Submission Deadline: October 1, 2019
Overview: With the recent advances in wireless communications, the automotive industry is leading to evolution. To succeed in this emerging era of technology, the Internet of Connected Vehicles (IoCV) has emerged as one of the potential applications of the Internet of Things (IoT). It refers to the dynamic mobile communication systems that communicate between vehicles and public networks to enhance the connectivity between cars via technology. By offering a wide variety of infotainment services, fleet operations, and in-vehicle applications, IoCV has gained the tremendous capacity to provide a safer and sustainable transportation system to the society. According to Gartner Inc., “the connected car is already a reality, and in-vehicle wireless connectivity is expanding rapidly”. As a result, the evolution of cars into the IoT will keep on accelerating the global market which is expected to grow by 270 percent by 2022. Further, the increasing deployment of sensors and ever-evolving cognitive technology open up new opportunities for IoCV. Due to these significant developments, connected vehicles are receiving widespread attention from the major automotive giants such as Tesla, BMW, Waymo (Google), Uber, Volvo, etc. Despite all the opportunities offered by the IoCV, their highly dynamic topology and the increasing number of vehicles pose challenges regarding delivering low-latency vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications.
The fifth generation (5G) wireless networks emerge as a critical provider to handle the stringent connectivity requirements of IoCV. Moreover, with the development of massive multiple-input- multiple-output (MIMO), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), terahertz (THz) frequencies, millimetre-wave (mmWave), and heterogeneous networks (HetNets), 5G intends to guarantee new capabilities related to connectivity, data rates, transmission delay, throughput and moreover quality of experience (QoE). Thus, integrating 5G cellular systems into IoCV is a promising technology to achieve the goals mentioned above. However, as we are moving towards the 5G communication era, the data generated by connected vehicles is expected to grow exponentially; which in turn brings significant challenges to 5G. Therefore, to promote productivity, improve efficiency, and ensure the efficient handling of continuous growing data, it requires the support of high computing paradigm that can process the data with minimum delays. To accomplish these objectives, a programmable and scalable network paradigm is the need of the hour that can provide a variety of services to 5G-envisioned IoCV in diversified scenarios.
In this direction, software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) have gained much attention from the research fraternity. They rely more on network programmability to realize efficient network services. However, this traditional device-to-device management paradigm falls short while dealing with 5G mobile networks as it is characterized by a humongous cycle of connected devices. To overcome these problems, intent-based networking (IBN) has evolved as one of the paradigm shifts which combines automation with intelligence. Typically, IBN is composed of four essential elements namely, translation and validation, automated implementation, awareness of network state, and assurance and dynamic optimization/remediation; which takes the networking strategy to a higher level. Due to these fundamental elements, IBN holds excellent potential for reliable network support with quick turnaround and scalable services. Additionally, it also facilitates simplified network operations with seamless integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning. This, in turn, provides more opportunities to build more robust and efficient network designs for 5G-envisioned IoCV.
Thus, this special issue intends to offer an opportunity for researchers (both from industry and academia) to present the dedicated efforts on the key theories, innovative schemes, and significant applications for realizing QoS in 5G-envisioned IoCV communication. This special issue mainly focuses on collecting the original contributions related to IBN-IoCV amalgamation in 5G wireless networks, which aims to provide high-performance scalable computing to connected vehicles while advancing the V2X communication infrastructure.
