The aim of CHINACOM is to bring together Chinese and International players
in networking and communications under one roof, building a showcase in
communications and networking research in China.
China's information technology industry and research have been developing at
an enormous pace in the last 20 years. Currently China has the largest
wireless mobile and the second largest Internet subscriber population in the
world. By the end of 2005, the mobile phone users have reached 388 million
(19% of the world market), and the number will be over 500 million by 2008
and over 150 million will be multimedia applications. Internet users have
exceeded 100 million (half of them are broadband service subscribers). The
total sale of optical cables & fibers reached 15 million kilometers in 2004,
with the sale of the whole optical communication facility market reaching
1.5 billion USD. Furthermore, business/market factors in this area in China
are unique since they are Government driven and mixed with culture,
technology, and market forces.
CHINACOM is being positioned as the premier international annual conference

*Call For Papers*
* Special Issue on IMS as Service Delivery Platform for Converged Networks:
Architecture, Protocols, and Applications *
*IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine*
The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is globally considered as the common
platform for providing a unified session control on top of various access
network technologies for realizing flexible multimedia applications. IMS is
also driving the notion of Next Generation Networks and Fixed Mobile
Convergence by merging the fixed and mobile telecommunication networks with
the Internet and the adoption of IP technologies within the telecom domain.
>From a technology perspective the IMS represents conceptually a combination
of fixed and mobile networks from the telecom domain with emerging VoIP and
Internet applications in order to implement a seamless multimedia service
environment. The international standardization of IMS was initiated by the
Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in 2000 and has resulted in
first commercial implementations and first trial deployments around the
world providing first experiences. The introduction of IMS is challenged
today by the questions around business cases, IMS killer applications,
migration strategies and interworking issues with existing and upcoming
network and service platforms in converging networks.
*Topics*
In this special issue we would like to provide a snapshot of the
state-of-the-art in IMS platform and applications development and deployment
around the world. In addition, we want to identify upcoming research areas
around IMS and investigate potential solutions in these areas. We solicit
papers covering a variety of topics that include, but are not limited to:
- IMS applications: IMS vs. Internet services, new IMS enabled
multimedia applications, application servers, feature interactions, service
orchestration, 3rd party interfaces, service creation toolkit,
experiences with IMS combinational services
- IMS and multimedia telephony, IMS and network convergence
- IMS in mobile networks: PoC/PTT to IMS evolution, voice call
continuity between IMS and legacy mobile networks
- IMS and triple play, IMS/IPTV/iTV integration, IMS for broadcasting
- IMS and access network integration and QoS issues for 3G, WLAN,
WIMAX, WiBro, etc.
- IMS core issues: security, performance/scalability, benchmarking,
interoperability
- Global IMS standards updates: IETF, 3GPP, ETSI TISPAN, OMA, etc.
- IMS client standardization and implementation, IMS SIM card issues
- Introduction strategies around the world for network operators
Papers should be of tutorial nature and contain state-of-the-art research
and development materials. Authors must follow the IEEE Vehicular Technology
Magazine guidelines regarding the manuscript format. For further
information, please refer to IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine website at *

CALL FOR PAPERS
WiMeshNets 2006 (http://wimeshnets.org)
First International Workshop on "Wireless mesh: moving towards applications"
(Co-located with QShine 2006, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) August 10, 2006
Recent advances in wireless mesh networks (WMNs) provide promising
opportunities in communication paradigms. WMNs do not depend on wired
communication infrastructure and their mesh connectivity provides
inherent built-in redundancy. This makes them also good candidates for
providing an alternative communication mechanism in the face of
disasters when normal communication infrastructure is destroyed. WMNs
build upon multi-hop forwarding of data packets from access nodes
towards gateways to the fixed network and thus share many properties of
Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. So far almost all existing research effort
related to Mobile Ad Hoc networks has been based mostly on the
assumptions that the nodes are highly mobile and are mainly battery
operated. Thus, most of the protocols and mechanisms try to conserve
energy and cope with frequent topology changes. In WMNs these
assumptions can be relaxed which enables the design of new protocols and
services for WMNs.
Supporting any application over wireless mesh networks is however a
challenging task due to the multi-hop forwarding of packets which also
limits the scalability of WMNs. Nevertheless, WMNs have promising
commercial potential as they are supposed to provide cheap wireless
network coverage and access. Towards this aim the traditional approaches
to routing and to service provisioning should be reconsidered taking
into account the intrinsic characteristics of WMNs and those of new and
emerging applications. This could pave the way to the assessment of this
technology which is expected to conquer new markets in the next few
years by taking advantage of the growth of heterogeneous networks.
Authors are invited to submit original full papers not currently under
review by other conferences on any aspect of “Wireless mesh: moving
towards applications”. Contributions describing theoretical research,
protocol design, experiments and measurements, commercial deployments,
business models, or position/vision statements are all encouraged.

