parallel session.
Multimedia is known for its diversity and the broad spectrum it
covers. To encourge
cross-field collaborative researches, in ICME 2009, we invite our
sponsoring technical
committees to host workshops to introduce the emerging technology in
their respective field.
Thanks to the sponsoring technical committees, the following
workshops have been confirmed:
* Emerging Multimedia Signal Processing Technology Workshop (by
IEEE MMSP TC)
* Emerging Multimedia Circuits and Systems Technology Workshop (by
IEEE MMSA TC)
* Emerging Multimedia Communications Workshop (by IEEE MM

WORKSHOP CFP
1st IEEE Workshop on Media Information Analysis for Personal and Social
Applications (W'MAPS 2009)
<http://www.icme09.org/workshop/WMAPS09>
July 3rd, 2009
Hilton Cancun, Cancun, Mexico
in conjunction with 2009 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia &
Expo (ICME)
The proliferation of mobile multimedia devices and social networks has
led to an explosion of digital media content being created, resulting in
large personal and public multimedia databases in which it has become
increasingly difficult to retrieve specific content and browse the large
collections. In the absence of manual annotation specifying the content
of the media (in the form of captions or tags), most current content
management software only allow simple browsing and navigation options;
which severely limits the search and other advanced functionality. This
is complicated by the available types of media such as images, video,
music, speech, text, and graphics, and the relationship and interactions
among them. In addition to personal collections located at home PCs and
laptops, the wide spread popularity of media and social networking sites
such as Flickr, YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Easyshare Gallery has
enabled users to share and browse images and videos. However, due to the
huge magnitude and variety of media content, it is increasing difficult
for users and consumers to easily navigate, search, compose, and share
their content and memories. When we consider the multimedia information
available on public web sites, we will be confronting with a big
scalability issue with many existing techniques and algorithms.
Solutions that address the broad spectrum of personal and social
multimedia applications are needed.
The goal of this workshop is to provide a technical forum for
researchers from academy and industry to discuss the advances and
challenges of information processing, analysis, and retrieval for
multimedia applications in personal and social domains. We propose to
explore emerging areas of research such as cross-media and cross-domain
information analysis and extraction, which will enhance current
capability of information management applications and enrich the overall
multimedia experience. Another area is to leverage rich metadata and
contextual information associated with the media content. These include
GPS, date/time, captions/tags, camera settings, face and other biometric
information. The advances in user interface technologies incorporating
speech and gesture recognition will also play an important role in
enabling more user friendly and easy to use multimedia applications in
the consumer domain.
We welcome papers that address fundamental research issues in this
challenging area, with emphasis on personal and social applications. We
also encourage papers to report on system level research related to
multimedia and cross-media analysis, processing, and retrieval. A number
of invited papers will also be solicited. Topics of interest include,
but are not limited to:
- Cross-media information analysis and extraction
- Machine learning algorithms for media information analysis and
extraction
- Object, feature, and relation extraction from media
- Semantic content understanding and recognition
- Context-aware analysis of media and cross-media content
- High dynamic range image processing and retrieval
- Reasoning and cross-domain learning methodologies
- Intra- and inter-media representation and ontology for cross media
- Multimedia browsing/visualization tools and cross-media query
- Metadata analysis for semantic annotations of multimedia content
- Semi-automatic and automatic annotation methods for media content
- Media information processing, delivery, and management
- Synchronization of media objects for cross media analysis
- User interface method for media browsing and search
- Speech and gesture interface for consumer multimedia applications
- System level research for media and cross-media applications

=============================
Fourth Workshop on
multiMedia Applications over Wireless Networks
(MediaWiN 2009)
July 5th, 2009
Sousse, Tunisia
organized in association with the
Fourteenth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications (ISCC 2009)
Contributions to MediaWiN 2009 should address the technical challenges
arising from novel networking scenarios. Visionary, early-stage works
that are rigorously presented and can steer discussion to new topics
are particularly welcome. We are actively encouraging researchers to
share their views, research proposals and solutions for multimedia
applications over wireless networks.
Since the first workshop edition in 2006, the proliferation of wireless
access technologies and multimedia applications over IP networks is
leading to a growing interest in the convergence between wireless
networks and multimedia applications. However, the strict requirements
of multimedia applications, the unreliability of wireless media and the
cost of wireless resources make this convergence very challenging.
MediaWiN2009 offers the opportunity to leading researchers, industry
professionals, and academics around the world to meet, present their
work, and discuss the latest advances about multimedia services over
wireless technology.
All accepted papers will be included in the ISCC 2009 Proceedings, will
be available on IEEE Xplore, and will be professionally indexed by the
IEEE Computer Society's Conference Publishing Service. Topics of

