CALL FOR PAPERS
NOSSDAV 2005
http://www.nossdav.org/2005/
15th ACM International Workshop on Network and Operating
System Support for Digital Audio and Video
For fifteen years, NOSSDAV has fostered cutting-edge state-of-the-art
research in multimedia and newly emerging areas such as networked
games and peer-to-peer streaming. The workshop environment encourages
lively discussion among participants and invites strong feedback for
work in progress. For 2005, NOSSDAV will take place in Skamania,
Washington. Located along the beautiful Columbia River about 30 miles
east of Portland, Oregon, Skamania offers a variety of outdoor
activities including golf, river rafting, kayaking, hiking, and quaint
riverfront towns steeped in Lewis-and-Clark-era history.
NOSSDAV invites submissions on all areas of multimedia computing and
networking and strongly encourages work in progress in emerging
areas. Papers grounded in high-quality experimental research based on
prototype and real systems are highly valued. Additionally, papers
proposing new directions for research or calling into question
existing conventional wisdom are welcomed. Topics of interest include,
but are not limited to:
*** Peer-to-peer streaming
*** Networked games
*** Wireless and mobile multimedia systems
- 3D multimedia and tele-immersion
- Streaming 3D graphics and virtual worlds
- Sensor netowrks and architectures
- In-network stream processing
- Application-level multicast
- Multimedia security
- Digital rights management
- Real-time operating system support for multimedia
- Multimedia middleware and frameworks
New for this year are three topic-specific sessions on peer-to-peer
streaming, networked games, and mobile media. These sessions will
include an invited paper from leading researchers and discussion
panels. Papers in these three areas are strongly encouraged. A broad
view will be taken in deciding what topics are within scope. Please
feel free to contact the workshop co-chairs if you are unsure and wish
to check if a particular paper or topic is within the workshop scope.
As always, student participation is strongly encouraged. To encourage
a good mix of seasoned researchers as well as students, we will be
offering discounted registration for student members who attend with
their faculty advisor.
Submissions (as well as the camera ready final versions of accepted
papers) should be no longer than 6 pages. We expect these submissions
to be the kernel of what will eventually lead to full-length papers at
high-quality conferences or journals.
Important Dates
February 21, 2005:
Paper registration deadline (abstract and title only).
February 28, 2005:
Paper submission deadline (full papers).

Overview:
The International Workshop on Web Caching and Content
Distribution (WCW) serves as the premiere meeting for researchers and
practitioners to exchange results and visions on all aspects of
content distribution, and delivery. Innovations in content delivery
systems continue to have strong impact in the Internet, resulting in a
surge of interest in both content delivery applications and the
web/network infrastructure that supports novel content delivery
applications. Starting from basic caching, research in content
distribution has broadened its scope to cover practically all areas
related to the intersection of content and networking, including such
areas as peer-to-peer, data grid computing, utility and edge
computing, application networking, wireless content delivery,
pervasive networking and content computing. Building on the success of
the previous WCW meetings, WCW10 plans to form a strong technical
program that covers the newest and most interesting areas relating to
content delivery services as they move through the Internet.
Call for Papers:
The workshop solicits technical papers related to Internet content
delivery, caching and replication, and content services
networking. Particular areas of interest include, but are not limited
to:
-Content delivery architectures
-P2P file sharing, storage, and content delivery
-Caching and content distribution for mobile wireless systems
-Web caching and replication (protocols and architectures)
-Edge services and dynamic content caching
-Multimedia content distribution
-Overlay networks for content delivery
-Content placement and request routing
-Empirical studies of deployed content delivery systems
-Security in content distribution systems
-Wide-area upload and content gathering

With various network characteristics, a number of wireless systems have
been developed over past years, targeting at different applications. While
most of these wireless technologies are deployed independently for now,
the service providers surely intend to own and operate overlaid
heterogeneous wireless systems, which integrate multiple wireless
technologies with partially overlapped coverage areas and provide
ubiquitous network service to mobile users.
Recent advances in reconfigurable computing have greatly advanced the
design of soft radios, which enable the communication with many different
radios with only a reconfiguration in software parameters. The maturation
of soft radio technology is becoming one of the most important milestones
for seamless integration of the heterogeneous wireless network. Serving as
the "glue", the soft radio technology has its niche in in two folds: (1)
the network infrastructure can be built upon soft radio, where the base
stations are tunable to different frequency bands and serve as general
access points for various mobile hosts (MHs), e.g., cellular handsets,
laptops, and PDA's (Personal Digital Assistants); and (2) the MHs may
employ soft radio, and accordingly, get access to various wireless systems
(such as wireless LAN, cellular, IEEE 802.20, and IEEE 802.16), providing
ubiquitous service for mobile users. An important design issue is to
capitalize on the recent achievement in soft radio technology for
providing improved and more efficient connectivity and service in
heterogeneous wireless networks.
With this special issue we aim at bringing together state-of-the-art
contributions in this emerging area of soft radio-enabled heterogeneous
wireless networks. We are seeking for papers reporting novel research or
commercial/industrial experiences. These papers should be original,
unpublished, and not currently under review by other conference, workshop,
or journal. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the
following:
- System optimization
- Efficient spectrum allocation and management
- Dynamic network topology discovery and optimization
- Smart handoff and inter-system signaling
- Quality of service in the heterogeneous networks
- Routing and load balancing
- Mobility management
- System modeling and performance evaluation
- Cognitive radio and testbed design

Call For papers
Special Issue on: “Collaborative Multimedia Applications in Technology”
Important Dates
Deadline for paper submission: 15 May 2005
Acceptance notification: 30 June 2005
Final version due: 15 August 2005
Guest Editors: Dr. Shervin Shirmohammadi and Dr. Abdulmotaleb El Saddik,
University of Ottawa, Canada
Collaborative multimedia environments support interactive knowledge
development, integration, and collaborative operations amongst participants
with diverse disciplinary and/or cultural backgrounds. Most of the
tele-collaborative applications are characterised by the fact that
knowledge-related work in many organisations is carried out by teams that
are distributed across buildings or countries. When a multimedia application
is used in a group task, it becomes a shared artifact that will be used to
assist the group's communication and coordination. Examples are joint
editing, whiteboarding, and multi-user presentations used in a variety of
applications such as conferencing, collaborative design, tele-training and
tele-operation.
For this special issue, IJCAT seeks original articles about computer
software, computer systems, and computer applications that enable
multi-participant multimedia collaboration. This includes the latest
advancements and trends in tele-conferencing and data-conferencing,
computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), collaborative virtual
environments (CVE), tele-mentoring, tele-operation, tele-collaboration, and
tele-haptics.
The purpose of this special issue is to provide a forum for researchers and
practitioners to review the current trends and latest developments in the
field, and to identify upcoming research directions for multimedia
telecollaboration. The focus will be on the scientific and engineering
advances made and new directions taken in the field.
Subject Coverage
Topics include, but are not limited to:
Architecture, design and development of collaborative systems
Collaborative virtual environments, shared virtual reality, and haptic
collaboration
Computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) systems
Tele-conferencing and shared object manipulation
e-Learning and distance education
Tele-operation frameworks and user interactions
Issues in the design of cross-cultural collaborative systems
Security and privacy in collaborative environments
