Call for Papers: IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics
Special issue on
"Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems: new trends in computing
and communications"
Submission deadline: January 30, 2020
============================================
Scope and topics
----------------
Stimulated by the rise of Industry 4.0, as well as by the
pervasiveness of Information Communication Technologies (ICT), intense
research in Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPS) is emerging for
several applications. The further integration of the Internet of
Things within the ICPS scenario triggered considerable research
efforts within the new Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) paradigm,
with application scenarios like smart factories, smart energy grids,
smart transportation systems, etc. One of the defining features of
ICPS is the involvement of a large amount of cooperative computational
elements tasked with the control of time-critical and mission-critical
physical entities. These strict requirements are also shared by the
IIoT scenario to provide unprecedented vertical integration,
specialized high-level services, enhanced interoperability and
availability. Furthermore, an ever more rising and ubiquitous trend in
this IIoT context is represented by Digital Twins, where a real-time
update of a large amount of data from the physical system is required
to update the corresponding digital replica. As a consequence, both
the computing architecture and the communication networks and
protocols call for novel paradigms, albeit satisfying stringent low
latency, high reliability and availability, safety, and security
requirements. Traditional computing and communication and paradigms
are not properly equipped to fulfill all these requirements, as they
are typically designed to optimize different performance metrics and
application scenarios. Hence, new paradigms are emerging,
significantly changing the landscape of industrial automation systems
and networks. In the computational realm, edge/fog computing is
gaining popularity to leverage the enhanced capabilities of end
devices, and at the same time, the interest in virtualization
techniques is steadily increasing, with the aim of increasing the
quality, timeliness and reliability of time-critical tasks. The new
generations of communication systems, both wired and wireless, are
also focused on ultra-reliable and ultra-low latency information
delivery, as well as on enhanced features to enable time- sensitive
operations, highlighted by the developing 5G and TSN standards. A
common trend in both areas is the increasing adoption of approaches
based on machine/deep learning to improve the adaptiveness of such
system to different applications and environments.
This special section will focus on (but not limited to) the following
topics:
- Concepts, modeling, simulation and validation of ICPS and IIoT
- Emerging applications of industrial and smart CPS in healthcare,
mining, logistics, transportation, energy, manufacturing, etc. -
Security and safety solutions for ICPS
- Interoperability and standardization for computing, intelligence and
communication in the ICPS and IIoT scenarios
- Cloud, edge and fog computing for ICPS and IIoT: resource allocation
and management, network slicing, etc.
- Big data analysis for ICPS real-time control
- Fog-based deployment and management of AI applications in ICPS
- Machine learning techniques in real-time closed loop control
- Partitioning of machine learning frameworks over fog/edge
infrastructure
- Real-time data storage, distribution, and analytics
- Virtualization of computing resources
- Digital Twins in the IIoT scenario
- Blockchain technologies for the Industry 4.0
- High performance industrial wireless and wired communications
- Emerging cellular networks for critical control systems
- Convergence of industrial wired and wireless networks
- Cross layer design of computing and communications with enhanced
performance

