CALL FOR PAPERS
ACM VANET 2008
Vehicle to Vehicle -- Vehicle to Roadside -- Vehicle to Internet
The Fifth ACM International Workshop on VehiculAr Inter-NETworking
In conjunction with ACM MobiCom 2008
Date: September 15, 2008
San Francisco, California, USA
Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE
http://www.sigmobile.org/workshops/vanet2008/
Important Dates (tentative):
Paper Submission Deadline: April 13th
Notification of Acceptance: June 6th
Camera-Ready Deadline: June 27th
The goal of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances in
the development of vehicular inter-networking (VANET) technologies.
Based on short- and medium-range communication as well as on cellular
systems, vehicular inter-networking will enable vehicular safety
applications (including collision and other safety warnings) as well as
non-safety applications (like real-time traffic congestion and routing
information, high-speed tolling, mobile infotainment, and many others).
The creation of high-performance, highly reliable, highly scalable,
secure, and privacy-preserving VANET technologies presents an
extraordinary challenge for the wireless research community. A high
degree of communication reliability is needed under unfavorable
conditions. Clearly, the specificity of vehicular inter-networking in
terms of mobility behavior, applications scenarios, and application
requirements makes VANET research an exciting and demanding application-
and purpose-driven sub-discipline of wireless networking.
Furthermore, VANET present a very active field of research, development,
standardization, and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many
national and international projects in government, industry, and
academia devoted to VANET. These include consortia like Vehicle Safety
Consortium (US), Car-2-Car Communication Consortium (Europe), and
Advanced Safety Vehicle Program (Japan), standardization efforts like
IEEE 802.11p (WAVE), and field trials like the large-scale Vehicle
Infrastructure Integration Program (VII) in the US.
Following the successes of VANET 2004 held in Philadelphia, VANET 2005
held in Cologne, Germany, VANET 2006 in Los Angeles, CA, and VANET 2007
in Montréal, QC, Canada, the Fifth ACM International Workshop on
Vehicular Inter-Networking (VANET) will be held in San Francisco, CA in
conjunction with MobiCom 2008.
Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research related to
the theory or practice of vehicular inter-networking (VANET). All
submissions must describe original research, not published or currently
under review for another workshop, conference, or journal.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Channel modeling
- Modulation and coding
- Power control and scalability issues
- Medium access control protocols
- Multi-channel organization and operation
- Communication protocol design
- Safety and non-safety applications
- Vehicle-to-vehicle/roadside/Internet communication
- Simulation frameworks
- Field operational testing
- Network management
- Security issues and countermeasures
- Privacy issues
Submission Instructions
All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Papers must be in
PDF format, no longer than 10 pages (single- or double-column), in font
no smaller than 11 points, and must fit properly on US Letter-sized
paper (8.5 inch x 11 inch) with reasonable margins. Submitted papers
will be judged based on their quality through a double-blind review
process, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the
reviewers. Detailed instructions for paper submission will be posted on

below stated areas.
* IMPORTANT DATES:
***********************************
10 April, 2008 Submission deadline
***********************************
19 May, 2008 Notification of acceptance
2 June, 2008 Final manuscript
15 Sept, 2008 Workshop
* SCOPE:
With diversification of wireless access technologies and
their application fields, the role of wireless access is
no longer the last hop terminal access, but also for
repeating functionality such as mesh/multi-hop/ad-hoc/sensor
networking. Thereby more complicated wireless networking,
especially radio resource management is required to well
organize whole the networks. In such cases, it is almost
impossible to optimally conduct wireless resource management
based on a centralized control policy. Rather, distributed
and/or cooperative control techniques should be introduced
in necessary parts in any layer, such as distributed antenna,
cognitive radio, distributed MAC, and dynamic heterogeneous
networking. To systematize an academic basis of this new
research field and to discuss the adaptability of these new
technologies to enhance the performance of wireless
distributed networks (WDN), the workshop named WDN 2008
will be held. In order to achieve such purpose, we believe
that cross layer discussions among researchers in the
field of physical, MAC, and network layers are required.
WDN 2008 will be held in conjunction with PIMRC 2008,
as part of the conference workshops to make up various
contributions as well as invited contributions from many
research fields related to wireless distributed networks.
* TOPICS AREAS:
The main purpose of this workshop is to systematize an
academic basis over the various topics in wireless
distributed networks as listed below, and to discuss
the adaptability of these new technologies to enhance
the performance of wireless distributed networks.
- Application
Ad-hoc network, Multi-hop network,
Mesh network, Sensor network, Cognitive radio,
heterogeneous network, and cooperative transmission system
- Technology
Network coding, Super position coding, Cooperative sensing,

