In the current cloud-based Internet-of-Things (IoT) model, smart devices (such as sensors, smartphones) exchange information through the Internet (routers and/or servers on cloud) to cooperate and provide services to users, which could be citizens, smart home systems, and industrial applications. Even though the cloud based IoT model describes a uniform, concise, and scalable solution for supporting IoT applications, the deployments of IoT applications on cloud, however, are facing the challenges originated from economic considerations, social concerns, technical limitations, and administrative issues. In real world, things (which could be cheap sensors) generate lots of data. Moving these big data from the network edge (end networking devices) to the network core (cloud computing servers) and vis verse naturally brings the following issues: (i) it is expensive for moving the big data through the Internet; (ii) the cost is prohibitively high when storing the big data on clouds; (iii) the Internet access may be unavailable, unreliable, and slow; (iv) the Internet access might be congested by the big data transmissions; (v) the Internet based transmissions may increase the probability of information leakage; (vi) the large number of things, which may have less or no security protection, may be easily utilized by hackers to start DDoS attacks; (vii) the administrative team may question the security, the easiness, and the availability of managing the big data saved on clouds. On the other hand, clouds may not be always necessary for implementing IoT solutions. For instances: (i) data generated by things may only be valuable for a group of users who are closely located; (ii) existing infrastructures may still be good and scaling up could be achieved by local resource sharing; and (iii) local mass data storage is already sufficient; etc. There is no doubt that the big data generated by things is surprisingly useful. Fog consists of all the smart computing/sensing systems that are around us, tied together. Typically, it includes a small data center that is placed close to the things in IoT. Fog computing is probably the most promising technology to support IoT applications while simultaneously and successfully addressing all the aforementioned challenges and issues. It adds a new dimension to IoT model for meeting the customers’ needs such as fast connection, high security, easy for management, infrastructure reuse, off load core network traffic, and scale quickly. Fog Computing are expected to support a wide range of IoT applications, including device-to-device data sharing, wearable cognitive assistance, video editing and sharing, vehicular systems, and etc. To address the arising new challenges and opportunities, we plan this feature topic issue to help both industry and academia research communities better understand the recent advances and potential research directions on the converging paths of IoT and Fog Computing. The papers in this feature topic issue will focus on the state-of-the-art research and the grant challenges in various aspects of Fog Computing for IoT. According to the United Nations, the elderly, defined as people over the age of 60, will make up 37% of the European population by 2050, from 20% in 2000. With ageing, probability increases of developing physical and cognitive impairments, requiring new and more effective ways to provide support and care. IoT technology may provide significant enhancement to quality of life for the elderly and, in general, people in need. Effective solutions for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) require appropriate ICT algorithms, architectures and platforms, that cannot leave out of consideration the development of new and innovative approaches, particularly in the area of pervasive and mobile systems. The personal communication between elderly people, their environment, and relevant groups of care givers is an important aspect in AAL; such a need for a pervasive connectivity may leverage the IoT capabilities, to connect humans to smart objects, and put smart objects at the service of users’ needs. At the same time, the realm of Active and Assisted Living may provide a way to capitalize the vast amount of research and knowledge developed up to know in the manifold aspects and facets of IoT. This workshop aims at investigating the close relationship among IoT and AAL, to identify effective approaches towards an increased Quality of Life for the current and future ageing populations. Among the different technical issues that have to be considered when designing IoT solutions for AAL, some of them emerge as critical, i.e.: low power communication technologies and energy-saving design at different layers, and in a cross-layer approach; security and privacy issues, both at the single node/object level, and in a system/platform perspective; big data, analytics, and signal processing for AAL enabled by an IoT approach; cloud and mobile cloud architectures supporting AAL through IoT. IoTAAL will bring researchers from the IoT field and the AAL field together, to foster a better common understanding, to exchange visions and latest research results addressing IoT specialization for AAL, to discuss promising new technologies and to highlight open research challenges. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. It serves as a forum for the sensing network research communities working on embedded sensing systems to discuss open issues, novel solutions, and the future development of wireless sensing in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realms of wireless sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, smart spaces, and all related disciplines. Nevertheless, applications that operate in such environments generate mission critical data that must be disseminated promptly and reliably, despite the challenging nature of the communication environment. Many years of research efforts have been invested into IP-based communication networks to achieve the above goals, but only resulted in limited success. The root cause of the difficulties is a fundamental mismatch between the IP-based communication model and the challenged environments. The former assumes communications through established stable infrastructures. It requires the creation and maintenance of end-to-end connectivity between senders and receivers, while neither the infrastructure nor end-to-end connectivity exists in the latter. The key to solving the problem is to identify a new communication model that makes effective use of the heterogeneous network resources of challenged environments, removes dependency on infrastructure components, and emphasizes data dissemination in lieu end-to-end connectivity. Information-Centric Networking (ICN) and Named Data Networking (NDN), as the most prominent realization of the ICN vision, have emerged in recent years as promising directions to address the above stated challenges. By its name, this new networking model focuses on information (named data) retrieval, instead of reachability between nodes and locations. Therefore, it can circumvent the lack of persistent connectivity in challenged environments by focusing on moving data instead of end-to-end connectivity, utilizing any connectivity, as it comes into existence, to move data hop-by-hop towards requesting parties. This workshop aims to provide a timely venue for all interested parties to exchange their ideas and initial results in applying the NDN paradigm to: address the communication needs of mission critical applications in challenged environments, explore different design options, and identify design tradeoffs. Over the last few years, a global research and development community has grown around the idea of ICN. The Technical Program Committee of ACM ICN 2016 invites high-quality submissions describing unpublished research results in all aspects of ICN.