The 21st Annual International Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and
Applications (ACM HotMobile 2020)
https://hotmobile.org/2020/
Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE
March 3-4, 2020
Austin, Texas, USA
Call for Papers
ACM HotMobile 2020, the Twenty-first International Workshop on Mobile
Computing Systems and Applications continues the series of highly
selective, interactive workshops focused on mobile applications, systems,
and environments, as well as their underlying state-of-the-art
technologies. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for
presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches.
We solicit submissions of papers that (1) focus primarily on systems and
applications and (2) propose new directions of research, advocate
non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy
and discussion. We especially encourage papers that identify fundamental
open questions, advocate a new approach, offer a constructive critique of
the state-of-the-art, debunk existing assumptions, report unexpected early
results, report on promising but unproven ideas, or propose new evaluation
methods. Novel ideas need not be supported by full evaluations;
well-reasoned arguments or preliminary evaluations suffice. The program
committee will explicitly favor early work and papers likely to stimulate
reflection and discussion over a “6-pages conference paper.”
We take a broad view of Mobile Systems research. This includes:
· Novel applications, environments, and devices supporting mobility.
· Operating system and distributed system support for mobile
computing.
· Wearable computing, internet of things, edge computing, sensing,
and context-awareness.
· HCI issues related to mobile computing.
· Security and privacy of mobile computing.
· Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting
mobility.
· Wireless technology, as it pertains to mobile systems and
applications.
The deadline for submissions is *October 15, 2019, 11:59pm EDT*. Acceptance
notifications will be sent by December 15, 2018.
Presenting at HotMobile is a good way to get early feedback on research
ideas at least one year away from a full-fledged conference submission to
ACM MobiSys or other high-quality conferences. A full-length paper on the
same topic submitted to a conference in less than a year is unlikely to
include sufficient new material and mature ideas to warrant publication.
As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not
be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Papers accompanied by
nondisclosure agreement forms are not acceptable and will be returned to
the author(s) unread. As customary with the scientific peer review process,
submissions will be handled as confidential material during the review.
Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format,
including all references, figures and tables. The submissions should not be
anonymous. The submissions must meet the following formatting requirements:
· Font size no smaller than 10pt.
· Font size of the bibliography no smaller than 9pt.
· Double column format with each column having dimensions 9.25 inches x
3.33 inches, a space of 0.33 inches between the two columns, and with no
more than 55 lines of text per column.
· Fit properly on US letter-sized paper (8.5 inches x 11 inches).
We recommend the use of the "sigconf" ACM proceedings template, available
at: http://www.acm.org/, with the font size of the main body amended to
10pt. An example Tex document can be found here. For more submission
guidelines, please visit the conference website. Please note that it is the
responsibility of the authors to ensure that the submissions are meeting
all formatting requirements.

The papers accepted to HotMobile 2020 will be publicly available from the
workshop's website for a limited time window, as per ACM's Digital
Library's Policy.

Lowering energy consumption is one of the most pursued goals of next
generation wireless communication to ensure long-term applications. In
recent years, wake-up radio has emerged, enabling pure asynchronous
wireless communication that eliminates energy waste due to idle
listening. These devices allow continuous channel monitoring while
consuming orders of magnitude less power than traditional
transceivers. On the one hand, many efforts are made to design wake-up
radio circuit with low power consumption and low sensitivity. On the
other hand, this technology changes network paradigm as dedicated
access and network protocols should be designed.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers both from
academia and industry to exchange and share their experiences and
research results related to wake-up radio emerging technology.
Specific topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Wake-Up radio circuit and architecture design
- Coding, modulation and signal processing for Wake-Up radio
- Heterogeneous communication (or Multi-transceiver) and protocols
- MAC protocol leveraging Wake-up radio
- Cross-layer design for Wake-Up radio
- Communication and networking for wireless systems using Wake-Up

*Special Issue on *
Resource Management of IoT Edge devices: Challenges, Techniques, and
Solutions
*Software: Practice and Experience (Wiley Press) *
*Call for Papers *
With the growth of Internet of things (IoT) paradigm, there has been a
tremendous makeshift in how the distributed devices work to achieve a
common goal. However, it remains essential that all these devices work in a
coherent manner to perform a collective action. This makes the task of
resource provisioning extremely important in such a paradigm. The end-user
level in IoT mostly comprise of the low computation and communication
powered devices. An improper utilization of the available resources in such
a scenario burdens the complete system and degrades the quality of service.
In such a scenario, the use of cloud computing techniques can help to
manage the resources effectively.
More so, with the emergence of relatively newer cloud-based technologies
such as edge and fog computing, resource management in the IoT has become
far more effective. These technologies bring the computation and
communication capabilities closer to the IoT devices where some of the
services can be offloaded to the edge devices. These devices are called IoT
edge devices and they provide a unique opportunity to tackle some of the
existing and pertinent issues for resource management in IoT paradigms; yet
at the same time, they face their own set of challenges. However, the use
of IoT edge devices in a traditional IoT paradigm results in better
utilization of the available resources as well as improving the overall
quality of service.
Keeping this in mind, this special issue will address the resource
management in IoT edge devices with the focus on various challenges faced,
and potential techniques and solutions to address such challenges by
leveraging IoT edge devices. The researchers, both at the academic and
industrial level, working on resource management in IoT edge devices can
share their latest results to create wider awareness about their schemes.
The topics of interest include (but not necessarily limited to):
- Resource provisioning using IoT edge devices
- Improving quality of service using IoT edge devices
- Novel architectures for integrating IoT models with edge devices
- Use of advanced learning methods such as artificial intelligence and
deep learning for resource management in IoT edge devices
- Exploiting edge devices for computation offloading in IoT paradigms
- Analysis of overheads and requirements for using IoT edge devices