CALL FOR PAPERS
SPECIAL SESSION
*** Mobile Mixed Reality Games ***
3rd International Conference on Digital Interactive Media
in Entertainment and Arts (DIMEA 2008)
10-12 September 2008, Athens, Greece
http://www.dimea2008.org
Submission Deadline: April 30, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------
Mobile Mixed Reality games are games that are played in a physical
environment augmented with virtual game artifacts. While former Mixed
Reality applications were mainly stationary, advances in mobile computing
and positioning technology have made this new type of games possible.
Players wear mobile computers equipped with positioning technology,
head-mounted displays, laptops, personal digital assistants, or mobile
phones in order to play this kind of games.
Early prototypes such as ARQuake, Human Pacman, or NetAttack showed the
technical feasibility but also the potentials of mobile Mixed Reality games.
Players find it fascinating to play their own avatar, to physically move in
the game world and to directly interact and compete with their co-players.
The close integration of Mixed Reality games in the physical environment
offers a new player experience that cannot be achieved with traditional
computer or console games.
While the technology has matured since the first games in this field leading
to Mixed Reality systems running on off-the-shelf computers and there are
already some related commercial systems available such as Sony's Eye of
Judgment, many issues related to the design, development and evaluation of
mobile Mixed Reality games are still open and need to be further researched.
We would like to invite papers to be submitted to this special session of
DIMEA 2008 that focus on one or several issues of Mobile Mixed Reality Games
including but not limited to:
. Design and evaluation of Augmented Reality and MR games
. Design guidelines for Augmented Reality or MR games
. Ethical issues of mobile Mixed Reality games
. Positioning technology for MR games including marker-based and marker-less
tracking
. MR hardware and software systems for games
. Tools for rapid prototyping of MR games
In the special session we will bring together researcher and practioneers
who work in this new and emerging field of MR games. The session will draw
the attention to the potentials of this new form of media in entertainment
and will push the state-of-the-art in this field.
*** SUBMISSIONS ***
Please note that the submission and review of papers for the Special Session
will be conducted through the same on-line system (www.dimea2008.org) used
for regular papers. Papers submitted to the Special Session should follow
the same style as regular DIMEA papers.
Authors are invited to submit full technical papers of not more than 8
pages, including tables, figures and references. Papers should present
original research related to the above mentioned scientific areas, not
published elsewhere.
Full paper submissions should adhere to the ACM SIG Proceedings style
guidelines. The respective templates may be found at:

INTER-PERF 2008
Third International Workshop on Interdisciplinary Systems Approach in
Performance Evaluation and Design of Computer & Communication Systems
October 24, 2008, Athens, Greece
http://www.inter-perf.org
Full Papers due: June 1, 2008
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
Communication networks is now a diverse area featuring sensor networks,
mobile networks, ad hoc networks, and various application layer
networks. A great deal of current research focuses on the networking
aspect of interacting computer systems, which are typically large scale
and highly dynamic. Interestingly, operational principles of these
networking systems may exhibit great similarity with complex systems
found in other sciences, when studied at an appropriate level of
abstraction. This observation suggests that models and techniques
developed in other sciences can potentially be used in order to
evaluate and understand the performance of existing communication
systems and also to drive design of new ones.
The workshop aims at getting together researchers and practitioners
from diverse areas, including biology, economics, physics, artificial
intelligence and social sciences, to present their contributions
applicable to performance evaluation and design of computer &
communications systems. In particular this third edition of the
workshop will focus on completely distributed self-organizing systems.
Approaches from the following research areas are considered of
particular interest:
* Biology
* Microeconomics
* Mechanism design
* Multiple agent systems
* Social networks
