CALL FOR PAPERS JOURNAL OF NETWORK AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT http://www.cstp.umkc.edu/jnsm/ Special Issue on Self-Managing Systems and Networks Submission Deadline: June 30, 2004 Recent activities in distributed processing and network management aim at building self-managing and self-organizing computing systems and networks. Their goal is to automate some or all of the tasks typically carried out by an administrator or management system. This concept takes the distributed management paradigm one step further by providing managed resources with a very high degree of autonomy. Self-managing systems will be able to detect failures or performance degradations, initiate diagnostic procedures, and carry out corrective actions on their own. Their ability to discover changes in the environment will enable Self-managing Systems to adapt and optimize their behavior. Self-management is particularly important for mobile systems, since mobile environments are highly dynamic and consist of a very large number of managed systems. This special issue will cover infrastructures, techniques, and methods that can be used to design, implement and deploy such self-managing systems. Papers whose contributions are supported by experimental evaluations are strongly encouraged. Paper submissions should not exceed 15 single-spaced, single column pages including figures, tables, and references, using a typeface no smaller than 10 points. Papers must be electronically submitted to the conference website at www.electronicimaging.org. Please also submit a 500-word text abstract with your paper submission that includes your topic area. An important attribute of such networks is that they can be deployed "on demand" with minimal planning and management effort as well as with little dependency on existing network infrastructures. Concepts like ambient intelligence and disappearing computers that are part of a global and fully self-organized Internet hint at the scope of this vision, but also at the formidable challenges that come with it. For this conference we request submissions of high quality research papers on "wireless on demand networks" that provide novel insights on protocol and network design, modelling and performance evaluation, pricing and profitability models, QoS models, practical implementations, service level aspects and Internet integration of wireless networks.