AWAKE: 1st Workshop on Wake-Up radio technologies for next generation
wireless communications
While low power communication has evolved towards multi-kilometer ranges
and low bit-rate schemes in recent years, a tradeoff must still be made
between power consumption and latency. However, the time of making such
trade-off could be over thanks to the emerging technology of Wake-Up radio.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers both from
academia and industry to exchange and share their experiences and research
results related to Wake-Up radio emerging technology.

OBSN: 1st workshop on On-Body Sensor Networks
Mobile phones have in the past decades turned into sensor-rich devices,
accompanied by a large set of extra wearable devices that can be worn on
the wrist, arm, hip, around our chests, in front of our eyes, or in our
ears. These devices have enriched our way of monitoring our health, keeping
track of our fitness, or have improved the way we interact with digital
content around us, allowing for instance gestural interactions or activity
recognition. This workshop sets out to focus on wearable and networked
sensing and actuating devices, and the different methods that are required
to keep such devices’ design small and comfortable enough to wear.

FAILSAFE: 2nd International Workshop on the Engineering of Reliable,
Robust, and Secure Embedded Wireless Sensing Systems
Embedded networked sensor systems, such as those found in WSN, IoT, CPS,
etc, promise a revolution in monitoring and control. However, real-world
examples are proving notoriously difficult to deploy and maintain, and as
yet only relatively small scale successes have been published. This
workshop will provide a forum to combine the experiences of international
researchers, to create a systematic understanding of the challenges of
building systems in the face of system and environmental instability,
pointing the way towards a science of sensor systems software.

MaDeLoRa: 1st International Workshop on Massive LoRa Deployments:
Challenges and Solutions
LoRa supports various PHY layer parameter settings which impact
reliability, coverage, scalability, energy consumption, data rate etc.
Network operator have some control on the parameters of the sensor
associated with them and are concerned with network planning and capacity.
The application designers and end users need to know how to get their
needed level of reliability and they have to take into account the
specifics of the technology. The aim of this workshop is to shed the light
on the main challenges and solutions of Low Power Wide Area Networks
(LPWAN) based on LoRa technology. We solicit contributions in this area
from researchers and practitioners in both the academia and industry.

Tutorial1. FIT IoT Lab tutorial: End-to-end application with IoT-LAB testbed
Through this tutorial, you will learn how to program your own application
to publish data issued from remote sensors on a web dashboard. You will be
free to choose your favorite OS (Contiki-NG, RIOT, etc) and play with
different sensor nodes. The tutorial will be run using the FIT IoT LAB
testbed which offers remote and free access to thousands of heterogeneous
sensor nodes and communication technologies (802.15.4, BLE, LoRa, Wi-Fi).
Some of them are deployed in Lyon, in the building where the tutorial will
take place.
You will advance at your own pace, assisted by the FIT IoT LAB engineers
team and will have the opportunity to explore some of the features and
technologies provided by the testbed.
Tutorial 2. A tutorial on Visible Light Communication: An Academic and
Industrial Perspective
The Enlight'em consortium invites the research community to a tutorial on
Visible Light Communication (VLC). The tutorial will have two main parts.
The first part will have strong academic content and will cover four areas:
(1) Hardware Layer: Optical materials used as transmitters and receivers,
(2) Physical Layer: Modulation techniques used to avoid flickering, (3) MAC
Layer: Techniques used to share the visible light spectrum, and (4) State
of the art: Discussion on the various research directions using visible
light for communication and sensing.
The second part will have strong industrial content and will cover four
main areas. (1) Current products in the market, (2) Discussion on the
future market and prospective applications, (3) Ongoing work on the R&D
labs of some companies, and (4) Compliance with standards.
The first part will be delivered during the morning, and the second in the
afternoon. Attendees will be able to choose if they want to attend only one
or both tutorials.