CALL FOR PAPERS
The 2nd International Workshop on
Massively Multiuser Virtual Environments (MMVE 2009)
at the IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality 2009 (VR09)
March 15th, 2009
Lafayette, Louisiana, USA
http://peers-at-play.org/MMVE09/
--------------------------------------------------------
With the increasing number of potential users of virtual and augmented
reality
systems, as indicated by the recent boom of massively multiuser online
societies, the design of distributed, massively multiuser virtual
environments
becomes more and more important, posing new requirements on both
distribution
platforms and virtual reality systems. Facing these challenges is a
community-
spanning effort, necessitating the pooling of the resources and
experiences of
the virtual reality and the networking and distributed computing
communities.
The aim of this workshop is to provide a link between these communities to
foster the development of highly distributed, flexible and robust virtual
environments. Following up on last year's very successful workshop
(MMVE'08) at
IEEE VR, we aim to gather the practitioners and researchers in these fields
under one roof to discuss their findings, incite collaboration, and move
the
state of the art forward.
Topics
------
The main topic of this workshop is to provide a critical analysis of
existing
distribution approaches for virtual environments and to identify key
challenges
and techniques that are required for bringing VR systems into the global
Internet, interconnecting thousands of users in a single environment. More
specifically, the workshop addresses the following issues:
1. Scalability, i.e. the ability to handle thousands of (possibly
nearby) users
at the same time, interacting via the global Internet.
2. Interoperability, i.e. the ability to integrate multiple virtual worlds
and/or service providers, e.g. using common protocols or universal
clients.
3. Interactivity, i.e. how to provide highly responsive environments
with near
real time interaction despite network delay and jitter.
4. Bandwidth restricted (mobile) end user devices, e.g. the integration of
mobile devices for nomadic augmented reality applications.
5. Dynamic and flexible distribution architectures, e.g. self-adapting
client/server, peer-to-peer and hybrid architectures.
6. Content streaming, e.g. sound and 3D streaming.
7. Consistency, i.e. providing consistency guarantees to users of the
distributed environment, despite the high level of responsiveness
necessary and
the experienced network delay.
8. Persistency, i.e. the ability to save and access the state of the
virtual
environment despite disconnections and faulty components.
9. Security and privacy, e.g. distributed authentication algorithms that
allow
users to participate in the environment securely and without fear of
being spied
on.
10. Implementation issues, e.g. novel approaches to effectively manage the
complexity of developing applications for such environments.
Submission Guidelines
----------------------
Paper submissions must cover one of the topics listed above, or a closely-
related one. Submitted papers should be about 5-6 pages long, use the IEEE
proceedings format and *must be blinded*. Research papers must be
original prior
unpublished work and not under review elsewhere. All submissions will be
peer-
reviewed (double-blind) and selected based on their originality, merit, and
relevance to the workshop.
Submissions in PDF format must be submitted online through the workshop
page at
http://peers-at-play.org/MMVE09/ no later than January 30th, 2009. Accepted
papers must be presented at the workshop. Selected papers will appear in a
special issue of the International Journal of Advanced Media and
Communication
(IJAMC), subject to addressing all reviewer comments from MMVE and
reformatting
according to IJAMC formatting guidelines.
If you have any questions, please email us at mmve(a)peers-at-play.org.
Workshop Format
--------------------------------------------
The workshop will have three parts. The first part will be an invited
keynote
talk. In the second part, we will have multiple sessions, each
consisting of
about 3 talks. The last part of the workshop will consist of a common panel
discussion including all participants.

NOTE: SUBMISSION DEADLINE CHANGE
LoCA 2009
4th International Symposium on Location and Context Awareness
May 7th-8th, 2009. Tokyo, Japan
http://loca2009.context-aware.org
Abstract submission deadline: January 9th, 2009
Paper submission deadline: January 16th, 2009
*********************************************************************
LoCA 2009 (May 7-8, Tokyo Japan) is the 4th International Symposium on
Location and Context Awareness, with proceedings published in the LNCS
series by Springer-Verlag. LoCA 2009 is co-located with Pervasive 2009
the Seventh International Conference on Pervasive Computing, which will
be held May 11-14, 2009 in Nara, Japan.
The 2009 Symposium on Location and Context Awareness (LoCA) seeks new and
significant research on systems, services, and applications to detect, interpret
and use location and other contextual information. Context includes
physiological, environmental and computational data whether sensed or inferred.
In addition, context includes users' activities, goals, abilities, preferences,
interruptibility, affordances, and surroundings. With context, we can expect
computers to deliver information, services, and entertainment in a way that
maximizes convenience and minimizes intrusion. Developing awareness involves
research in sensing, systems, machine learning, human computer interaction, and
design.
We seek technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research
results. We are especially interested in submissions in the following areas but
welcome submissions from other areas that are relevant to the theme of the
symposium:
* New hardware platforms for sensing location and context
* Machine learning techniques for inferring user location and context from
low-level sensor data
* Location and context representation, management, and distribution
* Privacy policies and communication protocols for location and context
information
* User studies of location- and context-aware systems
* Industrial case studies of end-to-end systems
One paper will be elected for a Best Paper Award by the LoCA program committee
and is designed to recognize outstanding work. In addition, a combination of the
LoCA program committee and all symposium participants will elect the recipient
of the Best Presentation Award following the symposium. Both awards will be made
during the symposium.
Paper Submission Guidelines:
All papers will be reviewed by our international program committee. LoCA 2009
aims to be selective and the committee will favor a technically robust program.
The ideal LoCA submission should provide an insightful survey of existing work,
introduce a radically new concept, or present concrete, significant,
transferable research based on the implementation and evaluation of a working
system.
All accepted papers will be contained in the symposium proceedings which will be
published in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series by Springer.
Therefore submissions must conform to the LNCS LaTeX stylesheets. We solicit
papers of up to 18 pages in LNCS style but explicitly welcome shorter papers for
presentation of pointed results. All paper submissions will be treated as full
papers but it is important that their length is appropriate for their content.
Accepted papers will be presented by their authors at the LoCA Symposium in the
Tokyo. Submit papers as Adobe PDF via EDAS at
http://www.edas.info/newPaper.php?c=6603. Preparation of the camera-ready
version of accepted papers may be shepherded by the program committee.
Best Paper and Presentation Awards:
