To qualify, a paper must significantly utilize a dataset that has been collected for the work presented in the paper. Further, the dataset must be freely available to any researcher; wireless data sets may, for instance, be published through CRAWDAD. Authors should flag papers they wish to be considered for this award with a footnote on the first page of the paper. Novel datasets are especially encouraged. The awarded paper will be chosen from the set of qualifying papers accepted for the conference by a committee made up of a subset of the program and steering committees. While a significant amount of research has been done on the theoretical aspects of sensor networks, literature on experiences with actual deployments of sensor networks for different types of environmental monitoring applications is highly limited. This symposium focuses on the use of sensor networking technologies for environmental monitoring. It provides an ideal platform to discuss various aspects of experiences with real-life sensor network deployments and also new and novel techniques designed specifically for gathering data in environmental monitoring applications. IPSN brings together researchers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research. Its scope includes signal and image processing, information and coding theory, databases and information management, distributed algorithms, networks and protocols, wireless communications, machine learning, and embedded systems design. The conference features two interleaved tracks, the Information Processing (IP) track, and the Sensor Platforms, Tools and Design Methods (SPOTS) track. The two tracks have separate program committees to evaluate their submissions. Authors should carefully review the intended foci of these two tracks to decide which track is better suited for their work, and they are encouraged to contact program chairs with questions or clarifications. The Information Processing (IP) track focuses on algorithms, systems, theory for information processing using networks of embedded sensors. Submissions are expected to refer to specific hardware, software, and implementations. The SPOTS track focuses on new architectures, modeling, evaluation, design methods, implementations, tools, or deployment experiences. Results focused on the analysis and processing aspects of data collected from deployments should be submitted to the IP track, while details on the platforms and tools used in the deployment should be submitted to SPOTS. From a number of angles it appears that we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of the Internet that now requires some major change. However, research and development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is far from being explored. The International Workshop on the Network of the Future (Future-Net 09) is a platform for both clean-slate as well as evolutionary approaches for a redesign of the Internet. It will uniquely bring together approaches driven from mobile and wireless demands, network virtualization, network self-management, content and sensor networking and discuss these from both a technical as well as socio-economic perspective. Topics of Interest: We solicit contributions that report early results addressing research challenges in topics related to the network of the future. Particularly, we want to identify and address issues with a high potential for significant impacts on the way the network is functioning and being used. The workshop welcomes submissions from both researchers and practitioners but fresh ideas in the form of early results, position papers and systems papers are particularly welcome. WSNs are supposed to run long-lived applications. During operation, applications are likely to experience unpredictable environment conditions that require to dynamically change their behavior. With current reprogramming technology, such an adaptation is still an open issue, as it can be achieved either at the expense of significant energy consumption or through software complexity. The challenge is to achieve WSN systems that not only embed intelligence into environments, but also have embedded intelligence for reprogramming themselves after their deployment. The workshop aims at stimulating researchers and practitioners in embedded software, autonomic computing, ad-hoc networking and all other relevant areas to present their ideas and work in progress for advancing the technologies that enable adaptive WSN applications. The expected number of participants will be 15.
