The 3rd International Conference on
Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing (UIC-06)
- Building Smart Worlds on Real and Cyber Spaces -
http://grid.hust.edu.cn/uic06/
Organized by Huazhong Univ. of Sci. and Tech. (HUST)
Co-Sponsored by HUST, NSFC, 863, ChinaGrid, IFIP
In Cooperation with the IEEE Computer Society (Applying)
Wuhan and Three Gorges, China, September 3-6, 2006
******************************************************
Following ubiquitous computers, networks, information,
services, etc., is a road towards a smart world (SW)
created on both real and cyber spaces. A SW is mainly
characterized by ubiquitous intelligence (UI) or
computational intelligence pervasive in the physical world,
filled with ubiquitous intelligent or smart things,
that are capable of computing, communicating, and behaving
smartly with some intelligence. One of the profound implications
of such ubiquitous smart things is that various kinds and
levels of intelligence will exist ubiquitously in
everyday objects, environments, systems and even ourselves,
and possibly be extended from man-made to natural things.
"Ubicomp" or "percomp" can be regarded as the computing of
all these intelligent/smart things/u-things, that are
essential elements and components of the SW.
A smart thing can be endowed with different levels of
intelligence, and may be context-aware, active, interactive,
reactive, proactive, assistive, adaptive, automated, sentient,
perceptual, cognitive, autonomic and/or thinking.
Intelligent/smart things is an emerging research field
covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist
to move from the ubiquitous world with universal services of
any means/place/time to the SW of trustworthy services with the
right means/place/time. UIC-06 is a successor of the 2nd Int'l
Symposium on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Smart Worlds (UISW2005,
Japan, Dec. 2005) which succeeds the 1st Int'l Workshop on
Ubiquitous Smart Worlds (USW2005,Taipei, Mar. 2005). It offers
a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and experiences in
developing intelligent/smart objects, environments, and systems
as well as discuss various personal/social/physical issues
faced by UI and SWs.
Topics include but are not limited to the following:
1. Ubiquitous Intelligent/Smart Objects
* Electronic Label, Card, E-Tag and RFID
* Embedded Chips, Sensor & Actuator
* MEMS, NEMS, Mote & Biometric Device
* Everyday Good, Artifact, Robot, etc.

Dear Friends and Colleagues
Please note the following CFP: Deadline for Papers Sumission is April 1st.
Call for Papers: IEEE Communications Magazine
Feature Topic on "Advances in Control and Management of Connection-Oriented
Networks"
The objective of this feature topic is to report to the community recent
research and development activities in the general area of control and
management of connection-oriented networks enabled by techniques such as MPLS
label switched paths, MPLS pseudo-wire emulation, VLANs, and Generalized MPLS
(GMPLS). Dynamic control of connection oriented networks entails the
implementation of capabilities within the network for state information
management, resource allocation, decision making, and action invocation. These
capabilities are manifested through sophisticated control plane algorithms and
protocols for path computation, routing, and signaling.
Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)/Generalized MPLS (GMPLS) protocols have
attained a high level of maturity to the extent that many network equipment
vendors are now augmenting their products with MPLS and GMPLS software and
major carriers are now providing mission critical MPLS-based IP VPN services
as a cost-effective alternative to traditional point-to-point TDM private
lines. At the same time, recent advancements in the area of MPLS and GMPLS
control plane technologies have led to the proposition that it is possible to
develop a unified control plane construct that can be used for different types
of connection oriented networks, encompassing a broad range of switching
technologies.
Scope of contributions
Original contributions of a tutorial nature are solicited that cover the
topics including but not limited to:
Novel architectures for MPLS and GMPLS networks
Inter-domain routing and signaling
Routing and signaling for heterogeneous paths
Automatic discovery techniques
Call and connection management
Multi-layers protection and restoration
Transport Protocols protocols for high speed connections
Distributed versus centralized management solutions
Security of control plane messages
Pseudo-wire emulation
Resource allocation in and contention resolution in multi-layer networks
Integrated network control and management
Control interconnection models
Interfaces to dynamically controlled optical networks
Intelligent network control middleware
Multi-layer traffic engineering
Control plane design
Testbeds and field trials

Call for Papers
ACC 2006
2nd IEEE WoWMoM Workshop on
Autonomic Communications and Computing
Niagara-Falls, Buffalo-NY, June 2006
in conjunction with IEEE WoWMoM 2006
http://www.autonomic-communication.org/acc/index.html
Sponsored by IEEE WoWMoM
Ubiquitous and self-organized Internet, ad hoc networks, wireless sensor
networks are expected to be some of the basic building blocks of
pervasive computing environments.
However, the promise of pervasive computing environments
will not be realized unless these systems can effectively "disappear".
In order to do that they need to become autonomous by managing their own
evolution and configuration changes without explicit user or
administrator action.
The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum between the autonomic
computing and autonommic communication communities to exchange ideas,
discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers,
professionals, and application developers both from industry and
academia. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical
aspects of autonomic communications and computing are solicited. Papers
describing prototype implementations and deployment are particularly
welcome. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Architecture and models for autonomic communication and computing
systems
- Tools and techniques for designing, analyzing and building
autonomic systems and networks
- Adaptive security for self protection of systems and networks
- Economic, biological and social models used for autonomic
communications
- Novel management techniques for autonomic communication and
computing systems
- Sensing, monitoring and measurements for self-managing systems and
networks
- Languages, development and securely programmable environments for
autonomic communications systems
- Advanced technologies for enabling autonomic communication and
computing systems
- Autonomic communication and computing testbeds and measurements
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Papers should contain original material and not be previously published,
or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts must be

Special issue of JCSCW on Leisure Technologies
Editors: Louise Barkhuus and Barry Brown, University of Glasgow
Call for papers
(Deadline March 17th 2006)
While computers are a established part of leisure activity, research
into leisure technology has remained an undercurrent in CSCW research.
In this call we invite authors to submit papers to the CSCW journal that
study the enjoyable aspects of collaboration and technology.
Following work on domestic settings [Taylor et al., 2005], blogging
[Nardi et al., 2004], gaming [Ducheneaut and Moore, 2004] and music
listening [Ohara and Brown, 2005], there is a growing body of research
that engages with the details of leisure practice. This work increases
our understandings of the diversity of practices that make up leisure.
Leisure cannot be defined in simple contrast with work - leisure often
takes place as part of work, and many leisure activities can seem very
work like, not to mention for those who work in the leisure industries.
We call for research that takes these observations further, engaging
with leisure as a new domain for technology research. In particular, we
invite contributions that discuss the design of new leisure
technologies, systems that support a broader range of activity than
currently conceived- the sociable, emotional and playful aspects of our
lives. We also call for conceptual contributions that deepen our
understanding of how technologies can support or hinder existing leisure
practices, such as sport and social relationships. The deadline for
paper submissions is March 17th 2006, and submissions should be sent to
barkhuus(a)dcs.gla.ac.uk. Submissions will be reviewed and authors
notified before the end of June 2006.
Topics include but are not limited to:
* New innovative games, e.g. mobile or interactive
* Mobile communication for social purposes, e.g. picture exchanging
* Home entertainment technologies
* Social and sociable implications of leisure technologies
* Tourist technologies such as interactive tourist guides, museum
visiting systems
* Fitness/health technologies
