Call for Papers
IWSAWC 2006
6th International Workshop on
Smart Appliances and Wearable Computing
In conjunction with ICDCS 2006
July 4, 2006, Lisboa, Portugal
(Submission deadline January 15, 2006)
http://ubicomp.lancs.ac.uk/workshops/iwsawc2006
************************************************************************
Through recent technological development researchers are now able to embed
sensing, computation, communication and actuation in personal devices and
everyday artefacts giving them the possibility to create large scale systems
of interacting smart appliances, physical objects and wearable computers.
This penetration of computation in all aspects of everyday life and work
requires thorough exploration of new kinds of embedded and smart devices and
software infrastructures and architectures that support such large-scale
scenarios beyond the lab environment.
The diversity of systems, devices, services and applications and their
distributed nature raises important questions about collaboration between
system components. Appropriate solutions often have to take potential resource
limitations of connected devices and appliances into account.
Contextual awareness, digital representations of physical system components as
well as access methods and processing of distributed information are of
specific importance - especially as smart devices and objects along with their
services are seamlessly integrated in the real world to support users in their
daily living activities.
## Scope:
This workshop serves as a forum for the exchange of new findings in
collaborative technologies and smart appliances deployed in real world
environments. We intend to bring together practitioners from academia as well
as industry to present their most recent research in these rapidly moving
fields. Technical papers on smart appliances and collaborative technologies
are solicited for oral presentation at IWSAWC 2006. Papers reporting new
developments in computing with smart devices such as PDAs, wearable computers,
and cellular phones as well as new insights in instrumentation of everyday
artefacts and their infrastructures will be invited for presentation. Workshop
topics include but are not limited to:
- Enabling Technologies
- Collaboration Concepts
- Infrastructure Solutions
- Home and Office Appliances
- Novel Smart Objects
- Portable Devices and Smart Sensors
- Wireless-phone Computing
- Home Networks and Wearable Networks
- Networking Protocols
- Security and Privacy Aspects
- Wearable Computers and PDAs
- Software and Service Architectures
- Location and Context-Aware Computing
## Format:
Authors of accepted papers will be invited for oral presentation at the
workshop. There will also be a poster session provinding an opportunity for
researchers to present their planned, on-going or recently-finished work and
highlighting recent results in the field of Smart Appliances and Wearable
Computing. Presenters are encouraged to show additional demonstrations
facilitating the poster.

Call for Papers: Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing
Special Issue on Video Communications for 4G Wireless Systems
http://www.ece.northwestern.edu/~haohong/wcmc/index.html
Deadline for Submission: January 1, 2006
Scope
In recent years, there has been a rapidly increasing demand for the
development of advanced interactive multimedia applications, such as video
telephony, video games and TV broadcasting. However, these applications are
always stringently constrained by current wireless system architectures
because the request of high data rate for video transmission. To better serve
this need, 4G broadband mobile systems are in planning and are expected to
increase the mobile data transmission rates and bring higher spectral
efficiency, lower cost per transmitted bit, and increased flexibility of
mobile terminals and networks. The new technology strives to eliminate the
distinction between video over wireless and video over wireline networks. In
the meantime, great opportunities are provided for proposing novel wireless
video protocols and applications, and developing advanced video coding and
communications systems and algorithms for the next-generation video
applications that can take maxim
um advantage of the 4G wireless systems.
The papers in this issue will focus on state-of-the-art research on all
aspects of the video communications for 4G wireless systems, from video
coding, resource allocation to transportation systems. We solicit papers
covering a variety of topics including but not limited to the following topics:
Advanced video coding algorithms
Advanced video error resilient and concealment algorithms for wireless systems
Video quality assessment for wireless communications
Rate control for wireless video
Scalable and multiple description video coding and video transmission
Joint source-channel coding for wireless video
Optimal resource allocation for energy-efficient wireless video
Cross-layer wireless video communication system design and optimization
Wireless video traffic modeling
Wireless video streaming and synchronization
Video processing for wireless sensor networks
New multimedia wireless protocols and standards
New video applications over 4G wireless systems
Packetization schemes for wireless video transmission
Efficient transport protocols for wireless networks
QoS issues for video over wireless, especially for low-delay communication
The merging of various wireless systems: cellular, metropolitan, and local
area networks
Proxy-based systems for video transcoding and content distribution
Lightweight video encoding methods based on distributed and multi-user coding