• Multicasting and Broadcasting issues in Wireless Mesh Networks
• Security and Intrusion Detection for Wireless Mesh Networks
• Handoff and mobility management in Wireless Mesh Networks
• System prototypes and experimental evaluation of Wireless Mesh Networks
• Scheduling and Queuing mechanisms to provide QoS in Wireless Mesh
Networks
• Gaming applications over Wireless Mesh Networks
• Service level agreement and mesh organization
• Modeling and Performance Evaluation
• Seamless internetworking with other type of networks (like sensor
networks)
• Cross Layer Design and Interactions in Wireless Mesh Networks
• Transport Layer Protocols over Wireless Mesh Networks
• Deployment and configuration management
• Voice and Video over Wireless Mesh Networks

ANNOUNCEMENT and CALL FOR PAPERS
VANET 2006
The Third ACM International Workshop on Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks
In conjunction with ACM MobiCom 2006
September 29, 2006
Los Angeles, California, USA
Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE
http://www.sigmobile.org/workshops/vanet2006/
Important Dates:
Paper Submission Deadline: May 26, 2006
Notification of Acceptance: July 10, 2006
Camera-Ready Deadline: July 31, 2006
The goal of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances
in the development of wireless vehicular ad hoc networking (VANET)
technologies. Based on short- to medium-range communication systems
(vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside), vehicular ad hoc
networks will enable vehicular safety applications including collision
and other safety warnings as well as non-safety applications like
real-time traffic congestion and routing information, high-speed
tolling, mobile infotainment, and many others.
The creation of high-performance, highly reliable, highly scalable,
and secure VANET technologies, though, presents an extraordinary
challenge to the wireless research community: a high degree of
communication reliability is needed under unfavorable channel
conditions. Clearly, the specificity of vehicular ad hoc networks in
terms of mobility behavior and applications scenarios and requirements
makes VANET research an exciting and demanding application- and
purpose-driven sub-discipline of wireless networking.
Following the successes of VANET 2004 held in Philadelphia and VANET
2005 held in Cologne, Germany, the Third ACM International Workshop on
Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks will be held in Los Angeles, September 29,
2006, in conjunction with MobiCom 2006.
Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research related
to the theory or practice of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET).
All submissions must describe original research, not published or
currently under review for another workshop, conference, or
journal. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Safety and non-safety applications
- Roadside-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle communication
- Communication protocol design
- Channel modeling
- Modulation and coding
- Power control and scalability issues
- Multi-channel organization and operation
- Security issues and countermeasures
- Privacy issues
- Network management
- Simulation frameworks & real-world testbeds
VANETs present a highly active field of research, development,
standardization and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many
national/international projects in government, industry, and academia
devoted to VANETs, for example consortia like VSC (US), C2CCC (Europe)
and InternetITS (Japan), standardization efforts like IEEE 802.11p
(WAVE) and field trials like the large-scale Vehicle Infrastructure
Integration Program (VII) in the US.
Submission Instructions
All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Papers must be
in PDF format, no longer than 10 pages (single- or double-column), in
font no smaller than 11 points, and must fit properly on US
Letter-sized paper (8.5 inch x 11 inch) with reasonable
margins. Submitted papers will be judged based on their quality
through a double-blind review process, where the identities of the
authors are withheld from the reviewers. Detailed instructions for
paper submission will be posted on the VANET 2006 web page at:
http://www.sigmobile.org/workshops/vanet2006/.
Please email questions related to paper submission or the technical
program to: vanet2006-pc-chairs(a)rz.uni-karlsruhe.de.
