International PhD Workshop on Ad Hoc and Wireless Networks PhD-NOW'08
(http://www.senzations.net/phd-nowworkshop)
To be held in conjunction with the 7th International Conference on AdHOC
Networks and Wireless Ad Hoc - NOW 2008
(http://www-sop.inria.fr/mascotte/adhocnow/workshop.html)
September 10-12, 2008, Sophia Antipolis, France
----------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
===============
The PhD-NOW seminar aims to provide a friendly and supportive atmosphere
where PhD students can present their ongoing research, get constructive
feedback and learn what problems are being tackled by the fellow
students. More importantly, it also provides a venue for all students to
"network" with each other, as well as with the established researchers,
obtain valuable guidance and tips, and participate in a forum designed
specifically to benefit graduate students. We particularly encourage PhD
students from the EU convergence regions and Western Balkan countries to
take part in the workshop. The seminar is supported by the PROSENSE, FP7
Support Action project .
Applicants should be far enough into their PhD to have a concrete
proposal, and have initially outlined the most important issues and
proposed research methodology. Selected abstracts will appear in the
AdHOC-NOW proceedings. Comprehensive surveys of the state-of-the-art in
relevant technologies are also encouraged.
Format
The PhD workshop will be a one-day, seminar-style event, consisting of
short presentations followed by roundtable discussions. Time will be
allotted to each student for the presentation, and for the following
in-depth discussion.
Submission
Topics of interest are the same as those for the main conference
(http://www-sop.inria.fr/mascotte/adhocnow/index.html). All submissions
should include:
1. A research summary (2-3 pages) describing the work in progress,
and including a 100 word abstract. Things to consider for inclusion in
the research summary might be: the expected contribution; the original
idea or thesis statement; the problem domain and the specific problem
addressed; a brief overview of related work; the methodological
approach; research carried out and results obtained so far.
2. Student's CV, including the names and affiliations of the
research advisor(s), and expected date of dissertation submission
The research summary and biographical sketch should be prepared
according to the formatting instruction at the LNCS web site and
submitted as PDF files. All contributions should be submitted using the
EasyChair conference management system (link to be provided). All
research submissions will be reviewed.

ACM SenSys 2008: Call for Papers
The 6th ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems
November 5-7, 2008
Raleigh, NC, USA
http://sensys.acm.org/2008/
============================================================================
The 6th ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems (SenSys) is a
highly selective, single-track forum for the presentation of research results
on systems issues in the area of embedded, networked sensors. Distributed
systems based on networked sensors and actuators with embedded computation
capabilities enable an instrumentation of the physical world at an
unprecedented scale and density, thus enabling a new generation of monitoring
and control applications. This conference provides an ideal venue to address
the research challenges facing the design, deployment, use, and fundamental
limits of these systems. Sensor networks require contributions from many
fields, from wireless communication and networking, embedded systems and
hardware, distributed systems, data management, and applications, so we
welcome cross-disciplinary work.
We particularly encourage papers that extend the scope of the conference
beyond wireless mote-class sensor networks and we seek contributions from a
broad range of sensing-related fields, such as actuator networks, RFID
applications, mobile ad-hoc networks, camera networks, and others. We seek
technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research results.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Sensor network architecture and protocols
* Rich sensor systems leveraging RFID, mobile devices (e.g., cell phones),
cameras, robotics, etc.

Call for Papers (Deadline: April 14, 2008)
International Workshop on
Cyber-Physical Systems Challenges and Applications (CPS-CA'08)
http://www.hurray.isep.ipp.pt/cps-ca08
11-Jun-2008
Santorini Island, Greece
in conjunction with the 4th IEEE International Conference on
Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems (DCOSS'08) - http://www.dcoss.org
OVERVIEW
Although the IT transformation in the 20th century appeared
revolutionary, a bigger change is probably yet to come. The term
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) has come to describe the research
and technological effort that will ultimately efficiently allow
interlinking the real world physical objects and cyberspace.
Actually, a few other terms have been used to describe similar
endeavors. The term "Internet of Things", originally aiming at
RFID technologies, is smoothly becoming synonymous for cyber-physical
systems.
The integration of physical processes and computing is not new.
Embedded systems have been in place since a long time to denote
systems that combine physical processes with computing. The
revolution will come from massively networking embedded computing
devices which will allow instrumenting the physical world with
pervasive networks of sensor-rich, embedded computation.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
In the long-term, one can expect networks with millions nodes in
operation. Such Large-scale sensor-rich networked systems will
generate an enormous amount of data and important challenges need
to be addressed. A Cyber-Physical System integrates computing,
communication and storage of information with monitoring and
control of physical entities, in a timely, reliable, secure,
efficient and safe manner. In large-scale systems, these are often
contradictory requirements, and numerous technical challenges
are posed, including architectures, networks and platforms, OS
and middleware, heterogeneous system composition, etc. These
technical challenges span a number of CPS applications, including:
critical infrastructure monitoring; transportation and automotive
networks; power grid management; disaster response; precision
agriculture; tele-physical services; structural monitoring; etc.
FORMAT OF THE WORKSHOP
The workshop will feature invited talks, including keynotes, panel
discussions and submitted contributions.
PAPER SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Submitted papers should follow the IEEE conference format and
should not exceed 6 pages in length. File formats can be either
pdf or postscript. All submissions will be handled electronically
via email. Submissions must be sent to the workshop program chair,
Prof. Eduardo Tovar (emt(a)dei.isep.ipp.pt), before the submission
deadline (April 14, 2008).