Topics of interest to this special issue include, but are not limited to:
-New opportunities/challenges/ use cases for IBN in 5G enabled IoCV
-Machine learning and optimisation-based algorithms, tools and solutions
-Distributed mobility management and network intelligence
-New architecture and communication protocols

Call for Papers: IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics
Special issue on
"Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems: new trends in computing
and communications"
Submission deadline: October 30, 2019
============================================
Scope and topics
----------------
Stimulated by the rise of Industry 4.0, as well as by the
pervasiveness of Information Communication Technologies (ICT), intense
research in Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPS) is emerging for
several applications. The further integration of the Internet of
Things within the ICPS scenario triggered considerable research
efforts within the new Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) paradigm,
with application scenarios like smart factories, smart energy grids,
smart transportation systems, etc. One of the defining features of
ICPS is the involvement of a large amount of cooperative computational
elements tasked with the control of time-critical and mission-critical
physical entities. These strict requirements are also shared by the
IIoT scenario to provide unprecedented vertical integration,
specialized high-level services, enhanced interoperability and
availability. Furthermore, an ever more rising and ubiquitous trend in
this IIoT context is represented by Digital Twins, where a real-time
update of a large amount of data from the physical system is required
to update the corresponding digital replica. As a consequence, both
the computing architecture and the communication networks and
protocols call for novel paradigms, albeit satisfying stringent low
latency, high reliability and availability, safety, and security
requirements. Traditional computing and communication and paradigms
are not properly equipped to fulfill all these requirements, as they
are typically designed to optimize different performance metrics and
application scenarios. Hence, new paradigms are emerging,
significantly changing the landscape of industrial automation systems
and networks. In the computational realm, edge/fog computing is
gaining popularity to leverage the enhanced capabilities of end
devices, and at the same time, the interest in virtualization
techniques is steadily increasing, with the aim of increasing the
quality, timeliness and reliability of time-critical tasks. The new
generations of communication systems, both wired and wireless, are
also focused on ultra-reliable and ultra-low latency information
delivery, as well as on enhanced features to enable time- sensitive
operations, highlighted by the developing 5G and TSN standards. A
common trend in both areas is the increasing adoption of approaches
based on machine/deep learning to improve the adaptiveness of such
system to different applications and environments.
This special section will focus on (but not limited to) the following
topics:
- Concepts, modeling, simulation and validation of ICPS and IIoT
- Emerging applications of industrial and smart CPS in healthcare,
mining, logistics, transportation, energy, manufacturing, etc. -
Security and safety solutions for ICPS
- Interoperability and standardization for computing, intelligence and
communication in the ICPS and IIoT scenarios
- Cloud, edge and fog computing for ICPS and IIoT: resource allocation
and management, network slicing, etc.
- Big data analysis for ICPS real-time control
- Fog-based deployment and management of AI applications in ICPS
- Machine learning techniques in real-time closed loop control
- Partitioning of machine learning frameworks over fog/edge
infrastructure
- Real-time data storage, distribution, and analytics
- Virtualization of computing resources
- Digital Twins in the IIoT scenario
- Blockchain technologies for the Industry 4.0
- High performance industrial wireless and wired communications
- Emerging cellular networks for critical control systems

Future Generation Computer Systems - Special Issue on
“Information-Centric Network enabler Communication for Internet of Things”
Link:
https://www.journals.elsevier.com/future-generation-computer-systems/call-f…
Scope:
Information-Centric Networking (ICN) has been proposed as an alternative
paradigm for future Internet and promising to replace the current
host-centric model. The communication in ICN is mainly based on the
content name instead of using host addresses. Hence, the content is
decoupled from its original location and may be cached in the network
infrastructure. Also, the use of content-based security makes ICN a
strong candidate for the future Internet, to fulfill user requirements,
improve the content distribution, and the overall network performance.
Under the concept of ICN, various architectures have been implemented
such as Content-Centric Networking (CCN) and Named Data Networking
(NDN). On the other hand, the Internet of Things (IoT) technology is
being widely applied to diverse domain-applications including smart
cities, smart homes, smart healthcare, smart grids, and smart
transportation. Things in the IoT ecosystem can collect data,
interconnect between each other and the Internet, processing and taking
decisions without human interaction. IoT communications and applications
are, in nature, information-based and follow content-oriented paradigm.
Hence, ICN may show promising performance on IoT, and help to overcome
different IoT challenges and application requirement including
addressing, heterogeneity, mobility, security, and scalability.
Potential topics include but not limited to the following:
• Advances architecture and application design for ICN-IoT.
• Standardized and unified content naming schemes.
• Energy and resource efficiency forwarding scheme.
• Distributed in-network caching placement strategies.
• Efficient cache replacement policies.
• Forwarding/caching in resource-constrained IoT devices.
• Secure pub-sub communication among IoT applications.
• Novel QoS provisioning for CCN/NDN architecture.
• Privacy, security, and trust for IoT applications.
• Resource constraints access control policies for IoT.
• Enable ICN communication for 5G-IoT networks.
• Lightweight cryptography algorithms for ICN-IoT networks.
• Experimental prototypes and test-bed for CCN/NDN in IoT.
• Analysis and evaluation of running CCN/NDN in large scale IoT networks.
• Business models of applying ICN in real IoT environment.
Important Dates:
• Submission deadline: October 01, 2019
• First round notification: December 15, 2019
• Second round due: February 15, 2020
• Final notification: March 15, 2020