Call for Papers
__________________________________________________
First European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
- Innovative Approaches for Learning and Knowledge Sharing -
Crete, Greece - October 1-4, 2006
URL: http://www.ectel06.org
Organized by the PRO-LC Cluster
(http://www.professional-learning-cluster.org/)
__________________________________________________
With the shift towards the knowledge society, changing working
conditions and the continuous evolution of information and
communication technologies, peoples' knowledge and skills need
continuous development. Technology enhanced learning is one of the
strategic objectives of the EU/IST Work Programme, with the goal of
"improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of learning, for
individuals and organizations, independent of time, place and pace."
Innovative infrastructuctures, methods and approaches are needed to
reach this goal, and will facilitate transfer and sharing of
knowledge between individuals and in organisations. For e-learning,
as in e-commerce and
e-business, systemic changes wrought by emerging technologies are
also changing the relationships between consumption and production -
in this case of knowledge - as what many call 'Web 2.0' becomes more
interactive and user-generated content becomes more widespread.
The First European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
provides a unique forum for all research related to technology-
enhanced learning, as well as its interactions with knowledge
management, business processes and work environments. It will provide
a competitive yet broad enough forum for technology enhanced learning
research in Europe and world-wide through specialized workshops and
the main conference. The conference will provide unique networking
possibilities for participating researchers throughout the week and
include project meetings and discussions for several EU/IST projects
funded within the 6th framework program under the action line of
"Technology-
Enhanced Learning and Access to Cultural Heritage".
We welcome submissions describing innovative research on all relevant
issues, focusing on aspects from computer science, business and/or
education, as well as experience reports and case studies describing
innovative applications of new learning environments and approaches.
EC-TEL 2006 invites submissions in the following categories:

*Call for Papers: IEEE Communications Magazine*
*Special Issue on “Advances in Visual Content Analysis and Adaptation
for Multimedia Communications”*
*Background*
Modern multimedia communication applications such as mobile television,
video telephony, streaming and gaming over wired and wireless networks
have had different economic success and societal impact to-date. Such
successes depend, to a large extend, on their abilities to surpass
technical challenges related to visual content adaptation and delivery,
which rely on solutions provided by visual content analysis. On the
other hand, current communications networks consist of channels with
various throughputs, quality of services (QoS) and protocols, and
heterogeneous terminals with wide range of capabilities, accessibilities
and user preferences. The rapidly increasing gap between the richness of
multimedia content and the variations of the channels and terminals
urges the development of techniques for universal multimedia content
access, which heavily relies on the visual analysis tools to understand
the data from all perspectives including network conditions, terminal
capabilities, coding and transmission efficiencies and user preferences.
Therefore, to effectively improve the usability, efficiency and
robustness of multimedia communications in general and visual content
access, adaptation and delivery in particular, visual analysis and
processing methods must be able to provide automatic or semi-automatic
solutions for:
* High accuracy content segmentation and representation
* Adapting or transcoding data for various channels and terminals
* Scalability across the visual content
* Content-aware robust coding and transmissions
*Scope of contributions*
The goal of this special issue is to collate and disseminate recent and
relevant contributions in the area of visual content analysis including
content representation, understanding, access, adaptation, protection
and transmission, with focus on their impact on visual communication
systems. Tutorial papers are solicited that cover the topics including
but not limited to:
* Channel-aware visual content adaptation
- Visual content repurposing
- Visual content transcoding
- Visual content protection
* Terminal-aware visual content adaptation
- Object segmentation and tracking
- Model-based and object-based representations
- Layered and scalable representations
* Visual content access and delivery
- Resource-efficient content-aware adaptation and transmission policies
- Robust content-based coding and transmissions
- Content-adaptive cross-layer system design and optimization
* Applications
- Video game repurposing for wireless transmission
- Video content indexing and retrieval for mobile appliances
- Visual analysis for mobile broadcasting
*Schedule:*
Full article submission: April 1, 2006
Acceptance/rejection/revision: July 1, 2006