service and seamless handoff across a multitude of wireless networks.
The key concept is integrating the 4G capabilities with all of the
existing mobile technologies. Special maneuvers will be necessary
amongst different access systems in terms of horizontal (intrasystem)
and vertical (inter-system) handoff as well as seamless mobility,
Quality of Service (QoS), dependability and security. In this
workshop, we solicit high quality papers from leading researchers that
present state-of-the-art research in heterogeneous wireless networks
dealing with resource management techniques and QoS provisioning.

CALL FOR PAPERS
***********************************************************************
The First ACM International Workshop on Mobile Entity Localization and
Tracking in GPS-less Environments (MELT 2008)
URL: http://www.parc.com/MELT08
San Francisco, California, September 19, 2008,
co-located with ACM MobiCom08
***********************************************************************
Location-awareness is a key component for achieving context-awareness.
Recent years have witnessed an increasing trend of location-based services
and applications. In most cases, however, location information is limited
by the accessibility to GPS, which is unavailable for indoor or underground
facilities and unreliable in urban environments. Much research has been
done,
in both the sensor network community and the ubiquitous computing
community,
to provide techniques for localization and tracking in GPS-less
environments.
Novel applications based on ad-hoc localization and real-time tracking of
mobile entities are growing as a result of these technologies. It is time
to bring leaders from both the academic and industry research
communities to
discuss challenging and open problems, to evaluate pros and cons of various
approaches, to bridge the gap between theory and applications, and to
envision new research opportunities in MELT.
The workshop seeks to provide a forum for the state-of-the-art technologies
in mobile localization and tracking and novel applications of
location-based
services. The one-day workshop will have a combination of invited talks,
technical presentations and discussions.
Possible topics of interests include, but are not limited to:
Technology topics:
* Algorithms for Localization and Tracking
* Opportunistic Localization (using existing signals in the environment)
* Environment Mapping and Map Representations
* Dynamic/ad-hoc Mapping of Environments
* Cheap and Accurate Sensing for MELT (RF, Ultrasound, IR, UWB, RFID etc.)
* Collaborative Localization and Data Fusion
* Combined Camera/Sensor Localization and Tracking
* Hybrid Location-Determination (e.g., RF+vision)
* Secure and Robust Localization
Application topics:
* Search and Rescue Operations
* Asset Tracking/Yard Management
* Material/In-process flow control
* Inventory Tracking + Location
* Vehicular Tracking in Intelligent Transportation Systems
* Sports and Entertainment
* Indoor Navigators/Activity Recommenders
* Automatic/Robotic Warehouses/Factories

* Atlanta, Georgia, September 29 - October 02 2008 *
***********************************************************************
SUBJECT AND SCOPE
-----------------
This workshop covers comprehensively the algorithmic issues in the hot area
of ad hoc and sensor networking. In particular, sensor networks are
currently recognized as one of the priority research areas and research
activities are booming recently.
This workshop concentrates on network layer problems like data communication
(routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and
topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor
elimination, etc.). The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or
greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global
information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple
local node behavior achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols
provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an
arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan.
The objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research
results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area
of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Medium access control
* Analytical, mobility and validation models
* Hybrid networks and wireless Internet
* Security in ad hoc networks
* Data management, query processing, and data delivery in sensor networks
* Unicast routing, multicasting, and broadcasting
* Geocasting and anycasting
* Energy-efficient and bandwidth-efficient protocols
* Quality of service in medium access control and routing
* Topology construction and maintenance
* Neighborhood discovery and mobility management
* Localized protocols for duty-cycled sensor networks
* Auto-configuration and network formation protocols and algorithms
* Relative positioning algorithms
* Lower bounds on information exchange required for localized solutions
* Network graph properties supporting localized protocols
* Worst and average case analysis on the deviation from optimal solutions
